Charlotte’s Cardinal Innovations Announces $500,000 Grant to Fight Local Opioid Crisis

0

Responding to public officials’ calls for help, Cardinal Innovations just announced a $500,000 grant to distribute some 7,000 units of Narcan to 20 counties around the Charlotte region. Most dosages will be distributed to local health departments; the remainder will go to providers that serve those who suffer from opioid addiction.

Cardinal Innovations Healthcare is a specialized insurance health plan contracted by the state to serve Medicaid recipients and the under-insured and uninsured, including coordinating care for those experiencing substance use disorders.

Dr. Pamela Wright-Etter, Cardinal Innovations’ Deputy Chief Medical Officer, told Spectrum News, “Narcan is really important to have out in the community. The more people we can get Narcan out to, the better because when an overdose happens you have to be ready to immediately administer it.”

Naloxone works by immediately restoring a person’s breathing. It can either be injected intravenously or deliver through the nose, via a special spray canister. It lasts about 30-60 minutes, so anyone administering the drug should immediately call 9-1-1, if they haven’t done so already, and stay with the patient until help arrives.

The following are common signs of an opioid-related overdose;

Small pupils
Pale face
Limp body
Shallow or slowed breathing
Vomiting
Loss of consciousness

North Carolina also has the ‘Good Samaritan law’, which essentially protects people who contact emergency officials, then administer Naloxone to someone who has overdosed from any liability.

If you know anyone who might use heroin or any other opioids, please pick up some Naloxone from your local pharmacist and keep it handy – you never know when it might save someone’s life.

Please help spread the word!

Charlotte Driver Hits Flying Fish While Crossing Bridge (Video)

0

North Carolina may have its fair sharing of lake monster, bigfoot, UFO, and flying dinosaur sightings, but it’s yet to witness the elusive flying fish.

That all changed this week with a video posted on social media by Ward Transport and Logistics.

According to the company, one of their Charlotte drivers was crossing Randleman Lake on I-73 (just south of High Point), when a flying fish smashed directly into the driver’s windshield.

The company uploaded the video to Twitter and said, “One of our #charlotte drivers verifies that when driving a truck, you must be prepared for ANYTHING! #drivers #trucking“

The driver quickly pulled over, cleaned his windshield, and was able to safely return to the road.

The Arts Council of York County is implementing a new public art project centered around local water heritage and water quality.
Selected artists are turning their concepts into reality in the form of small-scale, semi-permanent, outdoor murals that adorn storm drains in Old Town Rock Hill, raising awareness and educating the public about the effects of stormwater runoff on water quality.

Why Storm Drains?
Storm drains lead directly to our waterways. Each time it rains, trash and pollutants on our streets are washed into the storm drains and are carried into our rivers, streams, and lakes. Stormwater pollution can significantly degrade our fish and wildlife habitat, our drinking water, and recreational opportunities. By painting Rock Hill’s storm drains, we are reminding residents that our neighborhoods are all connected to our rivers, streams, and lakes.

TV and Film With A North Carolina Vibe

0

Hollywood is known for setting its films and TV shows in big cities like New York, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other notable areas. But there are some great, entertaining products based in the good ol’ state of North Carolina, too. And nothing hits the spot after a horrible day at the office like a good movie or tv show.

If you’re a film buff and like to research and binge stuff like that, or if you’re just looking for a taste of your home state on the screen, there are plenty of options in every genre. You’ll be busy for months if you’re trying to consume it all, but you’ll also be entertained. So get the popcorn and grab the remote!

Romance

Nicholas Sparks sets many of his stories in his home state of North Carolina, so the movies based on his books are a great place to start if you’re looking for several hours of heartwarming, love-filled diversions.

Start with Message In A Bottle starring Kevin Costner and Robin Wright Penn. Then move on to the Best of Me starring James Marsden and Bridget Monaghan. And finish with the Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams hit, The Notebook.

If you’re still looking for more sparks (see what I did there?), then check out the breakout role of Mandy Moore, A Walk To Remember. And, if you’ve already deep-dived on all of the Sparks stories, and you need something binge-worthy, give One Tree Hill a shot. It’s got 9 seasons of love triangles, soapy drama, and spicy entanglements.

