The NCAA Just Issued North Carolina It’s Harshest Threat Yet On The 1 Year Anniversary of HB2

hb2 north carolinaThe NCAA has just released their boldest statement yet about HB2 on the 1 year anniversary of the North Carolina House of Representatives passing the bill (March 23rd).

The NCAA basically told the state to repeal HB2 or lose all championship events through 2022.

The NCAA’s official press release stated:

“Last year, the NCAA Board of Governors relocated NCAA championships scheduled in North Carolina because of the cumulative impact HB2 had on local communities’ ability to assure a safe, healthy, discrimination free atmosphere for all those watching and participating in our events. Absent any change in the law, our position remains the same regarding hosting current or future events in the state. As the state knows, next week our various sports committees will begin making championships site selections for 2018-2022 based upon bids received from across the country. Once the sites are selected by the committee, those decisions are final and an announcement of all sites will be made on April 18.”

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, also released a statement today, calling for a repeal:

“I have offered numerous compromises and remain open to any deal that will bring jobs and sports back to North Carolina and begin to repair our reputation. Legislative Republicans have been all too happy to use their super-majorities to pass damaging partisan laws. It’s time for them to step up, meet halfway, and repeal HB 2.”

The North Carolina Values Cooalition responded by putting out a petition and a statement:
“We are tired of organizations like the NCAA trying to shape our state into their vision of political correctness, especially if it risks the innocence of one woman or child. The NCAA is supposed to be a non-profit. It’s inexcusable that the NCAA goes beyond their lobbying interests by continuing to benefit off the taxpayers that they are economically extorting.”

HB2, commonly referred to as North Carolina’s “bathroom bill”, specifically clarifies that all public bathrooms, locker rooms, and showers in the state are limited to only 1 sex at a time, and authorizes the Human Rights Commission to oversee the new protections. The new law also allows for transgender people who have transitioned to the opposite sex to freely use the bathroom of their new sex.

The bill also clarifies that the State is responsible for regulating employment relationships in order to simplify local laws and ordinances which are deemed harmful to commerce, labor, and trade in the state of North Carolina. It specifies that local governments can’t force local businesses to pay workers above the current state minimum wage, with some exceptions.

Charlotte Real Estate Market Will Keep Sizzling in 2017

Queen City is expected to sizzle right through 2017. The residential real estate forecasters at Realtor.com predict a 4.3 percent sale price increase this year throughout the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia real estate market compared with 3.9 percent for the entire nation. Things will be just as warm in the 2017 Charlotte commercial real estate market.

Coupled with a 6.3 percent increase in home sales, Charlotte is now in 21st position for market strength in the country’s largest 100 real estate markets.

With PwC and the Urban Land Institute calling Charlotte America’s third most attractive real estate market and US News ranking our town one of the 20 best places to live in the United States, the crackle in the local market isn’t expected to cool anytime soon.

2017 Charlotte Real Estate Predictions

With the strength of the local real estate market as a foundation, what specifics can we expect this year?

Homes will continue to sell quickly

Listed homes stayed on the market for an average of 32 days in the first quarter of 2016, and that number is currently about 40 for 2017. The most attractive homes by location, price or features will sell significantly faster than that. Some experts predict that the summer of 2017 will see record-quick home sales here and across the country.

Sale price increases might be greater than forecasted

Experts are reporting the median sale price of homes in Charlotte is running 20 percent higher than this time 12 months ago currently at $369,000. That increase might signal an average sale price that rises more than the expected 4.3 percent, especially because the inventory of homes for sale is still quite low.

The Charlotte rental market will be strong too

Strong home sales, limited availability and rising prices put off some buyers out of the market. The rental market gets stronger. Rent might very well exceed the 2016 rent rates of more than $1,100 for a single-bedroom apartment and nearly $1,300 for a two-bedroom. One factor that might offset rental price increase over the next 12-24 months is the fact that 23,500 new apartment units are either under construction or are planned here, per the Charlotte Observer. However, job growth and an expanding local population should quickly absorb new apartments as they become available.

