Charlotte’s 2016 Keith Scott Protests Featured In Budweiser’s New ‘Typical American’ Superbowl Ad

Charlotte made it to the Super Bowl again, but this time not for football.

The 2016 Charlotte protests following the killing of Keith Lamont Scott by a CMPD officer are featured in an early-released version of this year’s Budweiser Super Bowl ad.

The ‘Typical American’ ad includes brief moments during the protest when San Diego’s Ken Nwakike Jr. can be seen standing in front of a CMPD police line wearing a “free hugs” shirt, then the video cuts to a clip of him hugging a police officer;

While Budweiser’s new ad frames the protests in a relatively positive light, the memory of Keith Scott’s death, the rioting in Uptown Charlotte, and the death of a protester on Wednesday night is what many in Charlotte will remember from that fateful summer;

Due to the widespread pain, loss, anger, and damage done during the events of 2016, many are now slamming Budweiser for the way they used the footage;

Charlotte Ranked 8th Least Affordable U.S. City For Minimum-Wage Workers

Rent prices have increased by 2% to 4% nationwide each year since 2011, according to CoreLogic. While gains in federal and state minimum wage rules have somewhat mitigated the bite for lower-wage earners in certain areas, it’s often not enough to compete with the rising cost of housing. Meanwhile, the population of renters has increased, forcing renters to compete for a finite supply of rental housing, which is already pricing out some people.

According to a new report by Lending Tree, Charlotte ranks 8th in the nation as the  least affordable major U.S. city for minimum-wage workers.

Charlotte Dealership Opening Their Lot As A Safe Place For Anyone Sleeping In Their Car

After discovering that some in Charlotte are getting arrested for sleeping in their cars in private parking lots, one local car dealership decided to step in to help.

Last week, they announced on Facebook that they would be allowing those who are in need to park their car in their lot.

Their post talks at length about why they are opening their lot:

“We have been praying and asking God what to do with some extra space we have had for years…We know that some families are struggling and in a tough situation. Yea whole families sleeping in the car…We will provide a safe place to park at night. As this service to the community develops we will look to help these families in other ways but right now a safe place is what we can offer…”

Since first making the announcement on the 23rd, the post has gone viral after being picked up and shared by news agencies around the country.

New 15-Story Tower Will Include Uptown Charlotte’s First Publix

A new 4th Ward mid-rise is about to change Charlotte’s skyline once again.

The new 15-story tower will be called ‘Ten Tryon’ and will include a massive 28,000 square foot grocery store – Uptown Charlotte’s first Publix.

The project will be built next to the twin ‘Skyhouse Apartments’ between 9th and 10th streets.

The plan originally called for the development to include 9 stories, but according to a new press release from developers, they have now added an additional 5 stories to the tower.

According to Axiom Architecture, “Ten Tryon will be a catalytic new mixed-use development on North Tryon Street in Uptown Charlotte. Armada Hoffler Development and Centro Cityworks are partnering to create a building that spans the full block between 9th and 10th Streets. Three levels of parking above a ground floor grocery store anchor the buildings base. Atop the parking is an expansive terrace that will serve as an elevated urban park between a signature restaurant space and a ten story office tower. In total, the new building will rise 15 stories above street level and aims to bring new life to this portion of Uptown.”

The new tower will included a total of 215,000 square feet, including 175,000 square feet of new office space, and over 30,000 square feet of new retail.

Public property records show that the piece of land was purchased last week by Armada Hoffler Development for $4.25 million.

Construction on Ten Tryon is expected start the second quarter of this year and has a projected completion date in the summer of 2022.

Salvation Army Unveils Massive New Vision For New Facilities in Charlotte

In a move signaling its long-term commitment to the issues facing Charlotte, The Salvation Army has announced future plans to significantly increase services for families in need around the Charlotte area. The organization made the announcement last week, at an event attended by members of the national Salvation Army advisory board, nationwide Salvation Army leadership and local community leaders.

Future plans include opening neighborhood Community Centers – either by repurposing existing facilities or building new ones – and constructing a new Center of Hope shelter facility.

“Our vision is to be a catalyst for social, economic and spiritual growth in our community,” said Major Larry Broome, Area Commander for The Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte. “Through our programs today, and the services we’ll offer tomorrow, we’ll continue to meet human needs by offering hope, promoting dignity and providing opportunity – all in the name of Christ.”

