Charlotte Planning Massive “Iconic” Pedestrian Bridge Over Independence Blvd and I-77

0

The Charlotte City Council just approved plans to build a new $10 million ‘iconic’ pedestrian bridge over Independence Blvd. (I-74) as part of the Little Sugar Creek Greenway.

According to the city’s plan, “The proposed pedestrian bridge structure requires a shallow superstructure such that minimum vertical clearance over the existing roadways (US74 and I-277) and future light rail can be maintained while adhering to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements (e.g., “the running slope of a pedestrian access route shall be 5 percent maximum”). A visually appealing bridge with a structurally-efficient, state of the art design is desired. High-performance materials, such as high-density polyethylene or low maintenance metal, will be considered to reduce maintenance requirements of the proposed bridge and extend the design life past the 75 years that is typical for current design specifications. The signature bridge can be enhanced with low-energy programmable LED lighting that can be adjusted for holidays, sporting events and various other occasions.”

The city estimates that the entire bridge would cost $12.5 million to construct. If the federal (TIGER) grant program were to be approved, it could cover 80 percent of construction costs.

The bridge would start where 7th Street and McDowell Street intersect and connect two major sections of Charlotte’s greenway. It would allow pedestrians or cyclists to ride or walk from NoDa to Freedom Park without touching a city street.

The idea is to make this a “signature” destination for the city. The designs all include a ‘scenic overlook’ in the middle of the bridge to display one of the most iconic viewing angles of Uptown Charlotte (the shots that are currently taken on top of the Central Ave. bridge).

The city is considering 3 major design concepts for the final bridge;

Design 1

Design 2

Design 3

The final applications for the TIGER grant are due by the end of April.

If Charlotte did get approval for the new pedestrian bridge, the money would have to be used by 2024.

The bridge would be similar in size and length to Omaha’s Bob Kerrey pedestrian bridge that I featured in the beginning of my ‘Tour of Omaha’ video:

What do you think about the new bridge?

Which design do you like best (1, 2, or 3)?

4 US Army Green Berets from North Carolina’s Fort Bragg Killed In Niger

0

The Pentagon has just confirmed that 4 Army Green Berets from North Carolina’s Fort Bragg were killed in action Wednesday night in Niger, Africa.

3 of the soldiers were Staff Sgts. Bryan Black, 35, of Puyallup, Wash.; Jeremiah Johnson, 39, of Springboro, Ohio; and Dustin Wright, 29, of Lyons, Ga., and the 4th has yet to be named. They were killed after their patrol came under attack by a Mali-based militant group.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders held a press briefing to discuss the ambush on U.S. forces in Niger and President Trump’s visit to Las Vegas;

The green berets assigned to the 3rd Special Forces Group at North Carolina’s Fort Bragg Army base – one of the largest military bases in the country. This morning, the Pentagon announced that 3 of the soldiers were killed.

About 6 hours later, they confirmed the 4th;

The group was on a joint patrol with Nigerien soldiers near Mali’s border when they “fell into an ambush set by terrorist elements aboard a dozen vehicles and about twenty motorcycles,” according to a statement from Niger’s army chief of staff.

The soldiers were about to kill 4 and wound 8 more Nigerien soldiers “after intense fighting, during which elements of the joint force showed exemplary courage,” according to the statement.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but both US and Niger officials both suspect ISIS.

Pentagon officials refused to say where it took place or what the mission was, citing “ongoing operations.”

donald-trump-coming-to-north-carolinaThis coming Saturday, October 7th, Air Force One will be flying to North Carolina for President Trump’s latest campaign fundraiser at the home of Businessman Louis DeJoy, in Greensboro, NC.

Public records show that over the last few years, DeJoy has given $111,000 to Trump’s victory fund, $100,000 to the president’s inaugural committee and another $233,000 to the RNC.

The dinner will cost $2,700 for individuals, and $15,000 per couple for ‘preferred seating’ and a VIP reception earlier than or after the president speaks, according to an E-mail invitation.

The invitation also notes that there will be recommended donation ranges of $100,000, $50,000, and $35,000 per couple to help President Trump and the Republican Nationwide Committee with future political campaigns.

DeJoy commented, “The President and his group have had some missteps. Nevertheless, it’s onerous to disclaim the acute and unreasonable challenges he faces from the political institution, the left wing teams, the media and most of the federal staff of the businesses of the Government department.”

Cam Newton Makes Fun Of Female Reporter For Asking About “Routes”

During yesterday’s press conference, Cam Newton responded to a fairly straightforward question in a rather surprising way.

When Charlotte Observer reporter Jourdan Rodrigue asked the star Quarterback about Devin Funchess’ “route running”, Cam paused and said, “it’s funny to hear a female talk about routes. It’s funny.”

He did proceed to answer the question, but that initial reaction is what rang loudest in most people’s ears.

Carolina Panthers spokesman Steven Drummond released a statement saying that Newton expressed regret to Rodrigue after the press conference, however, Rodrigue also released a statement saying that Newton did not apologize in their post-conference conversation.

In her statement, she said she “was dismayed by his response, which not only belittled me but countless other women before me and beside me who work in similar jobs. I sought Mr. Newton out as he left the locker room a few minutes later. He did not apologize for his comments.”

She also tweeted out a response to Cam’s reaction after the press conference, which has already been retweeted over 12,000 times, and has over 2,800 replies;

Scott Leanord had one of the most ‘liked’ responses that defended Rodrigue;

…and most other commenters came to her defense;

however, there were also many people who didn’t think the comment was a big deal;

What do you think about Cam’s statement?

North Carolina Man Punches Cyclist In The Face For Riding On The Road (Video)

0

A dash cam just happened to catch the moment a cyclist was assaulted by an angry motorist this past week.

As a man was pulling up to a stop light, he noticed the driver of a truck walking toward a cyclist in front of him, then suddenly, he punched the man in the face.

The entire minute-long altercation was uploaded to YouTube:

The website AshevilleonBikes.com first released the video and details about the encounter after speaking to the cyclist;

“The cyclist had been riding legally within his lane on a two lane section of Sand Hill road. Because the section of road just prior to this intersection is a long downhill, the cyclist was able to ride at the pace of traffic and was not, to any degree, causing a backup of traffic. The driver of the truck tailgated the cyclist during this time, and, because of line painting crews in the oncoming lane, was unable to pass until he neared the intersection in the video. While accelerating around the cyclist, the driver attempted to run the cyclist off the road by aggressively entering the cyclist’s travel lane to the point the cyclist had to brake and swerve to avoid being hit. Moments later the truck and cyclist rolled up to the red light that is shown in the video. The only words spoken occurred after the punches were thrown, when the driver said, “Get off the f****** road.””

The video and license plate number of the driver was then reported to the Ashville Police Department.

According to the APD, the motorist, Claude Donald Watson, was arrested Sept. 29 and charged with simple assault and reckless driving to endanger (misdemeanour charges).

Please watch out for and be patient with cyclists – the roads were built for them too!
