Raleigh, Durham, and Boone Now Requiring Face Masks – Charlotte Might Be Next

0

The Mayor of Raleigh has just issued an emergency proclamation to require residents and visitors to wear face masks while in city limits.

The new requirements will go into effect on Friday, June 19th starting at 4pm.

The Mayor’s official proclamation reads:

“All persons who are present within the jurisdiction of the City of Raleigh are required to wear a clean face covering any time they are, or will be, in contact with other people who are not household members in public or private spaces where it is not possible to maintain social distance or where recommended social distancing practices are not being followed. These spaces include grocery stores, pharmacies, business locations, parking lots, sidewalks, and public transit. While wearing the face covering, it is essential to still maintain social distance insofar as possible since social distancing is the best defense against the spread of the COVID-19.

A face covering is a material that covers the nose and mouth. It can be secured to the head with ties or straps or simply wrapped around the lower face. It can be made of a variety of materials, such as cotton, silk, or linen. A cloth face covering may be factory-made or sewn by hand or can be improvised from household items such as scarfs, T-shirts, sweatshirts, or towels. Social distance, as referenced within this declaration, shall mean the current parameters established by the Governor by Executive Order and by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, including as such parameters may be amended in the future.

Acceptable, reusable face covering options for the general public include: bandanas, neck gaiters, homemade face coverings, scarves, or tightly woven fabric such as cotton !-shirts and some types of towels. It is not required to wear face coverings during individual exercise outdoors, or while walking or exercising with other people from the same household, as long as social distance from others is maintained.

All restaurant, personal care, grooming, tattoo, and retail employees and staff shall wear a face covering while on duty. It is recommended that all businesses require customers to wear a face covering while inside the business Face coverings are not required:

  • For people whose religious beliefs prevent them from wearing a face covering.
  • For those who cannot wear a face covering due to a medical or behavioral condition.
  • For children under 12 years old.
  • For restaurant patrons while they are dining.
  • In private, individual offices.
  • When complying with directions of law enforcement officers.
  • In settings where it is not practical or feasible to wear a face covering, including when obtaining or rendering goods or services, such as the receipt of dental services or while swimming.
  • While with members of a family or the same household.”

When the new requirement takes effect, Raleigh will be joining North Carolina’s City of Durham and Orange County currently with similar requirements.

Starting this weekend, Boone, NC will also implement a similar measure:

Earlier this week on Tuesday, Mecklenburg’s County Commissioner County Commissioner Trevor Fuller pushed for a similar requirement in Charlotte, but he would have to gain the support of the mayors of Charlotte and the 6 other towns in our county for the measure to pass.

In response to all the new requirements, a large group called “Reopen NC” started a “Burn Your Mask” challenge on social media.

What do you think about face mask requirements?

CBD Oil For Anxiety: True or False?

0

In a brain imaging study, a single 400 mg dose of CBD reduced anxiety in 10 people with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) works by reducing blood flow to part of the limbic system, which is often overactive in this type of disorder. The cannabinoid increased blood flow to another region that is important for cognition and motivation (the posterior cortex). More at https://biomdplus.com/cbd-oil-for-anxiety/

Depression

According to studies conducted on mice, CBD has an antidepressant effect. They found that CBD was as fast, potent, and long-lasting as the standard antidepressant. Reference: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2823358/

It appears that, with more research, the benefits of CBD may extend to individuals with different types of anxiety including panic attacks.

Consumers Should Check the Source of the CBD Oil

Look for a brand that is using “cannabidiol-rich” hemp.

There’s a big difference between CBD that comes from industrial hemp (the kind used for protein powders, clothing, and milk) and the hemp that is specifically grown to produce high-quality CBD products. You want to look for a brand that is using “can- nabidiol-rich” hemp. Otherwise, you risk purchasing a supplement that sounds effective but doesn’t deliver results. Plus, industrial hemp often lacks essential terpenes and secondary cannabinoids. While in searches for CBD products you should dig deep not only  into  the ingredients of the product but also the brand that it represents. For instance, here https://www.drganja.com/ you can find the list of CBD products with the full description readily available.

Look for a brand that is using “cannabidiol-rich” hemp.

Some brands try to save money by using toxic solvents that are dangerous to your health — such as propane, hexane, pentane and butane to use in your crystal smoking pipe.

This is the “cheap and easy” extraction process, but it’s definitely not the kind of CBD you want. Instead, the more trustworthy brands are using organic, pharmaceutical-grade ethanol to process the CBD. The ethanol, which is a safe grain alcohol, is used to remove toxins and extra residue from the hemp. There’s a big difference between CBD that comes from industrial hemp (the kind used for protein powders, clothing, and milk) and the hemp that is specifically grown to produce high-quality CBD products.

