Greetings from Cuba: Massive Exhibition Featuring Island Nation Coming to Charlotte

0

Cuba is a place of exceptional biodiversity and cultural richness, and soon, for a limited time, a new bilingual exhibition at Discovery Place Science will offer visitors fresh insights into this island nation just 94 miles from Florida’s shores.

With a close look at Cuba’s unique natural history, including its native species, highly diverse ecosystems and geology, ¡Cuba! also explores Cuba’s history, traditions and contemporary Cuban voices to inspire novel perspectives on this dynamic country.

Organized by the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York, ¡Cuba! will be on view for just 64 days, from November 9 to January 1, 2020.

Technically an archipelago of more than 4,000 islands and keys, Cuba is the largest island nation in the Caribbean—and one of the region’s most ecologically diverse countries.

The exhibition includes cultural artifacts, as well as live animals, specimens and lifelike models representing the island’s distinctive wildlife, from a venomous mammal to the world’s smallest bird. Biodiversity displays were developed by the AMNH in close collaboration with scientists at the Cuban National Museum of Natural History (Museo Nacional de Historia Natural de Cuba, MNHN). Highlights include a re-creation of the Zapata wetlands, home to the endangered Cuban crocodile.

A long, open boulevard evoking the street life one might find in a Cuban city invites visitors to discover Cuban culture through music, games and a variety of interactive experiences. Other highlights include a pair of altars celebrating orisha religion, an Afro-Cuban spiritual tradition also known as Santeria; a gallery showcasing contemporary Cuban art; and a display on the cultivation of one of Cuba’s most famous crops, tobacco. An introductory film about Cuba’s history—including its first people, slavery, the sugar industry, and the 1959 revolution—provides visitors with historical context for contemporary realities.

¡Cuba! also looks at the environmental challenges the country faces, as well as the many effective conservation laws and measures in place to preserve its unique landscape.

As the political and economic relationship between the U.S. and Cuba continues to evolve, the exhibition aims to promote visitor understanding of Cuba’s history as well as its future.

“This exhibition really aims to surprise our visitors with details about Cuba that they’ve never thought about before,” said Catherine Wilson Horne, Discovery Place CEO and president. “Like the creators of ¡Cuba!, our hope is that this exhibition relays an understanding of who the people of Cuba are, how the island nation is biologically unique, how it is connected to the world and what it’s like to live in Cuba today.”

Fiesta planned for opening night

To elevate this Cuban adventure, Discovery Place Science is hosting a special adults-only Taste of Cuba series at the Museum. The latest, Taste of Cuba: Fiesta, will take place on opening night of the exhibition and will feature a traditional Cuban party.

Guests can follow along with a salsa lesson, witness breathtaking performances and even try their hand at a few instruments. The evening’s menu includes the classic Elena Ruz sandwich, Panque de Jamaica, empanaditas de chorizo, pastelitos de guayaba and a plethora of Cuban desserts. Plus, no fiesta would be complete without libations! A cash bar will feature Cuba Libre cocktails, mojitos and Cuban beer.

Tickets are $45 and include admission to the exhibition. Additional Taste of Cuba events themed Sip and Live will occur on November 21 and December 4. For more information about the Taste of Cuba series, click here.

The full Cuba Experience

Throughout the run of ¡Cuba!, Discovery Place Science will also be showing the IMAX® film, CUBA.

Filmed exclusively for IMAX® and giant screen formats, CUBA immerses audiences in the electrifying culture of the island and reveals why Cuba continues to stir the imagination of the world. The film tells the powerful story of a land preserved in time yet poised on the cusp of dramatic change. The nation’s lively culture, its meticulously maintained colonial architecture, and the pristine ecosystems provide a colorful window into the island’s history and heart.

Audiences will be transported across breathtaking landscapes, beneath the ocean’s surface to iridescent reefs, and into streets throbbing with music and dance in the heart of Havana. Through the eyes of Cuban artists, historians and scientists, the film provides an intimate look this vivacious island nation.

North Carolina State University’s Most Famous Buildings

0

North Carolina State University was the pioneer public university in the country. It is also referred to as the University of North Carolina as part of a research triangle that receives funding for land, sea, and space research. If you are looking for expert thesis writing assistance, hire experts who will guarantee quality work that guarantees top grade.

via Wikipedia

The act establishing the university was passed in 1789, and the foundation stone laid in 1793. It was not until 1795 that the first group of students arrived at the campus. It became the first and only public university to award degrees in the 18th century.

