Duke Mayonnaise Is Returning To The Carolinas in Major Private Equity Firm Acquisition

Charlotte-based private equity firm Falfurrias Capital Partners has just finalized a deal to acquire C.F. Sauer Company’s entire food business, including the Duke Mayonnaise brand.

The Richmond-based C.F. Sauer Company was founded in 1887 and now manufactures a broad line of condiments, spices, seasonings and extracts, including Duke’s Mayonnaise, The Spice Hunter, Sauer’s, Gold Medal, and BAMA.

According to DukesMayo.com, C.F. Sauer acquired the Greenville-based mayonnaise company in 1929 after founder Eugenia Duke struggled to keep up with demand.

The Sauer deal is the latest in a string of acquisitions for Falfurrias, a private equity firm co-founded in 2006 by former Bank of America CEO Hugh McColl Jr. and CFO Marc Oken.

“Being from the South, we know the Duke’s brand well and took the next step of learning more about the portfolio,” said Falfurrias Principal Chip Johnson.

“I am so grateful to all of the people of The C.F. Sauer Company who have helped write our company’s tremendous success story over the past 132 years, and I look to the future with great optimism,” said CEO Conrad F. Sauer IV. “We have found the ideal growth partner in Falfurrias Capital Partners, and I look forward to working with Bill and the rest of the team to author the next chapter.”

The transaction is still subject to final shareholder approval, which will take place at The C.F. Sauer Company’s annual meeting on July 15.

U.S. Department of Labor Recovers $82,398 in Back Wages From La Unica Restaurant

After an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division (WHD), Brawi Inc. – operating as La Unica Mexican Restaurant in Huntersville, North Carolina – has paid $82,398 in back wages and liquidated damages to 10 employees for violating the overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

WHD investigators found the restaurant paid some employees, including cooks, dishwashers, and bussers, flat salaries each workweek without regard to the number of hours they actually worked. This practice resulted in violations when those employees worked more than 40 hours in a workweek but were not paid overtime. La Unica also failed to keep records of the number of hours these employees worked each week, violating FLSA recordkeeping requirements.

“Paying a set salary does not excuse employers from having to pay overtime to nonexempt employees who work more than 40 hours per week,” said Wage and Hour Division District Director Richard Blaylock, in Raleigh, North Carolina. “Employers must familiarize themselves with federal wage laws to ensure their employees receive the wages they have rightfully earned. This investigation should serve as an opportunity for other employers to evaluate their pay practices to ensure that they are operating in compliance. Violations like these can be avoided.”

The Department offers numerous resources to ensure employers have the tools they need to understand their responsibilities and to comply with federal law, such as online videos, confidential calls, or in-person visits to local WHD offices.

Charlotte Pastors and City Leaders Organizing A Massive Mt Island Lake Cleanup

A group of local pastors, non-profits, and city leaders are now organizing a massive cleanup effort for the devastated communities around Mountain Island Lake.

Last week, after several days of heavy rainfall, Lake Norman opened their flood gates and rose the water level of Mountain Island Lake to historic heights. Hundreds of buildings, yards, and cars were submerged for at least 12 hours. Some of the hardest hit homes saw over 6 feet of water fill their first floors, wreaking havoc on their floors, walls, and most of their possessions.

Jack Homesley, the senior pastor at Calvary Baptist Church, posted the request for help to the ‘For Charlotte’ Facebook page and website, saying, “This Saturday, June 22nd, a service day has been organized by the Department of Emergency Management to help families impacted by the flooding”.

The event on For Charlotte’s website details what is needed and what local volunteers can expect this weekend;

The need in the short term is manpower to assist with moving items out of residences and clean-up.

Severe Thunderstorms With Possible Tornadoes Hitting Charlotte Region Today

The Charlotte region is now under a severe storm warning for this afternoon.

The National Weather Service has just issued the following alert;

“Active convective weather is in store today across the western Carolinas and Northeast Georgia. Thunderstorms will develop around mid-day and become quite strong or severe through the afternoon as they move east. Some of these storms will be capable of producing large hail, damaging winds, and a tornado or two is not out of the question. Heavy rainfall and frequent cloud to ground lightning will also be possible with some of these storms.”

According to WeatherUnderground.com, the Charlotte area could be seeing the worst of the storm between 3 pm and 7 pm this afternoon;

Severe wind, hail, and tornadoes all have the potential to knock out power for entire neighborhoods.

GIGA Data Centers, LLC (GIGA) today announced the company officially opened its 165,800 square foot CLT-1 Data Center in Mooresville, NC.

The new facility will give small to mid-sized companies access to high-performance computing capabilities, including advanced artificial intelligence (AI), real-time global finance calculations, and simulated healthcare applications.

According to CEO Jake Ring: “GIGA’s new facility is an efficiency milestone for the colocation industry that places world-class hosting and carrier-neutral services in an ideal location to offer a lower-priced option over more costly data center fees charged in other markets.”

The new facility leverages a highly energy-efficient modular design first used by the U.S. Department of Energy, representing the latest data center innovation to cost-effectively enable high-performance computing —a compute service typically only afforded by large corporations.  This innovation is GIGA’s WindChill® Enclosure system which provides hot/cold aisle isolation and adiabatic cooling to lower data center OPEX and offer rack-power density at 4.1₵ per kWhr.

The company received $6.6 million in tax incentives to build the CLT-1 Data Center and they will be adding 25 full-time jobs with above average salaries to the region.

Truliant Suing BB&T and SunTrust Over Their New Merged Name ‘Truist’

Truliant Federal Credit Union has filed a federal trademark-infringement lawsuit over Truist, the name of BB&T and SunTrust’s new merged company, which will be headquartered in Charlotte (they should have gone with the name most Charlotte residents voted on).

Truliant is arguing that, since they have 13 branches around Charlotte, the similar-sounding name would potentially cause confusion for their customers.

“This is a clear infringement on our name, and their proximity to our main business region will confuse consumers and undermine the trust we have built in our institution,” said Truliant President Todd Hall.

BB&T and SunTrust still need final regulatory approval before they complete their merger, which would become the largest financial institution merger since 2008.

The new bank plans to build its headquarters in Uptown Charlotte’s Hearst Tower. The former community banking centers of both companies will remain in operation in Winston-Salem and Atlanta.

The board of the new company will be comprised of an equal number of executives from both companies.

“This is a true merger of equals, combining the best of both companies to create the premier financial institution of the future,” said BB&T Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Kelly S. King.

The new bank will add $442 billion in banking assets to Charlotte, bringing us one step closer to regaining the title of “second biggest banking city in America“.

A video of Charlotte’ mayor was just broadcasted around the world on the White Houses’ main social media channels.

The video was sent out in conjunction with Charlotte hosting the second American Workforce Policy Advisory Board meeting this week.

In a video, Mayor Lyles said “…In my city of Charlotte, North Carolina, we have people that are coming in and they’re doing great things, they have the education to do financial and technology jobs…but many of the people who built our city, who’ve lived here for a long time, they haven’t had the access to the education or the training necessary for that…”

Yesterday, Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles joined First Daughter Ivanka Trump, Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, several CEOs, and state governors for the meeting held in Uptown Charlotte’s Foundation for the Carolinas offices.

The members of the American Workforce Policy Advisory Board were selected back in March – Charlotte’s Mayor Lyles was the only mayor in the country to be selected.

The goals of the board include; developing a new national campaign to promote a variety of pathways to career success, modernizing recruitment and training policies, increasing data transparency to match workers with jobs, and enhancing employer-led training investments.
