NC Still Getting Rocked By Aftershocks After August’s Historic 5.1 Magnitude Quake

0

The small town of Sparta, North Carolina has now been rocked by over 200 earthquakes since the big one struck 2 months ago in early August.

Over the past 30 days, the region saw a total of 31 additional earthquakes, and just yesterday, a 2.0 magnitude aftershock struck just north of the original epicenter:

According to the USGS, the historic magnitude 5.1 earthquake just struck on August 9th, 2020 at 8:07 AM, located 3 KM southeast of Sparta, NC, and about 80 miles north of Charlotte. The Quake had a depth of 9.2 KM and an epicenter of 36.479°N 81.098°W.

The USGS’s ‘Shake Map’, which pulls data from hundreds of seismographs throughout our region, shows that the earthquake was detected far away as Washington, DC. The quake rippled North Carolina’s fault line so hard, the Charlotte region experienced what felt like a direct magnitude 4 quake.

The USGS’s ‘Did You Feel It’ map shows that people have now reported feeling the quake as far away as Alabama and Pennsylvania:

Earthquakes have been increasing in frequency around the Charlotte region over the past few years. Last year, we saw a 4.4 magnitude quake hit Decatur, TN, and a couple months ago, a 2.6 magnitude quake rocked a small town just north of Charlotte.

According to USGS.gov, “The largest earthquake in the area (magnitude 5.1) occurred in 1916. Moderately damaging earthquakes strike the inland Carolinas every few decades, and smaller earthquakes are felt about once each year or two.”

CMPD Asking For Public’s Help In Identifying Vehicle Responsible For Killing Local 22-Year-Old

0

CMPD officers are asking for the public’s help in finding a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run that resulted in the death of a 22-year-old Charlotte man.

The incident occurred on September 6th at around 3:30am on Independence Blvd. when 22-year-old Cameron Cook was struck by a vehicle on a dimly lit section of the road.

Moments after Cook was hit, another pedestrian quickly called 911. When emergency responders arrived, Cook was pronounced dead on the scene.

Investigators said the vehicle that struck was a red Ford Fusion with black wheels and may have damage to its fog lights or turn signals.

They posted the following video with more details over the weekend:

The Panthers Just Won Their First Game In Atlanta Since 2014

0

The curse is finally broken!

The Carolina Panthers just dominated the Atlanta Falcons in their first Atlanta road game win since the winter of 2014, with a final score of 23-16, even without their star RB Christian McCaffrey.

The win came from 3 main sources – QB Teddy Bridgewater, RB Mike Davis, and our especially hungry defense.

Bridgewater threw for 261 yards in the first half alone (the most first-half passing yards of any quarterback so far this season). He finished the game 27-37 with 313 total passing hards, 2 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions.

Davis plowed through Falcon defenders for most of the game, racking up a career-high of 149 total scrimmage yards (89 rushing yards and 60 receiving yards from 9 catches).

Our defense was the final ingredient in yesterday’s win, holding the Falcons to just 1 score in the first half and stopping them on Carolina’s 5-yard line in the final minutes of the game, setting up a game-clinching interception for safety Juston Burris.

Here are all the highlights from yesterday’s game:

Amazon Currently Hiring Hundreds of New Work-From-Home Employees

0

amazon-building-in-concordOnline retail giant Amazon recently announced plans to hire at least 30,000 new employees over the next 12 months, including at least 5,000 ‘work-from-home’ jobs in their ‘Virtual Customer Service’ department.

This would allow people to work from virtually anywhere with an internet connection, and if you work at least 20 hours, you can be eligible for benefits.

“There are lots of people who want or need a flexible job — whether they’re a military spouse, a college student, or a parent — and we’re happy to empower these talented people no matter where they happen to live,” commented Tom Weiland, Amazon’s vice president for worldwide customer service, in a statement.

This new part-time hiring spree is part of an even larger employment surge by the retailer. Back in January, Amazon announced the addition of 100,000 full-time jobs for 2017-2018 – primarily within fulfillment centers.