The pioneering nature of North Carolina State University meant that it was associated with a lot of myths and legends. These myths have let to appear nicknames to teams and students from the university. They can also be seen in the spirit of alumni who have come through the university. Buildings within the university have also formed a part of the mystical spirit associated with the university.

  • The Old Well

The well was used as the source of water for pupils and workers constructing the university. However, the president of the university visited in 1897; he was not impressed by what he saw over the well. He ordered the building of a new cover that should take the shape of the Temple of Love at Versailles. This cover was to form part of the beautification project for the university. This is one of the signature structures that have stood even today. It is located between the Old East and Old West.

  • Confederate Monument

The establishment of the university was during a time when the confederation was forming. Some of the students formed part of the soldiers fighting in the civil war. The monument was erected to commemorate alumni who joined the war as confederate soldiers. It was installed in 1913 and has inspired all alumni and members of the university community to play an active part in building the American nation. The relief located at the bottom of the monument captures the message perfectly as a woman is seen trying to convince a student to drop his books and join the war.

  • 9/11 Memorial Park

The 9/11 event was a huge blow to American society in the wake of terror attacks around the world. Among the people who died were alumni of North Carolina State University. While leaving the school, the class of 2001 decided to gift the university a memorial park to commemorate the persons who lost their lives in the attack. The park has become a part of the unique history of North Carolina State University.

  • Playmakers Theatre

The Playmaker theatre is one of the most iconic and popular landmarks on the campus. It is also a recognized national monument. It was originally built as a combination of a ballroom and a library. The building was renamed in the 1920s after the university’s drama team, The Playmakers. A portico was placed as a welcome gesture for visitors to the library. The pillars on the outside give it a temple-like appearance. The use of grey to paint gives the walls a granite feel. This theatre is described as a masterpiece because of the talents that have emerged from its nurturing.

The legends who have emerged from the North Carolina State University are countless. Their exploits extend to all economic fields, including aviation, art, sports, and politics, among others. They all point at the strong tradition and pride in the heritage of the North Carolina State University. The university continues to make a major contribution to the research and human resource fields in the USA and the entire world.

Charlotte Officials Meeting Tonight To Plan For High-Speed Rail Line Between Charlotte and Atlanta

0

A proposed high-speed rail line between Charlotte and Atlanta is moving forward tonight with a planned public meeting in Uptown Charlotte.

Tonight’s meeting will include presentations and evaluations by officials from the Federal Railroad Administration, CATS, and other Charlotte leaders.

The new high-speed line would span most of the East Coast, connecting Charlotte with Washington DC, Richmond, and Atlanta.

Once the line is built, a trip from Charlotte to Atlanta will only take about 2 hours (compared to the 4 hours it currently takes on the highway).

Officials are currently evaluating 3 different routes and determining if they want to build new track or use existing lines. The decision will largely be based on total cost, efficiency, and overall environmental impact.

Tonight’s meeting will run from 5:30 pm until 8 pm at Charlotte’s Metrolina Transportation Management Center off Tipton Drive.

NC State Troopers Arrested For Writing Traffic Tickets And Never Giving Them To Drivers

0

Two NC State Troopers have just been arrested for writing numerous traffic tickets and never giving them to drivers.

Christopher Carter and Jason Benson were NC State Troopers working in Harnett County, which is located between Fayetteville and Raleigh, about 100 miles East of Charlotte;

According to a press release from the NC State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), Carter and Benson have both been charged with numerous counts of obstruction of justice, failure to discharge duty, and making false returns of process.

“Most of the citations stemmed from single car accidents or abandoned vehicles, in some cases, the two troopers charged individuals and failed to serve the citations,” the SBI noted in their report. “The victims didn’t know they had been charged, therefore they didn’t show up for their court date(s). As a result, arrest warrants were issued for some while others had their driver’s licenses suspended.”

Benson and Carter have since been removed from the force.

They both turned themselves in to SBI agents yesterday morning.

The SBI is continuing their investigation into ticket-writing in Harnett County.
