Governor Cooper Appoints Mujtaba A. Mohammed to NCCDD
Governor Roy Cooper has appointed State Senator Mujtaba A. Mohammed (D-Mecklenburg) to the North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities (NCCDD).
The senator will serve his first term on the Council working collaboratively across the State to assure that people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD) and their families participate in the design of and have access to needed community services, individualized supports and other forms of assistance that promote self-determination, independence, productivity and inclusion in all areas of community life.
“I have always been proud to be familiar with the work and renowned national reputation of the Council for its advocacy for individuals with developmental disabilities. I am pleased to hear about the progress the Council is already making to promote less restrictive alternatives to guardianship and respecting the rights of individuals in guardianship and those facing guardianship,” Sen. Mohammed says.
“As a member of the North Carolina Senate, I represent the citizens of North Carolina and I am committed to raising awareness and support for individuals with developmental disabilities at the state level.”
In addition to his duties as a state senator, Mohammed is a trial attorney in the Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office. “I provide holistic legal representation to indigent clients throughout the criminal court settings. In addition, I strive to connect underprivileged clients and their families to community-based services,” explains Mohammed. “The position often requires me to collaborate with social workers, treatment providers andagencies to achieve positive outcomes for the clients I represent.”
Mohammed holds a Juris Doctorate from North Carolina Central University School of Law and a bachelor’s degree in History from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.
He, along with the 39 other Governor-appointed Council members, will work to identify problems facing the community through its five-year planning process and fund innovative projects and initiatives that promote the goals of the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act (DD Act) for all North Carolinians.
The Council work is guided by their Five-Year State Plan and focuses on three main goals for the state’s I/DD community:
  • Increasing financial security through asset development
  • Increasing community living
  • Increasing advocacy development
He serves on the Council’s Community Living Committee where he sees work that is needed.
“Due to the lack of appropriate funding at this time to address transportation and housing challenges for individuals with developmental disabilities, the Council should work to develop programming to address social isolation and create natural supports outside of the family,” explains Sen. Mohammed.
Currently living in Charlotte, NC with his wife and their two young sons, Senator Mohammed is on the board of directors for the Council for Children’s Rights, the Larry King Clubhouse Children’s Care Center and Mecklenburg Ministries.

Charlotte Start-Up Invented The World’s First 100% Alpaca Performance Shirt

Charlotte-based Appalachian Gear Company (AGC) is trying to make their mark in the outdoors and performance clothing industry with their patented new process for thin knitting with natural Alpaca fibers.

Alpaca fibers are normally spun into thick wool strands, similar to sheep’s wool, limiting its usage to products like sweaters, socks, and blankets. AGC has now invented a new way of spinning the fibers into tight thin sheets that, to their surprise, perform even better than synthetic performance fibers (used in polyester running shirts).

The company launched a Kickstarter campaign to start manufacturing here in Charlotte and they exceeded their goal by 115%;

Statesville City Council Strikes Down Amendment That Would Allow Massive Flag To Fly

The Statesville City Council just voted to cancel an amendment that would have allowed Gander Camping World’s massive 40′ by 80′ flag to continue to fly.

Backstory:

For the past several decades, a Statesville city ordinance has limited publically displayed flag sizes to 25′ by 40′ (or smaller). After several warnings and refusals by Gander to comply with the city’s policy, the city issued a letter, telling them that they must take down the over-sized flag or face a daily penalty of $50 (retroactive to 10/15/18).

Last month, after over a quarter million petition signatures and national media attention, city leaders drafted an amendment that would allow the massive flag to continue to fly.

According to a press release by the city, Statesville Mayor Costi Kutteh has asked the Statesville Planning Department to draft a new amendment that would change the regulated size of flags displayed in a highway business zone to allow for the flag that’s currently displayed at Gander RV on I-77.

“In speaking with city council members, I believe this is the direction the majority of council would like to go at this time. Some terrible things have been said about our wonderful town,” said Kutteh, “and it hasn’t come from our citizens. But people from all over the country have jumped on this issue and called us names I can’t repeat. When our community’s efforts to conduct business in an orderly, lawful manner begins to hurt our businesses, then it’s time to put a stop to it.”

What Now:

With the new amendment struck down, the $50 daily fine will continue to pile up.

The CEO of Gander said publically that he’s willing to pay the fines and that he will not take the flag down.

With summer now in full swing, the personal-finance website WalletHub took a close look at 2019’s Best Beach Towns to Live in.

Out of the hundreds of popular beach towns in America, WalletHub found Charlotte’s suburb town of Cornelius to be the 3rd best lake beach town in the country.

To determine the most livable beachside communities, the website compared 192 cities across 62 key metrics. The data set ranges from housing costs to share of for-sale waterfront homes to quality of beach water.

