Papi Queso and JJ Red Hots Will Be Featured On Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives Next Week

food-truck-diners-drive-ins-divesIn a little over a week, one of Charlotte’s favorite food truck and one of our best hot dog restaurants will both be featured on The Food Network.

We reported on the filming of Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives when they were spotted at Charlotte’s Papi Queso and JJ Red Hots this past December, and in just over a week, that episode will be aired.

According to the Food Network’s website, next Friday’s episode will feature, “a funky food truck dishing out grilled cheese with all kinds of culinary twists. Plus, another Charlotte stop at a hot dog joint making sausage from scratch and a classic chili cheese Coney.”

JJ Red Hots and Papi Queso were selected after a large number of fans wrote the show to nominate them.

The popular show, which highlights local restaurant favorites around the country, has already been to Charlotte numerous other times, including stops at; BarBQ King on Wilkinson Boulevard, Cabo Fish Taco in NoDa, Dish in Plaza-Midwood, Jake’s Good Eats on Albemarle Road, Landmark Diner on Central Avenue, Dilworth’s 300 East, and South 21 Drive-in on Independence Boulevard.

No wonder Charlotte was just ranked as the #9 food city in America by Zagat Restaurant.

Cam Newton was just spotted in Los Angeles filming a new 2017 Super Bowl commercial with 33-year-old supermodel Miranda Kerr for Buick.

The duo spent several hours earlier this month at the Los Angeles Zoo filming the ad. Miranda rocked an electric blue off-the-shoulder pencil dress and Cam suited up in an all-blue ‘Sharks’ uniform.

The KKK is Now Actively Recruiting In The Charlotte Area

The KKK is now ramping up their recruiting efforts around the Charlotte region with a new flyer campaign.

A new flyer that reads, “The KKK Wants You!” is put in plastic bags with rocks, then dropped at the doorsteps of homes. The flyers include a phone number to the hate group and racist literature on the back.

A few months ago, the klan tried to organize a “victory parade” to celebrate Donald Trump’s victory, but their permits were denied by the state.

The new fliers aren’t unique to the Charlotte region. Similar ones have been reported in Fayetteville and Greensboro, as well as in Maine, New York and Canada over the past few months.

In order to increase distribution, they have posted images of the flyers on their website, where they tell people to:

“Download and Pass them out all around the World…… White Pride World Wide!!!”

According to the KKK’s website, their “goal is to help restore America to a White Christian nation…This does not mean that we want to see anything bad happen to the darker races…we simply want to live separate from them… It is a simple fact that whenever these races try to integrate themselves into White society, that society is damaged immensely…perhaps even destroyed altogether. Everything that we do as Klan members is in furtherance of our ultimate goal. We are not evil; hateful people as our enemies would have you believe. We are common white people from all walks of life who have recognized the problems that our race is facing. We have chose to stand and fight for those things that we hold dear to our people.”

The Common Market Just Announced It’s Third Charlotte Location

The wildly popular Common Market has just announced it will be opening yet another location, in addition to their new South End location on West Tremont Ave.

It will be located at 4420 Monroe Rd, near the intersection of Monroe and Commonwealth:

They are calling their new store “Common Market Oakwold” – a mashing together of the two neighborhoods it will straddle, Oakhurst and Cotswold.

According to their press release, the new location will include a deli, cafe, beer and wine selection, as well as various other whimsical nik-naks. It will feature 6,500 square feet of interior space with an expanded kitchen and a full U-shaped bar.

The new location will also have a 1,300 square-foot covered patio, complete with a full-sized garage door, that will pretty much make the entire interior outside space on nice days.

The owners of the Common Market will be holding a neighborhood meeting in “Oakwold” to hear from neighbors about what they would like to see at the new location. The meeting will be held at Clayworks, starting at 5 p.m. on February 6.

The new location is now scheduled to open sometime in the Spring of this year.

Looks like Charlotte will now be putting in a bid for a Major League Soccer team even without the city on board.

Last week, the county voted to approve the $175-million stadium deal, but the city then voted it down, saying that it needed more time to consider.

In spite of the city council member’s recent vote, Marcus Smith just tweeted this out, confirming that he will be moving forward with Mecklenburg County and his team of investors:

If the MLS selects Charlotte to host the new team, Smith and his investors will be paying the $150 million entry fee for a team and $87.5 million toward the new stadium (using a $75 million loan from the county).

The new 20,000-seat stadium would be built on the county-owned property that’s now occupied by Memorial Stadium and the Grady Cole Center. The county would continue to own the 16-acre site as well as the new MLS stadium.

Missionaries From Concord, Now Living In Iraq, Have Strong Message About Trump’s Refugee Ban

Neil & Lindsey Broere, along with their 3 children, have risked their lives to move to Iraq and help love and care for refugees and hurting Iraqi citizens.

