CMPD Wants To Build A New $26 Million Police Station in Uptown Charlotte

A new three-story police station would rise near Johnson & Wales University if the Charlotte City Council approves a request from the police department.

According to yesterday’s press release, “City Council received an update Monday night on the lease agreement for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Central Division office space. Bank of America owns the facility. CMPD and Engineering and Property Management considered more than ten properties for the potential new location of the city-owned Central Division station.”

At the meeting, CMPD chief Kerr Putney announced the decision to pursue the construction of a new $26 million central police station on 1.27 acre site at 700 West 5th Street across from the Elmwood Cemetery:

Police chief Putney noted that the new facility would be bigger, more advanced, and more easily accessible than their current facility. “Ultimately, this is our opportunity to have a good location in center city,” he commented.

The city has currently budgeted $13.5 million for the new department, and would need to approve an additional $12.5 million to move forward with the proposed project.

Federal Judge Ordered Wells Fargo To Pay $142 Million To Customers in Fake Account Settlement

wells-fargo-uptown-charlotteThis past weekend, a federal judge signed off on a $142 million settlement deal in a class-action lawsuit against Wells Fargo & Co. from the creation of over 2.1 million unauthorized accounts.

The settlement requires the bank to pay compensation if a customer’s credit score dropped due to the creation of a fake account between May 1, 2002 and April 20 of this year.

The company said that the payments will depend on “how much the credit score declined, the type and size of the subsequent authorized credit product, and other factors.” Customers will be notified in the next three months with details on how to start a claim.

Here’s a potential example from the settlement documents of a customer who borrowed $18,000 after a credit score reduction of 12 points;

Wells Fargo admitted last September that it had opened millions of unauthorized checking and credit card accounts between 2011 and 2015, blaming unrealistic sales goals and pressure put on its sales people. The outrage forced the resignation of longtime CEO John Stumpf, the restructuring of Wells Fargo’s sales targets, and massive federal and local investigations.

mlb-coming-to-charlotteLast night, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred talked openly about what city the MLB’s newest expansion team might be hosted in, naming Montreal, Charlotte, and Mexico City as likely candidates.

These were his comments about the new location:

“Let me go back to a conversation we’ve had already. I think for us to expand we need to be resolved in Tampa and Oakland in terms of their stadium situations. As much as I hope that both Oakland and Tampa will get stadiums, I think it would be difficult to convince the owners to go forward with an expansion until those situations are resolved.

Once they’re done, I think we have some great candidates. I know the mayor of Montreal has been very vocal about bringing baseball back to Montreal. It was not great when the Expos left. The fact of the matter was baseball was successful in Montreal for a very long time. Charlotte is a possibility. And I would like to think that Mexico City or some place in Mexico would be another possibility.”

Last year, Charlotte was also named as a possible MLB expansion city, but in a longer list. In an interview with the Associated Press last year, Manfred listed; Charlotte, Oklahoma City, Mexico City, Portland, Las Vegas, Montreal and San Antonio as possible MLB expansion cities.

The MLB has expanded since 1998 when the Tampa Bay Rays (originally the Devil Rays) and Arizona Diamondbacks first started. Given the growth of major league baseball’s popularity, and after almost 20 years of no activity, the jump from 30 teams to, say, 32 now seems overdue.

If (and when) Charlotte is chosen to host it’s own major league baseball team, one of the biggest questions on everyone’s mind is where will the stadium be. The BB&T field in Uptown Charlotte was not designed to be retrofitted for major league standards, and city planners don’t think Uptown could handle the additional traffic and parking during the 81+ major league home games (many of which are on weekdays).

68-Year-Old Paul Neal Rode His Bike From Rock Hill To California To Re-Live A Childhood Memory

Rock Hill’s very own Paul Neal just completed his cross-country bike ride at the age of 68.

This was his second 3,000 mile cycle trip in 50 years, reliving the greatest memory of his childhood. He took his first cross-country ride in 1967 when he was just 18 years old.

When he left from Rock Hill’s Holiday In on the morning of June 5th, His friends think he’s crazy, saying he picked the worst time of the year – the middle of the summer and into the westward prevailing winds.

In spite of the warnings and his age, he was determined.

Along the way he had several break-downs;

and stopped to take in many of the South East’s legendary monuments;

When he hit the California border, He relived the picture he took half a century ago;

Paul finally arrived on the West Coast at about 5:30pm last night, beating his record from 50 years ago by 2 days;

Carolina Panthers Have Decided To Charge For Fan Fest Tickets For The First Time In 24 Years

panthers fan fest 2015For the first time in 24 years, the Carolina Panthers will be charging fans for their annual pre-season Fan Fest.

According to NBC Sports, they will be charging $5 per ticket to what used to be the organization’s largest free event of the year. All proceeds from the ticket sales will be donated to the Panther’s charitable division.

“Due to increased demand and precautions for fan safety, all patrons must have a ticket to attend the event,” Panthers director of communications Steven Drummond said. “Admission will be $5 for a reserved ticket. Proceeds from Fan Fest will benefit Carolina Panthers Charities and will support grant funding awards to non-profit organizations that serve communities in the two-state region.”

Last year the team announced free tickets to the event, but within 1 day, all 60,000 tickets were already claimed. They are now hoping that charging $5 per ticket will allow a more balanced distribution of tickets.

Their team practice at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC will still be free to the public (July 26-August 13).

North Carolina’s ‘Brunch Bill’ Signed By Governor Cooper – Now Moves To Local Governments

drink-in-handNow that Governor Cooper has officially signed the so-called “Brunch Bill”, it will have to be signed by local governments all across the state before it can actually take effect.

Senate Bill 155 will essentially allows alcohol sales two hours earlier on Sunday mornings (10am instead of the current 12pm) for local restaurants, grocery stores, and breweries.

The Charlotte City Council is now scheduled to meet on July 24 to vote on the new bill – according to recent statements from Mayor Roberts, she will voting to pass the bill and expects the other council members to follow suit.

Huntersville and Mecklenburg County commissioners will be voting on the new bill this coming Tuesday.

Several of the local breweries around South End, including the Unknown and the Wooden Robot, are praising the new law. It will allow them to open for business before Panther games, instead of just opening their parking lots to tailgaters.

Harris Teeter, Publix, and Food Lion have also released statements saying that customers have long demanded alcohol sales before noon on Sundays and that they will be adjusting their hours to take advantage of the new law.

Teenager Set Fire To NC Walmart – Caused Over $3 Million In Damage

According to a recent press release by the North Carolina SBI, last week’s fire in Elkin’s Walmart was intentionally set by a 15-year-old boy, and resulted in over $3 million in damages for the store.

With the help of store surveillance cameras, investigators were able to identify a suspect. Authorities have now issued juvenile arrest warrants for burning personal property and burning a public building.

Last week the CC Fire Department posted several pictures of the fire and combined effort to put it out on their Facebook page:

The Surry County Fire Marshal’s office said the case is still under investigation by Elkin Police, Elkin Fire Dept. and SBI.

Elkin Walmart will now be closed for some time due to smoke damage throughout the store. Local Walmart customers say they are not sure where they will shop while the store is closed, since the next closest Walmart is several miles away.
