US Whitewater Center Rapids Opened Back Up For The First Time In Over A Month

After over a month of shutting down all white-water activities at the US Whitewater Center, things are finally back in full swing.

Hundreds of people were excited to get back in the water this weekend, especially with the record heat we’ve been having:

The water was fully drained about a week ago – about a month after the death of a girl died from a water-born amoeba that was contracted at the Center.

Since the incident, local and state health and environmental agencies have teamed up with the CDC to drain water, clean channels and develop a new filter system.

Some of the cleaning efforts include using a suction method to remove all of the sediment from along the channels. The amoeba that originally caused all the problems usually lives in that type of sediment.

$10,000 Reward Offered For Information Regarding Missing Charlotte Girl

The family members of a missing girl in Charlotte are now getting desperate to find Tru Quan Le (aka ‘Sandy’), and are now offering a $10,000 reward to anyone who might be able to find her.

“She’s not the type of person that would run away, we are a tight-knit family. Everything we do, we do together.” commented Bobby Le, Sandy’s uncle.

sandy missing in charlotteThis past week Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police asked for the public’s help to locate Sandy and two other teens, believing that all three disappearances are somehow connected.

Family members originally reported 23-year-old Tru Quan Le (Sandy) as missing on August 10th. She was last seen leaving her home on Seamill Road in Charlotte’s Steele Creek area. Family said she left her home around 9 p.m. the night before and never returned.

The next day 17-year-old Alexandro Castillo and 19-year-old Ahmia M. Feaster also went missing. Feaster was last seen picking up Castillo from his home.

CMPD investigators are now saying that all three knew each other from working together at a local Showmars restaurant and their disappearances are most likely connected.

Family members speculate that one of her coworkers was in trouble with dangerous people. The last place she was seen was at QuikTrip on Eastway Drive meeting a friend who owed her $1000. According to bank statements, however, Sandy withdrew another $1000 instead of depositing the money she was owed.

Her phone has since been turned off and her social media accounts have been silent.

Sandy is a 4’8″ 110 lbs. Asian female with black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen driving a black 2003, 4-door Toyota Corolla with NC tag ZVE-1262.

Alex Castillo is a 6’1″ tall 180 lbs Hispanic male with black hair and brown eyes.

Ahmia Feaster is a 5’3″ tall 119 lbs. black female with black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen picking Castillo up from his home in a red, 4-door Dodge Caliber with NC tag DDD-2681.

New 10,000 Sq Ft Development on Cherry Rd Will Include A New Pet Supermarket and Starbucks

new rock hill developmentMorgan Property Group, LLC (“MPG”) just announced a new retail shopping center development on Cherry Rd.

MPG, through its affiliate College Corners Realty, LLC, assembled and acquired 1.30+/- acres, from four different property owners, at this intersection for a combined purchase price of $1,490,000. MPG plans to demolish the existing structures on site and redevelop the property for a 9,180 sq.ft. retail shopping center with outdoor seating and drive-thru. Construction is expected to start later this summer and be complete by the Spring of 2017.

Pet Supermarket, Inc. will lease 7,200 sq.ft. of space at the center, and Starbucks Corporation will occupy 1,980 sq. ft. of space at the center. Both tenants have signed long term leases. The center will be referred to as “College Corners” and will be 100% occupied upon completion. Margot Bizon of Katz and Associates represented Pet Supermarket in this transaction, and Nick Lukens of Moseley Real Estate Advisors, Inc. facilitated the lease with Starbucks. MPG has selected Park Sterling Bank to finance the project.

“We feel this transaction shows the best of what our company is capable of in terms of redevelopment and urban infill,” said Trey Morgan, President of MPG. “It has been a pleasure to work with the sellers, city staff and concerned citizens of Rock Hill on this project. 6 Year Old Charlotte Boy Passed Away – Family Launched GoFundMe Campaign For Funeral Costs

6 year old charlotte boy diedA former nurse with the Carolina Healthcare System has just lost her grandson and has started a GoFundMe campaign to ask the Charlotte community to help her and her daughter, Shivon, with their funeral costs.