Their study divides beach towns into two categories, those by the ocean and those by lakes. 3 Carolina towns made it on at least one of the top 10 lists, including North Myrtle Beach, SC as the 7th best Ocean Beach Town, Davidson, NC as the 7th best Lake Beach Town, and Cornelius, NC as the 3rd best Lake Beach Town in America;

First Daughter Ivanka Trump is coming to Charlotte this week according to White House Officials.

She’ll be making two stops as part of a workforce development initiative.

Her first stop in the Queen City will be at Siemens new Advanced Energy Hub in Steele Creek, where she will be accompanied by Mayor Vi Lyles and Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross.

Ivanka will also be attending the American Workforce Policy Advisory Board Meeting, to be held at the Foundation for the Carolinas (220 N. Trade St. in Uptown Charlotte).

Charlotte Bike TrailThe City of Charlotte is partnering with Mecklenburg County to create a 26-mile trail and greenway facility that will stretch all the way from South Carolina, through Pineville and Uptown Charlotte, then up to UNCC until it hits the Cabarrus County line in Harrisburg.

The finished project will be called the Cross Charlotte Trail (XCLT). Once completed, it will officially be the longest paved biking trail in North Carolina – you’ll be able to ride seamlessly from one end of Mecklenburg County to the other. The longest current trail is the The American Tobacco Trail extending 22 miles from Durham to down to Wake County.

UPDATE: 8/17/2017 Charlotte just approved the latest addition to the trail — a new $1.2 million segment that will connect the Little Sugar Creek Greenway at Parkwood Avenue to the 24th Street trail.

Many uptown workers are already using folding bikes on the trail to travel to and from work.

The City of Charlotte is projecting that the trail will extend from Matheson Avenue in NoDa all the way down to Pineville by the year 2025.

UPDATE: 6/17/2019 The City of Charlotte just announced an update to the new Cross Charlotte Trail (XCLT) Brandywine to Tyvola Segment.

Construction is expected to start by the end of 2019. Because of limited funding and rising construction costs, the previously planned pedestrian bridge at Brandywine Road will not be constructed as part of this segment.

“The B2T is a 1.2 mile stretch of the 26-miles of trail and greenway facility that will stretch from the City of Pineville through Center City and on to the UNC Charlotte campus and Cabarrus County line. Residents will be able to travel seamlessly from one end of Charlotte to the other with approximately 98,000 jobs within a half-mile of the proposed trail and reaching many treasured places across Charlotte.”

One of the most beautiful and most dangerous sea creatures in the world is starting to wash up onto Carolina beaches.

On Thursday, a South Carolina Police Chief alerted his followers of the dangerous creature.

Chief Cornett posted a picture of the creature on his Twitter page, telling his followers; “They look pretty cool but they can have a pretty hard sting. If you see one please don’t try to pet it…”

Last week, several man o’ wars were found on a Sullivan Island beach and near the Surfside Pier in Myrtle Beach;

According to a press release from Sullivan’s Island, “This is the first man o’ war which has been identified on our beach. Last week there were reports of Portuguese man o’ war at beaches in Northern Georgia and Southern South Carolina.”

According to National Geographic, “The tentacles contain batteries of cells that house miniscule, hollow harpoons called nematocysts. Those barbed harpoons act like hypodermic needles, enabling the man-of-war to inject a potent mix of venom into a victim.”

Last summer, there was a wave of man o’ war stings in South Carolina, causing hundreds of hospitalizations and closing several beaches.

If you’re planning on visiting a Carolina beach over the next few weeks, officials are now advising beachgoers to carry jellyfish sting ointment with them in case of stings.

If you spot a Man ‘O War jellyfish, please contact the lifeguard or local police.

Charlotte Animal Shelters Launch New “Staycation” Program To Give Dogs a Break

Due to overcapacity issues around our area, animal shelters are becoming increasingly creative with how they can help dogs and cats feel loved.

The Charlotte Animal Care and Control (AC&C) just launched a new program that they hope will not only encourage their furry friends but also increase adoption rates. They’re calling it the “staycation program”.

According to the AC&C’s website, “An #ACCstaycation is a field trip for a shelter dog. It can be hanging out at your house, going for a hike, a trip to your favorite fast food drive-thru, a nap on your couch, whatever you and your Staycation dog are up for!”

If you can’t commit to a multi-day ‘staycation’, there are even openings for ‘staycation walkers’ for people who just want to enjoy the company of a furry little friend for a few hours.

The goal of the program is not only to make the dogs feel more loved in a home environment, but also to give the shelter staff a break and to give more people a greater opportunity to consider permanent adoption.