Over the last several years Amazon has seen some truly historic employment growth. In 2011, Amazon had just over 56,000 full- and part-time employees – now, at the end of 2016, that number was over 341,000.

Amazon’s incredible growth has had a major impact on the US retail industry, which now accounts for 1 in every 10 workers in the U.S., according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The company currently has over 200 open ‘virtual’ positions available – you can browse them on Amazon’s career site here.

How to Buy a Home When You’re Self-Employed

0

Gearing up to buy a house for the first time is an incredible financial and life-long achievement worth celebrating. Not only are you preparing to make one of the largest investments you’ll possibly ever make, but you’re also catching a shiny glimpse of what your future could look like for the next coming years or even decades.

If you run your own small business from home, or identify as a gig worker or an independent contractor, and want to purchase a house, you may quickly find that it’s more difficult for you to obtain financing than traditional full-time workers.  The reason behind that is that it’s often harder to prove how much money you have as a self-employed worker without a steady paycheck or W-2. That’s precisely why most lenders have tighter guidelines for self-employed borrowers.

Don’t be discouraged— while you may face a few more obstacles in the process, it’s not an impossible dream to own a home. In addition to all of the fun tasks like touring homes and exploring neighborhoods, there are plenty of challenges prospective homebuyers must consider before they can call their dream home their own. In this post, we’ll walk you through how to buy a home when you’re self-employed and provide the insight you need to prepare for the process.

Step 1: Save for a Down Payment

Regardless of whether you’re self-employed or not, the more money you’re able to put down for that first down payment, the easier it’ll be to get approved for a mortgage. Not only will your monthly payments be lower, but you’ll end up spending less altogether over the lifespan of the loan.

However, as a self-employed worker, your investments take on an additional importance – they also stand as evidence of financial security. In the eyes of a lender, financing a self-employed borrower is often considered to be riskier, which is typically why more financial information is required before approval.

In the event that you have a sizable amount of savings to back your application, the lender will view you as far more reliable and may put you on a faster track toward approval.

Step 2: Determine Your Budget

Once you’ve got a clear picture of the sort of funding you’re able to qualify for and the down payment amount you can manage, you can shift your focus to working through how much of a home you can reasonably afford.

Start this process by comparing monthly mortgage repayments over time with your projected monthly income and other outgoing expenses to obtain a clear idea of what your working budgets will look like in the years to come. Doing this will also give you insight into how long you can expect to pay your mortgage before your home is completely paid for.

Step 3: Get Approved for a Mortgage

According to Gallup, approximately one-third of all workers in the United States identify as part-time or full-time freelancers or contract workers. Self-employment can be enticing for a variety of reasons, and with its growing popularity, we can only hope modern lenders start shifting their preconceived notions about reliability and regulations for lending. That said, a whopping one-third of American workers may find it difficult to get approved for a mortgage with their self-employed status.

Fortunately, there are a number of clever moves you can make to better your chances of getting approved for a self employed home loan, including:

  1. Lowering your debt load.
  2. Registering and licensing your business.
  3. Paying yourself a W-2 wage rather than an owner’s draw.
  4. Reducing your tax deductions.
  5. Keeping separate business and personal accounts.
  6. Maintaining good records.

Step 4: Pick the Right Mortgage

There are several varieties of home loans, and exploring all of your options will make it easier for you to make an intelligent choice. The most common mortgage loans available include:

  • Conventional Loans
  • FHA Loans
  • USDA Loans
  • VA Loans

Wrapping Up

Purchasing a house requires a multitude of intricate moving parts and complex actions.  With just about any large investment, it’s worth taking your time with the process to ensure you move forward with a home and financial commitment decision you’re truly happy about. Using these steps, you will be able to walk into the next phase of your life with all the encouragement and trust you need, self-employed and all!

Six Ways US Online Casinos are Better than ‘Real’ Casinos

0

Glamorous hotel buildings, spacious gaming floors, endless carnivores, high-end poker tables: the best land-based casinos are breathtaking. They are designed to grab your attention at first-sight and motivate you to spend money endlessly.

