2.6 Magnitude Earthquake Just Struck South Carolina

Monday evening at 6:55pm, a 2.6 magnitude earthquake rocked Summit, SC, just west of Columbia, and about 60 miles south of Charlotte.

According to the USGS, the quake 1.7 km depth and an epicenter of 33.892°N 81.448°W.

Earthquakes have been increasing in frequency around the Charlotte region over the past few years. Last summer, North Carolina experienced a 5.1 magnitude earthquake (the largest our state has seen in over 100 years) and 2 years ago, we saw a 4.4 magnitude quake hit Decatur, TN.

According to USGS.gov, “Moderately damaging earthquakes strike the inland Carolinas every few decades, and smaller earthquakes are felt about once each year or two.”

Charlotte Motor Speedway Hosting Massive Free Vaccine Clinic This Weekend

This weekend, Atrium Health will be partnering with the Charlotte Motor Speedway to hold one of the region’s largest free Covid-19 vaccine clinic.

The pop-up clinic will be located in the Speedway’s Fan Zone across from Smith Tower and the Gate 3 Fan Care Center.

The schedule will be as follows:

  • Friday, May 28: 6pm-8pm
  • Saturday, May 29: 10:30am-1:30pm
  • Sunday, May 30: 3:30pm-6:30pm

This past January, the speedway hosted one of the first large-scale vaccine clinic in the Carolinas.

USAA Releases Details On Their Move To Charlotte – Will Add 750 New Jobs

USAA today released the details about their move to Charlotte, which we initially reported on this past Monday.

The fortune 100 company, which primarily serves the military community, entered into a lease agreement for The Square at South End located at 200 West Boulevard. This move supports USAA’s efforts to attract talented audit, banking, legal, risk management and technology professionals.

“Employers looking for a highly skilled work force and high quality of life keep coming to North Carolina,” said Governor Roy Cooper. “We pride ourselves on being the most military and veteran friendly state in the nation and I’m proud that USAA, which has provided for military families since 1922, has decided to expand its presence in Charlotte.”

The new location was selected because of the availability of highly skilled individuals in the financial services sector.

“Opening an office in Charlotte is a win-win for USAA,” said USAA President and CEO Wayne Peacock. “It gives us even greater access to some of the top banking and technology professionals in a community that has a deep understanding and care for the military. USAA has been serving military families for nearly a century and we are excited to begin our second century with a growing presence in Charlotte.”

This new regional office location will eventually host approximately 750 employees who will work either onsite or in a hybrid model.

USAA is leasing six floors of the 10-story, 153,000-square-foot building consisting of approximately 90,000 square feet of office space. Employees are expected to begin moving into the building by the end of 2021.

According to a new report from Apartment List, Charlotte just witnessed one of the largest rental rate increases in the country over the past month.
On a national level, the report notes that the US index jumped by 2.3%, setting a record for month-over-month growth for the 3rd month in a row. Rent growth has now been outpacing prior-year averages for several months, and the national median rent has now officially surpassed the level where we expect it would have been if the pandemic had never happened.
The data continues to show significant regional variation. Rents in a number of markets are still well below pre-pandemic levels, but prices in these cities are rapidly rebounding. At the other end of the spectrum, many of the mid-sized markets that have seen rents grow quickly through the pandemic are continuing to boom.

NBA Legend Magic Johnson Throwing Opening Pitch For Gastonia Honey Hunter’s First Game

Tonight the Gastonia Honey Hunters will play their first regular season game in the newly minted $22 million FUSE District Stadium.

The city isn’t holding anything back to celebrate the long anticipated team and new stadium.

Gastonia Mayor Walker Reid has just proclaimed today Honey Hunters Day and announced that NBA legend Magic Johnson will be coming to town to throw out the first pitch.

For today’s opening game, the Gastonia Honey Hunters will be taking on the Lancaster Barnstormers starting at 6:50 p.m., with a massive fireworks show to finish.