Sports

North Carolina is home to millions of racing fans, so it’s not shocking that there would be a great racing-based film. One of Tom Cruise’s earliest films, Days of Thunder, stars him and his ex-wife Nicole Kidman. He plays a young, up-and-coming race car driver who has to learn how to handle the pressures of the job as well as the pressures of life.

If racing isn’t your jam, give Bull Durham a swing. It’s a baseball drama/comedy that stars Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon about the grind of minor-league baseball. Sarandon’s former husband Tim Robbins also stars in the film.

Comedy

Need a more light-hearted escape? Try Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, which stars Will Ferrell as a bumbling race car driver. This is considered one of Ferrell’s best comedies to date.

Let the laughs continue by watching the cult-classic This Is Spinal Tap, directed by Rob Reiner (The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally). This mockumentary about a rock-n-roll band is considered one of the funniest movies of the ’80s. Rob Reiner was already a small-screen comedy star because of All In The Family, but this put him on the map as a director.

Horror

Ok, let’s throw a bone to those of you that crave the thrill from a good scary movie. Horror and thriller movies set in North Carolina includes Cape Fear (Robert DeNiro), Kiss The Girls (Ashley Judd), and The Descent (Shauna MacDonald).

If you enjoy that feeling of someone following you or wondering if there are monsters under the bed, those movies should provide what you’re looking for. Just make sure to lock the doors before going to bed.

Noteworthy Mention

There are too many tv shows and films to include on this list. So let’s just leave you with one more notable mention in case none of the above were quite what you were looking for. Or maybe they weren’t quite “Carolina” enough.

With that said, nothing says “Carolina” quite like The Andy Griffith Show, set in the fake town of Mayberry, North Carolina. There are 259 hilarious episodes of the small-town adventures of Sheriff Andy, his family, and the many oddball characters of Mayberry. You’re sure to fall in love with this town and its inhabitants as you experience some nostalgia at the same time.

Arbitration Agreements in Case of Class Actions

0

Arbitration has become a popular alternative to litigation in civil disputes. It is one of three primary forms of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes, the other two being conciliation and mediation.

During an arbitration, a neutral third party listens to each party’s case and determines an outcome that is usually binding. Before entering the arbitration process, parties are informed that they waive their right to trial. However, certain class action arbitration peculiarities set this ADR process apart from its typical form where a single plaintiff sues a private or public legal person, such as a company. Here is some valuable information about arbitration and class action lawsuits.

Different lawsuits

Arbitration is typically used in disputes between individuals and large corporations, such as banks and insurance companies. However, it is also utilized when two corporations have a legal dispute. Arbitrators understand that there is the potential for millions of dollars in settlements that may have to be paid. Therefore, they must weigh each party’s case and make a ruling that is fair to both. In cases that carry this much weight, arbitrators may prefer to work as a panel instead of individually.

A class-action lawsuit features more than one plaintiff. Each claimant is suing the defendant for something similar. For example, a set of plaintiffs might sue a bank over unfair bank charges. While the case might not have much weight when only one person sues, it immediately becomes more serious when hundreds of plaintiffs add their names to the suit.

Court vs. arbitration

Litigation is a costly and time-consuming process. Some cases take years to reach a court by which time clients have mountains of legal bills to pay. Their bills may outweigh how much money they stand to receive if the judge awards them any. This may put clients off from proceeding with a lawsuit. Even once cases make it to court, delays and adjournments follow. Undertaking civil litigation is not the same as what people see on television shows and films. There are long, agonizing intervals between the filing of a lawsuit and its conclusion.

The arbitration process is far quicker than litigation. Getting a case before an arbitrator takes less time. Even the arbitration process itself takes less time, which means fewer billing hours from the attorney. Most clients opt for one form of ADR or another for these two reasons. While it is a formal process, arbitration is not as ceremonious as a court appearance. Some clients find this more appealing as the idea of testifying before a judge and jury intimidates or overwhelms them.