So, why are online casinos performing better than Las Vegas casinos? According to financial experts, Internet-based betting websites are a hidden gem. They trump their brick and mortar counterparts in multiple ways.

In fact, the only possible reason for choosing Las Vegas over the Internet is the social experience. And even then, gaming websites have a solution for social casino players. Discover the details below.

Easy Access

When you think about it, a trip to a land-based casino takes a lot of time, money and sacrifices. First, you need to find enough money to fuel your car or pay for an air ticket. Then you need to book a hotel room and carry enough betting money.

On the flip side, online casinos are usually a few minutes away from your access. All you need is your computer—or maybe not. With an iPhone or Android device, you can play hundreds or slots and table games conveniently.

You could be at home relaxing on your sofa after a busy day at work. Or you could be on the subway, the bus or away on Holiday in the Bahamas. Regardless, you can play your favorite slots or play poker.

Bonuses and Loyalty Program

Unless you’re famous or rich, many land-based casinos don’t give you many freebies. You might get free drinks and free parking. But that’s it. If you want comps—bonuses to bet slots and card games for free—you must be a high roller.

In all fairness, Las Vegas casinos treat VIP customers like royalty. They get free air tickets and paid-for rides through limousines. Of course, they also get hotel accommodation, butler services and free chips.

But as mentioned, you only get 5-star treatment if you’re a VIP customer. On the Internet, you don’t need to be a higher roller to receive bonuses. In fact, sometimes you get freebies even before you place your first bet.

Named no deposit free spins, you receive these bonuses for creating a new account at some casinos. They come in small amounts, though: ten free spins or $20. According the best online casino USA guide, roulettesites.org, the biggest bonuses come when you deposit money.

Some casinos give you 100% of your first deposit as a bonus. Others double, triple or quadruple the amount for a maximum of up to $10, 000. Still, to be clear, that’s the welcome bonus alone. At the best sites, you get rewards weekly or monthly.

No Crowds

If you have been to a busy land-based casino, you know how crowdy it can get. Sure, people visit the establishments for different reasons. Some people want to play slots. Others visit for social events.

Still, the many guests at brick and mortar casinos make these places pretty crowdy. Sometimes you have to queue to play your favorite slot. Or you have to deal with noisy players even when your table game requires concentration.

Fortunately, you never have to deal with crowds at online casinos. If you choose slots, it’s you versus the machine. Most RNG table games can also be played alone. But if you want to play with another person, you can always move to the live casino section.

Broader Game Variety

Although land-based aren’t created equal, many of them provide far fewer games than their online counterparts. Las Vegas casinos offer up to 3000 slots and card games, so they are well-loaded.

But out there, the average brick and mortar casino features a handful of table games and no more than 200 slots. Additionally, not every game works. And worse, the games are replaced constantly.

On the Internet, there are more games than you can play in a year. Picture this. The average software developer has 70 games. Some companies have 1000+ slots and card games. And there are over 100 companies that create online casino games.

In other words, you can play thousands of slots and card games from over 100 software providers. All you need is to find a casino that provides your favorite gaming positions: bingo, roulette, blackjack, slots, sports betting, baccarat or craps.

Safe and Secure

One of the reasons why online casinos are mushrooming in the US is that they’re safer than a decade ago. So, what changed? For starters, online gambling is legal in many states. And that makes it easier to find betting apps licensed and regulated locally.

On the flip side, the safety and security standards of online casinos have increased. Nearly every operator features a secured website. They work with renowned developers and payment companies.

In other words, the room of getting scammed at today’s online casinos is slim. You could deposit $10 or $10,000 and you can be assured that your money is safe. When it comes to cash outs, the process is even safer than walking out with money from a brick and mortar establishment.

Truth be told, many land-based casinos are safe too. It’s hard to get robbed at an established casino in Las Vegas. And if you want, you don’t have to walk away with cash. You can provide your bank account and your money will be deposited. Still, to be clear, more and more people feel safe spending their money online.