This extraction process tends to produce the highest amount of cannabinoids and is considered to be the safest method of extracting that precious CBD.

To take it one step further, a few brands go above and beyond by using supercritical CO2 extraction. It sounds technical (and it is), but it’s basically using carbon dioxide under high pressure in an extremely cold environment to ensure the absolute purest form of CBD.

This CO2 extraction requires a lot of expensive, com- plex equipment, so most companies pass it up. But if you can find an affordable brand that invests in the technology, it is definitely worth it.

The final product contains fewer contaminants and a purer CBD oil. Win-win.

WARNING

Be aware that some brands try to save money by using toxic solvents that are dangerous to your health — such as propane, hexane, pen- tane and butane. Please read all label carefully.

CBD Oil Lab Results

The CBD industry is still fairly young, so regulation is fairly limited. Companies should provide third-party lab test results to purity and safety.

As with any new industry, brand flood the market as quickly as possible. Some brands have thrown together a website, found a low-cost manufacturer, and started selling to eager buyers.

THIRD-PARTY TESTING: Make sure the CBD you are purchasing is backed by third-party testing. There is no way of confirming what’s in that product or if it’s safe to use without a lab report / Certificate of Analysis (COA). Only purchase from companies who have invested in unbiased testing from a third-party lab.

These independent labs exist to make sure that CBD oil is what it claims to be. They test for levels of CBD, THC, and ensure the product is free from harmful chemicals and impurities. PaydayChampion is here to help you in every way that we can if you find yourself in a situation where you need financial assistance for your medical care.

CONCERNED ABOUT PESTICIDES?

THC CONTENT: In the cannabis family, hemp is naturally extremely in THC and higher in CBD oil than its sibling, mar- ijuana. The way the law is written in the 2018 farm bill is that in order to be classified as hemp and legal to sell, a

It’s important to know whether or not the product contains harmful pesticides, fertilizers, growth hormones, or herbicides

hemp plant must contain less than 0.3% THC by volume.

that could induce negative side

Which means, CBD derived from hemp is no longer considered illegal by the DEA as long as it contains less than 0.3% THC. However, CBD derived from marijuana is still not legal on the federal level, nor are CBD oil products containing more than 0.3% THC.

effects. If the lab report shows any levels of these substances, you should give the product a “fail” status right away. How- ever, once the report confirms that your CBD oil is pesticide free, you can be sure it comes from pesticide-free grown hemp.

CBD Oil and Analgesic effects

Many studies suggest that cannabinoids may be a new class of “painkillers,” helping millions of people suffering from chronic pain. We have cannabinoid receptors throughout our bodies, but the CB1 type is very densely scattered along pathways responsible for brain, spine, and nerve pain. The second type, CB2, is more important for the immune system and acts on inflammation. Therefore, our internal cannabinoids and CBD can act on both of these pathways and balance pain and inflammation.

In an extensive analysis of 766 participants, cannabinoids strongly and safely reduced various types of chronic pain (pain from neuropathy, arthritis, fibromyalgia, HIV, and multiple sclerosis).

Another study with nearly 2,000 participants showed that the benefits of using cannabis-based drugs to fight pain outweigh any risks.

Moreover, the combination of CBD and THC reduced pain in several studies of patients with multiple sclerosis and chronic pain (66 and 189 participants, respectively). CBD was

The combination of CBD and THC offers promising results for postoperative and chronic pain, as well as pain related to cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and neuropathy. However, it should be noted that by using only CBD, we still see benefits in comparison to synthetic cannabinoids and even to using it with THC because it is not a psychoactive substance. Many people want to avoid THC’s potential side-effects of paranoia and drowsiness.

Scientists are trying to figure out, what does CBD feel like? CBD reduces pain in a different way than opioids do, though both substances alleviate it. The study showed that CBD oil did not affect the opioid pathways in mice. However, CBD reduced both chronic inflammation and neuropathic pain in rodents. Significantly, neither CBD nor THC appears to cause a long-term increase in tolerance (after two years), unlike opioids and most other painkillers, which require higher and higher doses to continue to work.

CBD Oil Dosage

CBD dosage may vary, but it usually ranges from 100 mg to even 3 g per day, depending on the target health problem.

For protecting the brain (e.g., Alzheimer’s disease), reducing inflammation, and addressing muscle spasms (multiple sclerosis), doses of 100 to 600 mg of CBD have been used in clinical trials. In some studies, patients took as much CBD oil as they needed to experience a reduction in pain or relief of muscle tone.

A dose of up to 800 mg per day was used to treat psychosis and schizophrenia.

