There Have Been Over 121,000 Child Abuse Cases in North Carolina This Past Year

0
rebecca-starnes-chsncEarly data shows there were over 121,000 investigated cases of child abuse and neglect in North Carolina during fiscal year July 2018 through June 2019. State law requires individuals or institutions suspecting child abuse or neglect to report cases to the Division of Social Services (DSS) for investigation (G.S. 7B-301).
“The high number of children impacted by neglect or abuse indicates too many families are struggling and under severe stress,” said Rebecca Starnes, Vice President of Children’s Home Society of North Carolina. “Abuse and neglect can be the product of a number of issues facing families, including poverty, working multiple jobs to make ends meet, high levels of stress, unrealistic expectations of children, mental health challenges, or substance abuse.”
“DSS is an advocate and fail-safe for the more than 2.2 million children and their families in our state,” said Starnes. “This vital service is provided by dedicated and hard-working staff in all 100-counties across North Carolina.”
DSS staff investigates and assesses all suspected cases of child abuse and neglect; diagnoses the problem with the family; provides in-home services to help keep families together; coordinates community and agency services; or, petitions the court for removal of the child from the home, if necessary.
Nearly 70-percent of the abuse and neglect cases were reported by educational personnel, medical personnel, law courts, and human services. Approximately 30-percent were referred by relatives, non-relatives, parents, or care providers. Child victims reported fewer than one-percent of the cases.
“There are different reasons for and levels of abuse and neglect,” said Starnes. “The hopeful news is that families have support. Parents can learn about their children’s needs and learn new, better ways to react. Parents can change their behavior, and even if they’ve had problems or challenges in the past, the majority can provide a safe, loving, and permanent home for their child.”
child-abuse-in-north-carolinaFollowing the investigation of reported cases in 2017-18, around 45-percent of the findings indicated that services were needed, recommended, or have been provided. Services were not recommended for 40-percent of the cases, and about 16-percent were determined to be unsubstantiated.
“Depending on the specific needs of children and families,” said Starnes, “Children’s Home Society and other organizations partner with DSS and provide a variety of options including intensive family preservation services (support and education in the home), family education programs, foster care, and adoption services.”
Demographically, the male-female ratio of investigated cases was virtually even at 51 to 49-percent. Almost 40-percent of the cases were ages 0 to 5, with 39-percent ages 6 to 12. Roughly 20-percent of the children were ages 13-17.
“Most of our abuse and neglect cases require intensive family preservation services,” said Starnes. “Teaming with DSS, our specialists work with the child and family daily, providing the education and resources they need to understand and overcome their problems and develop healthier family relationships.”
“The success rate of the intensive family preservation program is remarkable,” said Starnes. “Over 95-percent of the families completed the program. Six months following completion, 98-percent of the children are still in the home in a situation deemed safe by DSS.”
According to Starnes, abuse and neglect impacts rural and urban areas, crosses all socio-economic lines and includes every race.
Approximately 51-percent of the investigated cases of abuse and neglect last year were Caucasian. African-Americans made up the second largest segment with about 36-percent, followed by Hispanic at around 11-percent. All other races combined, including American Indian and Alaskan, were roughly 13-percent of the investigated cases.
“Partnerships with the staff of DSS are critical to achieve success for the child. One organization could not do the work alone,” said Starnes. “We all want children to be in safe, loving, and permanent families, and we’re working together to do what we can to help make that happen.”
Children’s Home Society of North Carolina helps support more than 20,000 children and families annually through a diverse array of services including adoption, foster care, parenting education, teen pregnancy prevention, and family preservation programs.

0

From identifying whether your windows Mississauga need weather-stripping, to hiring the right contractor to carry out the project, weather-stripping your windows is not something you can wake up today and decide to do. It needs careful planning if you need the best results. Many stages are involved in installing weather-stripping in your windows. First, you need to identify which windows need to be weather-stripped or you are installing weather-stripping in windows in the entire house. You also need to choose the best weather-stripping material that suits your windows. Don’t forget also you have to choose an expert who will do the work for you. The entire process can be daunting and time-consuming.

