Krispy Kreme Opening New Hallmark Location in Charlotte with 24/7 Donut Vending Machine

Krispy Kreme is about to open their most revolutionary sugar factory in the heart of Charlotte’s South End. The new location will include a 24/7 ‘Doughnut Vending Machine’, scoop sandwiches, hand-spun milkshakes, and fresh baked Insomnia Cookies.

They’ll be hosting a massive grand opening party all next week where they will be giving out ‘Celebration Dozen Tickets’.

According to Krispy Kreme’s official rules, they will award a total of 120 ‘Celebration Dozen Tickets’ in Charlotte. “Each prize is a punch card (the “Prize Card”) that entitles the owner to receive one dozen Krispy Kreme Original Glazed doughnuts per month for one year (total 12 dozen) at participating Krispy Kreme locations.”

The new location will be located at 2116 Hawkins St., next to the South End Common Market and across the Street from Ashton South End.

TD Thirteen Could Become Hurricane And Sweep Through The Carolinas Next Week

A growing disturbance in the Atlantic is now predicted to become the 12th named storm of 2020 later today.

This morning, the National Hurricane Center sent out the following alert:

At 800 AM AST (1200 UTC), the center of Tropical Depression Thirteen
was located near latitude 15.4 North, longitude 50.9 West. The
depression is moving toward the west-northwest near 21 mph (33 km/h)
and this motion is expected to continue for the next few days.  On
the forecast track, the depression is expected to move near or north
of the northern Leeward Islands by late Friday and near or north of
the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico on Saturday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph (55 km/h) with higher gusts. 
Gradual strengthening is forecast, and the depression is expected to 
become a tropical storm later today.

By the end of today, ‘Tropical Depression Thirteen’ will likely become ‘Tropical Storm Laura’ on a direct path toward the east coast of the US.

Late model intensities show the storm could increase in strength to a hurricane, possibly even a category 4 hurricane before it makes landfall in the states.

Several model paths of the storm have it sweeping through both North and South Carolina before it heads back out to sea.

The Atlantic Coast hurricane season for 2020 runs from June 1st through November 30th.

NWS officials are reminding all residents in Atlantic Coast states to be prepared for this hurricane season.

Testament to this is the fact that lotteries were only introduced in 2000, and if you dare mention horse racing or land based casinos, you will raise an eyebrow or two.

In the year 2017, a bid to include a massive gambling expansion was explored, however the bill did not make it very far, and unfortunately did not make it to the Senate.We would be lying if we said that there was more progress with regards to this, and following this bid, there was never any further talk about the matter.  Lawmakers try to change the mindset and push for a legal framework to be implemented, however they are always faced with a brick wall.

One of the State’s Reps Russell Ott approved and co-sponsored the bill to introduce gambling in 2017. Mr Otts was interviewed in 2018 by the Post and Courier and mentioned that it would be very difficult to get such a bill passed in election year. Ott promised that he will still raise the issue in the future and hopes that such bills would be implemented.

If South Carolina passes a law to include legal gambling, the South Carolina constitution would need to be amended and this would include a referendum. The question would be:  Do you agree that legal gambling should be implemented in South Carolina? A referendum is not an easy process and this is one of the main elements to why gamblimg is still illegal in the state.

During the last days of 2018, senior law members of the state launched a bid to see sports gambling take a legal stand. This was done by filing a motion to amend the constitution. Was iat an easy task? Nope!  In Fact the bill faded out in January 2019, and hence the gambling on sports, horses or casino activity remains illegal to this date.

Let’s discuss the South Carolina Gambling Laws

“If we had to point out one thing about SC’s gambling laws, we’d say that a reform is much much needed. Funnily enough, some of these laws date back to 200 years ago …yes you read that right, 200 years!  Back then if you mentioned world gambling, you would be shunned. If we had to take a closer look at the SC’s laws relating to gambling, specifically the South Carolina Code of Laws, which by the way were written in 1802. They state the following:

If any person shall play at any tavern, inn, store for the retailing of spirituous liquors or in any house used as a place of gaming, barn, kitchen, stable or other outhouse, street, highway, open wood, race field or open place at (a) any game with cards or dice, (b) any gaming table, commonly called A, B, C, or E, O, or any gaming table known or distinguished by any other letters or by any figures, (c) any roley-poley table, (d) rouge et noir, (e) any faro bank (f) any other table or bank of the same or the like kind under any denomination whatsoever or (g) any machine or device licensed pursuant to Section 12-21-2720 and used for gambling purposes, except the games of billiards, bowls, backgammon, chess, draughts, or whist when there is no betting on any such game of billiards, bowls, backgammon, chess, draughts, or whist or shall bet on the sides or hands of such as do game, upon being convicted thereof, before any magistrate, shall be imprisoned for a period of not over thirty days or fined not over one hundred dollars, and every person so keeping such tavern, inn, retail store, public place, or house used as a place for gaming or such other house shall, upon being convicted thereof, upon indictment, be imprisoned for a period not exceeding twelve months and forfeit a sum not exceeding two thousand dollars, for each and every offense.

If we had to reword or simplify part A of the above, it clearly states that any form of gaming events in South Carolina should be banned. The term ‘ any game of cards or dice’ even prohibits  players for having a friendly match between friends. Even though the actual term of money gambling is not mentioned, it still prohibits all forms of gambling. Just to show how sad the situation is in the state, the police topped a club gaming session that was organised by senior citizens.  Why would a small niche of people be disrupted from a night of fun?

Another closer look at sections 16-19 and 70 also highlight how old the SC laws really are, and even ask that all people abide by the rules of not playing on a Sabbath. The fine is a small amount of money of just $50. But can you imagine telling a group of friends to not play on a feast when chilling out is the norm?  The SC State acknowledges that a new law would need to be drafted soon, and this would allow social play and people to confidentially play a game or two of bridge, especially retirees and senior citizens.

Although the new laws have not been implemented yet, and a million and one barriers would need to be surpassed, we feel that SC needs some reforms.  Some of the decision makers feel that if one form of gambling is introduced, this could pave the way for gambling to take over and potentially see the repercussions of such laws. Truth be told, if you find yourself in South Carolina, today or in a few years time, you would not be at your front porch enjoying a good game of poker with friends, let alone you registering at an online casino. South Carolina needs reforms, and some will take decades to implement and launch.

Organizers of the 2020 Novant Health Charlotte Marathon have just announced that the entire 26 mile run will take place virtually for the first time ever.

They are asking runners to join a Facebook live event to talk about what they want to see in the event.

“Committing to a virtual event was not a decision that came easily— we explored every possible option,” said Tim Rhodes, Race Director for the Novant Health Charlotte Marathon. “But with so much uncertainty around events and with everyone’s health in mind, we feel this is the best and safest move to make.”

Apartment List just published their quarterly renter migration report, shedding new light on how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted moving trends to and from Charlotte.
Their Q3 Migration report analyzes proprietary data from millions of user searches spanning April through early-August to determine where Americans are looking to make their next move. Compared to this time last year, they found notable shifts in search activity, likely due to the pandemic and its impact on the economy. While some of the hottest markets have seen a dropoff in out-of-metro interest, other metros are seeing activity pick up.
Key insights from the report include:
  • 32.5% of those looking for a place to live in Charlotte are searching from outside the metro, compared to 37.6% at this time last year.
  • 23.4% of apartment hunters currently living in Charlotte are looking to move elsewhere, compared to 23.6% last year.
  • Renters looking to move to the Charlotte metro from elsewhere are most likely to be searching from New York, NY. This is also is the most most popular destination among renters looking to move away from Charlotte.

Paintings, sculptures, sidewalk chalk, fabric, performance art, anything that expresses your creativity — it all counts!  The only requirement is that your art be seen from the street or sidewalk. If you don’t have a yard – put it on a balcony, in a window, on your car, or even in a friend’s yard (with permission).

Branch of the NAACP and eight individual plaintiffs in North Carolina claimed victory today after a federal judge for the Middle District of North Carolina granted their motion for a preliminary injunction, disallowing a sheriff and local officials from prohibiting protest near the Confederate monument on the Historic Courthouse grounds.

Judge Catherine Eagles ruled that Alamance County’s ban on allowing protestors on the courthouse grounds, steps, and sidewalks likely violates protesters’ First Amendment rights.

The original lawsuit was filed by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, ACLU, ACLU of North Carolina, and Lockamy Law Firm on behalf of the Alamance NAACP and 8 individuals in early July.

“It’s freedom and the right to protest for everybody, or freedom for nobody. I hope county officials understand that going forward,” said Barrett Brown, president of the Alamance Branch of NAACP.