The commercial Charlotte real estate market will be just as hot

CBRE, the world’s largest commercial real estate service company, predicts that Charlotte will remain a high-demand market. According to the Observer story, the CBRE report indicates, “Vibrant economic expansion, solid leasing dynamics and strong investment returns have made Charlotte one of the most sought after markets in the Southeast. Fueling its growth is a combination of affordability, high quality of living and an educated workforce.” That should translate to:

  • Consistent tenant demand for office space, with most office projects scheduled for completion in 2017 already fully leased
  • Retail leasing will remain strong despite the impact of Internet competition with new retailers arriving in Charlotte in response to the growing population and high wages
  • Warehouse and distribution space will be at a premium, in part due to strong Internet sales and the fact that 50 percent of the US population can be reached by truck from Charlotte in one day

2017 Charlotte Real Estate and You

If you’re planning to buy a Charlotte home this year, it goes without saying that you must be pre-qualified if necessary, and ready to act. Just as importantly, you should be working with an agent you can trust to inform you immediately by text or phone when homes that fit your criteria hit the market. “Snooze you lose” is the mantra for 2017.

Renters should proceed in much the same way as buyers. Work with a rental agency that knows the market and can inform you when existing apartments or homes become available and apartments under construction begin to lease.

If you plan to lease commercial space in Charlotte in 2017, understand that the prices, especially for prime locations, are going to be high. You’ll have to consider your leasing costs when factoring every other part of your business plan including product or service pricing, hiring and the capital you’ll have for product development and expansion.

Stay informed, plan carefully and have your financial ducks in a row as you plan to jump into the 2017 Charlotte real estate residential or commercial market. That’s the only strategy for getting the home or space you want.

Fox’s Controversial New Show ‘Shots Fired’ Just Debuted After Being Filmed in Charlotte

Fox’s highly anticipated new series Shots Fired just premiered last night alongside Empire’s midseason return. The 10-episode series, which comes with a possibility for more future seasons, seems to be a response to the surging popularity of ABC’s anthology series American Crime.

The new show tackles controversial issues of institutionalized racism, police brutality, and racial tension in America.

Shots Fired tells the story of a black police officer named Joshua Beck who “racially profiles” a white college student driving around a black neighborhood. The officer assumes the white student is just in the neighborhood to buy drugs and pulls him over. An altercation then erupts, and the officer shoots and kills the student. The small southern town then erupts and special investigators are sent to launch an investigation into the entire police department, because “no one wants another Ferguson.”

Shots Fired will continue to air Wednesday nights at 8pm on Fox.

According to the North Carolina Film Office, “Shots Fired” and two other upcoming productions are expected to have direct in-state spending of more than $64.5 million while creating approximately 7,600 jobs throughout the state.

CMS Pulls Book About A Boy In A Dress From Elementary Curriculum After Uproar From Parents

jacobs-new-dress-cmsAfter an uproar from parents, teachers, and Republican politicians, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system just decided to remove “Jacob’s New Dress,” a book about a boy who dresses like a girl, from required lesson plans in four Charlotte elementary schools.

The book was originally selected as part of CMS’s ‘anti-bullying program‘, a new program aimed at increasing acceptance through teaching elementary students about gender expression and gender fluidity.

Yesterday afternoon, Charles Jeter, CMS’s government liaison, sent a letter out to Republican legislators saying that CMS has now agreed to substitute “Jacob’s New Dress” with “Red: A Crayon’s Story” – a story about a crayon that looks red but sees himself as blue.

Parents and teachers began voicing their opposition as soon as they learned about the new “Jacob’s New Dress” lesson plans last week, many stating that sexuality and gender identity should not be taught by schools.

State Republican leaders and watchdog groups also voiced their opposition upon learning about the new book.

“The purpose of our elementary schools is to teach writing, reading and arithmetic, not to encourage boys to wear dresses. These lessons found in the ‘Jacob’s New Dress’ and ‘My Princess Boy’ and other transgender curriculum are not appropriate for any child whose parents support traditional family values,” commented Tami Fitzgerald of the North Carolina Values Coalition in yesterday’s press release.

