Carolinas HealthCare System is now using their new online appointments system for their 28 urgent care locations across the Charlotte region.

The new system will allow patients to make online reservations and skip the waiting room all-together;

You can schedule your appointment at anytime from your smartphones, tablets, or computer. Patients can check in and schedule appointments, allowing them to wait in convenient places – at home or in a coffee shop – instead of spending time in a waiting room with potentially contagious people. The app will then notify patients as their appointment approaches.

Mills River Becomes NC’s First Major Factory To Be Powered by 100% Renewable Energy

UPM Raflatac, a manufacturer of pressure sensitive label materials, just announced that its factory in Mills River is now the first major manufacturing facility in North Carolina whose electrical supply is generated entirely by renewable sources.

This year, the Mills River factory opted to increase its renewable electricity use from 4 percent to 100 percent. Renewable electricity is generated from sources like wind, solar and hydropower. UPM Raflatac has a 2030 target to reduce fossil CO2 emissions from its operations and purchased electricity by 30 percent. The switch to 100 percent renewable electricity for the Mills River facility is a major step toward meeting that target.

The use of renewable electricity is a key component of UPM Raflatac’s Biofore Site™ program, which aims to improve the sustainability performance of the company’s manufacturing sites. The program includes a Biofore Site scorecard with approximately 30 sustainability measures, including energy use, aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are the framework that governments, business and civil society use to drive the sustainability agenda. The Biofore Site scorecard is also a tool to make the company’s sustainability performance more tangible and transparent for its employees and others.

“We are proud to be North Carolina’s first manufacturing facility to boast 100 percent renewable electricity use,” says Ari Salminen, the General Manager of UPM Raflatac’s Mills River factory. “It is just one way we are labeling a smarter future beyond fossils and leading the way for positive change in our state.”

NC DOT Announces Plans To Start Building Toll Lanes on I-485 This Summer

The NC Department of Transportation and NC Turnpike Authority just announced plans to start construction on Charlotte’s third major toll lane project on I-485 this summer.

The plan calls for adding 17 miles of toll lanes in both directions of I-485 between I-77 and U.S. 74. The state would also add another general purpose lane in each direction between Rea and Providence roads.

The plan would differ from the toll lanes now being built on I-77 in that they would be built by the state, instead of by a private company (Cintra), so they would not need to make a profit – theoretically, this should make the toll lanes less expensive to travel on.

According to the NCDOT:

“The proposed project will add one express lane in each direction on I-485 between I-77 and U.S. 74 (Independence Boulevard). The proposed improvements will provide travel time reliability and improve traffic flows on this critical transportation corridor. This project will serve as part of a larger network of express lanes to offer drivers a new traffic choice – pay a fee and ride in the express lanes to avoid traffic delays or continue driving in the general purpose lanes for free.”

The total cost of the project is expected to be $289.5 million, they hope to open the toll lanes in late 2020.

This will become the 3rd major toll-road project around the Charlotte region, including the I-77 toll lanes and The Monroe Expressway.

Lowes Building 23-Story ‘Tech Center’ in South End w/ Average Salaries of $117,000

Lowes has just announced plans for a massive new development in Charlotte’s South End.

Their new 23-story 357,000 square feet ‘tech center’ will house up to 2,000 additional technology professionals, according to a statement from the company.

Salaries will vary for the new employees, but the average will be just over $117,000.

Lowe’s expects to fill the first 400 new tech positions in the next year and plans to begin hiring for these roles immediately. Candidates can visit Jobs.lowes.com/technology. Open positions include software and infrastructure engineers, data scientists, analysts, architects, user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) professionals, and artificial intelligence and machine learning engineers.

The new employees will temporarily be housed at The Charlotte Plaza at 201 S. College Street until the new South End facility opens.

“We’re excited to stand up our new global technology center here in North Carolina to continue to drive our company’s growth,” said Marvin R. Ellison, Lowe’s president and CEO, who joined the company in July 2018. “Locating our new facility in the heart of Charlotte, the state’s largest metropolitan area, will enable Lowe’s to attract top technology talent and foster collaboration with our teams in our nearby Mooresville headquarters. This team will create technology solutions that will accelerate our commitment to becoming a best-in-class, omni-channel retailer and strengthen our associate and customer experiences.”

The new ‘Design Center Tower’, will be located at 100 W. Worthington Ave. in the heart of South End.

