The Underexposed Film Festival yc, presented by Morton & Gettys, showcases the best in independent filmmaking from around the world. Originally slated to occur in late March, the 2020 festival has been rescheduled, and is now set to run October 21 – 24, 2020 exclusively online at https://vimeo.com/yorkcountyarts. Tickets are $5 per screening block, and are available to purchase from the Arts Council’s on-demand screening site at Vimeo.
Established in 2012, the Underexposed Film Festival yc focuses on strength in storytelling, screening films that break down the fourth wall and envelop the audience in the story. Filmmakers often share their experiences during question and answer sessions that follow the screenings, giving festivalgoers a glimpse into their vision and process.
From the plight of Judas camels to the celebration of diversity, the slate of films screening in the 2020 festival tackles a variety of subjects through unconventional storytelling. History turned upside down by puppets, a rescued monkey telling his own story, and conception explained through dance are examples of the risks these talented women and men have taken to convey their stories this season.
An ancient artform, puppetry has been used in filmmaking since the early days of film, with large-scale puppets that were used in films like The Witch (1906) by director Georges Melies. It wasn’t until the 1930s that audiences saw the rise of puppetry through short film. George Pal, a notable pioneer in stop motion puppetry on film, used groundbreaking techniques that lead to the creation of a series of films known as Puppetoons. These short films became popular in the U.S. and Europe; however puppetry wouldn’t hit the big time until the late 1970s and 1980s when Jim Henson brought The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, and movies featuring The Muppets to the silver screen. Today, multiple generations flock to theaters and gather around televisions to experience the fantastical world of puppetry, and a new generation of puppeteers and filmmakers continues to push the genre forward. The UFFyc has supported puppetry films since its inception. Season 9 marks our first year with a Best Puppetry Film category.
Awards will be announced online Friday, October 30, 2020. The 2020 awards include: Grand Jury Award; Best Animated Film; Best Documentary Film; Best Experimental Film; Best Narrative Film; Best Puppetry Film; Woman to Watch; Cinema Carolina; Best Student Film | Collegiate; and the Terry Roueche Audience Choice Award. 2020 awards partners include: Cinematiq, and Toon Boom.

Early voting just started in North Carolina, and given how divisive and significant the upcoming presidential election has become, many Charlotteans didn’t waste any time in getting to the polls.
Lines formed before early voting locations even opened this morning, including at the Bank of America Stadium and Spectrum Center, but for many residents, the wait wasn’t too bad.
One local voter recounted on Instagram, “We got there and got in line around 7:45am. They opened at 8:00am. We were done about 8:50am.”
When renting, it’s only natural you would want to get as much space for as little money as possible. But should you get your hopes up? It depends where you live. In a recent study by RentCafe, 100 of the most populous U.S. cities were analyzed to find out how much space a median income can get without a person becoming rent-burdened.
Here are the highlights from the report for the state of North Carolina:
30% of a median wage can get you 750 to almost 900 square feet of space in North Carolina’s largest cities. That’s about the size of a one-bedroom apartment.
Households living on a typical income can afford to rent the most space in Raleigh, 893 square feet, whereas in Winston-Salem they’d get the least space for their money, 750 square feet. In Charlotte or Greensboro you could upgrade to an apartment with more than 800 square feet, while in Durham 30% of a typical wage will be enough for only 777 square feet.
None of the North Carolina cities we studied offer above-average-sized places for those who live on a regular income and don’t want to break the bank. City averages here circle around 900 square feet, which goes to show how much more than 30% of your wage you’d need to spend just to get an average apartment in the city with a regular income.
If you were to switch states, you could afford above-average apartments even on a median income. In nearby Virginia, for example, in Virginia Beach and Arlington you could live comfortably in 900 or 1,000 square-foot apartments and spend no more than 30% of your monthly salary on rent.
Looking at the other end of the spectrum, you could afford only 621 square feet in Atlanta, GA and even less in Washington, D.C., 465 square feet, if you were to limit your renting costs to 30% of a regular monthly wage.

With the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors reducing the number of in-person voting options this year, sports arenas around the country are opening their doors to voters for safe, in-person polling options.
Election Super Centers, a non-partisan group, along with legendary basketball coach Doc Rivers and organizations across the country, are working with local election authorities and more than 60 NBA, MLB, NFL, NHL and MLS arenas, leagues and teams to let communities know their local venues are participating as polling sites – for a campaign called “Make History Here.”
Here in Charlotte, two of our biggest venues will be opening their doors and sanitizing their handrails for socially distanced voting options.
