Charlotte apartments now average 925 square feet — that average has dropped by 40 square feet over the past decade, according to the latest RentCafe.com Apartment Size Report.
Here’s how each unit type changed in Charlotte‘s new apartments:
- One-bedrooms now make up 54% of new supply, up from 46% a decade ago — and those units have also gotten smaller, shrinking by 33 square feet to an average of 740 square feet.
- Studios lost the most space of any unit type, shrinking 70 square feet to average just 495 square feet.
- Two-bedroom apartments bucked the trend, gaining 13 square feet to average 1,135 square feet — and the number of two-bedrooms built nearly tripled compared to the previous decade.
- Three-bedroom apartments gained the most — up 93 square feet to an average of 1,438 square feet — but renters looking for that kind of space will have a harder time finding it, as they make up just 6% of new supply, down from 8% a decade ago.
What the data shows overall: new apartments skew toward one-bedrooms, and those one-bedrooms are smaller than they used to be. More supply, but fewer of the larger layouts that families and roommates are often looking for.