Arbitration clauses

Many contracts that consumers sign contain arbitration clauses in the fine print. They force the client to enter arbitration should a dispute arise. Large corporations with significant customer bases, such as banks, mortgage lenders, cellphone and internet service providers, and insurance companies utilize such clauses.

Unfortunately, in their haste to sign the agreement, many consumers do not understand what this means. For most, it is not a problem as arbitration following a dispute is one of the best ways to ensure a favorable outcome for all. However, the devil is in the detail, and many arbitration clauses include information about class action suits too.

Class action suit waivers

Many arbitration clauses forbid the use of this process if consumers participate in a class-action lawsuit. For clients, this means a long road ahead that involves litigation. While individuals and a company might be ready to negotiate during a class-action lawsuit, they do not have to do so or accept any offer. This is even more challenging during a class action suit as the attorney must get all plaintiffs to agree to a settlement agreement.

Even worse, some contracts contain a class action waiver, meaning that clients cannot participate in a class action lawsuit at all. They are expected to sue the company as individuals. Critics have labeled this an attempt to minimize consumer rights in favor of large corporations. They say that it will prevent clients from making claims about unfair practices.

For example, if a person has been overcharged $100 in bank fees, they are unlikely to go to court over it. However, what if a thousand people with the same issue banded together? But this may not happen if they signed a class action waiver in their agreement with the bank when they opened their account.

Class action arbitration in the future

Several lawsuits are challenging a Supreme Court ruling that made it virtually impossible for clients to enter a class action lawsuit and have it go before an arbitrator. However, until this happens, class action suits before arbitrators will be hindered unless companies do not include such clauses in their contracts with clients. This is yet another reason why consumers are urged to read the fine print before committing to any transactions to avoid nasty surprises when a dispute occurs.

Covid + Your Credit Health: Where You’ve Been Hit + How To Rebuild

0

In America, credit is king. Your credit score determines whether you can buy a house, launch your dream business, or qualify for a loan in the midst of unforeseen circumstances.

Your credit controls your ability to plan for the future you dream of. In the same way you take care of your health, shouldn’t you be monitoring the health of your credit score?

Like most Americans, you have likely suffered crushing loss or unemployment at the hands of the Covid-19 pandemic. Many have had to dip into savings, shutter their small business, and make sacrifices to keep their family afloat in these unprecedented times. Mississippi and the Carolinas have been hit especially hard, with both Mississippi and North and South Carolina ranking in the top 10 states experiencing small business loss and financial strain.

With an unforeseen global disaster on our hands, your credit score may be the last thing on your mind. Prioritize your future by identifying behaviors that are lowering your credit score and exploring strategies to rebuild in the midst of a pandemic.

Sneaky Culprits That Lower Your Credit Score

If you’re noticing a downturn in your credit score, let’s round up the usual suspects and explore what may be to blame for your credit damage.

Missing A Credit Card Payment

Falling behind on even one credit card payment can put you in a cycle of missed payments and debt, lowering your credit score and harming your financial future. Closely monitor your credit card activity and make sure you aren’t missing monthly payments.

Falling Behind On Rent Or Mortgage Payments

Did you know that 11 million American families are behind on their mortgage due to the pandemic, with almost 9 million behind on rent? According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, late housing payments have skyrocketed to rival those of The Great Recession of 2008, with many living in fear of eviction.

While the US Government is working to reduce pandemic-related evictions, it is still paramount to prioritize your housing payments. Failure to keep up with your mortgage can negatively affect your credit score and even end in foreclosure.

Trouble Keeping Up With Student Loans

According to national statistics, approximately 45 million Americans are saddled with crushing student loan debt, and with increased job loss and financial strain from the pandemic, borrowers are more burdened than ever before.

The good news is the federal government has extended student loan forbearance, granting borrowers like you an interest-free pause to their payments through September 2021. This should allow you to breathe and create a plan of attack once you have bounced back from the pandemic economy.

Taking Action: Tips To Build Back Your Credit Health

Now that you have hopefully identified the culprit of your low score, let’s discuss the tools at your disposal to help and rebuild (and maintain!) a healthy credit score during the pandemic and for years to come.

