Major Recycling Rule Change Starting in 2017 For All Charlotte City Residents

0

new-cardboard-box-law-in-charlotteStarting on January 31st, 2017, the city of Charlotte will have a new rule when it comes to how residents recycle their cardboard.

The city will now be requiring residents to rip, cut or tear cardboard boxes to pieces no bigger than 18 inches by 18 inches.

“You don’t have to get out your measuring tape. It’s a loose guideline. We want to make sure that the cardboard fits loosely into the cart. We will leave a door hanger and we will tell you to properly prepare that item, properly prepare your cardboard and we will collect it next time,” commented Charlotte spokeswoman Erica Robinson.

Erica noted that after the city switched to their new 98-gallon recycling bins, they started receiving complaints that recycling bins weren’t being emptied. The city soon discovered that the cardboard was getting wedged in the larger 98-gallon bins.

If recycling bins are filled with cardboard pieces larger than 18×18 inches after January 31st, sanitation engineers will no longer empty them.

If you don’t want to go through the hassel of ripping up your boxes, you can always get a cat to do it for you:

What do you think of the new rule?

Panther’s Quarterback Cam Newton Just Named The Most Overrated Athlete of 2016

0

Cam newton best nfl team in historyUSA Today has just released a rather depressing ranking for Carolina Panther’s QB Cam Newton.

After this year’s surprisingly bad season, Newton was just named the #1 Most Overrated Athlete of 2016 by USA TODAY Sports.

According to their article:

“Newton is still the best-dancing quarterback of the NFL, maybe the best NFL dancer of all-time. He’s also the most overrated of 2016.

“His critics were muffled in 2015 when Newton dabbed his way to the NFL MVP award and to the Super Bowl, where, oddly enough, his descent began. His sub-par performance in the Super Bowl continued through the 2016 season, during which Newton’s production and the Panthers’ fortunes have plummeted.”

The QB earned a career-low in completion percentage (52.7) and a tie for the lowest total of passing touchdowns in his 2016 season.

Do you still love Cam?

Federal Government Giving SC $65 Million in Federal Aid For Hurricane Matthew Recovery

At least $65 million in federal funds have just been allotted South Carolina cities that were significantly affected by Hurricane Matthew in recent months.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced the assistance for the palmetto state through Community Development Block Grants in a press release this past weekend.

Eligible towns and cities must apply for the grant dollars to cover the buying of flood-damaged property, down payment assistance programs and debris removal costs that aren’t covered by other federal dollars that have already come in to the state.

Hurricane Matthew, which touched down in South Carolina as a Category 1 hurricane, caused nearly $341 million in total public property damage, according to Gov. Nikki Haley’s office.

The grant dollars are part of $1.5 billion HUD announced for six states, including North Carolina, that were affected by severe flooding and hurricanes Hermine and Matthew.

“Our team worked quickly to make sure these funds reach the communities most impacted by a major disaster this year. We’ll do everything we can to support the people and places still struggling to rebuild,” commented HUD Secretary Julián Castro.

North Carolina’s Franklin Graham Chosen To Say Prayer During Trump’s Presidential Inauguration

franklin-graham-trump-prayerNorth Carolina’s Franklin Graham, son of the legendary Evangelist Billy Graham, has just been selected to pray during Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20th at the US Capitol.

The head of the Charlotte-based Billy Graham Evangelistic Association will be joining several other speakers during Trump’s swearing in, including: Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Rabbi Martin Hier, Bishop Wayne T. Jackson, the Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, and Pastor Paula White.

Billy Graham, Franklin’s Charlotte-born father (who’s childhood home is on display at The Billy Graham Library), said the inauguration prayer during Richard Nixon (in 1969), George H.W. Bush (in 1989) and Bill Clinton (in 1993 and 1997).

Franklin Graham has said it once before during George W. Bush’s inauguration (Rick Warren prayed during Obama’s Inauguration).

Franklin’s first inauguration prayer for Bush Jr. in 2001 came under fire by Jews and Muslims when he used the name of Jesus, closing with, “We pray this in the name of the Father, and of the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, and of the Holy Spirit.”

Over the past year, Franklin traveled to every state capitol to hold prayer rallies prior to the election, calling it the ‘Decision America Tour’.

Here’s a video of his October rally in Raleigh:

Lake Norman’s Newest Coffee Shop Is Also A Unique Artist Studio

0

lake-norman-studio-coffeeA new coffee shop recently opened in downtown Huntersville, but instead of just serving locally roasted coffee and fancy lattes, ‘Studio Coffee’ also gives local artists a place to create, display, and sell their work.

Bill Downey opened the new shop about a month ago after a career in human resources. He took the plunge after spending years researching the latest coffee trends and brewing techniques, and what the other coffee shops in the area were missing.

His menu now includes a wide variety of single-origin coffee roasts with pour overs, true cold brews, and everyone’s favorite lattes.

The ‘art studio’ component of ‘Studio Coffee’ consists of Bill’s wife, Donna Downey’s passion for creating globally inspired works of art and teaching others how to also harness their passions. She now organizes regular workshops at the cafe/studio with many other partner artists.

The Downey’s also host a wide range of meet-up type events, live music shows, and poetry nights in what is quickly becoming one of Huntersville’s favorite hangout spots.

Check out their ongoing displays and events on their Facebook page here.