Black North Carolinians Continue to Bear Brunt of Coronavirus Pandemic

0

A newly updated report released by Piedmont Rising today finds that while Black North Carolinians account for 21% of the state’s population, they constitute 27% of North Carolina’s confirmed cases, and are experiencing worse health outcomes from the coronavirus, including accounting for 33% of the COVID-19 death toll in the state.

Key findings include:

  • In North Carolina, where the latest Census records show that Black residents make up 21.4 percent of the population, while 27 percent of the confirmed cases of coronavirus in North Carolina are from Black residents, and 33 percent of deaths from coronavirus in North Carolina have been Black residents;
  • On average, one-in-four people living in the ten counties in North Carolina with the highest percentage of Black residents report being in poor or fair health.
  • Medicaid expansion would help reduce racial inequalities in health insurance rates in North Carolina;
  • Research shows that the health of Black Americans is directly and adversely impacted by consistent exposure to instances of racial inequities in policing and violence against Black communities by law enforcement;
  • The American Medical Association recommends mandating the “reporting of legal intervention deaths and law enforcement officer homicides to public health agencies” as a step toward understanding police brutality as an affront against the overall health of Black Americans.

“It’s unacceptable that Black North Carolinians are bearing the brunt of this pandemic,” said Piedmont Rising Executive Director Casey Wilkinson. “Recent policy decisions, especially the decision not to expand Medicaid, play a critical role in the disparate health outcomes along racial lines. Even more catastrophic would be the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, which could happen through a lawsuit the U.S. Supreme Court will take up as soon as this fall. Elected leaders should make clear that they oppose this lawsuit that would only exacerbate the inequities of our health care system and put desperately needed care out of reach for too many.”

It All Started in the Attic – Charlotte Sock Manufacturer Celebrates 10 Years

0

Boardroom Socks, a Charlotte-based manufacturer of premium men’s socks, is celebrating its 10th year in business. The family business was started in 2010 by husband and wife duo Mike and Carol James. After witnessing the closure of mills across the state, the couple sought to create a locally-made product line that represented North Carolina’s rich sock-making traditions.

In its early years, orders were packed and shipped from the James’ attic, with each pair of socks passing through Carol’s hands. While orders are no longer shipped from the James family’s home, the business has remained true to its roots: Mike and Carol’s son Nathan has joined the company and the socks continue to be produced in North Carolina.

Of the company’s tenth anniversary, Boardroom Socks President Nathan James said, “Achieving this milestone means a great deal to our family and our team. When my parents first started Boardroom Socks out of our attic, I thought they were a little crazy. At one point, we had 15,000 pairs of socks in our house! While we are still a small business, we are proud to be able to touch dozens of local jobs in our area and are excited for what the next decade has in store.”

Now in its tenth year, the company is planning to add a new line of casual socks while continuing to release additional colors and patterns in its dress sock offerings.

‘Reopen NC’ Group Starts New Viral Social Media Challenge – “Burn Your Mask Challenge”

0

A massive group of self proclaimed “North Carolina Patriots” have just issued a new social media challenge to all residents our state asking people to burn their masks and using the hashtag #burnyourmaskchallenge.

This past Monday, NC Governor Roy Cooper announced that he is considering making masks mandatory across the state, telling reporters, “we want people voluntarily to do this, but we are looking at, potentially, rules to make these mandatory.”

In response, leaders of the group “Reopen NC” (which has 79,000 members of their Facebook group and 6,900 likes on their Facebook page) started a “Burn Your Mask Challenge”, that’s now begun to catch fire.

While the challenge has been adopted by some members of the group, the vast majority of North Carolinians have strongly condemned the challenge.

5 Interesting Facts About Lightroom Presets

0

Lightroom presets found their way into people’s mobile phones and it changed how we edit our photos forever. Now, even if you don’t have years of experience editing photos, you can edit photos in a professional way.

How Did Lightroom Presets Become a Thing?

Nobody really knows how Lightroom presets became so trendy. Obviously, the fact that one of the biggest photo editing companies allowed you to use this feature for free on your mobile phone had a lot to do with it. Now, everyone could edit their photos professionally with a couple of clicks without the need of learning editing techniques.

In addition to that, I can tell you how 123Presets.store started. Our CEO didn’t know that the store will have more than 80 presets in the store. Everything started from a small request that he as a photographer received. One of his clients asked him whether he could create the presets specifically for their company. So that when they take their own pictures, their Instagram feed looks consistent with the photos that he took with his pro.

