At ARN’s annual convention in Dallas, a relatively new bar in the Charlotte Douglas International Airport took 1st place for USA Today’s “Best Airport Bar in America” award. Whisky River’s second airport location (the first is in Charlotte’s Epicenter) took the top prize not long after it celebrated its one-year anniversary.

USA Today joined forces with Airport Restaurant News and 10best.com to ask people all across America what Airport bar they thought was the best. Some speculate that because Whisky River is owned by Dale Earnhard Jr., that his massive fan base was the reason for Whisky River’s victory.

A spokesman for the company even commented, “It’s an online vote, and we were fifth in the voting before they even told us about it, I told Dale about it at 10 a.m., and by noon, we were first. We never really lost the lead from then on.”

Even if the massive JR fan base was the main reason for the win, the bar itself is actually quite impressive for being an airport bar. It features a full-sized model bull and even a stage for live performances. The menu includes favorites like the Carolina Q Burger, chipotle queso and Dale Jr.’s signature barbecue sauce. Cocktails made with Midnight Moon Original Moonshine (from legendary racer and whisky maven Junior Johnson) can also be seen on the menu.

Since winning the award back in March, the bar has continued to impress visitors to our airport and brings a friendly feel to epicenter patrons traveling out of town.

An Ohio teen that visited the White Water Center in Charlotte has just tragically died from a brain-eating amoeba.

According to the CDC’s website, the infectious disease occurs when the amoeba enters the body through the nose, typically during swimming. The CDC states that the amoeba cannot enter the host through drinking contaminated water, or contact with someone else who’s contaminated.

NBC channel 4 in Ohio initially broke the story last night, here is the original video;

The Columbus Dispatch reported the girl’s name as Lauren Seitz. The official cause of her death was Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis, an infection caused by Naegleria Fowleri, a one-celled organism that usually becomes fatal when forced up the nose.

Initial symptoms of PAM start about five days after infection, including fever, nausea, headache or vomiting. After the start of the symptoms, the disease progresses rapidly and generally causes death within about five days.

According to a news conference held this morning by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), Seitz’s only known underwater exposure was believed to be when riding in a raft with several others that overturned at the Whitewater Center in Charlotte.

When Dr. Marcus Plescia with the Health Department was asked if he thought the US National White Water Center is still safe, he replied, “We think the Whitewater Center is as safe as any body of open water.”

At 4:23pm, the US National White Water Center released this official statement, “…The U.S. National Whitewater Center conducts water quality tests every week. Based on these tests and all available information, at all times, the USNWC has been in compliance with all required water quality standards and meets the requirements of all regulatory standards and authorities. The USNWC is working closely with the Centers for Disease Control and the Mecklenburg County Health Department to investigate the matter further.”

Naegleria fowleri infections are extremely rare, according to officials. The CDC noted that less than 10 cases have been reported annually in the United State during the last 53 years.

It is still good to always use precautions. When swimming in warmer areas where this infection has been known to occur, it’s recommended that swimmers:

• Keep their head above water when taking part in warm freshwater-related activities to avoid having any water go up the nose.

• Wear certified nose clips and ear plugs when swimming in warm fresh water.

• Avoid stagnant fresh water during periods of high water temperature and low water levels.

• Avoid digging in, or stirring up, the sediment in warm fresh water areas.

The ‘By Design’ furniture and decorating stores Pineville and Charlotte’s South End are having a massive liquidation sale before they go out of business this coming July.  The furniture store By Design is closing its doors in South End and Pineville.

The company is now in the process of selling off its entire inventory of modern furniture, paintings, lighting, and other home design pieces. They’ve marked every item in both stores at deep discounts.

At this point, it’s still not clear what will replace By Design in the two Charlotte-area locations, but retail demand in the South End area especially has continued to outpace supply. It’s not likely Edens, the current property manager, will have any trouble finding a new tenant.

Lyft (Uber’s main competitor) recently produced one of the most epic commercials ever right here in the Queen City.

One of NASCAR’s favorite drivers, Danica Patrick, just became a Lyft driver to show people how to really drive on the streets of Charlotte – her customer’s reactions are priceless;

Today, Harris Teeter announced it is seeking qualified applicants to fill nearly 650 new positions within its upcoming and existing stores.

They will be hosting a major hiring event on July 21st at the Steele Croft store (13000 S. Tryon St.) to fill a variety of positions, from full-time department heads and assistant store managers to part-time cashiers and department clerks, the grocer commented in a statement.
