All You Need to Know About 2023 Queen’s Cup

This year will be the 26th running of the Queen’s Cup in Mineral Springs, North Carolina, and once again it is set to be a yearly highlight for many people. The event continues to attract both keen horse racing fans and many people who enjoy the social aspect of the event.

As ever, the race day takes place on the last Saturday in April. As ever, a big crowd is expected to attend this year’s meeting. Here is everything you need to know.

Feature Race Is a Steeplechase

Steeplechase racing is not as common in the United States as it is in places like the UK and Ireland. The most famous steeplechase in the world is the Grand National. You may have seen Noble Yeats win that race in 2022. Like the Queen’s Cup, that contest takes place in April and last year’s winner is the horse racing odds +800 favorite to prevail again in 2023.

The most prestigious steeplechase in the world is the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Galopin Des Champs is the +150 favorite in the Cheltenham Festival betting to win that contest this year. He could be set to establish himself as the most exciting chaser in the world.

The Queen’s Cup Steeplechase, won in 2022 by French Light, is a novice chase that is run over the distance of two and 3/8 miles. It features horses with very little experience in jumping fences. The winner of this race tends to go on to compete in major national prizes later in the year.

Events On the Day

There are a total of five races on the Queen’s Cup race day schedule, but the afternoon is not just about the racing – there are lots of activities to get involved in. 

The hat contest is one of the competitions which has sat on the schedule since the first year of the event. You can register to enter between 10.00 am-11.30 am. The only rule is that your hat needs to be hand decorated. There are prizes for the best men’s and women’s hats.

Before you arrive on the course, you can take part in a tailgate. Just like you may have seen outside of the Bank of American Stadium before a Carolina Panthers NFL game, fans gather in the car park and enjoy food and drink together. Prizes are also given to the ‘Most Elegant’, ‘Most Creative’, and ‘Most Whimsical’ tailgate.

Dress Code

Although there is no official dress code, it is advised to wear comfortable shoes on the day and to check the weather beforehand. Hopefully, the sun will be shining for this year’s event.

Some racegoers like to bring a foldable chair with them which they can use on the lawn at the racecourse. There is some seating around the track, but bringing your own seats ensures you can move around across the afternoon.

Food and drink are sold at the racecourse, but you can bring your own if you want to have a picnic.

Duke Energy Opens New 12,000 Acre 207 Megawatt Wind Farm

Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions (DESS), a nonregulated commercial brand of Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK), today announced it has placed into commercial operation the 207-megawatt (MW) 12,000-acre Ledyard Windpower project in Kossuth County, Iowa.

“More than 10% of the nation’s wind power is in Iowa, and it’s exciting for our company to begin operating in that market,” said Chris Fallon, president of Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions. “We also have a terrific customer in Verizon, and we’re pleased to help them advance their own renewable energy portfolio for their operations.”

Verizon Communications is supporting the project through a 15-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) for 180 MW of power from the Ledyard project.

“Verizon’s support of renewable energy is a key enabler to achieving our goal of net-zero emissions in our operations by 2035,” said James Gowen, Verizon’s chief sustainability officer and senior vice president, global supply chain. “Through investments in clean energy solutions – like this agreement with Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions – Verizon is doing its part to green the U.S. energy grid.”

While Duke has not provided exact construction costs, the Charlotte Business Journal estimates that the entire project likely costs $630-640 million, based on US Energy Information Agency information.

This is DESS’s first project in the state, providing enough renewable capacity to power the equivalent of 75,000 U.S. homes. It consists of 46 Vestas V150 4.5-MW turbines.

Voices From The Past is returning in 2023 as a part of Charlotte SHOUT! Come take a “spirited stroll” through Charlotte’s historic cemeteries and interact with over 20 portrayers as they tell the stories of the men and women who helped make Charlotte what it is today.

The event will feature food trucks, live music from the Charlotte Folk Society, and complimentary golf cart rides from Carolina Golf Cars for our visitors that may have difficulty walking around the cemetery. The event will also feature the Charlotte Fire Department’s restored Neptune fire pump truck, circa 1860 and cars from the Queen City Model A Club.

This event is put on by the Historic Elmwood/Pinewood Cemetery Inc. It is free and open to the public. It is both family-friendly and pet-friendly. Whether you are a native of Charlotte or new to the city, this is a fun event for all to learn more about our history while helping to preserve it.

When jockey Lorcan Williams was slapped with an 18-day suspension for breaking the newly implemented rules designed to limit the number of times a rider can strike a thoroughbred whilst using his or her whip – it sent a strong and clear message to those in the world of horse racing that punishments will be handed down if stipulations aren’t adhered to.

As part of the rules, jockeys cannot exceed six strikes with the whip in a flat race and seven in a jumps race – all while ensuring they are not using the whip above shoulder height. While the amendments to the rules late last year were widely praised by a number of jockeys, Williams’ suspension just weeks out from the Cheltenham Festival has opened up a can of worms.

While there are 20 jockeys in total to have been suspended in accordance with the new guidelines, Williams is most certainly the highest profile jockey to fall victim to them. The decision came after the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) penalised him for overuse of the whip in his Grade 2 Prestige Novices’ Hurdle victory at Haydock atop Makin’yourmindup. Williams was found to have struck his horse two more times than the maximum number of seven permitted.

As a result of his suspension, Williams will no longer be eligible to take part in the Cheltenham Festival – a realisation that has hit the 23-year-old rather hard.

“I’m absolutely gutted, but it is what it is and I’ll take it on the chin. Hopefully I’ll learn from it but it has been a hard transition for us all,” he said.