Better Returns

Safety and security aside, another reason Americans are choosing online casinos is that they provide better value. For example, many online slots have a Return to Player (RTP) percentages of 90% to 99%. In contrast, the average land-based slot machine has an RTP of 88%.

Table games, also payout at better rates. And that’s because they have a lower house edge than their land-based competitors. Additionally, they come in many varieties, which ensure you can choose the best-paying games.

Your Turn

Unless you want to attend a concert held at a land-based casino, playing slots and card games online makes more sense. You don’t need to leave your house or spend a lot of money. And you don’t need to be rich to get bonuses.

It’s no mystery that the Earth’s climate is changing. While climate deniers claim it’s natural for the Earth’s temperatures to warm over time, the rapid acceleration of forest fires, hurricanes, and polar ice caps melting beg to differ. Climate change is real and happening fast, which is why you may be wondering what you can do in your personal life to make our world a cleaner, greener space.

While a bulk of pollution comes from big corporations and governments failing to pass legislation to hold them accountable, everyday practices of humans contribute to the climate crisis as well. To ensure you’re doing your part to build a sustainable future, take a look at these four practical ways to reduce your carbon footprint.

1. Use public transportation

Driving to and from work, to a friend’s house, or any other destination, emits tons of pollutants, such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen, into the air, which depletes the ozone layer and leads to warmer temperatures. When you multiply this by billions of drivers across the globe, it makes a serious impact.

By using public transportation, you’re splitting emissions between more than one person. This means fewer greenhouse gases will be emitted into the air. While it’s unrealistic to not drive at all, carpooling or taking public transportation a few times a week can add up over time and reduce your carbon footprint.

Other ways to reduce your carbon footprint while driving include:

  • Investing in an electric car that doesn’t run on fossil fuels
  • Keep your tires pumped to improve your fuel economy
  • Drive efficiently by going easy on the gas and breaks
  • Use cruise control on long drives

When you’re behind the wheel, think consciously of your actions to ensure you’re driving efficiently and cutting down on emissions.

2. Reduce plastic consumption

We’ve all heard of the massive plastic islands floating in the middle of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. These islands formed from decades of dumping plastic into our public water streams, including rivers, lakes, and oceans. Over time, they collected out to sea forming expansive islands that are hurting marine ecosystems.

Reducing your plastic consumption is another great way to reduce your carbon footprint. You probably use more plastic than you think of, such as water bottles, disposable coffee cups, and tea bags. To reduce your plastic consumption, consider these tips:

  • Use metal straws instead of plastic straws—or don’t use a straw at all
  • Bring reusable grocery bags to the store
  • Stop chewing gum (it’s made from plastic!)
  • Buy products made from boxes rather than plastic, such as laundry detergent or milk
  • Carry around a reusable water bottle
  • Bring containers for take-out food and leftovers

3. Install solar panels

Your home might be one of the biggest pollutants in your life. After all, it takes a lot of resources and energy to keep your home heated in the winter and cool in the summer. Most homes still run on electricity generated from fossil fuels like coal. If you have the funds, consider transitioning your home to a renewable energy source like solar. To mitigate some of the costs, you may want to consider property assessed clean energy (PACE) funding. With PACE funding, you can pay for home upgrades that increase energy efficiency, such as installing solar panels, energy-efficient windows, and wind-resistant roofing.

4. Shop secondhand

One of the biggest trends of 2020 is ditching fast fashion. Fast fashion consists of large retail stores that produce cheap, trendy garments that often go out of style with the seasons. Notable fast fashion retailers include Forever 21, Zara, and H&M. While clothes and accessories from these stores are affordable and trendy, they’re extremely harmful to the environment.

As much as you might love these stores, it’s best to part ways and shop secondhand at thrift stores. The beauty of thrifting is that you can find one-of-a-kind pieces not found anywhere else, and reduce demand in the fast fashion industry. And if you really want to buy something new, look for sustainable clothing brands that only roll out new items a few times a year and in a limited quantity.