Community Centers will match the needs of the neighborhood and offer services such as Boys & Girls Clubs, health clinics, mental health services, occupational training events, financial literacy classes and senior programs, as well as Bible study and prayer groups.

“We believe the model for combating some of the city’s biggest challenges is to focus on neighborhoods of high need and partner with other nonprofits, corporations and churches to deliver these high-quality programs,” said Broome.

A new Center of Hope facility will offer emergency shelter, transitional housing and support services under one roof, along with increased space for serving intact families, which has traditionally been a gap in the local homeless services network.

“We plan to double down on our efforts to fight homelessness and help families get back on their feet,” added Broome. “This planned Center of Hope facility will allow us to serve more families and serve them better.”

The Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte is in the initial phases of the process. It began with a third-party study examining the needs of the community and conducting interviews with key community leaders. This process helped The Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte’s leadership determine the strategy moving forward to best serve neighbors in need.

While no new construction projects – or locations – are confirmed today, conversations are moving forward to work with our existing partners and develop new ones in the future to fund these community assets.

More information will be provided as plans progress.

With Super Bowl LIV just days away, football is rising to the top of everyone’s mind. In some cities, like Pittsburgh, Green Bay, and Boston, the atmosphere is becoming electric, however, in others, not much has changed…

Davidson, NC is one such place, ranking as the 4th worst city in America for football fans.

The personal-finance website WalletHub compared more than 240 U.S. cities with at least one college or professional football team based on 21 key metrics. The data set ranges from number of NFL and college football teams to average ticket prices.

However, finding the perfect gift for a friend or loved one shouldn’t be so difficult if they’re a major NBA fan and, more specifically, a fan of the Charlotte Hornets. As we’ve already given some ideas for Panthers fans, it’s time for basketball lovers to get some attention as well. Below, we’ll list some cool present ideas, and show some of the worst gifts you could possibly give someone… you’ve been warned! Let’s have a look.

Replica jersey

We love the new school Hornets, including Devonte’ Graham, Miles Bridges, and Bismack Biyombo, but when you’re getting a replica jersey, you’ve just got to go old school. The striped teal jerseys are practically known the world over and are still worn by the Hornets on occasion. There’s no one better than Larry Johnson to show true fandom. The big power forward, along with Alonzo Mourning and Muggsy Bogues, really put Charlotte basketball on the map during the 90s. Sometimes you just got to go simple but effective for a gift. This white and camo-print shirt looks awesome and the Buzz City slogan is something that not everyone will understand, but one that the true fans will definitely know. It’s 100% cotton, too, so you can be comfortable while looking great.

Kids’ t-shirt

Even your little ones can show their support for the Hornets! This cute shirt is emblazoned with arguably the league’s best mascot, Hugo. The bubbly font and the dark blue color look great and we’re sure that any kid would enjoy opening up the wrapping paper to find this on Christmas Day.

Giant Jenga game

This one is pretty weird. Support your team by watching it fall? We’re not sure why a Jenga game really needs a Charlotte Hornets logo on it, but clearly someone thought it did. It’s not the cheapest item in the store either, meaning you could get much cooler items for the same price. Somehow we can’t imagine a Jenga game as the best thing to bring to the Spectrum Center to cheer on the team!

Doormat

We don’t think you should wipe your feet all over your team’s logo! We get that it instantly represents you as a major Hornets fan straight away to any visitor, but there’s a time and a place for this sort of logo. Just get an ordinary doormat, or one with a team you really hate.

Hurricanes, Panthers, Hornets: Which NC Team has the Best Shot at 2020 Success?

With a new year comes another shot at glory for the teams of North Carolina. The 2019 season ended rather abruptly for the Carolina Panthers, given their surprisingly good early run without Cam Newton, while 2020 commences the second half of a season of potential for the Carolina Hurricanes and Charlotte Hornets.

While there is still a long way to go for the Canes and the Hornets, and the Panthers’ 2020 campaign hasn’t started yet, we can already begin to gauge which sport looks set to yield the state of North Carolina the most success this year.

Hornets in with a chance of the postseason

Since becoming the Charlotte Hornets for the start of the 2014/15 season, North Carolina’s NBA representative has only made it into the playoffs once in its five seasons. In 2015/16, the Hornets finished sixth in the Eastern Conference but went out in the first round following a grueling seven-game series with the Miami Heat.

