The 360-degree video was posted this past Friday and it’s already been viewed over 450,000 times;

The Blue Angels are the US Navy’s elite flying squadron who perform epic public demonstrations around the country.

The team is currently based in Pensacola, Florida, and one of its 15 members is from right here in Charlotte. Lt. Garrett Hopkins is a native of Charlotte, and graduated from South Mecklenburg High School in 1997.

Charlotte City Leaders In Talks Over Eliminating Single-Family Zoning Throughout Our City

0

Charlotte City leaders are now in controversial talks about possibly removing single-family zoning throughout the Queen City.

The move would be primarily focused on addressing Charlotte’s continued struggle with racial and economic segregation and our incredibly low upward mobility stats (a recent study ranked Charlotte 50 out of 50 for upward mobility in America).

Last year, Minneapolis became the first city in America to completely eliminate single-family zoning when the Minneapolis City Council voted to remove the restrictive zoning and allow duplexes and triplexes to be built on lots restricted to a single-occupant dwelling. Their primary reasoning for the change was to make it easier to build affordable, denser communities, while also helping to integrate neighborhoods that are still segregated as a result of discriminatory housing practices from decades past.

On the West Coast, the high-cost cities of Seattle and Portland are also now considering rezoning single-family lots or allowing up to 4-unit complexes in single-family neighborhoods. One Oregon lawmaker has even proposed allowing fourplexes on single-family lots in any city in the state that has over 10,000 residents.

In an interview with WFAE, Charlotte’s planning director Taiwo Jaiyeoba, said that Charlotte is now hitting a “breaking point” similar to Minneapolis, with historically racist housing practices leading to record levels of wealth disparities almost entirely defined by zip codes.

“If you’re born in a particular zip code where you don’t have access to full-service grocery stores and don’t have quality of schools or can’t even access a medical facility, or have delayed fire and police response to issues — that was connected to the upward mobility issue for people,” Jaiyeoba commented.

The localized single-family zoning policies from the 40s helped to solidify Charlotte’s predominantly white and wealthy area known as “the wedge” (between I-77 and Independence), and concentrated areas of poverty in the area known as “the crescent,” in the north and western part of our city.

Any final decision to eliminate or change single-family zoning regulations in Charlotte are likely years away.

What are your thoughts on single-family zoning?

What do you think we can do to help improve upward mobility in Charlotte?

Surviving the Move: Expert Tips For A Better Moving Day

0

Change is a constant in life, and sometimes, this could mean a change of residence. There are many reasons why you’d have to move to another city or state. It could be your career or a personal need to start fresh in a new place. No matter what your lofty reasons are, you know that the whole process of moving can get very stressful yet it’s inevitable and necessary. Finding a reliable moving service provider from among the best Charlotte movers can save you from a lot of headaches when the day finally comes. However, there are many things that need to be done before and on the day of the move.

If you want your move to run as smoothly as possible, here are some moving tips to help you get by and survive:

Familiarize Yourself with Your New Place

Pay several visits to the new house or apartment you’re moving into. This way, you can better picture out how you’re going to place your things and which furniture will go to a certain spot. This will also help you determine which things or furniture may no longer fit and will have to be disposed of or sold on your garage sale.

Have a Shortlist of Moving Companies

If you’re single and you only have a few belongings it’s easier to move to a new place, especially if you have your own car. You can just stuff your things inside and drive away. If you don’t have a car, you can always call a friend who has one or rent a van. However, if you’re moving with an entire household and you have kids, you’re going to need a moving company to help you move with less stress. A month before the big day, make a list of reliable movers. If you have to travel across many states or cities, choose those that provide long-distance and cross-country moving services as they’re more equipped for long moving distances. Make sure to make calls and choose the one that you find most suitable.

Review Your Moving Company Contract

Although there’s a great possibility that things will get damaged during the move, it’s best to review your moving provider’s contract in case they stipulated who gets to pay for it. You can have a better move when you know that the moving company can assure that no damages or loss happens to your things along the way. However, you can even breathe easier when you know that even when the unfavorable event happens, you’ll get compensated for it.

Pack Only What’s Necessary

Moving loads of boxes is one of the most stressful parts of moving. You may not be doing the heavy lifting, but you’ll have to do the packing and the monitoring of all the items you’ve put in there. If you’re packing everything, chances are you’re bringing some unnecessary things with you. To minimize the number of things to bring during your move, you have to get rid of the old and unnecessary stuff. You can even earn money from these things by selling them in a garage sale and use the money to buy new things in your new place.