Every Little Payment Counts

Paying even the minimum amount on your credit card shows you are making an effort and can have a positive effect on your credit health. Try setting up an auto-payment on your credit card for a low amount, say $50 per month, and increase the payment as you are able.

Monitor Your Credit Reports

Hold yourself accountable and track your progress by staying up-to-date on your credit score. You can check your credit report as many times as you’d like for free with a site like Credit Karma, and checking won’t affect your score.

Don’t Be Afraid To Ask For Help

Sometimes living through unprecedented times calls for a different approach. If you’re struggling with debt and a lowered credit score due to the pandemic, it may be time to reach out for help. Talking with your lenders is a great place to start, as many have made exceptions for pandemic-related financial hardships.

If you’re suffering from unemployment, like the many residents of Mississippi and the Carolinas impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, consider reaching out to a financial coach or even a bankruptcy lawyer. Job losses lead to bankruptcy, and if you’re struggling with debt and in need of a clean slate due to the pandemic, you can only benefit by reaching out to a law professional and exploring your options.

Conclusion

The Coronavirus has impacted virtually every facet of our daily lives. In the face of an economic downturn, it can be easy to let monthly payments slip or fall behind on financial obligations like student loans.

Don’t let your credit score succumb to the Covid economy; monitor your credit health regularly and take steps to increase your score so you can take control of your future.

The Impact of Likes on YouTube: Reasons to Grow Their Numbers

0

Likes is a very important instrument of influence and growth on social media, and on YouTube in particular. There would not be a tactic which would not mention how important it is to gain these. For these strategies, some bloggers would use even paid YouTube likes. There are many reasons why you should pay attention to this metric on YouTube, and in this article you will discover them, and learn a few effective tips for increasing their number.

Attention Hook

YouTube is a social platform, thus the opinion of the community in general has a weight for an individual. When a video has many thumbs up, it is considered as a worthy content by many people, especially occasional visitors. In other words, likes on YouTube is a sort of a reputation marker, even though sometimes the original video can be described as useless.

But even the  thumbs up that are purchased can still do the job – drive the attention of the viewers to your content. In most cases, the opinion of the community will be true, though. That is because purchased likes are used for another reason, then maintaining the level of reputation on the platform.

Social Presence Marker

Another power of likes on YouTube is that they can prove your persona as someone savvy in the topic. People can perceive a big number of likes on your videos as a sign of your professional competence, and choose your content over the competitors. To make this thing work, you actually have to be fluent in a chosen niche. Otherwise your incompetence will be discovered soon and even the primary number of thumbs up will not help you to grow the audience the way you want it.

Ranking On The Platform

On YouTube thumbs up also are an important statistic for the ranking algorithms. The more likes your videos get, the better position you will embrace in the search results and YouTube trends. To reach the top place in the chosen industry is an ultimate goal of all YouTubers. So. Along with properly settled SEO optimization, you have to maintain the high level of affection for your content, thus remaining visible on the network and expanding your audience. But keeping your materials at the highest quality is a must, because when you will show the decrease of quality, you will inevitably experience the loss of interest and support for your content.

Feature Of The Successful Campaign

Nowadays YouTube is a big marketplace, as well as any other social platform. On YouTube it means that businesses compete for their customers through creating highly engaging campaigns for attracting and retaining their target group. And likes on this network are a good indicator that expresses the level of interest to each marketing campaign that is launched by the brand. Through the level of affection, businesses can measure the potential of the product on the market. And with promotions that gain high ratings, they increase their sales and recognition within and outside of YouTube.

Aid In Virality

One of the goals that are also craved by YouTube influencers is making the video go viral. And likes are a huge help in reaching it. More thumbs up are growing the potential of virality, as the video goes higher and higher in ratings of the platform. Of course, it is not the only component that the virality potential consists of, but one of the most important so far.

