City of Charlotte Approved A New Development on The Eastland Mall Site

0

eastland mall new lifeThe City of Charlotte has finally approved plans for a new project to be built on the old Eastland Mall site. The city counsel recently voted to sell 11.4 acres of the site to CMS for $650,000 (a price of $57,000 per acre) so they can build a new K-8 language school.

In 2012 the city originally bought the 80-acre site for $13 million (a price of $162,000 per acre).

The city’s appraiser valued the 11.4 acres at $1.42 million, but CMS’s appraiser said it was only worth $638,400. Since the city wasn’t looking to recoup their investment, they gave in to CMS’s value.

In the past 4 years the city has tried to develop several other projects, including a new mall, a massive mixed-use development, and movie studios. All three previous ideas didn’t have enough investor interest to move forward.

The city is now hoping that this smaller development will kick-start new projects on the remainder of the land.

5 men arrested for breaking into uptown charlotte homeSeveral burglars were arrested this past weekend after attempting to break into a home that Charlotte police were already investigating, according to WSOC.

In Uptown Charlotte’s Garden District Drive, a homeowner returned to find his house broken into by several men. He was able to quietly escape the property and dial 911.

“I looked out my window at 5 or 6 and there were six or seven cop cars out here and I had no idea what was going on. It could have happened to anybody.” commented next door neighbor Kathryn Ruland.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police arrived and arrested two suspects, 33-year-old Johnny Penny and 24-year-old Javonte Cathcart, while a few others ran away.

The next thing that happened shocked everyone. According to CMPD officers, two hours later, three of the original suspects came back to break into the same home again. Unbeknownst to them, police were still in the home completing their investigation.

Those three suspects, 20-year-old Malik Long, 18-year-old Khalil Wallace and 16-year-old Jamaka Culbreath, tried to run but were caught and taken into custody.

“I was in my house and I just saw a bunch of cops; I didn’t know what was going on – all of a sudden I heard screaming and ran inside, it was crazy.” commented another neighbor, Avi Bagley.

Penny, Cathcart, Long and Wallace are now charged with felony breaking and entering. Cullbreath is charged with possession of stolen goods. Penny and Wallace are additionally charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

North Carolina Swimmer Wins First Olympic Gold Medal

North Carolina State swimmer Ryan Held just won his first gold medal along side Michael Phelps as part of the U.S. Men’s 4×100 freestyle relay.

Ryan swam the third 100 meter section of the race, holding the lead that Michael Phelps gave him. Nathan Adrian finished off the final 100 meters for the Americans to narrowly beat France (silver) and Australia (broze).

Here’s a clip of the final moments of the race:

and the four victors receiving their gold medals:

Standing between Adrian and Phelps, Held bent his head and brought his left hand to his face as the anthem blared. Phelps saw what was happening and offered a supportive hand around Held’s neck.

“I didn’t think I was going to cry. I was too tired to cry, I didn’t think I could cry. I’ve heard the national anthem hundreds of times, but as soon as that played it was just something different. The tears just started rolling down my face.” Ryan Held commented during his victory speech.

“It’s good to see the emotion of those young guys. It shows they really do care and they love what they’re doing,” commented Michael Phelps, who earned his record 19th Olympic gold medal.

The Guiness World Record For The Largest Paintbrush Mosaic Was Just Broke In Charlotte

worlds largest paintbrush muralHundreds of Lowe’s shoppers and guests have just helped to build the largest paintbrush mosaic in the world at 350 total square feet.

The massive paintbrush mosaic is made up of stained Adirondack chairs overlooking a colorful sunset began and was made by Lowe’s in partnership with Olympic Maximum Stain.

The mosaic was completed and awarded the Guinness World Records title at an event in Charlotte, near the Lowe’s headquarters. Representatives of Lowe’s stores and Olympic Paints and Stains joined customers and Guinness World Records adjudicator Michael Furnari to see the final mosaic unveiled in a curtain-drop ceremony.