However, if you consider these expert tips before starting your project, you will find the entire windows Mississauga project less daunting. Here are these tips that will make you feel happy about your window weather-stripping project. Take a look.

  • How to Weather-strip Doors.

You can purchase weather-stripping kits from your local hardware store. This kit comes with everything that you will need to accomplish this task. weather-stripping is a common home improvement practice, so you are likely to find various styles in stock, like vinyl, metal and wood.

  • Measure the Weather-stripping Correctly.

The kit comes with two long pieces that you use to measure the side jambs and another one short piece that is used to measure the top jamb. So, start by measuring the jamb.

Make sure your measurements are precise as possible for effective weather-stripping. Next, cut the weather-stripping either using a fine-toothed saw or a hacksaw to the right measurements you had taken previously.

  1. Applying the Weather-strip.

Secure the weather-strip pieces in place using nails. This ensures that the foam that spills off is not wasted but adheres to the flange of the weather-strip to create a seal against the frame. However, do not hammer the nails completely into the material but hold on some part outside.

  • Ensure Everything Fits into Its Place.

You are nearly done completing your windows and doors Mississauga weather-stripping process. This is the last stage where you should test whether your door is opening correctly. If it is sticking, you need to adjust the weather-stripping to make sure there is enough space for the door to open well.

After adjustments and the door can open well, hammer the nails completely to hold the weather-stripping in place. Remember that weather-stripping is meant to make your home energy efficient, and therefore, you should ensure everything fits snuggly.

  • Weather-stripping Windows Mississauga.

The first thing you have to do is decide on the windows Mississauga that you need to weather-strip.

  • Wash Your Windows.

Before you start to weather-strip your windows, first wash them and allow some time for them to dry. Take the window measurements and cut the weather-stripping depending on the measurements.

  • Apply Weather-stripping.

The kits used for weather-stripping the windows Mississauga come with adhesive so what you need to do is to peel it off and apply the weather-stripping against your window sash.

Get two pieces of v-channel and cut them to one-inch longer compared to the sash. Now apply the v-channel between the jamb and then the sash. Press it gently to drive it in to make sure it holds firmly. Now, hammer nails into your newly applied weather-stripping and to the jamb and test whether the sash is coming into contact with the nails. It should touch the nails.

  • Windows and Doors Replacement.

The main reason why you could be paying higher monthly energy utility bills is that your home isn’t energy efficient. If you still have older windows and doors Mississauga, they could be allowing cold, and the heat gets into your rooms and makes your entire home uncomfortable to live. This can even result to mold growth, which is detrimental to your health and that of your family members.

The sure-fire way to eliminate drafts and make your home energy efficient is replacing your old windows and doors with the new ones.

UPM Raflatac, a manufacturer of pressure sensitive label materials, just announced that its factory in Mills River is now the first major manufacturing facility in North Carolina whose electrical supply is generated entirely by renewable sources.

This year, the Mills River factory opted to increase its renewable electricity use from 4 percent to 100 percent. Renewable electricity is generated from sources like wind, solar and hydropower. NC DOT Announces Plans To Start Building Toll Lanes on I-485 This Summer

0

The NC Department of Transportation and NC Turnpike Authority just announced plans to start construction on Charlotte’s third major toll lane project on I-485 this summer.

The plan calls for adding 17 miles of toll lanes in both directions of I-485 between I-77 and U.S. 74. The state would also add another general purpose lane in each direction between Rea and Providence roads.

17-mile-long-toll-lane-on-485

The plan would differ from the toll lanes now being built on I-77 in that they would be built by the state, instead of by a private company (Cintra), so they would not need to make a profit – theoretically, this should make the toll lanes less expensive to travel on.