Label Your Boxes Properly

You can’t just stuff your things into any box. You have to make sure that they are well organized, and the boxes are properly labeled. Also, pay attention to things that are easily breakable and make sure they’re reinforced with paper or bubble wrap to prevent it from breaking. Label these fragile things as well so movers can easily recognize them and place them in a secure spot. This will also save you a lot of time once you take them out of the boxes because you’ll know where those things need to be placed.

Care for Your Kids and Pets

It can be fun for kids to help pack some things inside the boxes, but when the moving day comes, it’s best if you keep them away from the stress. Besides, you’ll be busy running around supervising the movers. You wouldn’t want your kids and your pets playing around, causing unnecessary attention. Your best option is to have them stay at a relative’s house during this day. If not, have a friend or relative come over and watch over them.

Have a Tool Box Ready

Professional movers always have their tools ready for any light fixes and installations. However, it’s always a good thing to be prepared. Have your toolbox ready in case the movers need an extra hand or tool. Be sure you have a screwdriver, box cutter, and wrench inside your toolbox.

Final Reminders

Moving to a new place will always entail some stress. The tips mentioned above can help lessen the impact of the stress. However, the best way to prepare yourself for that big moving day is to practice how to keep your cool and be cooperative with your movers. After all, you’ve done a thorough assessment of your service provider so you have to trust that they can deliver quality service as promised.

Is Virtual Reality the Future of Online Dating?

0

Online dating has existed for a long time now. But for most of the part, it doesn’t allow you to meet the person you hit a match with until you two decide to go out. Virtual reality can change this concept of online dating.

The advent of VR

VR has come of age, and experts are trying to combine online dating and virtual reality to see how it can transform the dating experience. This version of dating will not limit the users to only sifting through the photos of their partners through the dating app or website; it will also allow you to spend quality time in a virtual space with your love interest.

You will not be there with the other person physically, but both of you can see what the other is doing. Merely chatting on the app and not meeting the person doesn’t always foster a romantic vibe, but this technology can bring the dating site users closer to their matches. Enrolling to a program that offers a unique relationship program will enhance the chance to get the woman you ever dreams. The Girlfriend Activation System will develop and boost your inner-self growth to aid you better and make awesome meaningful ways to have a long term relationship.

Immersive dating

3D in movies has already tried to capitalize on VR, and it is time now for dating apps to create a similar experience for the users. With the dating experience getting more immersive than ever, it no longer matters whether you’re living half a world away from Paris because LOveSita and other dating apps already utilize the latest in technology to remove the traditional barriers of distance and location.

The concept is unique. Users of the dating website will stay in their respective places, but when they connect to their match using VR technology, they will be able to see their partner’s avatar through the VR headset. This concept involves scanning the body of the users while they are signing in to the website. It allows the matches to shake hands in VR, touch each other in the virtual space, and even hug one another. And for those of you looking for trusted dating sites, be sure to check out the reviews of dating apps like Eharmony and Match.

Can VR change the experience of online dating?

Experts from the University of Illinois and the West Virginia University conducted a study where they collated data of the success of first physical dates after couples meet online. Their report showed a significant success rate, but there were cases where things did not work out as couples did not find each other attractive enough in spite of favorable online interactions. They also informed that the more the couples communicate before the meeting, the more chances they can succeed after the first date.

But they believe that the introduction of VR and its immersive nature can make this process more successful. It will offer a more personal experience to the dating app users where they will already know how the other person looks before their first meeting. This can save the embarrassment of being stood out in a cafĂ© or the heartbreak of not being “good enough.”

What VR is trying to incorporate in the online dating industry is to lift the limitation of not meeting your match immediately. Apart from checking out the pictures in his/her profile, this technology will also allow you to meet your match in a virtual environment and interact just like you would during a normal date in person.

13-Year-Old From Pineville Named As One of America’s Top 10 Youth Volunteers of 2019

For community service initiatives that range from leading a youth mental health initiative to collecting books for kids across the country, 10 students were named America’s top youth volunteers of 2019 by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a national program sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

These National Honorees, named during the program’s 24th annual national award ceremony at Union Station’s East Hall, range in age from 11 to 17. They were selected first from a field of more than 29,000 middle level and high school youth volunteers nationwide, and then from 102 State Honorees, based on their initiative, effort, impact, and the personal growth demonstrated in the course of their volunteer service. The National Honorees each received $5,000 personal awards, engraved gold medallions, crystal trophies for their schools, and $5,000 grants from The Prudential Foundation for charities of their choice.