“We were able to make a big splash throughout the Olympic Maximum tour with the paintbrush mosaic. Consumers loved being a part of the record-breaking process at each stop along the tour, and it was as memorable for them as it was for us. This accomplishment would not have been possible without our customers’ involvement and engagement in the Olympic Maximum stain demonstrations.” commented Alison Bruce, PPG senior channel manager with Olympic stains.

State-Of-The-Art eSports Center Coming To Charlotte

esports coming to charlotte

Charlotte-based venture capitol firm SierraMaya360 just signed a 7-figure deal with top ESL Team EnVyUs, and are now working to move their headquarters to Charlotte and build the world’s largest eSports training facility right here in the Queen City.

esports coming to charlotte 2ESports is the fastest growing spectator sport in the world – it’s now projected to hit 1 billion viewers by the end of 2016 (1/7th of the world’s population). “The numbers are ridiculous, it’s going to be the 4th most watched sport in the world by the end of the year,” commented Jeff Brokaw, an associate with SierraMaya360.

Most of the eSports teams are now located in LA or South Korea. Team EnVyUs’ new Charlotte headquarters and training facility will be the first major eSports facility on the East Coast and the biggest and most high-tech facility in the world. “Currently, the largest facility is in LA at about 15,000 square feet – ours will be way bigger and will feature far more high-tech features – think of it like the Silicon Valley of eSports.” Jeff commented.

He also told us that once the training facility is built, it will draw in top eSports players from around the world, and would allow for a major ESL tournament to come to Charlotte on an annual basis. “We’ve already had talks with the Time Warner Cable Arena and we’re confident we could sell it out.”

The ESL currently holds tournaments all over the world, ranging in size from 20,000-100,000 people, with ticket prices ranging from $45 to well over $4,000 for some VIP seats. The tournaments usually last 3 days and bring in millions of dollars in revenue for the host city – similar to the CIAA Tournament or NASCAR’s Speed Week.

SierraMaya360 and Team EnVyUs are still working out the final details with Charlotte’s Chamber of Commerce, but they hope to have the new facility built and open by next February.

This recent YouTube interview gives some more insight into Shaquille O’Neil and Alex Rodriguez’s recent eSports investment;

Team EnVyUs is currently training for a major tournament that will be aired next month with a total prize of $1.5 million.

The team’s 40 players, along with their coaches and support staff will be moving into a temporary Charlotte headquarters next month while they wait for their new eSports complex to be approved.

Jeff told us that there’s still a chance that Charlotte could be out-bid by another city, as Team EnVyUs has been in talks with Dallas, ATL, Cleveland, Detroit, Minneapolis, LA, Vegas, and Greensboro.

The World’s Biggest ‘Scamp’ Fish Was Just Caught In North Carolina Waters

According to the NC Department of Marine Fisheries, 9 yr old Teddy Wingfield just caught the largest ‘scamp’ fish in history off the North Carolina coast.

The fish spanned a total length of 43 inches (tip of the nose to the tip of the tail) and measured approx. 28 inches around the widest point of the fish.

world record scamp caught off north carolina coastIt weighed in at 32 pounds, which topped the previous state record of 27 pounds, 1 ounce. That fish was also caught off Atlantic Beach back in 2012.

The current all-tackle world record scamp is 29 pounds, 10 ounces and was caught off Dauphin Island, Alabama in 2000, the NCDEQ reported.

Wingfield’s catch beats the world record by 2 pounds, 6 ounces.

The scamp grouper (Mycteroperca phenax) is a protogynous grouper, also known as the brown grouper or abadejo. It is normally found in reef over ledges and high-relief rocky bottoms in the eastern Gulf of Mexico and at low-profile bottoms at depths of 30 to 100 m in North Carolina.

This may be the world’s biggest scamp, but doesn’t even compare to some of the monster catfish that anglers have recently been catching in Lake Norman.
