York County Announces Winners 1st Quarter Artist Grants
The Arts Council of York County is pleased to announce the allocation of Small Grant awards for the fourth quarter of the 2019-2020 fiscal year. Small Grants are available to individual artists, non-profit organizations, teachers and schools throughout York County. These grants are designed to support specific arts activities that promote the individual artist’s professional development or career advancement and/or to support a wide variety of quality arts projects and programs that promote excellence in arts disciplines and make such disciplines accessible for general community-wide audiences.
Organizations and individual artists residing in York County, SC may request up to $1,000 per grant and may receive up to two grants each calendar year.
Recipients include:
Adult Enrichment Centers | $1,000
Mural | “We Grow Kindness”
The Adult Enrichment Centers are creating a public mural by artist Oscar Soto on the west side of the Rock Hill Center, located at 359 Park Avenue, Rock Hill, SC. The building, formally Henson’s Grocery Store, is the Adult Enrichment Centers’ largest Adult Day Health Center, known to many as Parke Avenue Day Care. Built of cinder block with a metal front façade, the building needs improvements to contribute to the curb appeal and neighborhood culture. An extensive refresh of the building began in May 2018 to address deferred maintenance and to improve the aesthetics for the 85-90 members who are enrolled for care. All the members are adults with developmental, intellectual, or physical disabilities, or adults who are aging with multiple chronic health conditions.
Soto’s mural, We Grow Kindness, will be centered on the motifs of seeds and seasonal growth along with layers of text sourced from AEC’s clients, employees, and extended community. The design concept is inspired by and aligned with the AEC logo that includes growth and development, represented by bright green leaves. This mural will create a welcoming, approachable environment for members and visitors to the facility. Old Town Association | $600
Public Art Project | Old Town Frogs
The Old Town Association hid 10 cement frogs created by Winthrop University student, Kasey Elizabeth Sears throughout the downtown area in early 2018. Inspired by the Come-See-Me Festival’s Glen the Frog by Vernon Grant, each frog is based on an existing species of frog, ranging from a 12-inch Goliath Frog to a 2-inch Tree Frog. This Small Grant will allow the Old Town Association to coat the existing frogs in bronze, making them permanent fixtures in Old Town Rock Hill.   | https://www.onlyinoldtown.com/
Rock Hill Community Theatre | $900
Bye, Bye Birdie
The Rock Hill Community Theatre presents Bye Bye Birdie, June 2 – 29 and July 5 – 6, directed by Stephanie Daniels, featuring a cast of teens. Though this story was written six decades ago, today’s youth can still identify with the teenage angst and idealism of the period. Teen idol Conrad Birdie has been drafted into the US Army, and his manager’s girlfriend stages a publicity stunt, selecting one lucky girl to be serenaded and then kissed as the whole country watches the event on The Ed Sullivan Show! Dads and boyfriends are disturbed by the effect that Conrad’s hip-thrusting style has on their loved ones. This show is a lighthearted way to look at the struggles we all have had as teens and as the parents of teens.

J. Michael Simpson | $350
Microphones & Sound Mixer
J. Michael Simpson has been creating experimental videos based on events in nature since 2005. These works typically include sounds like the rush of a whitewater river or the clap of a thunderstorm. The built-in microphone of the camera cannot capture the complexity of sounds he seeks to include in his work. The microphones and sound mixer that Simpson will purchase using the funds from this Small Grant will be used to record sounds in nature for his current project, The Whether Station. iMAGINE STEAM Festival
The iMAGINE STEAM Festival, fueled by Comporium, is designed to showcase career pathways in science, technology, arts, engineering, and math (STEAM) through fun, hands-on learning and stage performances. The purpose of this free street festival is to ignite the interest of families across York, Chester, and Lancaster counties in STEAM learning and careers. For the 2nd year, the festival will occur in Old Town Rock Hill around Fountain Park. Women’s Art Initiative | $1,000
“Technology: Past, Present, and Future” Mosaic Sculpture
The Women’s Art Initiative has contracted with Carrie Gault to create an outdoor mosaic sculpture on Elk Avenue, in front of the Comporium Telephone Museum. The design will depict technology for the past, present, and future.
This work of art is composed of several figures standing around gazing at a glowing sphere. Made with fiber optics, the sphere represents all the potential held in the future of technology. The sphere is held by a teacher who is surrounded by her students who represent different technological eras. The mosaics adorning the figures will include information and imagery of Rock Hill from each time period they represent. Total Allocations This Quarter: $4,350

The next deadline is Sunday, September 1, 2019 at 5 PM for programs occurring October, November, and/or December of 2019. Prospective applicants MUST discuss the proposed project with the Executive Director at least 10 days in advance of the application deadline date. Should the deadline fall on a holiday or weekend, grant applications are due the last business day prior to the deadline.
This Small Grants program is funded in part by the South Carolina Arts Commission (which receives funding from the National Endowment for the Arts), and the John and Susan Bennett Memorial Arts Fund of the Coastal Carolina Community Foundation, and Comporium Communications.

