Duke Announces Plans To Move Headquarters To New 40-Story Tower in Uptown Charlotte

0

The Carolinas’ largest energy producer has just announced plans to move their entire corporate headquarters to the new 40-story ‘Metro Tower’ (currently under construction), and will rename it the ‘Duke Energy Plaza’.

In a press release, the company said they made the decision in order to downsize their corporate office space. Their current headquarters is located in Charlotte’s second tallest building, often referred to as ‘the handle bar building’ or ‘the tower of power’, which lies directly across the street from the soon-to-be Duke Energy Plaza.

The move will reduce Duke’s overall office space usage from roughly 2 million square feet down to about 1.5 million square feet.

“We’re excited to transition our employees into the Duke Energy Plaza, where we will drive additional collaboration and innovation to deliver the affordable, reliable and increasingly clean energy our customers expect and achieve our goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050,” said Donna Council, Duke Energy’s senior vice president of administrative services and real estate. “We’re moving to a new workplace model that provides teammates with more flexibility and hybrid work options, reducing the need for the large real estate footprint we currently occupy. We remain firmly committed to Uptown Charlotte with an office tower that we’ll be proud to call our new home.”

Former President Trump Coming To NC Next Month To Headline NCGOP Convention

0

The NCGOP has just confirmed that former President Donald Trump will be coming to North Carolina next month to headline the state’s Republican Part Convention.

He will be speaking on June 5th at the main convention dinner in Greenville, NC.

According to the NCGOP, the convention will be closed to the public and all media personnel. The speech will not be live streamed nor will it be viewable on any online channels.

Some have speculated that Trump might run against Biden again in 2024 in what would certainly be a highly contentious political rematch.

Trump narrowly beat Biden in North Carolina during the 2020 race, earning 50.1% of Tar Heel votes, but lost to Biden in the national popular vote and the national electoral college vote.

New Watch Companies Are Pushing Limits of Fashion and Design

0

High fashion watches are experiencing someone of a renaissance at this point in time, with new companies starting to really push the limits of a time piece’s function and look.

One such company out of Copenhagen is doing just that. Their name is Nordgreen and their products are truly awe-inspiring.

The company started just under 4 years ago in 2017. Partners Pascar Sivam and Vasilij Brandt wanted to build a brand that was primarily focused on sustainable practices while creating an aesthetically pleasing, and functional collection of designer timepieces. They first envisioned their collection with award-winning Chief Designer Jakob Wagner, who earned his acclaim by designing for Bang & Olufsen, Hay, B&B Italia, and Cappellini for starters.

The watch I decided to get is called ‘The Native’, which they describe as “striking the perfect balance between striking sophistication and subtle detailing,” adding, “balance is the key to the high quality of life in Copenhagen, and that is exactly what Jakob Wagner instilled into this watch.”

You can check out their entire collection on their website here.

Charlotte Is Now The First City in The Carolinas To Use Facial Recognition Software

0

The Charlotte Douglas Airport has just officially started using facial recognition cameras on passengers who travel through the airport.

According to a press release we received from the Department of Homeland Security, the new system is initially being rolled out by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) within the international flights area to verify that passengers arriving in Charlotte are who they say they are. It takes only seconds to scan the facial biometrics of passengers and ‘is more than 98 percent accurate.

“CBP is expanding the use of facial biometrics at Charlotte Douglas International Airport to provide travelers a safe, touchless international arrival process that further secures and modernizes air travel,” said Barry Chastain, CBP Area Port Director Charlotte. “Our valuable partnership with CLT continues to enhance the travel experience. In addition, CBP looks forward to partnering with stakeholders at other international ports of entry across N.C. to implement Simplified Arrival.”

Charlotte now joins Miami, NYC, Atlanta, Washington DC, Chicago, and Dallas-Fort Worth in adding the new technology.

We’re now the first city in the Carolinas to use facial recognition cameras.

Important Safety Laws for Cyclists On the Road

0

There are many North Carolina Bike Laws that will help keep cyclists and motorists safe on the road. Years ago, a new bill to make cycling safer throughout the state came into action after increased pressure on the state legislature to make changes. On NC streets and highways, an average of 19 cyclists die and more than 600 are injured each year. The new bills put in place have included higher fines, stiffer penalties and a greater chance to lose your licence for violating the rules put in place to protect cyclists.

