The Panthers just scored 37 points in their season opener — and somehow lost by 22. Carolina’s offensive explosion became the bright spot of a wild 59-37 loss to Chicago Sunday at Bank of America Stadium – the highest scoring season opener in NFL history.
The teams combined for an incredible 96 points and 1,030 yards. Carolina produced 478 yards while averaging 7.7 yards per play.
Bryce Young delivered one of the day’s biggest positives. He threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns, while completing 23 of 37 passes.
Jalen Coker also broke out with eight catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Carolina battled back from a 21-7 deficit and eventually tied Chicago at 31-31.
However, the Panthers couldn’t stop Chicago’s offense.
Caleb Williams threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns. He added 65 rushing yards and two more scores. D’Andre Swift rushed for 124 yards and three touchdowns.
Chicago finished with 552 yards and scored 28 points after Carolina tied the game. The Panthers also committed three turnovers compared with Chicago’s one.
The loss leaves Carolina with a clear contrast entering Week 2. The offense showed considerably more explosiveness, but the defense surrendered 59 points at home.