NC Gun Shop Targets 4 Congresswomen In Controversial New Billboard

A small gun store in North Carolina is coming under fire after putting up a controversial billboard that features an image of the 4 congresswomen President Trump has been attacking and states;

“The 4 Horesemen are Idiots. Signed, the Deplorables. Cherokee Guns”

They posted a picture of the billboard and told their followers to share it;

After receiving a steady stream of feedback, mostly negative, the shop doubled down on the message.

They’ve now printed bumper stickers with the same image on it and told their followers to “eat a piece of bacon…tell us you’re voting for Trump in 2020…then get your limited edition bumper sticker!!”

The gun shop sits in the heart of the smokey mountains in Murphy, NC, about 200 miles east of Charlotte;

President Trump recently attacked the Congresswoman featured on the Billboard in a Tweet where he told the 4 ethnic minority American congresswomen to “go back” (which congress has since officially condemned).

All 4 of the women who Trump told to “go back” to “countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe” are US citizens, and 3 of them were born in and have always lived in the United States. 1 of the 4 women, Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar, was born in Somalia and became a U.S. citizen as a teenager.

Ever since President Trump made the statement, insults, attacks, and threats against them have exponentially increased.

Panthers Are Now Worth $2.3 Billion – Ranked Among The Most Valuable Teams In The World

Forbes recently listed the Carolina Panthers among The World’s 50 Most Valuable Sports Teams. We are now rank as the #38 most valuable sports franchise in the world.

David Tepper’s $2.3 billion organization is now tied with the Houston Rockets and  theNew York Mets at #38 and we’re more valuable than the Los Angeles Chargers (#41), Arsenal (#42), and the Dallas Mavericks (#43).

According to Forbes, “The cutoff to rank among the world’s 50 most valuable sports teams is $2.075 billion, up $125 million from last year and $1.2 billion from five years ago. The values of sports teams have skyrocketed on the backs of ballooning media rights deals and more owner-friendly collective bargaining agreements that restrain player costs.”

We still have quite a ways to go before reaching the #1 Dallas Cowboys, valued at $5 billion, or the #2 Yankees, valued at $4.6 billion, but if our growth rate keeps up, it may not be long before we reach the top.

Police Asking For Help In Finding Missing Charlotte Teenager

The CMPD is now asking for the public’s help in finding a missing Charlotte teenager who was last seen on Tuesday.

19-year-old Itati Romero Ambrosio left her home on Tuesday night at around 10pm, according to her family. When she did not return home the next morning, her family called all of her friends and when no one recalled seeing her, they called the police.

Officers now believe that Itati may be traveling with Emanuel Ambrocio-Cruz in a 4-door dark grey Mitsubishi Raider pickup truck, with North Carolina license plate number FCD-6115.

Itati is described as being a 135lb, 5′ 3″ Hispanic female with long dark brown hair. She was last seen wearing full-length grey leggings and brown boots.

City of Tega Cay Restores Monument After Controversy Over The Word “Lord”

Tega Cay city leaders have just decided to restore a controversial monument after passing a motion earlier in the week to have it removed.

In a statement sent out yesterday, the town stated:

“After careful consideration and much conversation with people on both sides of the discussion, City Council has made the decision that the Police Officer’s Prayer will be restored to its original condition and returned to the Fallen Officers’ Memorial located at the new police station.  We want to thank everyone for voicing your opinion, as it’s not always easy to do so on such a sensitive subject.”

When the monument to fallen police officers was built, it featured several mentions of the word “Lord”. After several complaints, the city decided to remove the word from the monument. More complaints then poured in over the removal of the word.

Tega Cay City Manager Charlie Funderburk sent out the following statement this past Monday about the decision to remove the monument:

“The City of Tega Cay and our Police Department understand that not everyone agrees with the religious references that were on the monument located in the Fallen Officers Memorial at our Police Station. We also understand that just as many people are not in agreement that we have removed those references. There was never any intent to hold any group in higher regard than another. This monument was modeled after other monuments that appear across the country at various levels of government honoring law enforcement officers, military veterans and others whose duty is to protect and serve. Be that as it may, after seeking legal advice on the matter and after discussing it at length with City Council, we have made the decision to remove those references. We are public servants and want to make certain that all members of the public, regardless of what their religious beliefs may or may not be, understand that we are here to serve everyone. They will be welcomed into our facilities, whether it be the Police Station or City Hall, they will be treated fairly and with the respect they are owed by us. As the two sides of this issue continue to debate their stance we hope they will do so civilly and respectfully.”

Local Congressman Ralph Norman disagreed with the decision and even posted a Facebook video in which he stated;

“You know the last time I checked, it was ‘one nation under God,’ to have this scratched out is sad, to say the least. That’s why we’re fighting in Washington, D.C. to put God back in public to buildings like this to put God back in our public schools.”

After this congressman’s video and hundreds of other angry responses to Tega Cay leaders, they’ve now decided that the monument will be restored with it’s origin language.

Charlotte to Host Inaugural Tennis Tournament in August

The Charlotte Amateur Tennis Championship will hit the Queen City for the first time August 16 – 18 at the Queens University Tennis Complex at Marion Diehl Recreation Center and the Jeff Adams Tennis Center. Registration is currently open and all levels of play are welcome.

