NCDHHS Is Now Testing The Feces of Charlotte Residents For COVID Shedding

With fewer people contracting Covid-19 and therefore fewer people getting tested for the virus, the NC Department of Health and Human Services has turned to a creative solution to gather data on how many people are still contracting the virus in our state.

They’ve now set up several “wastewater monitoring stations” to test the shedding of viral loads from potentially infected residents of the state.

According to an official statement by NCDHHS, “Wastewater monitoring is being used to follow COVID-19 trends within a community. People with COVID-19 illness shed the virus in their feces shortly after they are infected, often before they experience symptoms. People who are infected but never show symptoms can also shed the virus. By testing a community’s wastewater, we can measure the amount of the virus in a community-wide sample and see whether levels of the virus are increasing, decreasing, or staying the same.”

There are currently 2 monitoring sites in Charlotte, one that tests the bio-waste of 68,685 people around the Cornelius and Huntersville areas and another one that tests about 182,501 people living in Southeast Charlotte.

Duke Energy Announces $56 Million EV Network Across NC – The Most Advanced in The Nation

Following six months of stakeholder input, Duke Energy recently filed an additional $56 million proposal of Phase II programs to continue the advancement of transportation electrification in North Carolina.

The filing follows the November 2020 N.C. Utilities Commission (NCUC) order approving the company’s $25 million Phase I electric transportation pilot program.

In its earlier order, the NCUC instructed Duke Energy to work with the Public Staff to organize a collaborative stakeholder process and then file any stakeholder-developed pilot programs.

“The move to an electric-driven transportation sector will include input from stakeholders from across North Carolina,” said Stephen De May, Duke Energy’s North Carolina president. “Our filing reflects the best ideas we heard on how Duke Energy can spur that transition.”

Although North Carolina has more than 26,000 electric vehicles in the state, Gov. Roy Cooper’s Executive Order 80 set forth a statewide goal of getting 80,000 zero-emission vehicles on the road by 2025.

Duke Energy’s efforts will lead to more than 1,000 charging ports being installed in the state. The company’s Phase II pilot programs will:

  • Build on the company’s earlier pilot by expanding DC fast charging on state highways, charging at multifamily dwellings and provide financial support to school systems to purchase 60 electric school buses.
  • Support the continued development of the competitive market for DC fast charging by requiring multiple providers of the hardware and software, creating a transparent stakeholder informed process around vendor selection that allows for alternative pricing by site hosts.
  • Create a pilot for a tariffed EV charging program for residential and business customers. This program allows for customers to install and operate EV charging stations for a low monthly rate with the customer making all operational choices, including brand of hardware and network. In many cases, this may be a zero upfront cost option for customers charging EVs.

Separate from the Phase II filing, on April 30 the company filed for approval of a make-ready tariff that will provide credits to reduce the upfront cost of upgrading electrical systems to install charging infrastructure for homeowners and businesses.

“High upfront costs prevent our customers from unlocking the substantial benefits of EVs, and this challenge is especially prevalent for low- and moderate-income families,” said Lon Huber, Duke Energy’s vice president of rate design and strategic solutions. “These new programs remove a key financial barrier to adoption, enabling everyone to benefit from the expanded use of electric vehicles.”

Huber added that the collaborative stakeholder meetings in North Carolina will continue to review how the Phase II pilot programs are performing and to discuss innovative ways to expand the EV market, including additional rate designs and programs.

How Charlotte became an American financial hub

Charlotte carries with it a historical legacy that lends itself to financial growth and relevance. Almost as early as it was founded back in the mid-1700s has Charlotte served as a centre of transportation.  During the US’ tumultuous Civil War, Charlotte provided the Confederacy with important railheads (a starting block for roads and other routes).  Fast-forward to the 1960s where it served as the birthplace for Henson Airlines that over the course of time and merger and acquisitions would eventually become American Airlines. However, in order to know Charlotte’s main economic boost, we must once again look back into the annals of history  – way before the days of trading in USD and other currencies.  Fifty years prior to the California gold rush – 1799 to be precise – the surrounding area of Charlotte was where gold was found for the very first time in the US.  By the start of the 20th century the mines had been exhausted but the financial industries that it had birthed were entrenched and established, allowing Charlotte to hold on to its status as a centre of banking and finance.  Nowadays Charlotte is home to both Bank of America and the East Coast headquarters of Wells Fargo. As a result, it is considered second only to New York in terms of important US banking hubs. 

Continued growth in Charlotte

Finance alone is not responsible for Charlotte’s formidable stature. The business of finance involves all kinds of other sectors, all meshing and flowing into each other to create a climate of growth and ultimately, prosperity.  Other notable sectors include energy, electronics and building, emphasised by companies like Duke Energy, Honeywell and Lowe’s.  As work begets more work and more work  brings about more opportunities, Charlotte’s population continues to rise.