Thankfully, new laws give cyclists more freedom and safety on the road so that we can get more cars off the streets and have people living healthier lifestyles. Since there have been changes, there are some important laws for motorists and cyclists to remember. Here are some of the road related laws to review that apply to both vehicles sharing the road.

Night Equipment Is Required

If you’re biking somewhere at night, you’re required to have proper lighting equipment on your vehicle. Your bike should have a lamp with a reflex mirror on the rear and you must have certain lighting operating at night on public streets, greenways or places where cars can be, such as parking lots. You should also be wearing bright clothing, preferably a vest that is reflective and visible. All lighting and clothing should be able to be visible by at least 300 feet.

Slower Traffic Uses the Right Lane

It’s a well-known rule that if you’re driving slowly you drive in the right lane, so cyclists should stick to the right, knowing they will be slower than cars. There are some roads that now have fully marked lanes for them to ride in and they are entitled to use them. If drivers find themselves close and need to pass, they may do so only when it’s absolutely clear from any oncoming traffic in the opposing lane. Drivers need to remember that cyclists are entitled to use the full lane too, and that it’s possible to share the road safely.

Impaired Driving Law Applicable to Bicyclists

It might seem like a bike ride home after a party can be safe, but it’s really not a good idea. The dangerous things that can happen to an imparied driver can also happen with an impaired cyclist. If you’re caught biking impaired, you can be tested and if you have an alcohol concentration of 0.08 or more you can be charged.

These rules have been updated to help keep cyclists and motorists safe on the road, but accidents happen every day. If you ever find you or someone you love needs help in a cycle related accident, Attorney Ann Groninger is an expert in her field. She has a specialized understanding of the updated laws and legal frameworks of biking safety.

With the rising importance of road safety, everyone who uses the road should do their part to make it as safe as possible. Sharing the road is a great way to work together to help make our planet cleaner and greener. Many more people may take up cycling as part of their lifestyle if towns, cities and states work to make safer and friendlier environments for bikes and cars to coexist harmoniously.

Common Pests That Live with You in the House

0

You clean your house regularly to keep it free of dust, dirt, and grime. Still, some areas need more attention, such as the kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, and furniture. They attract pests, which carry harmful bacteria and germs on their bodies and can infect humans. From allergies to asthma to nausea, these problems can affect your health in many ways. At the same time, your property cannot be safe in their presence. That’s why it is necessary to understand what types of insects and crawlers inhabit your home and how to get rid of them for a peaceful living.

Ants

These home invaders hunt your home for food, water, and shelter. It doesn’t require any guessing where they would want to live. Of course, it has to be your bathroom and kitchen. You can use baits to eliminate them. Still, it is not a safe method if you have pets and kids at home. Make sure to clean your surfaces and wipe them thoroughly to eliminate possible food sources for the ants. If these methods do not work, contact a professional ant removal service to help rid your home of these unwanted guests.

Cockroaches

Big cities face this type of pest problem a lot. But, again, they commonly reside in your kitchen and bathroom. Even if you spot only one, you can be sure there will many more of them sheltering in damp and dark crevices and nooks. If they make it their home, you can struggle to exterminate them. You will need to take comprehensive action to get rid of them. Applying insecticide near the sink, toilet, fridge, and other places can be a good idea. But again, it isn’t as simple as it sounds.

While maintaining thorough cleanliness is crucial to discourage them from lingering in your house, you must not hesitate to call pest control professionals to remove every single trace of their existence. Do you live in Myrtle Beach?  Team Veterans is Mrytle Beach’s pest prevention experts.

Termites

Did you know these insects cause damage worth almost $5 billion in the US a year? These feed on wood. If you spot powder-like dust in and around wood furniture, you can be sure it’s them. You have to eliminate them to save your property.

Mosquitoes

Although these blood-sucking insects appear in the summer season more, you can find them hovering around you throughout the year. For them, humidity and warm weather are the best things. Hence, you can easily find them near water. Mosquito bites can cause malaria, dengue, and other dangerous illnesses. They don’t need bigger space to enter your home as a tiny hole or crack can be enough for them. While installing mesh screens and using repellants are beneficial, you can again take the help of professionals if you cannot prevent them.

Bedbugs

Bedding, mattress, and dark corner are their favorite habitats. These night creatures survive on human blood. So when you sleep, they bite and get their food. The bites can lead to itchiness, redness on the skin, etc. These can also disturb your sleep. Since home remedies can scatter them all over your home, it is better to let professionals handle them.

Do you have any of these or other pest problems? Don’t spend sleepless nights over them when professionals are there to help you.

