couple got married on Fury 325 roller coasterJames Music and Cortni Bryant decided to relive their first date on their wedding day – and turn their favorite roller coaster into a wedding chapel.

James met Cortni in high school and took her to Carowinds for their first date.

“The first thing we did was ride Fury 325 and I had ridden it before but the ride was just so amazing and we just couldn’t get enough of it. We would get off and get right back in line again,” Cortni commented.

They loved it so much that they ended up riding it a total of 12 times before the park closed and they were asked to leave.

As soon as they got engaged they started joking about what it would be like to get married at Carowinds…James then decided to see if it was possible.

This week they made history by becoming the first couple to say “I do” on the tallest and fastest giga coaster in the world:

The whole wedding party joined the couple on their private train, with James, Cortni, and their minister sitting up front to exchange vows and say their “I dos”.

Carowinds has stated that although it’s now the fastest wedding every to take place at the park, it wasn’t the first on a roller coaster – they’ve also hosted weddings on the Thunder Road rollercoaster and Borg rollercoaster (which is now called Nighthawk).

58 year old Danny Brown was attempting to rob her, when another women heard her scream and approached the pair to ask questions.

“She (the witness) asked the woman if she was OK, and the woman said ‘No,’ and the man said, ‘Yes, she’s OK,’” commented local business owner Richard McCluskey, who was also in the area when the altercation took place.

Rock Hill Police noted that once the woman realized something was wrong, she threw her car keys at Danny, allowing the victim to get free.

The women who witnessed the altercation, and who threw the keys then immediately called 911.

Police arrived on the scene within minutes and the witness described the attacker. Officers quickly realized that it was the same man they saw running toward City Hall (a block from the police department). Officers then chased Danny into City Hall, then arrested him.

Danny Brown was immediately brought into court, where he told the judge that he was homeless, has no bank account, car or income, other than a monthly disability check.

Brown is now being held without bond, waiting for his upcoming criminal trial.

Formerly Contaminated White Water Center Water About To Be Discharged Into Catawba River

3

white water center riverjamThe water that tested positive for a deadly brain-eating amoeba that killed an Ohio teen is about to return to the Catawba River – but not after it’s been heavily treated and filtered.

Catawba Riverkeeper Sam Perkins has commented that the sooner the water is returned, the better, since it’s now sitting in a reserve pool and potentially growing even more organisms that may be harmful.

“The longer the water sits there, it’s going to become a Petri dish,” Perkins commented.

Six to 7 million gallons of water have been drained into a lower pool at the center and treated with several rounds of chlorine followed by repetitive ultraviolet light sessions.

The chlorination is expected to kill 99.9% of the amoeba before the ultraviolet treatment, after which time the water must be treated before being released into the Catawba River, as to not affect the natural wildlife.

The disinfected water is now scheduled to be discharged into the Catawba River some time this week, though whitewater center officials say they do not have an exact schedule for the release.

The water will be free of silt and any kind of nutrients. As long as the water isn’t too warm, it shouldn’t cause any harm to fish in the river.

After Texas Police Shootings, North Carolina Passes Law To Block Access Of Police Body Cam Footage

north carolina police body cam lawGovernor Pat McCrory just signed House Bill 972 into law that will block public access to any future police body cam footage. The new law is in direct opposition of many civil liberties groups, who have actually been lobbying and protesting for increased access to body cam footage.

“Body cameras should be a tool to make law enforcement more transparent and accountable to the communities they serve, but this shameful law will make it nearly impossible to achieve those goals,” commented Susanna Birdsong with the North Carolina ACLU.

The current state law doesn’t specifically indicate whether police body cam footage is public record or a personal record, but now, with the new law that will go into effect on October 1st, the footage will neither be public information nor personal record. It will remain the private property of the police department until a court orders that it can be viewed by an outside party.

Police chiefs will also have the option of granting limited access, after considering if disclosure of the footage might harm someone’s reputation or safety, or if its confidentiality is “necessary to protect either an active or inactive internal or criminal investigation or potential internal or criminal investigation.”

The new law will also stipulate that any law enforcement agency who may want to publicly release body cam footage must first obtain a Superior Court judge’s order.

While signing the new law, Governor McCrory stated that, “Technology like dashboard and body cameras can be very helpful, but when used by itself, technology can also mislead and misinform, which also causes other issues and problems within our community. What we need to do is walk that fine line.”

Here is the governor’s full speech:

In the wake of this new legislation, many people have actually started buying their own body cameras and dashboard cameras to use if and when they get pulled over.
