Fort Mill About To Build South Carolina’s First Double-Crossover Interchange

Fort Mill is about to have South Carolina’s first and only “double-crossover interchange”, a new type of exchange that implements a ‘double-crossover’ traffic pattern.

It will be installed at the Gold Hill Rd. exit off highway 77 in Fort Mill – the second busiest interchange in the region, with over 33k daily drivers.

The entire project will cost taxpayers roughly $12 million – government officials are hoping that it will drastically reduce congestion and accidents by offering a smoother transition for drivers entering and exiting the highway.

York County and SCDOT officials have been pushing for the double crossover diamond interchange with the anticipation of drastic growth in the area over the next decade. The design is expected to significantly increase car capacity while also reducing congestion at the interchange.

The new interchange has already been built in several other states, including North Carolina in the Raleigh area.

15 Year Old Just Caught A 117 Pound Catfish in Lake Gaston – A New North Carolina State Record

Landon Evans, a 15 year old from Murfreesboro, NC just caught the largest blue catfish in the history of North Carolina, weighing in at a staggering 117 pounds on June 11th, the record was confirmed by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

It is the third time in six months that the record has been broken from the same Lake Gaston in Northern North Carolina.

In December, Zakk Royce, of Murfreesboro, caught a pair of record-setting blue catfish in a 24-hour period, according to the Commission. The first fish, caught on Dec. 20, weighed in at 91 pounds and was 53 inches long. Hours later he caught a 105-pound, 55.75-inch long blue catfish.

To qualify for a N.C. Freshwater Fish State Record, anglers must have caught the fish by rod and reel or cane pole, have the fish weighed on a scale certified by the N.C. Department of Agriculture, witnessed by one observer, have the fish identified by a fisheries biologist from the Commission, and submit an application with a full, side-view photo of the fish.

US Whitewater Center Shuts Down Water Activities After Water Tests Positive For Brain-Eating Amoeba

After the June 19 death of an Ohio teen, who contracted a brain-eating amoeba after visiting the U.S. National Whitewater Center, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Charlotte was contacted for further investigation.

A total of 11 water samples were taken over the past 2 days in various sections of the center – the majority of the samples have now returned positive for Naegleria Fowleri Amoeba.

According to a statement released by the Whitewater Center, all water activities will be closed indefinitely until the source and a solution to the amoeba are found.

The center will still remain open for non-whitewater activities.

Naegleria fowleri appears in many warm, freshwater bodies of water during the summer. But infections caused by the amoeba are very rare, since the amoeba has to be forced up the victims nose for an infection to occur. Less than 10 cases have been reported annually in the United States over the last 53 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Almost all such cases are fatal.

Initial symptoms of PAM start about five days after infection, including fever, nausea, headache or vomiting. After the start of the symptoms, the disease progresses rapidly and generally causes death within about five days.

The CDC recommends that when swimming in warmer areas where this infection has been known to occur, swimmers:

• Keep their head above water when taking part in warm freshwater-related activities to avoid having any water go up the nose.

• Wear certified nose clips and ear plugs when swimming in warm fresh water.

• Avoid stagnant fresh water during periods of high water temperature and low water levels.

• Avoid digging in, or stirring up, the sediment in warm fresh water areas.

Famous Toastery (AKA Toast) Is Moving Into Center City

charlottes famous toasteryThe wildly popular breakfast spot now known as ‘Famous Toastery’ (which was recently named one of the top 6 local chain restaurants in America by CNBC) is about to open their first Uptown Charlotte location at 330 S. Tryon St.

The local breakfast and brunch favorite will be opening in a new spacious 5,000-square-foot space in the heart of our city, and will be designed to primarily feed on-the-go business professionals.

The new location is now about 2 months away from opening, but the owners are hoping they can push that schedule up some.

“This is something we’ve been working on for a really long time. We thought there’s a big lack of what we do uptown, which is weird,” owner Robert Maynard commented in a press release.

Jeremy Lin Turned Down Charlotte Hornets Offer And Will Now Become A Free Agent

jeremy-lin-charlotte-hornetsCharlotte Hornets guard Jeremy Lin has just decided to decline his $2.2 million player option to play a second year with the team, according to ESPN. He will now become a free agent on July 1st.

This past year, Lin averaged 11.7 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3 assists per game in his first season with the Hornets (the third best stats on the team, behind Al Jefferson and Kemba Walker). He signed a two-year, $4.3 million contract with Charlotte last July, but he had the option of an early termination that would allow him to become a free agent.

The move is somewhat of a surprise, as Lin seemed to have every intention of returning to the Hornets at the end of this past season. “If you asked me would I be interested in coming back, there’s no question in my mind, it’s a resounding yes.” Lin commented to reporters.

Once Lin becomes a free agent on July 1st, the Hornets will still have a chance to increase their offer and re-sign the star, although such a move seams very unlikely since they just traded their #22 draft pick for Sacramento guard Marco Belinelli.