Victor was 6 years old when he tragically passed in his Charlotte home.

His body has now been sitting in the morgue for over a week because the family needs financial assistance to bury him.

Odette Bacchus shared her feelings on Facebook, “I lost my grandson last night there us no words to describe the hurt, so father take control of my feeling I don’t want to understand I want you to just carry me through hold my hand and walk me through. Because I know you have a plan”

She noted on her GoFundMe campaign:

“God called one of his innocent sons home last week. My grandson Victor boobpie Waltower passed unexpectedly and we are not financially prepared. It would be a blessing and greatly appreciated if anyone can help by donating! Thanks in advance. God bless!

Charlotte’s Anthony Ervin Just Became The Oldest Swimmer in Olympic History to Win a Gold Medal

US swimmer Anthony Ervin becomes oldest man to take home olympic goldSwimMAC Carolina’s Anthony Ervin just won the gold medal in the men’s 50-meter freestyle final – becoming the oldest swimmer in Olympic history to win gold at the age of 35 (his nickname on the U.S. swim team is ‘Gramps’).

He clocked in at 21.40 seconds, just 1/100th of a second faster than the silver medalist, Florent Manaudou of France.

As soon as he saw his name in the first place spot, he recalled feeling utterly shocked, “The absurdity, the surrealness of it all, I smiled and laughed, because it seemed so unlikely.”

It’s now been 16 years since Ervin won his first gold medal in Sydney’s 2000 Olympic Games, and so much has happened in his life since then. He overcame a suicide attempt, a period of homelessness and a stint in a rock band. He found and lost over a dozen jobs, drank too much and did a dizzying amount of drugs, suffering deep depression and confusion before his eventual wake up call.

Ervin started on a rigorous training routine starting in 2011 and miraculously made it on the U.S. Olympic team in 2012, although he didn’t win any medals that year.

3 and a half years after that, he moved to Charlotte to train with legendary with SwimMAC Carolina’s Team Elite, led by head coach David Marsh.

He moved back in with his parents in Fort Mill, the same home he lived in 16 years ago, prior before winning his first gold medal.

Ervin commented that he would always consider Charlotte to be his home, but isn’t quite sure if he wants to permanently settle quite yet.

Belmont Just Opened Their New $2.5 Million Riverside Park (Video)

Belmont just opened their new Kevin Loftin Riverside Park, a 10-acre park that includes picnic shelters, a canoe and kayak launch, an amphitheater, and a one-of-a-kind natural wood textured playground that was build to look like an epic tree fort.

The $2.5 million park can be reserved for private events or parties and includes an incredibly peaceful fishing pier:

The construction of the park went over-budget by about $160,000, due to having to reroute a sewage line, remove soil contaminated with kerosene, and buying new material to fill in the site. They were able to recoup much of that cost from Duke Energy.

The new park currently only has 35 parking spaces, but the city has prepared overflow parking at the public works building across Catawba Street, as well as by the cove closest to the Wilkinson Boulevard bridge, connected by a gravel path.

The town is still finishing up construction on the last section of the park, which will include a public boat launch and a second fishing pier, they are hoping to have it open within the next 2 months.

Levine Children’s Hospital Treating 11-Year-Old Boy Bit By Mosquito Carrying Deadly La Crosse Virus

As the mosquito-born Zika virus continues to inch its way up the United States, a new virus is starting to rear its ugly head, it’s called La Crosse Encephalitis.

An 11-year-old boy from Asheville was recently bit by a mosquito carrying the virus, causing an almost immediate headache and an eventual stroke.

After his severe headaches didn’t seem to go away with conventional treatment, he was rushed to Charlotte’s Levine Children’s Hospital for an MRI and further testing.

Although he will suffer some permanent memory loss, doctors are now saying they expect him to make a full recovery. They are hoping he can leave hospital and head back home within the next few days.