Competition Tool

Likes on YouTube, due to the previous reasons that are described here, is a perfect instrument for beating the competitors in your niche, even if you enter the well-populated industry like travels or cooking. For users, your appearance with a great number of likes under your videos means that a new persona has emerged and there is something interesting to check out. Usually, people are watching a bunch of bloggers who cover the same topics from different angles, so getting more thumbs up is your chance to reach success faster.

A Few Tips On Getting More Likes For Your Videos

Use Calls To Action

Calls to action, or CTA’s, are basically a name for directly asking your audience to do something. By this practice you are reminding your viewers to hit like, subscribe, or share your video. Although this method seems a bit bald, it actually works. Make sure you mention the actions you need in the video – this way viewers won’t forget their intention to like your content.

Explain The Importance Of Likes

Once in a while, you should gently remind your viewers that likes on YouTube have many benefits, and their thumbs up will help you to develop the channel. Basically likes help to support your rating and expand the audience, so you will have motivation to produce more content of high quality.

Create Content That Is Actually Good

Without that, all your efforts are useless, even if you invest in stats. Material is king of any social platform, so your primary concern is the worth of your videos. Are they entertaining, or educating? Do they reveal something interesting and original to your viewers? The competition is so high nowadays that users are very demanding. If your materials don’t bring anything unique, if the esthetic and details are not worked up to perfection, and if you just create informational junk – you won’t get many likes.

Aim For More Views

Nothing in your promotion doesn’t work without being implemented in a complex. Hence, likes are deeply connected with the number of views, so you have to think about this matter too. On average, a YouTuber gets 4 likes for each 100 views. It means that to get a huge quantity of thumb ups, you have to take care of getting an enormous number of views. First thing to reach this goal is to work on your SEO:

  • Write compelling titles with keywords included
  • Add relevant tags for your video
  • Create custom thumbnails to catch the attention of the audience at once
  • Include keywords into your video descriptions naturally
  • Create a consistent visual identification markers (in other words, brand your content)

Research The Niche

In order to get the most of your potential, you need to explore the content that already exists in a certain niche. And after you understand what YouTube already has to offer, you can introduce something original enough to secure your fast and effective growth. Creating something outstanding is giving you a higher chance to beat the competition and gain more likes from the users who would be impressed by a fresh face and new ideas. Making content that no one else does can buy you reputation points easily, along with views, likes, and other important growth statistics.

Bond With Your Audience

Another good like grosser is creating the relationship with your subscribers. Being friendly and open-hearted is always a winning strategy, and it works on YouTube too. Users like to feel involved in the content, which is why you should keep the engagement rate up in order to get more likes from your loyal followers.

  • Host contests
  • Play games
  • Ask questions
  • Reply to as many comments as you can
  • Do not forget to answer to new comments under older videos
  • Listen to the ideas your followers express
  • Make friends with other bloggers, etc.

Experiment And Take Risks

It is impossible to ride the same original idea all the time you are present on YouTube. To push your limits and grow your blog, you have to introduce new types of content from time to time. Even the best content can become boring without changes and motion, so you should mix up the traditional materials with new ideas once in a while. And likes, along with comments and general stats analysis, will help you to understand if your experiment is successful.

Charlotte Man Drives Car Into Pond After Daring High Speed Police Chase

    0

Yesterday afternoon, a Charlotte man drove himself and 2 passengers into a private pond in Union County after a high-speed police chase involving multiple squad cars and CMPD’s ‘Snoopy’ police helicopter.

The chase began just after 4 pm as CMPD officers were pursuing what they believed to be a stolen vehicle. When they crossed into Union County, several Union County Sheriff’s deputies also joined the chase.

The driver turned down a private road in Indian Trail and began circling a pond before losing control and going for a “swim in the pond”.

The driver of the “water taxi” has since been identified as 48-year-old Ward Baxter Weiland. Weiland is now being charged with multiple counts of Habitual Felon, Felony Speeding to Elude, Driving while Impaired, Possession of Stolen Goods, and several other driving-related charges.

The male passenger, 62-year-old Armond Dewayne Douglas, was also taken into custody on outstanding warrants. The Union County Sheriff’s office also noted; “the female occupant of the water taxi was released and does not face charges.”
