It’s finally starting to feel like summer here in the Queen City.

Today we saw temperatures reach a scorching 92°, with the heat index much higher. This unexpected heat caused most A/C units to work overtime, and one in Uptown Charlotte even caught fire due to the heat.

One of the units on top of 300 S Tryon St. in Uptown caught fire this afternoon, causing the entire building to be evacuated, according to several of the employees.

The fire is now under control and some of the employees have been able to re-enter the building.

Stay cool out there Charlotte!

Coroner Announces 16-Year-Old South Carolina Boy Died From Caffeine Overdose

davis-cripe-caffeine-overdoseThe Richland County coroner’s office held a press conference today where they announced that the cause of 16-year-old Davis Allen Cripe was a caffeine overdose.

Davis Allen Cripe collapsed at Spring Hill High School back on April 26 and died soon after arriving at the hospital. Cripe had consumed a large diet Mountain Dew, a latte and an energy drink before his heart “fell out of rhythm,” according to the Associated Press.

“It was so much caffeine at the time of his death that it caused his arrhythmia,” commented Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.

“Based on his weight, the intake of caffeine that he had exceeded what is considered a safe level,” Watts said.

“You can have five people line up and all of them do the exact same thing with him that day, drink more, and it may not have any type of effect on them at all,” Watts said. “It’s not something that just because you drink one drink or three drinks is necessarily going to have this effect on.”

Sean Cripe, Davis’ father, also made an announcement at the press conference.

“Davis was a great kid, and being his parent was a great honor to Heidi [his mother] and me,” he commented. “I stand before you as a brokenhearted father and hope that something good can come from this.”

“Parents, please, talk to your kids about the dangers of these energy drinks,” he continued. “And teenagers and students, please stop buying them.”

Charlotte Ranked Among U-Haul’s Top 10 U.S. Destination Cities

dsc09338-small-editedIn at No. 10, Charlotte, N.C., is among the U-Haul Top 10 U.S. Destination Cities for 2016, rising four spots from its previous destination ranking of No. 14, according to the latest U-Haul migration trends report.

Charlotte witnessed an 8.9 percent increase in arrivals over 2015 to become one of the top 10 busiest U.S. cities for incoming U-Haul trucks.

“We have wonderful weather, all the major sports teams and job growth galore,” said Brad Pruitt, U-Haul Company of Charlotte president. “Charlotte has become a banking center and is consequently the nation’s second largest financial center. People are packing up their U-Haul trucks and heading to The Queen City in droves.”

U-Haul Destination Cities are ranked according to the total number of arriving one-way U-Haul truck rentals to a city in the past calendar year. Destination Cities do not account for departing traffic and thus do not necessarily reflect growth like U-Haul Growth Cities. Destination Cities reflect the volume and regularity of do-it-yourself movers coming into a community.

2 Charlotte Breweries Are Taking The State of North Carolina To Court

old-meck-breweryTwo Charlotte breweries have just filed a constitutional challenge to a state law that limits local breweries from producing any more than 25,000 barrels per year.

Last month, the NC House passed HB 500, which initially increased the self-distribution production cap to 200,000 barrels annually, but that provision was taken out at the last minute. They also removed another provision that would have allowed smaller brewers to end their contracts with their wholesale partners without having to pay a fortune. According to HB 500’s sponsor, Rep. Chuck McGrady, the N.C. Beer & Wine Wholesalers Association weren’t willing to allow the NC House to pass the new bill with those provisions attached.

Olde Mecklenburg and NoDa breweries filed a joint lawsuit earlier today, in which they accused the state of North Carolina of engaging in “economic protectionism.”

The lawsuit claims that North Carolina’s distribution cap and franchise laws are unconstitutional and “artificially suppressing” the state’s craft beer industry (now estimated to have an annual economic impact of $1.2 billion).

“First, North Carolina’s ‘Distribution Cap’ punishes craft breweries for their own success by forcing them to hand over the rights to distribute their own beer to private distributors if they sell more than 25,000 barrels — a cap that is arbitrary and ensnares small but successful craft breweries,” the lawsuit states. “Second, North Carolina’s ‘Franchise Law’ forces craft breweries to enter into oppressive, one-sided contracts with distributors that literally last forever, and which require the breweries to turn over control of their product — including pricing — to the distributors.”

It goes on to argue that “franchise laws leave the breweries powerless in an oppressive and illusory ‘contractual’ relationship with no recourse. Craft brewers who question their distributors’ efforts face the real and legitimate prospect of the distributor intentionally ignoring that craft brewery’s brand and promoting competing brands — effectively extinguishing the craft brewery’s business. The craft brewery, meanwhile, has no remedy. Craft brewers have no choice but to submit to their distributors’ will, or else face financial ruin.”

Residents in Matthews Are Petitioning To Stop The New John Street ‘Super Road’

0

matthews-john-street-wideningOver a thousand local residents have now signed an online petition to ask the Mayor of Matthews to stop the new John Street expansion, a project many are calling the ‘Super Road’.