After losing Kemba Walker to the free agency over the summer, it looked as though the Charlotte Hornets started rebuilding, even if management termed it as a “transition.” Past the halfway mark of the NBA season, it’s now clear that rebuilding and giving time to youth is the primary aim, and yet the team is within a sniff of making it to the playoffs this season.

It’s a bit of a long shot, but with the Hornets sitting at .341 and .450 being enough to clinch a playoff place at the time of writing, a good run of games could result in success. After that, however, the Hornets are still way out at +30,000 to claim the NBA Championship – which is understandable.

Panthers may now have to go into a rebuild

It was a rough 2019 season for the Carolina Panthers, first losing Cam Newton to then go on to finish the season 5-11. Early on after Newton’s injury, the team played well, but by the end of the season, it appeared to be little more than a mirage. If the sacking of Ron Rivera wasn’t the start, Luke Kuechly’s sudden retirement should be the beginning of a Panthers rebuild.

Newton and Greg Olsen look set to leave the team in the offseason, but with top young stars like Christian McCaffrey and Shaq Thompson on the team, there are some solid pieces to build around. The additional incentive is that the NFC is a strong conference right now.

Not only is the New Orleans Saints in the NFC South, but the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers both went 13-3 and are +135 and +650 to win the Super Bowl in the football betting at Space Casino, respectively. On top of those goliaths, there are also the Seattle Seahawks, Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles, and Dallas Cowboys looking to dictate the conference over the next season or two. As such, now might be the perfect time to commence a rebuild and invest in bringing in some top-class prospects.

The ‘Bunch of Jerks’ might just do it again

Last season’s hockey in North Carolina was almost too good to be true. Spurred on by the Don Cherry-gifted ‘Bunch of Jerks’ moniker, the Carolina Hurricanes surged to the Conference Finals of the playoffs last season. Led by young stars Andrei Svechnikov, Teuvo Teravainen, the recently injured Dougie Hamilton, Sebastian Aho, Martin Necas, and Jaccob Slavin, the Canes are exciting and are winning games.

Quite possibly the most surprising aspect of the season which has seen the Hurricanes flirt with the divisional playoff places this season, is the goaltending. Two perpetually back-up grade goaltenders in Petr Mrazek and James Reimer are both putting up starter-worthy stats, with the Czech building on his strong first season as a Cane in 2018/19.

The Hurricanes have it them to claim a divisional playoff spot this season and are the favorites to claim a wild card place again. After their surging run through the playoffs last season, the Canes are at +1600 to win the Stanley Cup this season. Given how young the roster is, this is quite an incredible amount of backing from the experts.

While the Hornets and Panthers look to be building for the future throughout 2020, the young Hurricanes might just have a shot at Stanley Cup glory this year.

Possible Case of Coronavirus Discovered In North Carolina

The NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) has just announced that a possible case of coronavirus is now being investigated in North Carolina. The person now under quarantine recently traveled to China and passed through Wuhan City, where the outbreak first originated.

According to a press release by the NCDHHS, “This person arrived at Raleigh-Durham International Airport on Jan. 23, 2020. The patient presented with mild respiratory symptoms and is currently in good condition and being cared for in isolation at Duke University Hospital. The Division of Public Health is arranging testing for the novel coronavirus at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A diagnosis cannot be confirmed at this time. DHHS will update the public as soon as the results from the CDC are available.”

The Coronavirus was first discovered in Wuhan, China in December and has since spread to most provinces of the country. So far there have been 846 cases confirmed with at least 26 people having already died from the virus.

This week’s Chinese New Year holiday has increased concerns of a pandemic as hundreds of millions of Chinese residents and visitors travel across the country to visit friends, relatives, and tourist sights.

Here in the United States, the first confirmed case of the coronavirus was announced on Tuesday in Washington State, and the second was confirmed by the CDC yesterday morning in Chicago.

According to the CDC, patients with confirmed 2019-nCoV infection have reportedly had mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms of:

  • fever
  • cough
  • shortness of breath

CDC believes at this time that symptoms of 2019-nCoV may appear in as few as 2 days or as long as 14 after exposure. This is based on what has been seen previously as the incubation period of MERS viruses.
