Lake Norman High School Student Found Hanging From A Noose In The Auditorium

lake-norman-high-school-student-suicideOn Thursday morning, a student at Lake Norman High School was rushed to the emergency room after he was discovered by another student hanging from a noose in the school’s auditorium.

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office reported that the student was discovered at around 10 a.m., after which school administrators removed the student from a home-made noose and the school’s nurse provided emergency CPR.

WCNC reporter Tanya Mendis traveled to the school to talk more in-depth with students and faculty:

According to the police, there weren’t any other students involved prior to the discovery, and the school is now back to operating on a normal schedule.

Suicide continues to be a major problem, accounting for thousands of deaths each year in our state. In 2016, the Suicide Resource Prevention Center took over 50,000 calls into their lifeline centers, which is up over 10% from last year.

Yesterday evening, several people around the Charlotte region called police and local news stations saying they saw a large fireball streak across the sky.

The event occurred at about 8:45pm last night and most witnesses recounted seeing the fireball with a long tail moving from the west to the east.

Earl Ayers was one of those witnesses who was also able to capture the event on his “Nest Cam at his home in Cornelius, NC.

The meteor most likely burned up in our atmosphere before making landfall.

Charlotte Doctors Said Jude Wouldn’t Live 2 Weeks – He’s Now About To Turn 3 Years Old

‘SuperJude’ has now been covered by almost every media outlet in Charlotte multiple times, and has been featured on the cover of the NY Times, Huffington Post, and several other major media outlets.

So why all the attention?

Jude Sullivan Peters was diagnosed with one of the most lethal, and rarest diseases in the world – Type 1 RCDP. It’s an extreme form of dwarfism that results in respiratory problems, skeletal abnormalities, shortening of the bones in the arms and legs, and severe developmental disabilities. It’s so rare that doctors and scientists haven’t spent much time researching it, but now, largely due to all the attention Jude has been getting, they’re getting close to a cure.

When he was born, doctors told his parents that he would be lucky to live 2 weeks, on April 17th he will be turning 3 years old.

Former NFL Star Now Building A $12 Million Charter School on Charlotte’s West-Side

Some may know Charlotte resident Casey Crawford as an NFL Super Bowl Champion, others, as the head of the fastest growing mortgage company in America, but now he has his sights set on building Charlotte’s best new charter school.

Movement School will be a new tuition-free public charter school on Charlotte’s west side (most economically depressed corridors in the Queen City) – aimed at drastically increasing upward mobility among youth in the area.

The school is the result of a new alliance between the Movement Foundation, Sugar Creek Charter School, and the state of North Carolina.

Casey Crawford has already allocated $12 million from his foundation to build the school. All of the acedemic programs implimented at the school will be developed by the award winning teachers and administrators at Charlotte’s Sugar Creek Charter School. The State of North Carolina’s new public school charter will be assuring a tuition-free, state-sanctioned education.

Construction started on the new school this past October, with a total projected cost of over $12 million. Leaders from the Sugar Creek Charter School helped The Movement Foundation to apply for a North Carolina for a public school charter, and earlier this year, they were granted their charter by the state of North Carolina.

The school is now set to open in fall 2017 with 300 students starting out in grades K through 2, with additional grades to be added each new year.

Students will apply to Movement School and admissions will be determined by a lottery.

The new Movement School will be tuition free and will offer meals and transportation within a 5 mile radius.

North Carolina’s New House Bill 780 Would Make Same-Sex Marriage Invalid

north-carolina-general-assemblyYesterday a new bill was filed by four North Carolina House Republicans that would basically overrule the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent same sex marriage decision.

The House Bill 780 states that “the United States Supreme Court overstepped its constitutional bounds when it struck down Section 6 of Article XIV of the North Carolina Constitution in its  Obergefell v. Hodges decision of 2015.”

Republican Reps. Larry Pittman of Concord, Michael Speciale of New Bern and Carl Ford of China Grove argue that the U.S. Constitution’s states-rights amendment gives North Carolina the freedom to decide for itself what its marriage laws should be.

The bill goes on to say “the ruling of the United States Supreme Court not only exceeds the authority of the Court relative to the State of North Carolina and a vote of the People of the State on an issue pertaining solely to the State of North Carolina and the People of North Carolina but also exceeds the authority of the Court relative to the decree of Almighty God that “a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24, ESV) and abrogates the clear meaning and understanding of marriage in all societies throughout prior history“.

If the new law were to be passed, it would invalidate all same-sex marriages, and reinstate North Carolina’s ‘Amendment One’, approved in a 2012 voter referendum, which defines marriage as specifically between a man and a woman.

In a couple weeks Compassion International will be coming to Belmont to establish a massive 2,000 square foot “third-world village” to show what some of the world’s most impoverished people have to deal with on a daily basis.

They just released this video showing what visitors will experience in the village:

Mecklenburg County’s New Compost Central Just Opened – The Only Composting Center In Our City

new-new-487Our city’s new Compost Central just celebrated its grand opening today – it’s currently our County’s only composting center, producing a compost product for sale from the yard trimmings received.

Last year over 120,000 tons of yard trimmings were received, mostly from residential curbside collection and landscapers, the new facility will drastically help manage the increasing amount of organic waste, as well as increase the county’s income through the sale of compost.

The new facility joins 3 other recycling centers operated by Mecklenburg County – one in the northern portion of the County (North Mecklenburg Recycling Center), one in the eastern portion of the County (Hickory Grove Recycling Center), and one in the southern portion of the County (Foxhole Recycling Center).

According to CharMeck.org, “All four fully staffed recycling centers accept the same recyclable materials that are collected in the curbside residential programs, as well as household hazardous waste, white goods or appliances, scrap tires, metal, discarded electronics, household garbage and small quantities of construction and demolition waste. The facility collects and processes residential and commercial recyclables, yard trimmings and solid waste.

The young man seems determined to hurt the old man, but several bystandards continue to intervene, then at about 2:50 minutes into the video, the young man gets a truly shocking surprise:

 

The video has already been viewed over 9 million times and shared over 140,000 times in less than 4 days (original post here).

New Charlotte-Based Retailer About To Close All 323 Of Its Stores Nationwide

dollar-general-buying-dollar-expressThe Dollar General just announced that it is buying the entire North Carolina-based Dollar Express Company and plans on shutting down or re-branding all 323 stores in the chain.

Dollar Express is the first dollar-store chain owned by Sycamore Partners – who also own Belk, Coldwater Creek, Hot Topic, and others. The private equity firm quietly purchased 323 Family Dollar stores in August of 2015, and was working on plans to re-brand the stores from Family Dollars to Dollar Expresses before their recent decision to give up and sell to the Dollar General.

According to their recent sale application with the FCC, Sycamore Partners noted that Dollar Express “can no longer operate as a viable standalone business” due to “changes in competitive conditions since the purchase.”

The employees at the two Charlotte-area Dollar Express stores (1437 E. Sugar Creek Road and 5300 South Blvd) will most likely lose their jobs after the stores are sold and shut down.
