“One thing that a lottery does is create unique once-in-a-lifetime prizes. We can offer these great prize thanks to our new partnership with the Carolina Panthers. Education Lottery.

carolinapanthers-ticketart-8-2-16The lottery has had a marketing partnership with the Panthers for six years, but this will be the first time season tickets will be offered.

Lottery players can find the tickets at most of the state’s 6,800 lottery retail locations.

“The N.C. Education Lottery has been a great partner for the past six years. We are excited this year that we can expand that partnership to bring the first ever Panthers branded scratch-off ticket to North Carolina, giving fans the chance to win once-in-a-lifetime experiences with the Carolina Panthers.” commented Danny Morrison, president of the Carolina Panthers.

The $5 scratch-off ticket begins with three top prizes of $200,000, with overall odds of winning a top prize set at 1 in 1.1 million and the odds of winning a break-even prize being 1 in 4.08. All tickets can be entered into the second-chance drawing for a grand prize of 20 years of Panthers season tickets, a VIP game experience, and other prizes. The odds of winning the grand prize will depend on how many entries are submitted.

Panthers fans aged 18 and up can also win free pairs of tickets to one of the 10 pre-season or regular season home games this season by showing their Panthers Pride on the lottery’s social media channels. Five weekly drawings will be held with each offering two pairs of game tickets and four $100 Panther-branded gift cards to buy team merchandise.

This Gaston County BBQ Joint Just Won The Gold Medal For Best BBQ In America

gastonia bbq truck won national competitionThe legendary Smoke in the Mountains barbecue contest just finished up in Galax, Va, and believe it or not, a Gaston County BBQ food truck came out on top.

The annual festival pitted some of the greatest bbq restaurants in the country against each other, including the Shed, a Mississippi restaurant with it’s own Food Network show.

Alex Ranucci, owner of Ranucci’s Big Butt BBQ, was initially surprised that his slow cooked pork shoulder beat out some of America’s top bbq contenders, but he certainly wasn’t hesitant to take the coveted banjo when the winner was announced.

Ranucci’s Big Butt BBQ is a catering business and food truck that has been a staple in Belmont’s food truck scene, and has recently expanded to Steele Creek and Plaza Midwood’s food truck festivals.

Federal Court Strikes Down North Carolina’s Voter ID Law Due To “Racial Discriminatory Intent”

north carolina voter id lawA federal appeals court just struck down North Carolina’s new requirements that voters must show specific photo identification and follow other rules that disproportionately affected minorities, saying that the new laws deliberately “target African-Americans with almost surgical precision” in an attempt to decrease black turnout at the polls.

The new law stipulated that a drivers license, state issued ID card, passport, military or Native American card would be required for a person to vote. It basically stopped the 318,000 registered North Carolina voters — disproportionately African-Americans and Latinos — that do not have a driver’s license, state issued, military, or tribal ID card. (birth certificates, social security cards, bank statements, or other forms of ID were no longer accepted). The law also stopped early voting and same-day registration.

The appeals court cited data that these methods were used disproportionately by black voters.

In 2012, 70 percent of black voters used early voting — and cast ballots at a slightly higher percentage than whites. Although black voters made up about 20 percent of the electorate, they made up 41 percent of voters who used same-day registration.

The new 2013 ‘Voter ID’ law was created in an attempt to stop voter impersonation, however, there was never any evidence of voter impersonation that might justify the voter ID requirements established by the new law.

When the law was originally passed in 2013, a former NC Republican Chairman even stated, “If it hurts a bunch of lazy blacks that want the government to give them everything, so be it…”

Today’s ruling from the three-judge panel states that “the legislature enacted one of the largest restrictions of the franchise in modern North Carolina history” when it rewrote voting laws in 2013.

The ruling also stated that, “While it is of course true that “history did not end in 1965,” id., it is equally true that SL 2013-381 imposes the first meaningful restrictions on voting access since that date — and a comprehensive set of restrictions at that. Due to this fact, and because the legislation came into being literally within days of North Carolina’s release from the preclearance requirements of the Voting Rights Act, that long-ago history bears more heavily here than it might otherwise. Failure to so recognize would risk allowing that troubled history to “pick up where it left off in 1965” to the detriment of African American voters in North Carolina. LWV, 769 F.3d at 242.” – on page 32 of the published federal court documents.

The judges wrote that in the years before the North Carolina law took effect, registration and participation by black voters had been dramatically increasing.

“We recognize that elections have consequences, but winning an election does not empower anyone in any party to engage in purposeful racial discrimination,” the panel said.

This video is another step toward Charlotte becoming a true hub for both movies and music videos.

A worker at the Elmwood Cemetery told us that Pokemon Go players have created problems, “They don’t care. They’re here for one thing and that’s to play some silly game that they’re not getting anything out of.”

He added, since the game launched almost two weeks ago, Pokemon hunters have disrupted funeral services, littered, and trespassed, “Sad thing is about a week ago I was here at 8 o’clock at night, we ran everybody out, within 15 minutes of the cops leaving everybody was back.

vic the chili man best restaurant in charlotteIf you go to Yelp.com and click Best of Yelp: Charlotte, the #1 spot in Charlotte continues to be the Chili Man.

It turns out that the number 1 restaurant in Charlotte isn’t technically even a restaurant at all – it’s a hot dog cart. Vic “The Chili Man”‘s Charlotte-famous hot dogs are so good than many people are willing to wait over an hour for his magical creations.

He’s a regular feature on WJZY’s morning show, and Cam Newton has even given him a few shutouts as his favorite hot dog guy he knows (the Chili Man’s cart sits right outside Cam’s Uptown condo).

Charlotte Stories recently went Uptown to see if his dogs were really worth all the hype (thanks to EndZoneFans for filming):

Not only does Vic make some of the greatest hot dogs in the world, he has also started an incredible charity here in Charlotte to help out families with special needs children.

US Whitewater Center Finally Received Approval To Dump Their Water In The River

0

white water center riverjamState environmental officials have just authorized the U.S. National Whitewater Center to discharge their stagnant water into the Catawba River – water which recently tested positive for the brain-eating amoeba that recently killed a teenager.

Before the discharge, however, the water must undergo an extensive ‘pre-discharge treatment plan’, which will require it to be chlorinated at a level more than ten times that needed to reduce Naegleria fowleri by 99.99%, then be filtered to remove all of the chlorine.

“We’re confident that the extensive monitoring requirements in the discharge plan will protect water quality in the Catawba River. It’s important to remember that the amoeba is naturally occurring in lakes and rivers, but after review by many stakeholders we believe this plan offers the best possible protections for public health and the environment.” commented Tom Reeder of the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality.

Many residents are still worried that some of the bacteria could remain after the discharge due to the fact that the amoeba can cause deadly infections (however rare they may be).

Naegleria Fowleri appears in many warm, freshwater bodies of water during the summer, but infections caused by the amoeba are very rare, since the amoeba has to be forced up the victims nose for an infection to occur. Less than 10 cases have been reported annually in the United States over the last 53 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Almost all such cases are fatal.

Initial symptoms of PAM start about five days after infection, including fever, nausea, headache or vomiting. After the start of the symptoms, the disease progresses rapidly and generally causes death within about five days.

The CDC recommends that when swimming in warmer areas where this infection has been known to occur, swimmers:

• Keep their head above water when taking part in warm freshwater-related activities to avoid having any water go up the nose.

• Wear certified nose clips and ear plugs when swimming in warm fresh water.

• Avoid stagnant fresh water during periods of high water temperature and low water levels.

• Avoid digging in, or stirring up, the sediment in warm fresh water areas.