This past August, CMS came under fire after it started using the “Gender Unicorn” in its training material about gender identity. The Values Coalition stood up to the school board at their meeting meeting and flooded board members with emails, phone calls, and letters, telling them that the new program forced kids to support gender flexibility.

The CMS school board also recently added sexual orientation and “gender identity/expression” to its policy on multiculturalism. The new policy now requires CMS to “intentionally incorporate diversity throughout the curriculum, instruction and professional development.”

Superintendent Ann Clark has still not responded for comment on the ‘Jacob’s New Dress’ lesson plans, or about them adding sexual identity to the school system’s multicultural policies.

Mr. White Jr. created an idea to greet his students with different styles of handshakes inspired by each one’s personality and caught the eye of many across the nation (he even performed his handshakes on the Today Show and Good Morning America).

Over 20 Charlotte Students Have Been Suspended For Liking An Instagram Post

Over 20 Charlotte-area students were suspended from school for 3 days after they ‘liked’ an Instagram post that references a school shooting.

According to Bradford Preparatory School, everyone who hit the “like” button is being punished.

Yesterday the school released the following statement:

students-suspended-for-instagram-postThe Instagram post seems pretty harmless at first, until you understand what the caption is saying in relation to the picture.

The description under the photo reads, “Bradford gon have a school shooter one day” followed by two laughing emojis, under the picture of two of the school’s students.

Once administrators at the school discovered the post, they were quick to deal with the two who were in the picture, and then started cracking down on all students at the school who ‘liked’ the post.

The school’s reasoning was that they felt that any student who liked the post was ‘endorsing a threat against the school.’

trumpcareThe highly-anticipated ‘repeal and replacement’ of Obamacare is finally here, and many of the key differences between the new plan and Obama’s Affordable Care Act will directly affect our wallets as soon as it goes into affect.

According to estimates by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the new ‘American Health Care Act‘, which many people are nicknaming “Trumpcare” and “Ryancare”, would raise the average health-insurance premium for an individual policyholder (averaging all income levels) by 15 to 20 percent over the next two years.

In order to assess the new healthcare plan’s impact on people who buy their own insurance, WalletHub’s analysts compared the differences in premium subsidies that the average households in 457 U.S. cities would receive under Obamacare and Trumpcare.

According to their findings, Charlotte would be the #2 most affected large city in America if the new plan were to be approved.

The above charts used the data from 457 U.S. cities of varying sizes to look at the differences in premium tax subsidies that a joint-filing household would receive under the AHCA, or ‘Trumpcare’, and the Affordable Care Act (ACA), or ‘Obamacare’, which is currently in effect, in each city.

North Carolina Drivers Could Soon Be Fined $200 For Driving Too Slow In The Left Lane

i77 toll lanesA new North Carolina bill has just been filed that would fine people for driving too slow in the passing lane.

Senate Bill 303 would issue a $200 fine to drivers who are caught driving below the speed limit or “impeding the flow of traffic” in the left lane of any highway in the state – unless the driver is actively passing another car or preparing for a left turn.

It specifically defines “impeding the flow of traffic” as when “the person knows or reasonably should know that he or she is being overtaken from the rear by a vehicle traveling at a higher rate of speed.”

The new potential law is being co-sponsored by Republican Sens. Tom McInnis of Rockingham and Jim Davis of Macon County.

North Carolina does already requires slower vehicles to keep right, but our state doesn’t yet spell out specific penalties. If the bill passes, the state would join at least five other states that fine people for driving too slow in passing lanes, according to PBS Newshour.

If it is passed, the new law would go into effect on December 1, 2017.

Her boost in stardom came quickly after she was cast to play Reese Witherspoon’s daughter in the new HBO miniseries “Big Little Lies.”

The show is being produced by Witherspoon and Kidman, and directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (Academy Award winning director).

Celebrity-stalkers have now taken countless shots of Darby, hand-in-hand with Witherspoon, many of which ended up Hollywood gossip sites and national news sites.

Darby has also worked with Justin Theroux in one episode of HBO’s “The Leftovers”; in an independent film called “Blue,”; and on Lifetime’s “Drop Dead Diva.”

She’s also appeared in several TV commercials, including one with Panthers QB Cam Newton.
