Tar Heels Running Back Javonte Williams Could Be Miami Bound

North Carolina running back Javonte Williams could be headed to the Miami Dolphins in next month’s NFL draft.

The 20-year-old is considered one of the top running back in the draft class with only Alabama’s Najee Harris and Clemson’s Travis Etienne tipped to go before him.

Williams finished behind team-mate Michael Carter in total yards last season despite having one more carry, but he was a regular in the endzone, scoring 19 touchdowns to tie for third in the nation.

Draft experts believe he will be a “huge upgrade” for any team looking to pick up a running back in this year’s NFL draft. It is not hard to see why.

Williams, who stands 5’ 10” and weighs 220lbs, is considered a three-down back and his ability to rack up yards after contact has led to some comparing him with the man they call ‘Beast Mode’, Marshawn Lynch. That comparison may be a little far-fetched at this time, but that level of physicality should help him settle into life in the NFL quickly.

He is also an able receiver, making him a dual threat out of the backfield, but one negative to his game that could hurt his draft stock is his lack of straight-line speed. Williams is unlikely to run away from defensive backs when he reaches the next level. That sort of ‘problem’ did not hurt David Montgomery of the Chicago Bears last season though – only four men rushed for more yards than him.

Williams will be an excellent recruit for whoever does pick him up, and according to draft experts his most likely destination is Miami. The Dolphins have their QB and they have a strong receiving corps, but one area where they are week is at running back.

The arrival of Williams would give that area of the offense a serious upgrade. It would also give them a level of physicality that they previously saw when Jay Ajayi was in the backfield, and before that Ricky Williams.

Therefore it would be no surprise on April 30 if we hear Roger Goodell say “with the 36th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select Javonte Williams, running back, North Carolina.”

Tonight CMS Will Vote To Change Name of Barringer After Discovering White Supremacist Past

Tonight, the CMS board will vote to rename one of Charlotte’s oldest elementary schools – Barringer Academic Center.

The school system first announced they would consider a name change in October of last year after they discovered that the man the school was named after was a white supremacist.

According to a press release, the school was originally named after Osmond Barringer.

“Brothers Paul B. Barringer and Osmand M. Barringer actively worked to advance ideals rooted in white supremacy. Paul became a leader in the field of “scientific” racism at the University of Virginia in the late 1800s, and Osmand was a leader in the local white supremacy club movement in Charlotte at the turn of the 20th century. Osmand also fought against the desegregation of public facilities in Charlotte in the 1950s.”

The CMS board will be voting on renaming the school after one of the following black men who have made substantial impacts throughout Charlotte’s history: Charles Parker, Samuel Banks Bride, or Charles Sifford.

Parker, a former slave, was instrumental in developing the community around West Boulevard. Pride, also a former slave, was the first professor at JCS University, and he help open a local high school for black students in Charlotte. Sifford is a Charlotte native who became the first African American to win a PGA Tour event in American history.

North Carolina Ranked 2021’s 9th Worst State for Children’s Health Care

With children under age 16 not yet able to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and Every Kid Healthy Week kicking off on April 26, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2021’s Best & Worst States for Children’s Health Care.

In order to determine which states offer the most cost-effective and highest-quality health care for children, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 35 key metrics. The data set ranges from share of children aged 0 to 17 in excellent or very good health to pediatricians and family doctors per capita.

North Carolina came in at #43 and South Carolina was ranked considerably higher at #22.

An electric vehicle (EV) will help you lower emissions released into the environment. But can it also save you money?

Duke Energy’s Electric Vehicle Savings Calculator lets drivers make individual cost comparisons between driving their current vehicle and driving an all-electric vehicle.

“Drivers want specific information about the operational savings they can see if they switch to an electric vehicle,” said Brita Formato, Duke Energy’s managing director, Electrification Transportation. “We designed this online tool so drivers can make an apples-to-apples comparison with good information about the benefits of driving electric.”

To use the tool, drivers need to:

  1. Estimate the miles they drive on a typical day
  2. Have a good idea about the miles per gallon their current vehicle gets
  3. Know the average price they are paying for a gallon of gasoline

To provide an accurate savings figure, the tool will factor in the price of additional electricity drivers are using when charging at home – since 80% of EV charging takes place at home.

Today, there are more than 1.7 million EVs on U.S. roads. The Edison Electric Institute and the Institute for Electric Innovation estimate this number will grow to 18 million EVs by 2030.

Variety is picking up, too. According to Edmunds, the online resource for automotive information, 30 EVs from 21 brands will become available for sale this year – compared to 17 vehicles from 12 brands in 2020.

Foster care has been growing at an alarming rate with a shortage of permanent, safe, and loving homes for adoptable children,”  commented Brian Maness, President and CEO of CHS.

“For a child in foster care, it’s a state of limbo, where they don’t know what their future holds. They don’t know whether they’re going to remain with that foster family, move to another foster home, return to their biological family or whatever situation they came from, or whether they are going to find an adoptive family.”

Mecklenburg County recently released the following “Adoption Tales” video. The video features an in-depth interview with William, and it talks all about the other children around the Charlotte area who are now in need of a secure, loving family:

Adoptive parents, through a legal process, take on full parental responsibility for a child. People have to be over the age of 21 but do not have to be married or in a relationship to adopt a child.

Prospective parents must attend a pre-adoption workshop to start the process.