According to the NCDOT:

“The proposed project will add one express lane in each direction on I-485 between I-77 and U.S. 74 (Independence Boulevard). The proposed improvements will provide travel time reliability and improve traffic flows on this critical transportation corridor. This project will serve as part of a larger network of express lanes to offer drivers a new traffic choice – pay a fee and ride in the express lanes to avoid traffic delays or continue driving in the general purpose lanes for free.”

The total cost of the project is expected to be $289.5 million, they hope to open the toll lanes in late 2020.

This will become the 3rd major toll-road project around the Charlotte region, including the I-77 toll lanes and The Monroe Expressway.

You can find out more about the project and leave comments at publicinput.com/I-485-Charlotte.

Franklin Graham Holding Rally in Charlotte On His New “Decision America Tar Heel State Tour”

0

Franklin Graham has just announced a new 8-stop tour of North Carolina, during which he will attempt to fill some of the biggest venues in our state over the course of 2 weeks.

The “Decision America Tar Heel State Tour” will feature music by Jeremy Camp and Dennis Agajanian, and preaching by Franklin Graham.

According to his website, “From October 1–13, Franklin Graham will embark on an eight-city tour of his home state, North Carolina. One-night prayer and evangelism events are scheduled to take place in Fayetteville, Greenville, Wilmington, Raleigh, Greensboro, Hickory, Charlotte and Asheville.”

Graham recently finished a much wider 6-state ‘Decision America Tour’ on May 30th in Syracuse.

The evangelist insists the tours are not political, but his speeches are often riddled with overtly political statements.

During his speech in Syracuse, Graham spent several minutes calling on Trump’s critics to “move on” from the inquiries into President Trump’s behavior (including the Mueller report).

“I don’t know of any president who has been attacked as much,” Graham said, adding that he thinks that “Congress needs to be focused on solving problems.”

That statement brought a cheer from the audience.

Later in his speech, Graham spoke at length about his recent verbal feud with Pete Buttigieg, the openly gay Democratic Presidential Nominee.

He repeated what he has said several times over the past few weeks — that homosexuality is a sin and Buttigieg needs to “repent his sin, not flaunt it.”

Study Reveals Which Day Of The Week You Should Buy Gas

0

charlotte-gas-shortageIf you normally wait until you’re in South Carolina before you fill up, this article is for you!

The price tracking website and app company ‘GasBuddy’ recently released the results from their 3 year study of fuel price data showing which days of the week you should buy gas, and which days you should avoid.

According to the company, Mondays have consistently proven to be the cheapest, and Thursdays are usually the most expensive.

best-day-to-buy-gas-gas-buddy-copy

“The rise in average prices towards the weekend could be to blame on an influential report from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) issued weekly on Wednesdays, which could push prices higher the day after, depending on if data in its report is as expected or a surprise,” said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst at GasBuddy. “Since commodities trading isn’t active over the weekend, it typically allows stations to ‘let it ride’ over the weekend, culminating in lower prices by the start of the work week.”

The company does note that the best day changes year-to-year and state-to-state, but if you were to switch from shopping on Thursdays to Mondays, you could end up saving an average of $325 every year.

NC’s Outer Banks Ranked As One Of America’s Most Desired New Nudist Beaches

0

North Carolina’s Outer Banks have just been ranked as one of the most ideal places in North America to go skinny dipping, according to the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR).

The organization conducted a national survey of its members asking where they thought nude beaches should be officially designated.

The Outer Banks was ranked #2 on the survey, just behind Florida’s Panama City Beach, and just ahead of Oahu’s North Shore beach.

Their press release also points out that “across the U.S. public officials are slowly realizing the benefits to tourism from nude beaches and are now starting to create official nude beaches such as Gunnison Beach in New Jersey (National Park Service), Haulover Beach in Florida (Miami-Dade County), and Rooster Rock in Oregon.”

What are your thoughts about a nude beach on the Outer Banks?