The ceremony was part of a four-day celebration that brought each state’s top two youth volunteers of 2019 to Washington, D.C., for sightseeing and special recognition events. These State Honorees – one middle level and one high school student from each state and the District of Columbia – were personally congratulated by award-winning actress Viola Davis last night at a gala dinner reception at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. Each State Honoree received a $1,000 award.

These are the 10 National Honorees named:

Alexander Fultz, 13, of Pineville, North Carolina, an eighth-grader at Metrolina Regional Scholars Academy, created a nonprofit organization that has donated thousands of toys and clothing items to hospitals in several states to brighten the days of hospitalized patients.

Samaia A. Goodrich, 11, of Syracuse, New York, a sixth-grader at Expeditionary Learning Middle School, organizes projects in her community to encourage inner-city youth to make a difference, including an effort to raise money to buy Christmas presents, clothes and household goods for families who moved from Puerto Rico to Syracuse after Hurricane Maria devastated their homeland.

Aja Capel, 15, of Urbana, Illinois, a member of Champaign County 4-H and a junior at Urbana High School, serves as the lead robotics instructor at a local science museum and has launched an initiative to give minority students more opportunities to learn about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Grace Beal, 17, of New Castle, Pennsylvania, a junior at Neshannock Senior High School, organized an annual basketball-based fundraising event that has raised more than $100,000 since 2014 for Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, where her sister was treated before she died of congenital heart failure.

Caleb Oh, 14, of Gambrills, Maryland, an eighth-grader at Crofton Middle School, has spent more than 1,000 hours volunteering in many ways over the past seven years to aid people who are homeless, hungry or have other needs.

Hannah Karanick, 13, of Anaheim, California, an eighth-grader at Orangeview Junior High School, established a “closet” at her former elementary school that provides new clothing, laundry products, toiletries, quilts and school supplies to students there whose families can’t afford to buy such necessities.

Caragan Olles, 16, of De Pere, Wisconsin, a junior at Notre Dame Academy, co-founded a nonprofit organization in 2013 that has raised more than $160,000 to provide special tutoring for students with dyslexia, create dyslexia resource centers in three public library systems, and educate teachers and parents about this learning disability.

Vance Tomasi, 13, of Tampa, Florida, a seventh-grader at Farnell Middle School, has worked with a friend to collect and donate more than 90,000 books to families, schools, group homes, hospitals and libraries over the past two years.

Allison Tu, 17, of Louisville, Kentucky, a senior at duPont Manual High School, launched a youth-driven initiative to raise awareness of student mental health issues and find ways to combat the alarmingly high rates of depression, anxiety and suicide among young people in Kentucky.

Joseph Voynik, 17, of Flowood, Mississippi, a senior at Jackson Preparatory School, worked for four years and raised more than $600,000 to construct a fully accessible baseball field so that children with disabilities could experience the joy of playing America’s national pastime.

“We’re impressed and inspired by the way these honorees have identified problems facing their communities and stepped up to the challenge to make a difference,” said Charles Lowrey, chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial, Inc. “It’s a privilege to celebrate their leadership and compassion, and we look forward to seeing the great things they accomplish in the future.”

“These students have not only done important work in support of people in need – they’ve also shown their peers that young people can, and do, create meaningful change,” said Christine Handy, president of NASSP. “We commend each of these young volunteers for all they’ve contributed to their communities.”

The distinguished selection committee that chose the National Honorees was chaired by Lowrey and included Handy of NASSP; Andrea Bastiani Archibald, chief girl and family engagement officer for Girl Scouts of the USA; Heidi Brasher, senior director of product line cohorts, strategy and innovation at YMCA of the USA; Brian Coleman, department chair for the Jones College Prep counseling team in Chicago, Illinois and the American School Counselor Association’s 2019 National School Counselor of the Year; Larissa Hatch, national youth engagement associate with the American Red Cross; Natalye Paquin, president and chief executive officer of Points of Light; Tony Shivers, a member representative with the National PTA Board of Directors; Rhonda Taylor, director of partnerships and program engagement for the Corporation for National and Community Service; Will Waidelich, executive director of the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE); and two 2018 National Honorees: Michelle Qin, a senior at Dos Pueblos High School in Santa Barbara, California, and Helena Zimmerman, a senior at Rye Country Day School in Rye, New York.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards was created in 1995 to identify and recognize young people for outstanding volunteer service – and, in so doing, inspire others to volunteer, too. In the past 24 years, the program has honored more than 125,000 young volunteers at the local, state and national level.