Import on Desktop & Use It on Mobile

Not many people know that you can import your presets to desktop and then use them on mobile. This is only possible if you have bought Lightroom. If you are not a photographer, then most probably you don’t want to invest in a program. However, it is definitely convenient that you can add your photos from your DSLR and then upload them from your phone on the go.

Make Changes After Using a Preset

Another important thing is that presets are so easy to adjust. Hence, after the more complex settings such as tone curve or split toning is added, you can edit your presets exposure and saturation. This allows you to create your own unique style quickly. For example, just by increasing the whites you will have a profession but yet different preset.

What Kind of Changes You Might Want to Make to Professional Presets?

Many influencers choose one extra feature that they adjust once they buy a set of presets. For example, they might increase the whites because they like the look of it. Others decrease the saturation because they want to achieve a more natural look. Some people select one color and just saturate that one. Others add clarity. Quite frankly, the possibilities are endless. But having professional presets help you tremendously to save time and also achieve the look that you want immediately.

If you have never used presets before, you simply don’t know how each setting interferes with one another. For instance, you know that you love minimalist style but you just don’t know which colors to adjust. You want your photo to be minimalistic but also stand out from the crowd. Professional presets will do just that. For example, minimal presets make sure that your skin tones are tan and glowing but the rest of the photo will be desaturated.

Edit Color for Uniform Feed

One of the main reasons why people started using presets is because they allow you to have a consistent Instagram feed. Even if your photos are taken in different locations, with different outfits, and even different lighting conditions, you can still make your Instagram tones match,

From Beginner to Advanced Editing

Lightroom allows you to make edits yourself. From small things like adjusting exposure to more advanced features such as split tones or tone curve adjustments. Most importantly presets can adjust your color settings. That’s why the photos have a unique style when the presets are applied.

Joedance is riding a wave of expansion as it celebrates its 11th anniversary, including adding Georgia and Tennessee to the list of the Festival’s film eligibility list, and adding a student film category, which will be showcased Saturday afternoon on Festival weekend.

Joedance, which includes the annual film festival during the first full weekend in August and related events year-round, honors the memory of Joe Restaino by raising funds and awareness for pediatric cancer research at Atrium Health’s Levine Children’s. The family chose a film festival to honor Joe Restaino because of his love of movies.

Joedance supports research and clinical trials for pediatric sarcomas, blastomas and brain tumors.

To date, Joedance has donated more than $205,000 to Atrium Health’s Levine Children’s in 10 years, including $35,000 in 2019.

    Joe Restaino

Joe Restaino died of osteosarcoma on January 8, 2010, at the age of 20. A resident of Fourth Ward in Charlotte, Restaino graduated with high honors and was a varsity swimmer at The McCallie School in Chattanooga in 2008 before moving on to the University of Pennsylvania. He was treated for the first occurrence of the disease in 2006 during his high school sophomore year. The cancer recurred in 2008 during his senior year at The McCallie School. The third recurrence of his cancer happened his freshman year at Penn. Joe withdrew from school to be with his family.

During the 2008 graduation ceremony at McCallie – which Joe Restaino was able to attend between cancer treatments – he received the Campbell Award, one of the school’s highest honors, voted on by the student body. In 2007, Joe Restaino established the Bone Cancer Awareness Walk at The McCallie School and continued to raise money for pediatric cancer research. (That walk is now held jointly with Girls Preparatory School of Chattanooga and has been renamed Mission: Remission.) In August 2010, eight months after Joe’s death, his family established the Joedance Film Festival to support the research and clinical trials for rare pediatric cancer at Atrium Health’s Levine Children’s.

Possible Tropical Storm ‘Dolly’ System Growing Off The Carolina Coast

0

A growing low-pressure area off the coast of South Carolina is now producing heavy showers and thunderstorms for both North and South Carolina.

The National Hurricane currently says the system has a 10% chance of developing into Tropical Storm Dolly over the next 5 days.

This morning, the National Weather Service issued the following alert:

1. A non-tropical low pressure area located about 150 miles
south-southeast of the North Carolina-South Carolina border is
producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms over portions of
southeastern and eastern North Carolina, including the Outer Banks,
and adjacent Atlantic waters. The low is moving slowly toward the
north-northeast, and a gradual turn toward the north is forecast
later today. Environmental conditions are expected to remain
unfavorable for significant development through tonight when the low
should move inland over eastern North Carolina. Regardless of
development, heavy rainfall could occur over portions of
northeastern South Carolina and southeastern and eastern North
Carolina through Wednesday. For additional information, see products
from your local National Weather Service office.

You can see the system developing and attempting to form a spiral in this time-lapsed radar image:

Regardless of whether or not the system develops into a named storm, it will be bringing heavy rainfall to most of the Carolinas today and tomorrow.