The Impact of Religion on Literature

0

Whether we are pious or not, at one point or the other in our lives, we will come across religion. Similarly, whether we are interested in book-reading or not, we will have to read a few important works once or twice in our lifetime.

What is really interesting is how we can see prevalent religious themes in the works of literature dating back from 18th-century British literature to modern-day literature. Regardless of your religions & belief, it is difficult to deny that the Bible is pretty interesting and is nice as an introduction to religion and literature.

Featuring war & peace, love & hatred, a story about a man-eating whale & a woman who turns to salt, the Bible is indeed a good story with a touch of romance and an adventure that is very interesting to read.

Thus, it isn’t very hard to imagine that Biblical themes continue to persist throughout the history of literature and the effect of such works is prevalent. Let’s briefly discuss a few very common literary works so that you can see how faith systems have impacted the world of books and shaped the words that we read.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

The novel is set in the 1960s in a mental asylum. It is written from the perspective of a patient – Chief Bromden – who pretends to be deaf & mute. The narrator details the story of McMurphy, who is a Christ-like figure despite his proclivities for womanizing, drinking, and gambling.

He is an unlikely messiah as he brings salvation to other inhabitants of the asylum. With his exuberant nature, he keeps the patients from falling prey to the rigid behavioral habits instilled by society and the head nurse.

The head nurse is depicted as a devil incarnate while McMurphy is the Christ-like savior. As an allegory for the death of Christ, McMurphy sacrifices himself to save the rest of the patients in the ward.

Good Omens

In the Bible and other pious books, there is always a villain who is leading mankind astray. Putting an alternative spin on this story and idea, Good Omens tells a story about good and bad coming together to stop Apocalypse.

Crowley – the demon – and Aziraphale – the angle – are the representatives of Hell & Heaven on Earth. They join forces and prevent the Antichrist from destroying the world as we know it. However, doing this is more difficult than any of them anticipated.

The novel utilizes humor to convey messages & ideas about the nature of the creation of mankind. We learn a lot about the biblical idea of the Apocalypse and the catalysts as well as the consequences of the world ending.

Slaughterhouse-Five

Even though Vonnegut identified as a secular humanist, we see various Christian themes in his novels and particularly this novel. The story is about Billy Pilgrim – a young soldier who has been drafted to serve in World War II. His last name is a reference to the pilgrimages that people take for pious purposes.

It is a subtle hint and reflection of the journey that Billy goes on in the novel. Despite his pious name and the fact that he came from a very pious family – he grew up with a crucifix hanging from his wall – Billy wasn’t a pious person himself.

In the book by Vonnegut, we learn that he serves as the assistant of a chaplain, and he is captured as a prisoner of war and he witnesses the Dresden bombing. When he comes back from the war, he experiences severe PTSD.

He starts to live one moment to the next and travels everywhere without any prior plan. He prophesied his death and life, which is a hint towards Christ’s prophecy about his death.

Preacher Series

An Irish vampire, a gun-toting criminal, and a priest walk into a bar. This does sound like the beginning of a badly written joke. However, this is something that you will find within the pages of the preacher series.

This acclaimed graphic novel series follows the story of Jesse Custer, a preacher from a small town, who is imbued with supernatural powers that give him the ability to command anyone with a simple word.

Throughout these graphic novels, religion is depicted in dark, violent terms. Chaos reigns everywhere and God is nowhere to find. The preacher – Jesse Custer – is hunting him down so that he can make him pay for his shortcomings.

The authors use characters such as Custer to point out the shortcomings and flaws of the pious teachings. Even though Custer has a desire to point out the flaws of religion, he doesn’t reject the idea of God outright – a dilemma which many of us face even today. Similar to Edgar Allan Poe’s book and as is illustrated in the Tell-Tale Heart essay, the human heart knows what the truth is and no matter how many lies try to obscure the reality, it will have a voice louder than the rest.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Surprised to see this book on the list? Don’t be – even though the series received a backlash from the devout Christians for promoting occult and witchcraft, Rowling claims that the series was partially inspired by Christianity.

The seventh and last book in the series starts with two epigraphs drawn from the Quaker Christian tradition. Several biblical quotes appear throughout the novel – especially on the tombstone of Professor Dumbledore and Harry’s parents.

Apart from these subtle pious references, the themes of death and resurrection that are woven in the final chapter, are indeed Christian in nature. Similar to Christ, Harry sacrifices himself to save the rest of the people and then is resurrected.