Now that the Trump Administration’s has placed a temporary ban on all refugees from around the world, and a ban on immigrants from specific middle eastern countries (one of which being Iraq, where the Broeres currently live), many Christians have taken to Facebook to voice their opposition toward the president’s actions.

The Broeres just released this powerful video, from the heart of Iraq, with their thoughts on the ban:

The refugee ban in particular has been causing some major issues for charity agencies here in Charlotte.

6 People Were Arrested At Charlotte Douglas Airport Protests

Due to President Trump’s recent ban on immigrants, refugees, and green-card holders from some Muslim-controlled countries in the middle east, some people have decided to gather at international airports around the country to protest – including at the Charlotte Douglas Airport.

On Saturday night, protesters gathered inside the terminal at the airport to speak out against the ban, but they had not received official permission.

CMPD ended up making 6 arrests and the airport released the following statement:

According to the “Charlotte Airport Protest #NoBanNoWall” facebook group, the protestors were finally able to gain all the neccissary permits to protest outside the airport starting yesterday afternoon.

According to a pinned post in the group:

WE ARE ON. We have approval from CMPD to organize a group of any size at the corner of Josh Birmingham Parkway and Wilkinson Blvd. I have been advised that there is likely to be a CMPD presence, but they are there to monitor the situation only and so long as the demonstration remains peaceful, demonstrators do not block traffic or enter the roadway, the demonstration will not be impeded in any way by the police. We do not need a permit to be at this location, per the Chief of Police.

With Federal Loans Cut Charlotte School Of Law Launches Food Drive To Feed Students

charlotte_school_of_lawLast month we reported on the Federal Government’s decision to cut all student loans from students at the Charlotte School of Law (CSL), due to the fact that the school continued to misrepresent the extent of its problems, including the state’s lowest passing rate on the most recent bar examination.

Due to the loans being stopped, it’s now estimated that at least half of this year’s students have already left the school, with many of the rest now struggling to meet their most basic needs.

Now one of their professors is taking matters into his own hands by organizing a food drive.

Scott Sigman, director of clinical programs at the Charlotte School of Law, just sent out an email to inform students of the school’s new stockpiled of food in the student commons.

He rallied together other faculty members to bring in food to the school and to set up a free “food market” in the middle of the student commons. It even includes a “wish list” for students to write down if there is anything they need, but can’t find in the new free pantry.

Growing Petition Is Asking Panther Management To Bring Steve Smith Back One Last Time

bring-steve-smith-backEarlier this month, during the Panther’s press conference, GM Dave Gettleman gave some rather awkward responses when asked if Steve Smith should retire as a Panther.

His initial response to the reporter’s question was, “That is way above my paygrade.”

He took a drink of water and a quickly said, “Next.”

The reporter spoke-up again saying, “but you’re in charge of contracts…”

Gettleman again repeated, “That is way above my paygrade.”

Back in 2014, Smith had some rather harsh words for the Panther’s management when the failed to resign him. He told a reporter than he had been “stabbed in the back”, and that Gettleman told him that he was a “shadow” of his former self and that Smith was “jealous” of Cam Newton.

In spite of how things ended, and in spite of Smith already having submitted his retirement letter to the NFL, many fans still have hope he will retire as a Panther – even if he’s only brought back for one final game. He remains the greatest receiver the Panther’s have ever had, and still holds most of our records, including the most touchdowns (67), receptions (836), and receiving yards (12,197).

A Change.org petition has now been started, asking Dave Gettleman and the Panther’s management to bring back Smitty one last time. The petition has already received over 1235 signatures since last month.

Chick-Fil-A is about to open 2 new stores in the Charlotte region, and in keeping with their new store opening tradition, they will be giving out coupons for 52 free meals for the first 100 customers at each new location.

When I first moved to Charlotte about 10 years ago, I went to the grand opening of the University City Chick-Fil-A and ended up scoring 52 free #1s by being of the first 100 customers (after camping out in the walmart parking lot for almost 24 hours).

According to their website, “We celebrate each grand opening with the new communities we are joining. It’s all part of the signature First 100® event: a tradition that dates back to 2003 with an overnight parking lot campout that begins the day before the restaurant opening and, come daylight, rewards the first 100 customers with the ultimate prize of free Chick-fil-A meals for a year.”

The pre-grand-opening festivities will often include music, games, and dancing:

Their newest Charlotte area location will be opening on Feb. 2nd in Lenoir’s Smith Crossroads at 116 Wilkesboro Blvd., and their second will open on Feb. 9th in South Charlotte at 11530 Waverly Center Dr.

These two new stores will bring the grand total of Chick-Fil-A restaurants in North Carolina up to 151.