The Charlotte Amateur Tennis Tournament is presented by Atrium Health and will benefit the Cynthia Graham Hurd Foundation.   The event has been sanctioned by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and registration is being handled directly via the organization’s website at TennisLink.USTA.com.  The tournament ID number is 700125019 and should be entered when registering. “Bringing a tournament of this caliber to Charlotte provides an opportunity for localtennis players to showcase their talent and creates an environment that embraces and engages the community,” said Malcolm Graham, Tournament Director. “The tournament will feature singles, doubles, mixed doubles and wheelchair matches.  The entire community is invited and all proceeds will benefit the Cynthia Graham Hurd Foundation.”

As North Carolina continues to elevate its wine growing pedigree (we were recently ranked as the 7th best up-and-coming wine region in North America), a massive new Kings Mountain vineyard just announced plans to open later this summer.

Veronét Vineyards & Winery is now putting the finish touches on their sprawling 6,300 square-foot tasting room and wine cellar with attached patio. 

“This announcement is a culmination of years’ worth of hard work and vision, and we cannot wait to share our stunning property with the world!” said Monique Sullivan, Founder & Managing Partner of Veronét. “We are excited to offer not only delicious wines, but a variety of fun experiences from wine dinners to pairing classes that will provide people with opportunities to escape the day-to-day and get more in touch with all aspects of wine from grape-growing to winemaking,” Sullivan continued. “We have worked hard to create a retreat where anyone can relax, take in beautiful views, and enjoy themselves through a range of offerings that will include food, beer, and non-wine beverage options as well.”

In addition to the stunning views of Crowders Mountain & The Pinnacle, the first vineyard & winery to come to Kings Mountain will also offer an electric car charging station, LED lighting throughout, drought tolerant landscaping and dry-farming practices for water conservation and will eventually host walking and biking trails on the property. The vineyards, set with southern exposure and home to constant south-westerly winds, are planted on a gentle slope and accented by towering pines, Crowders Mountain, and The Pinnacle. The nearly 5 acres of plantings are made up of Cabernet Franc, Viognier, and Chambourcin vines. The Sullivan family is excited to welcome their first estate harvest in the fall of 2020, and currently works tirelessly to produce the healthies vines while maintaining minimal impact on the land through a reduced use of chemicals and a variety of manual processes. “By using more environmentally friendly controls we know we are helping to protect our vineyard for future generations,” explained Monique. “You may see a few more weeds in our vineyard compared to others, but we feel that is a small price to pay to preserve the integrity of the land.”

The property & winery will initially be open only on Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays for guests to sample a selection of eight wines that the family sourced through vineyard & winery partnerships throughout the United States, allowing them to focus on cultivating their first estate-produced vintages in 2021. In addition to wine, the winery will host a rotating tap for local beers, a seasonal menu featuring charcuterie & cheese boards, and an array of non-alcoholic beverages including Pure Intentions Cold Brew coffee and Birch Fine Teas. The winery associates will offer guided tastings, as well as vineyard tours when the weather permits. In depth tastings, special food pairing events, and group wine classes will be led by Monique, who holds  Level 3 Certification in Wines from the London-based Wine & Spirits Education Trust.

6,300 SqFt Greenway Gateway Hosting Grand Opening Festivities This Weekend

The Anne Springs Close Greenway will officially open its new welcome center, named the Greenway Gateway, on Saturday, July 27, at 7a.m. The 6,300-square-foot facility will serve to inform and orient visitors and serve as a hub for activities at the 2,100-acre nature preserve and outdoor recreation site established in 1995.

The new facility provides a “front door” that will welcome first time visitors and returning guests alike, serving as a hub for outdoor activities and recreation. It is located at the Greenway’s main entrance off of US Highway 21 Bypass at Lake Haigler Drive in Fort Mill, SC. A food and beverage service, the Gateway Canteen, will also be open daily and begin operations this Saturday at 7am.

It will provide information and orientation for first-time visitors, and a place where members and visitors can gather to relax and enjoy amenities before or after their activities on the Greenway. 24 Hours of Booty is back for the 18th annual 24-hour event on the Booty Loop in Charlotte!

The 3-mile Booty Loop runs through Myers Park Neighborhood. The community event hosts over 1,200 riders and 200 walkers who raise funds for Levine Cancer Institute, Levine Children’s Hospital, The LIVESTRONG Foundation, and Queens University of Charlotte.

#9 WWE NXT

Sunday night starting at 5pm in Concord, some of the biggest names in Wrestling will be performing live at the Cabarrus Arena.

WWE NXT is a reformatted version of WWE’s FCW (Florida Championship Wrestling). During the first five seasons, rookie wrestlers were paired with professional wrestlers to develop their performance skills and characters.

Examples of challenges include keg carrying, 30-second promos and assault courses.

Sublime the band may be no longer, but the spirit of Sublime lives on thanks to Sublime with Rome. Former Sublime member Eric Wilson founded this reggae band in 2009, and Sublime with Rome has been an active force in the reggae/alt-rock scene ever since.