According to the NCDOT’s project page for the John Street widening, “proposed work would improve traffic flow, reduce travel delays and allow for more vehicles to travel in the area. Bicyclists and pedestrians would also have accommodations along the project corridor.”

Opponents to the new widening project say that there are other roads that would better alleviate congestion, without harming the neighborhood feel of Matthews.

Their online petition notes that, “John Street in Matthews, NC certainly has a traffic problem. Before relying on an experimental, unproven super street design to solve this issue, we encourage town officials and the NCDOT to finish other street projects that will alleviate traffic Matthews traffic.”

What are your thoughts about Matthew’s new ‘Super Road’?

Channing Tatum, Daniel Craig, and Katie Holmes Are Coming To Charlotte To Film ‘Logan Lucky’

0

logan-lucky-in-charlotteIn about 2 weeks, some of the biggest stars in Hollywood will be coming to the Charlotte region to film the upcoming film called ‘Logan Lucky’ – the biggest movie to be shot in Charlotte since last year’s ‘Masterminds‘.

The premise of the new comedy involves the siblings of the Logan family attempting to reverse a family curse. Siblings Jimmy, (Channing Tatum) Mellie (Riley Keough) and Clyde Logan (Adam Driver) attempt to execute an elaborate robbery during the Coca-Cola 600, after accomplice Joe Bang (Daniel Craig) gets out of prison.

During an Entertainment Weekly interview, director Steven Soderbergh called his new heist movie is a radical take on the wildly popular ocean’s movies, “on the most obvious level, it’s the complete inversion of an Ocean’s movie. It’s an anti-glam version of an Ocean’s movie. Nobody dresses nice. Nobody has nice stuff. They have no money. They have no technology. It’s all rubber band technology, and that’s what I thought was fun about it. It seemed familiar to me, but different enough. The landscape, the characters, and the canvass were the complete opposite of an Ocean’s film.”

The full cast, who will presumably all be in the Charlotte area over the next few weeks, includes:

Katherine Waterston Katherine Waterston
Riley Keough Riley Keough
Mellie Logan
Channing Tatum Channing Tatum
Jimmy Logan
Adam Driver Adam Driver
Clyde Logan
Daniel Craig Daniel Craig
Joe Bang
Sebastian Stan Sebastian Stan
Hilary Swank Hilary Swank
Seth MacFarlane Seth MacFarlane
Max Chilblain
Katie Holmes Katie Holmes
Bobbie Jo Logan Chapman
David Denman David Denman
Moody
Jim O'Heir Jim O’Heir
Macon Blair Macon Blair
Dwight Yoakam Dwight Yoakam
Jack Quaid Jack Quaid
Brian Gleeson Brian Gleeson
Sam Bang

The new movie will be opening across the country on August 18th.

The Changing Way New Construction Homes Are Sold

After 12 years of focusing primarily on general brokerage sales, The David Hoffman Group, Inc. (dba. DHG Network across the country) is now the face of new home sales.

On-site Partners is the new builder division based out of their headquarters in Charlotte, NC, and led by owner and founder, David Hoffman, and former new homes executive and current DHG broker, Brian Jordan.

on-site-partners-charlotte-david-hoffman-group“Leading with the principles of each client relationship being crucial to us, we look forward to partnering with like-minded builders within the communities that we serve across the country.  Our builder partners are finding our hundreds of years in real estate experience, coupled with Brian’s new home sales experience and leadership to be invaluable to the client” says David Hoffman.

“Coaching, training, recruiting, hiring, and replacing agents is managed by DHG.  Compensation for an entire sales management department is eliminated and the client benefits from our top-producing experienced agents and brokers” says David.

david-hoffman-groupDavid continues to say that “the platform for builders is an attractive model in today’s market for many reasons, right now the market is strong but during a shift in the market, or recession this model becomes even more effective”

“When we were looking at entering the Charlotte market, we wanted to partner with an established real estate firm; one that had both new construction and general brokerage experience, while leading with customer experience and relationships. We also value the sales training, coaching, and agent force needed to serve our clients fully. This is what David and Brian, and the team at DHG have to offer.  It’s a great partnership for all parties involved,” says Rick Caruthers, Executive Vice President of Century Communities.

“Meeting Street chose The David Hoffman Group, Inc. and On-Site Partners for multiple reasons.  One, we wanted to improve the buying experience for our customers.  Two, we wanted to have new home sales people, not just a listing agency, to pay attention to the small details that could be the tipping point for additional sales, and three, DHG provides the type of support we wanted to have for our group of sales people. Meeting Street, and the group at On-Site Partners and DHG have similar core values and business practices that are of great importance to both companies.  We have been very pleased with the addition of DHG to Meeting Street,” says Abe Lehman, General Manager at Meeting Street Homes and Communities.

The vision is to expand the builder division into as many locations where DHG is currently located, as well as in future locations not yet determined. This model will improve the quality of service and expertise provided to the consumer, while lowering the risk for unbuilt lots, and bringing jobs to the communities where they serve.
