Mecklenburg County Igniting a ‘Controlled Burn’ Today at Noon

0

The Mecklenburg County Natural Resources staff has just announced that they will be setting the Buckeye Cove Nature Preserve on fire today at noon as part of a controlled burn.

The county sent out an alert noting that smoke will be seen around North Charlotte today between 12pm and 3pm:

“Mecklenburg County Natural Resources staff are conducting a controlled burn today beginning around noon at Buckeye Cove Nature Preserve on Cashion Road in Huntersville. Smoke will affect air quality in the downwind area for 2-3 hours. To reduce your exposure to smoke, stay indoors or avoid areas of heavy smoke.”

According to the Mecklenburg County website, “land managers use controlled burns (also known as prescribed fire) to mimic the natural disturbance caused by the natural fires of years ago. These fires are carefully planned and conducted under specific weather conditions to achieve specific goals. In this way fire can safely be used as a management tool.”

City of Winston Salem in Hot Water After Announcing Dr. Seuss Event

0

The North Carolina city of Winston Salem is now in hot water after announcing a “Dr. Seuss Drive-In Car Decorating Contest” just days after the Dr. Seuss organization removed 6 books from publication for having racist undertones.

They originally announced the event yesterday morning at around 7am, saying “Join us for a Seussian spectacular afternoon at Parkland Park (1660 Brewer Road) on Saturday, March 13 from 1-3 p.m.!

Enter your car in the Dr. Seuss inspired car decorating contest! We will also have car games, crafts, book give-aways and story time!”

Over 170 people have so far commented on the post, saying things like:

“Dr. Seuss does NOT need to be celebrated. The racist in some of his books were hurtful to African Americans, Asians and many others. His Cat in the Hat was character was inspired and reflects blackface minstrelsy.”

“Talk about some bad timing. 🤣 Are you just trying to get Winston-Salem mentioned poorly on every Late Show next week.”

“Since you’re not allowing pictures, it only takes 1 quick search to see The Cat in the Hat is based off blackface, his books include insulting imagery and stereotypes of other races, and blatant racist cartoons of Black people being sold and called the n-word. He doesn’t need a celebration.”

“Tone deaf….😒”

“So even being new to the state and the area, it is clear that this city has a very strong black community. This is incredibly unsympathetic and pretty much a slap in the face to the people who pay your government salaries and for racist celebrations like this.”

After the public outcry, the city quickly updated the post yesterday afternoon, saying;

“This event is being converted to a non Dr. Seuss event. Stand-by and check back for more details later today.”

What do you think about Winston Salem’s decision to create the event?

The Ol’ Roy Donut sports a Carolina blue icing drizzled atop Coach Williams’ favorite donut, the Boston Creme. It will be sold throughout North Carolina with 50 cents from each donut sale between March 14-27 going to the local charities.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to team with Dunkin’ to provide financial assistance to these worthy causes through the sale of this custom Boston Crème. It’s a fun way for fans of all teams to support the work at the Children’s Hospital and Food Bank,” said coach Roy Williams.

UNC Children’s Hospital is a top-tier academic medical center dedicated to providing care for all children in North Carolina regardless of socio-economic status, background, or language preference. The Hospital serves children from all 100 counties in North Carolina and from around the world, with many patients travel great distances to UNC Children’s for specialty care.

“We are extremely grateful for the support we have received from Dunkin’ and its franchisees who have provided countless donut and coffee donations for our healthcare workers, grants from Dunkin’s Joy in Childhood Foundation, and now the Ol’ Roy Donut benefiting our hospital,” said Cameron Shoaf, Coordinator of Special Events at UNC Children’s Hospital.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina strives through education, advocacy, and partnerships to eliminate hunger by the solicitation and distribution of food. Last year, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina distributed over 70 million pounds of food and household items to over 800 hunger feeding agencies including emergency pantries, soup kitchens, senior programs, shelters and low-income daycares.

“Our friends at Dunkin’ have been wonderful supporters of our mission to end hunger for quite some time. Their dedication to feeding our neighbors in need in a 24-county service region is visible through their hours of volunteerism and grant opportunities for child hunger programming,” said Kay Carter, CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina.

Leveraging the Ol’ Roy Donut will help in efforts to feed the over 553,000 people in North Carolina who are struggling with food insecurity including almost 188,000 children.

Sons of Confederate Suing NC DMV For Removing Confederate Flag From License Plates

The North Carolina Sons of Confederate Veterans is taking the North Carolina DMV to court after the DMV decided to no longer produce license plates with the confederate flag on them.

The DMV made the decision to halt production on confederate flag plates starting January 1st of this year, saying:

“Effective January 1, 2021, the Division of Motor Vehicles will no longer issue or renew specialty license plates bearing the Confederate battle flag or any variation of that flag. The Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has determined that license plates bearing the Confederate battle flag have the potential to offend those who view them. We have therefore concluded that display of the Confederate battle flag is inappropriate for display on specialty license plates, which remain property of the state.”

According to a press release from the Office of The Commander of The North Carolina Sons of Confederate Veterans, R. Kevin Stone:

“We are legitimately entitled to use our group’s official emblem. The Confederate Battle Flag is a symbol of our heritage. Symbols can often have more than one meaning. To assume the Confederate Battle Flag is uniquely offensive is to validate only one viewpoint and thereby discriminate against others.

This blatant discrimination by our government is often driven by an ignorance of our state’s real history and a deep hatred for our inheritance as Southerners. It is largely driven by racist organizations and intolerant politicians who would condone violence and hatred against anyone or anything that doesn’t conform to their way of thinking.”

What do you think about the decision?

Do you think the DMV should reinstate the confederate flag license plates?

Remote work grew 30% in the past decade and while some saw it as a tech industry and millennial fad, coronavirus forced many traditional businesses to adopt it. Even as we seek a return to normalcy, more companies will continue to hire remotely making it critical for job seekers to know where and how to get these jobs.

The rankings were determined by analyzing three metrics in each state: current remote job opportunities, projected growth rates in these jobs through 2028, and broadband access.
North Carolina received the No. 15 overall ranking based on how the state fared, relative to other states, in each of the three categories: No. 18 most remote friendly jobs; No. 17 for growth rate in remote jobs by 2028, and No. 31 for broadband access.

Entire Stock Market Shoots Higher After Bullish Comments By Charlotte’s Own David Tepper

0

Stocks are trading higher across the board today thanks largely to a few choice words by a very prominent Charlottean.

Panthers’ owner and hedge fund manager David Tepper did an interview with CNBC’s Joe Kernen where Tepper told Kernen that he believes the rise in treasury rates is over, believing that foreign investors like Japan are about to start buying.

“Basically I think rates have temporarily made the most of the move and should be more stable in the next few months, which makes it safer to be in stocks for now,” Tepper said.

The Charlotte newcomer believes that large-cap “bellwether” stocks like Amazon are starting to look attractive after the recent stock market correction.

Since his comments aired this morning, the DOW and NASDAQ are now both up over 100 points.

Our state now ranks second in the nation for total number of symbols relocated (second only to Virginia who relocated 71).

You can see a list of all 168 Confederate symbols that have been relocated or replaced across the U.S. here.
