Reckless thieves broke into a Charlotte-area speedway yesterday morning and stole an entire ATM.
According to the police report, the suspects pulled their vehicle up to the front doors of the University City Speedway gas station, attached at a chain to the doors, and ripped them off their hinges. They then ran inside and loaded the machine onto their pick-up truck and drove off.
The robbery took place at 10925 University Boulevard in NorthEast Charlotte at 3:30am on Saturday morning, the broken doors, glass, and debris was still on the ground into the morning. By Saturday afternoon the doors were boarded up and the Safeway was closed for the time being.

A historic 1891 mill just outside Center City is about to be transformed into a massive 160,000 square foot market and retail hub filled with unique shops and restaurants.
The developers want to keep the history of the building intact, while also transforming the complex into a modern pedestrian hub.
The new Highland Park mill makes even more sense when you consider it’s right next to what will be the first stop on the new light rail line. (at the corner of North Brevard and East 16th)
The current plans call for a large courtyard facing uptown, 449 parking spaces, 60,000 square feet of restaurants, retail, and a farmers market, and 100,000 square feet of loft-style, open-floor offices, according to the Charlotte Observer.
Jay Levell, one of the main developers with White Point Partners commented, “We’re going to create some of the best outdoor space in Charlotte.” The large building’s large windows will be restored to bring light in to the mill and create an “indoor-outdoor” feel as well.
Topgolf Charlotte has been one of the most highly-anticipated developments in our city, with tens of thousands of social media shares on almost every article written about it.
Now, just a month before they open on their first Charlotte-area location, they’re already planning on building their second one.
A re-submitted zoning proposal has been filed for a major development project in University City, near West Mallard Creek Rd. and I-85, that would include 395 apartments and 45,000 square feet of mixed-use space, including “eating/drinking/entertainment with golf-related entertainment uses” (the revised plans also included Topgolf logos):
According to the Charlotte Business Journal, “a spokeswoman for Topgolf said the company is ‘looking into a second site in the area’, but declined to comment on specifics.”
Topgolf is a “golf entertainment complex” offering targeted games where players hit ‘microchipped’ balls as close to various targets and special zones as possible. The balls individually record their location before and after they are hit, and give individual scores for each player.
They will also feature a full food and drink menu – catering to golfers and non-golfers of all skill levels.
The high-tech golf company now has 30 facilities around the U.S. and 3 in the U.K., and their currently expanding to 14 new facilities in the US, Mexico, and Australia.

The Charlotte region is now home to one of the only prosthetic-legged goats in America.
According to WCNC, “Frosty was just a baby when he got a bad infection in his right knee. When he was two years old, a bad fall complicated things. Doctors knew they’d have to amputate, and even recommended putting him down.”
Frosty’s owner, Deb Barry, fell in love with Frosty and couldn’t bear the thought of having to put him down.
She thought he would start learning how to move around on just three legs, but it just never happened.
She called in an artificial limb specialist from Florida to have a cast formed that would fit him just right.
Now that the new $10,000 prosthetic leg is attached, Frosty couldn’t be happier.
In honor of National Brain Tumor Awareness Month, the local Dunkin’ Donuts franchisees have stepped up to the plate to help Charlotte’s favorite “Coach,” child cancer survivor, Braylon Beam.
Beam is in full swing to raise money for his newly formed Bring It 4 Braylon Foundation.
Dunkin’ Donuts will donate 50 cents for each Dunkin’ Donuts limited-edition, Braylon-inspired donut sold May 7-20.
The ring donut, which has white icing with blue-icing drizzle, was specially designed for the Charlotte metro restaurants only.
“We are so honored that the local franchisees chose our foundation, and are giving back to the community in such a big way,” states Jesse Beam, Braylon’s father. “By meeting so many of the Dunkin’ Donuts owners and employees in person, we’ve been reminded that they are a member of the community just like us; it’s a great example of neighbors helping one another. We’re hoping everyone can take a simple step to enjoy a donut in support of those many Charlotte families who have a child battling cancer.”
More than 28,000 children (0-14 years of age) are estimated to be living with a brain tumor in the U.S. The mission of the Bring It 4 Braylon Foundation is to help alleviate the burden associated with pediatric cancer by providing comprehensive support to families and individuals in the Charlotte area who are fighting the disease. Donations help the Foundation provide gas cards, groceries, trips and other gifts to families.
One of the biggest names in the culinary world was just spotted in Charlotte at 2 local restaurants.
British chef Gordon Ramsay was first spotted waiting for a table at Uptown’s 5Church restaurant, and later that day he was seen at the Marriott City Center’s restaurant, Stoke, signing a fan’s knife:

According to a spokesman for the chef, Ramsay was in Charlotte to film several segments of his new competition show called “The F Word”, which features Ramsay teaching families around the country how to make incredible meals at home that are still healthy.
The show features families cooking-off against one another, then facing a panel of judges.
The new show will premier on Fox this coming May 31st.
Several golfers in North Carolina got an incredible surprise this week while out for a casual game of golf.
On Wednesday morning, an estimated 12 foot long gator was spotted walking across the parking lot and putting practice area of the Oak Island Golf Club.
The golf club, which is located just south of Wilmington, posted a video to their Facebook page yesterday morning. It shows shows the creature walking from the parking lot to the putting practice area without taking any apparent notice of the crowd and armature videographers.
Alligators are becoming an increasingly common site around golf courses and man-made canals as much of their natural habitats are being lost to new construction around the Carolinas.
According to the Statesville Record & Landmark, a pack of wild coyotes killed a deer and two dogs this week in a Iredell County man’s front yard.
“It all happened within a blink of an eye,” Barringer, 53, said. “It’s just a sick feeling.”
The attack occurred at David Barringer’s home on Old Mill Drive, off Highway 70 on Monday morning. Moments after he let his 2 Dachshunds outside, a pack of coyotes attacked and killed a deer, then one of his dogs, and chased and presumably killed the other dog.
He then started running and screaming at the coyotes, which caused them to scatter (a tactic he remembered hearing from one of his neighbors).

South End Hops Festival will hold its fourth annual event for beer enthusiasts and the benefit of RescuedMe, a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing dogs in dire need, rehabilitating them and placing them in stable, loving homes.

North Carolina Publix customers are now being warned about possible glass fragments in store brand containers of their Deli Artichoke Dip and Spinach Dip.
They have issued a full recall of all products using the potentially contaminated 16-ounce container.
The containers have a UPC of 000-41415-15961, and a use-by-date of May 16 A1 and May 16 C1, printed on the lid of the container. They are found in the refrigerated cases of the deli.
If you have purchased one of the products in question, you can return it to your local store for a full refund.