They plan to break ground in August 2019 and start moving in by late 2021.

Franklin Graham has just announced a new 8-stop tour of North Carolina, during which he will attempt to fill some of the biggest venues in our state over the course of 2 weeks.

The “Decision America Tar Heel State Tour” will feature music by Jeremy Camp and Dennis Agajanian, and preaching by Franklin Graham.

According to his website, “From October 1–13, Franklin Graham will embark on an eight-city tour of his home state, North Carolina. One-night prayer and evangelism events are scheduled to take place in Fayetteville, Greenville, Wilmington, Raleigh, Greensboro, Hickory, Charlotte and Asheville.”

Graham recently finished a much wider 6-state ‘Decision America Tour’ on May 30th in Syracuse.

The evangelist insists the tours are not political, but his speeches are often riddled with overtly political statements.

During his speech in Syracuse, Graham spent several minutes calling on Trump’s critics to “move on” from the inquiries into President Trump’s behavior (including the Mueller report).

“I don’t know of any president who has been attacked as much,” Graham said, adding that he thinks that “Congress needs to be focused on solving problems.”

That statement brought a cheer from the audience.

Later in his speech, Graham spoke at length about his recent verbal feud with Pete Buttigieg, the openly gay Democratic Presidential Nominee.

He repeated what he has said several times over the past few weeks — that homosexuality is a sin and Buttigieg needs to “repent his sin, not flaunt it.”

The price tracking website and app company ‘GasBuddy’ recently released the results from their 3 year study of fuel price data showing which days of the week you should buy gas, and which days you should avoid.

According to the company, Mondays have consistently proven to be the cheapest, and Thursdays are usually the most expensive.

“The rise in average prices towards the weekend could be to blame on an influential report from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) issued weekly on Wednesdays, which could push prices higher the day after, depending on if data in its report is as expected or a surprise,” said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst at GasBuddy. “Since commodities trading isn’t active over the weekend, it typically allows stations to ‘let it ride’ over the weekend, culminating in lower prices by the start of the work week.”

The company does note that the best day changes year-to-year and state-to-state, but if you were to switch from shopping on Thursdays to Mondays, you could end up saving an average of $325 every year.

NC’s Outer Banks Ranked As One Of America’s Most Desired New Nudist Beaches

North Carolina’s Outer Banks have just been ranked as one of the most ideal places in North America to go skinny dipping, according to the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR).

The organization conducted a national survey of its members asking where they thought nude beaches should be officially designated.

The Outer Banks was ranked #2 on the survey, just behind Florida’s Panama City Beach, and just ahead of Oahu’s North Shore beach.

Their press release also points out that “across the U.S. public officials are slowly realizing the benefits to tourism from nude beaches and are now starting to create official nude beaches such as Gunnison Beach in New Jersey (National Park Service), Haulover Beach in Florida (Miami-Dade County), and Rooster Rock in Oregon.”

Today the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in Rucho v. League of Women Voters of North Carolina that no fair test exists for courts to determine when partisan gerrymandering has gone too far.

“Today’s decision is devastating to the voters in North Carolina who have lived with unconstitutional districts in the last four federal elections,” said Janet Hoy, co-president of the League of Women Voters of North Carolina and a named plaintiff in the case. “While we were hopeful that the Court would set a standard to address extreme gerrymandering cases like ours, we will continue to work on getting fair maps for North Carolinians through other means.”

In arguments, the League proposed a three-prong vote dilution test for determining when a partisan gerrymander has gone too far: clearly identifiable partisan intent on a per-district basis; with an effect that is district specific; and no legitimate purpose by a legislature.

The high court has yet to vote that an election map drawn for blatant partisan advantage is unconstitutional. Justices have continually reasoned that elected officials are expected to joust for power in that fashion, while courts should be reluctant to intercede.

Rucho v. League of Women Voters of North Carolina was consolidated with Rucho v. Common Cause, a companion challenge to the North Carolina legislature, as well as Benisek v. Lamone, a redistricting case out of Maryland.

Although the supreme court had not yet ruled against these types of gerrymandering cases, the plaintiffs were hoping this time things would be different. In relatively “purple” North Carolina, where President Barack Obama won in 2008 but lost in 2012, Republicans drew themselves a 10-3 advantage in Congress. In more liberal Maryland, Democrats gave their party a disproportionate, 7-1 majority.