The bottom line

Reducing your carbon footprint might seem like a lot of effort. However, there are plenty of small lifestyle changes you can make to reduce the amount of emissions your actions emit into the air. From using public transportation to shopping secondhand, these are just some of the ways you can reduce your carbon footprint.

3 Tips for Entrepreneurs Before Filing for Bankruptcy

Filing for bankruptcy is never an easy decision for a business owner. However, when times get tough, it can often be the best move available to you. If you’re an entrepreneur who’s considering filing for bankruptcy, take these three tips into account before you make it official. Tip #1: Determine Whether You Need to File for Bankruptcy

If you’re an entrepreneur who’s considering filing for bankruptcy, then there’s no doubt that you’re in some kind of financial trouble. Perhaps you rolled out your product or service at the wrong time, or you conducted a market analysis and found favorable conditions, but then the market took a nosedive the moment you entered it. On the other hand, maybe you made some management errors that proved costly for your business, or you got pushed out of the market by a competitor. There are a seemingly endless number of reasons that force a business to end up in financial peril. But with the economic depression that’s set in as a result of COVID-19, many businesses—from restaurants in New York to hotels in Hawaii—have found themselves in the same position as yourself.

Whatever the case may be, before filing for bankruptcy you should take some time to consider if there are any other possible options available to you. Are there any costs you could cut in order to keep your head above water? Are there any business practices that you still have time to change? Is it still possible to reach out to your creditors and renegotiate your debt?

If the answer to all of these questions is no, and you don’t see any other way out of your financial predicament, then bankruptcy may be the only answer. However, you should keep in mind that bankruptcy isn’t the end of the world. In fact, in some cases it’s actually a smart move that you can take in order to shield yourself from aggressive creditors and preserve your financial well-being.

Tip #2: Hire a Lawyer

Filing for bankruptcy can be an extremely arduous and complicated process, so it’s best to hire someone who knows what they’re doing to help you out. Once you’ve determined that bankruptcy is the only option available to you, consult with a bankruptcy lawyer in order to figure out your next steps. Keep in mind that bankruptcy laws vary based on where you live, so if your business is based in Chicago, for instance, then you’ll want to find a bankruptcy lawyer in Chicago who’s familiar with the local laws and regulations.

Tip #3: Decide Which Type of Bankruptcy is for You

Before filing for bankruptcy, you’ll have to decide which type of bankruptcy makes the most sense for your particular situation. There are three separate types of bankruptcy: Chapter 7, Chapter 11, and Chapter 13. Let’s discuss the major differences between these three.

Chapter 7 bankruptcy is used to essentially close down and liquidate a business entirely. Seeing as it eliminates unsecured debts and liquidates your business, a Chapter 7 bankruptcy is commonly used by small business owners who have taken on a lot of outstanding debt, but have very little income and few assets. It’s also beneficial to small business owners who just want to shut their business down, and don’t want to deal with things like negotiating with creditors and selling off their assets. That’s because, in this case, a bankruptcy trustee would be put in charge of liquidating your business’s assets and negotiating with creditors.

Chapter 11 bankruptcy is primarily used by corporations who are experiencing debt or cash flow problems, but don’t want to shut down entirely. This type of bankruptcy protects a business from creditors as it attempts to reorganize its finances under the watch of a court-appointed bankruptcy trustee. However, Chapter 11 can be a long, complicated, and, in the long-run, expensive process, which is why it’s almost always used by corporations or large companies.

Finally, you file a Chapter 13 bankruptcy when you and your business are legally considered to be a single entity. This type of bankruptcy usually means you don’t have to liquidate your assets but, on the other hand, you have to sort out a plan to repay your debts over a period of time. This approach is typically used by small business owners who continue to maintain an income with cash optimization and have a great deal of assets that they want to protect from seizure by creditors.

Sometimes filing for bankruptcy is inevitable. But, when you’re forced to take that step, make sure you do the right way, in order to protect yourself and your assets to the greatest possible extent.
