Charlotte Ranked as One of the Best Cities for Renters in 2026

Charlotte is making a strong case for renters in 2026. According to RentCafe‘s Best Cities for Renters 2026 report, the city ranks #17 in the nation out of 150 U.S. cities, landing in the top 20 for both housing and cost of living and local economy.

Our report evaluates 150 U.S. cities across 20 metrics grouped into three categories: cost of living and housing; local economy; and quality of life.

Here’s what the data shows about Charlotte:

#17 for Housing & Cost of Living:  

• Charlotte‘s rental market is delivering on both quality and value. The city ranks 7th in the nation for high-end apartment availability, with 74.3% of its rental stock classified as high-end — the highest share in North Carolina. 

• It also has the 10th biggest stock of new apartments in the country, with 28.3% of units built in the last five years, giving renters access to modern inventory. Plus, the average apartment clocks in at 954 square feet.

#19 for Local Economy: 

•  Charlotte’s economy isn’t just strong — it’s working for renters. The city ranks 15th nationally for job growth and 14th for business formation, with 262 new business applications per 10,000 residents. 

• Renter household incomes have grown 35.3% over the past five years, and 32.4% of residents hold higher education degrees, reflecting a workforce that supports continued economic momentum.

#75 for Quality of Life: 

• Charlotte ranks in the middle for quality of life. About 23.5% of its apartments are in top locations, close to green spaces and public transit, and the city ranks 55th for school quality. 

• On the flip side, commutes are a known challenge here — 33% of residents drive alone for more than 30 minutes (ranked 102nd nationally), and only 3.5% use public transport or walk to work.

The bigger picture Charlotte is one of five North Carolina cities to make the national top 50 this year, alongside Wilmington (#4), Raleigh (#6), Durham (#16), and Asheville (#20).
