SC Set To End Daylight Savings Time Change With Approval From Federal Government

South Carolina may have just fallen back for the last time.

The SC Senate has just approved a new bill that would effectively end the Daylight Savings Time time change if approved by the federal government. They join Florida, Arkansas, Tennessee, Oregon, Delaware, Utah, Maine and Washington in the move to request the Feds to allow the change (Hawaii and Arizona don’t observe the change in spite of the Federal law to observe it).

Sen. Harvey Peeler of Gaffney introduced Senate Bill 11 and it passed unanimously in the SC Senate.

The bill states:

“TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 1-1-30 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY INTENDS FOR DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME TO BE THE YEAR-ROUND STANDARD TIME OF THE ENTIRE STATE SHOULD THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS AMEND CERTAIN RELATED FEDERAL LAW TO ALLOW STATES TO OBSERVE DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME YEAR ROUND.”

The bill is now set to be debated in the House when it returns this coming January.

Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen of Charlotte, NC is making Thanksgiving dinner easier for everyone. They have a new menu for the holiday for sides, desserts and sauces available for pre-order with pick up the week of Thanksgiving. 

“I love Thanksgiving! It’s my favorite holiday to cook and have my family all together,” said chef Alyssa Wilen, owner and executive chef of Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen. “And now that I have a newborn at home, time to cook is even more difficult especially with family coming to town. I will definitely be getting our own side dishes to help with my dinner!” said Wilen. 

The Thanksgiving Sides pre-order menu is available on the Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen website. They are accepting orders online, with no minimums, until Friday November 22nd. Guests may choose their pick up time, located at their lower South End kitchen space. Tuesday November 26th between 10 am and 8 pm; Wednesday November 27th between 10 am and 5 pm. 

“Whether you’re the host or a guest, the week can get very busy, quickly,” added Wilen. “However even with all that, I still want the best on my table to serve. We’ll have everything needed minus the turkey for you to impress.”

UNC Charlotte will officially open its new Veterans Park this coming Monday, Nov. 11, at 1pm.

The park was conceived by Christopher Orr ’18 as a place on campus to recognize UNC Charlotte’s historical connections to veteran students and to honor all past, present and future veterans who will attend or work at the University. The celebration will be hosted by the UNC Charlotte Veteran Services Office.

“By establishing Veterans Park here at UNC Charlotte, we are continuing in the recognition of our campus’ dedication to aid in educating returning service members. As we did following World War II, we continue to value and celebrate the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform,” said Bill Wilson, director of the Veteran Services Offices.

The University broke ground on the park in May, and construction began during the summer. Veterans Park is adjacent to Memorial Hall, near the corner of Cameron Boulevard and University Road. Memorial Hall houses the University’s Army and Air Force ROTC programs.

The University has a rich history of serving veterans and is one of several educational institutions founded in American cities following World War II. These schools met new demands for higher education and provided unprecedented opportunities fueled by the GI Bill, which gave thousands of returning veterans historic access to higher education.

Yesterday afternoon, over 1,200 people (mostly students) descended on Uptown Charlotte for our city’s second ‘Youth Climate Strike’.

Last month the first rally was led by Charlotte’s 14-year-old Mary Ellis Stevens, along with about 500 students from around Charlotte;

For Charlotte’s second rally, Stevens contacted world-renown 16-year-old activist Greta Thunberg from Sweden, who agreed to come to Charlotte to speak.

The resulting rally drew over 1,200 people to Uptown Charlotte’s government center between 12pm-2pm on a cold Friday afternoon;

Yesterday’s rally caused such a stir on social media that many national news outlets began reporting on it.

Yahoo news reported on Greta’s speech during the rally, and specifically, how she shut down a heckler from the crowd while she was talking.

ABC News noted that the Climate Strike marches have now been organizing around the world for over a year and there are no plans on stopping them until “adults start believing in the science of climate change”.

They quoted Greta from the Charlotte stage in saying; “the people in power have not yet done that, they continue to ignore us and to ignore the current best available science, so we have no choice but to go on for as long as it takes.”

Even the world’s Episcopal News Service reported on how the entire student body of Charlotte’s Trinity Episcopal School was dismissed for the day so they could attend the rally.

WWE has had to take away the titles from many superstars due to injury and that is maybe why they are avoiding giving the title to a wrestler suffering from bad knees.
