NBA Has Just Threatened To Move 2017 All-Star Game If HB2 Is Not Repealed Within 30 Days

0

NBA threatening to move all star gameThe NBA is now threatening to move the 2017 All Star Games out of Charlotte if the new HB2 legislation is not repealed. The HB2 law was initially passed on March 23rd in response to Charlotte’s new ‘bathroom bill’ and LGBT non-discrimination class additions.

“With this new law in place, Charlotte currently does not have any anti-discrimination protection in place, something that would be vital for a large event such as the All-Star Game. We are giving the state of North Carolina 30 days to repeal this law or they can expect the 2017 All-Star game to be held elsewhere. I want to make it clear that the NBA will not stand for this type of intolerance and hate.” NBA commissioner Adam Silver told reporters in a news conference today. ”

Atlanta’s City Council introduced a resolution at a meeting asking the NBA to consider Atlanta after NC legislature signed HB2. A move to Atlanta seems unlikely considering that Georgia does not currently have any more LGBT protections than North Carolina now does.

North Carolina’s new HB2 law prevents Charlotte and other local governments from passing any LGBT ordinances that conflict with current state laws. North Carolina’s Republican-led Legislature said Charlotte city leaders went too far with a local anti-discrimination ordinance that, among other things, would have allowed men and women to public restrooms, locker rooms, and shower facilities of any sex they chose.

After Atlanta’s resolution to the NBA this past week, NC Governor McRory responded back by saying that North Carolina isn’t the only state to pursue such legislation.

“Thankfully no college team from Georgia made the Final Four again this year. Otherwise, the Atlanta City Council would have to boycott the City of Houston where voters overwhelmingly rejected a bathroom ordinance that was nearly identical to the one rejected by State of North Carolina,” said an emailed statement from McRory communications director Josh Ellis.

What do you think about the new HB2 law?

Muslim Woman Was Removed From Donald Trump Rally in Rock Hill

0

As Donald Trump was telling his Rock Hill, SC supporters this past Friday night that Syrian refugees who come to America “probably are ISIS,” a woman sitting in the stands behind him silently stood up.

The crowd soon erupted, chanting: “Trump! Trump! Trump!” (which they were told to do as a formal signal for security to remove someone).

She was joined by several other protesters, all wearing yellow eight-pointed stars, reminiscent of the six-pointed stars Jews were forced by the Nazis to wear on their clothing during the Holocaust. On the eight-pointed stars, a common symbol in the Islamic world, was this message: “Stop Islamophobia.”

muslim woman rock hillRose Hamid, a 56-year-old flight attendant, was interviewed after the rally by CNN. Hamid told reporters that some of the Trump supporters sitting near her were kind and apologized as she was led out. But she said others accused her of having a bomb or shouted “Get out!”

“This demonstrates how when you start dehumanizing the other, it can turn people into very hateful, ugly people. It needs to be known,” she remarked to CNN.

Many people took to Twitter to show their support for Rose;

While others said she knew she would be kicked out;

Do you think she should have been removed?

Mecklenburg Just Voted 8-1 To Cancel The New i77 Toll Lanes

0

toll lanes stoppedThis past Monday night, Mecklenburg County Commissioners voted 8-1 against the new I-77 toll lanes, which is in line with what the public outcries have been saying (which is reflected on our recent toll lane petition).

The contested toll lanes are currently under construction, and are currently projected to cost over $650 million, but there is still time for North Carolina to back out on the deal.

The Spanish company named Cintra is currently financing the deal – if NC decided to back out on their 50-year contract, state auditors project that it will cost anywhere from $82 to $300 million.

This past Monday’s vote by the county commissioners will force the Charlotte City Council to hold a public hearing on the I-77 toll lanes next week. Following the public hearing the council will vote on how to direct it’s members of the CRTPO to vote on the toll plan.

The final CRTPO vote will take place on January 20, and if they vote no, the project will be dead.

Gov. McCrory Told Charlotte To Vote On Toll Lanes – Sign This Petition For Them To Vote No

toll lanes charlotte vote

Gov. Pat McCrory has told local transportation leaders in Charlotte that they must finalize their vote within the month on the new i77 toll lanes.

mccroryIn a letter sent Monday, the Governor asked the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization to either vote in support of the toll lanes or “set in motion the necessary steps to create a new regional transportation plan.”

Some towns along i77 have already voted in support of the toll lanes, but the City of Charlotte is the key vote for the project, as it has a weighted vote worth 31 of the 68 total votes needed to finalize the new toll lanes.

A Charlotte city transportation committee will meet Jan. 4. to take a specific vote on the I-77 project.

Since gathering over 10,000 signatures in under a week, we delivered a hard-copy of this petition to the Mecklenburg Co. board to get them to vote no as their final decision, but they will be monitoring this online petition, so the more signatures we continue to raise the more they will have no choice but to vote no;