The La Crosse encephalitis virus (LACV) is transmitted through infected mosquitos. Cases of the LACV disease are now starting to occur in the mid-Atlantic and southeastern states (see map). Although many people infected with LACV never develop any apparent symptoms, some will develop severe neuroinvasive disease (disease that affects the nervous system) or encephalitis (an inflammation of the brain) and can include seizures, coma, and paralysis. Long-term disability and death have also been caused by the La Crosse encephalitis virus.  The worst reactions to the virus most often occur in children under the age of 16.

The CDC is now recommending that the public wear mosquito repellent or mosquito bands when spending any length of time around stagnant bodies of water or mosquito prone areas.

Rick Lavin and his business partner Chris Wagner just opened Charlotte’s first moonshine distillery in NoDa’s Area 15 after over a year of overcoming state regulations, financial hurdles, and countless recipe tweaks.

Dragon Moonshine Silver RumThey also announced their ‘Dragon Moonshine Silver Rum’ is now in the ABC distribution warehouse in Raleigh, meaning people can now order it from their local NC ABC store.

In the coming months they’re planning to expand their product lines to offer white lightning moonshine, Apple Pie Moonshine, and an oak-aged whiskey called Full Metal Jacket Whiskey.

In addition to Dragon’s focus on local, all natural and organic ingredients, the company is also US Veteran owned and operated and plans to give a portion of their profits to local Veteran’s charities.

Future plans include extensive distribution throughout Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Maryland, Delaware, South Carolina, New York and New Jersey.

Despite all the incredibly high governmental regulations and red tape, the craft liquor business in North Carolina continues to grow.

North Carolina went from having 5 distilleries in 2012 to about 42 distilleries today. Our state also recently launched the Distillery Association of North Carolina, with over 30 members, they were able to successfully lobby the new state law that allows distillers to sell one bottle of their spirits during tours.

One of Gastonia’s most inspiring restaurants is about to open up a new locally-sourced bakery.

The general manager of the popular Olio’s restaurant, which has a big heart for people with developmental disabilities, is having their grand opening of the new ‘Dances with Scones’ bakery tomorrow at 245 W. Garrison Blvd, in downtown Gastonia.

dances with scones gastonia bakery 1According to their Facebook event, Dances with Scones will feature “items from all over Europe for sale. Jams, Jellies, Caviar, Pastas and so forth. Tea is done by seated Tea Service as well as Coffee, and we have it to go as well. Desserts are all fresh made by Chef John McCall.”

The owner of Olio’s and the new Dances with Scones bakery is passionate about those with disabilities. In the restaurant’s description they note, “the Agencies of Jenny C. Carrington which deal with Developmental Disablities in Adults will be using the restaurant, cafe and shop to help employ her clients, to get them into the work world, give them a sense of accomplishment, & you our customers meet some really wonderful, awesome people!”

Olio’s currently employs 14 people with developmental disabilities, all of whom previously worked in a temporary holiday store Carrington ran at Eastridge Mall.

Dances with Scones should prove to be a positive addition to Gastonia’s increasingly welcoming atmosphere.

CMPD Officers Launch Massive Jaywalking Crackdown in Uptown Charlotte

police jaywalking stop charlotte uptownCMPD officers just handed out over 100 official warnings to pedestrians at one of Uptown Charlotte’s most dangerous intersections – Trade and College, just outside of the Epicenter.

According to police, at least twelve pedestrians have been hit at the intersection over the past five years.

Police not only cracked down on jaywalkers, but also on bad drivers, writing tickets to drivers who make improper turns or failed to yield for pedestrians.

Four drivers were ticketed for driving with a revoked license, three for having no license, one for texting and driving, and six for seat belt violations. One driver was even served a warrant by police.

Yesterday’s jaywalking crack-down campaign was the official Charlotte kickoff for Watch For Me NC, in partnership with the Charlotte Department of Transportation. Watch For Me NC is a statewide pedestrian and bicycle safety program.
