The Mosaic of Diversity: Minority Business Growth

0

“People may be said to resemble not the bricks of which a house is built, but the pieces of a picture, each differing in shape, but matching the rest, and thus bringing out the picture.”

  • Felix Adler (1851-1933), professor of political and social ethics and founder of the American Ethical Movement

In recent years I’ve given a lot of thought to what I view as a disenfranchised business community. As seen in Charlotte’s business arena, diversity appeared to be an issue that simply wasn’t addressed in what Ron Leeper describes as a “good-old-boy system.” Repeatedly I have found myself meditating on what the word “diversity” actually means. The Oxford Dictionary defines diversity simply as “variety.” To African-American organizations and associations, diversity is seen as an effort to make sure there is a greater representation of black entrepreneurs in the business culture. In this sense, diversity is more about equal economic opportunities. Overall, recognizing diversity can be the first step in a process that must lead to inclusion.

In a pursuit to understand what “diversity” means, Felix Adler’s description of “pieces of a picture puzzle” can provide a convenient framework around which to assemble the various views of diversity. As city leaders voice their concerns about disparities, this goes back to a question posed by former business columnist Ron Stodghill, “what is the real goal: Is it protect the Charlotte brand from negative publicity or to build a stronger, more diverse business community?” If the latter is the case, what does this mean for minority business growth?

“The Vision for Minority Business Growth,” also known as the 7-0-4 Plan is a revolutionary campaign to promote diversity and inclusiveness in the Charlotte, North Carolina business community. The movement is positioning itself as an initiative for growing minority businesses in the local community. The program’s purpose also looks to expand to enrich the lives and future of our youth by leveraging unconventional ideas. The 7-0-4 Plan, a community-based project, is founded upon five guiding economic ideas to foster entrepreneurship. The mission is to establish its presence as a trendsetting social media campaign designed to build support for a diverse business community via an infrastructure around minority entrepreneurs.

Execution of the 7-0-4 Plan would promote diversity and inclusiveness in the Charlotte business community and put the city on the fast track to explosive job growth and increased tax revenue base. The aim is to develop citywide resources and bring renewed economic growth and vitality through urban entrepreneurship. Through this campaign, we now have an unparalleled chance to spark minority business growth and to build a stronger, more diverse business community.

Which Sectors Could See Growth in Charlotte in the 2020s?

0

Over the last few years, the largest city in the state in North Carolina, has continued to grow across a wide array of different industries, including, for example, real estate. However, while there have already been indications that the city is continuing to develop, there are several broader markets that could see significant levels of growth throughout the coming years.

As a result, we’re going to look at a couple of sectors that could develop in Charlotte in the 2020s.

Online Gambling Market

Throughout the United States, the laws on online gambling vary depending on state legislation. In North Carolina, the rules regarding this sector are currently somewhat conservative as the region itself has continued to fight against the widespread legalization of any kind of permitted gambling throughout its history.

Although some believe that the US is opening up to the potential benefits that come with legalizing this sector, online gambling doesn’t seem to be coming soon to Charlotte, as the state of North Carolina is strictly governed in this industry. However, there have been numerous pieces of legislation which have attempted to enhance the acceptance and clarity surrounding gambling markets throughout the US.

Regulation Changes in the US

The Wire Act, which was first introduced back in 1961, has recently been revised following the growth of digitalization and the continued evolution of the online gambling industry. Because the act can now be applied to all forms of gambling, there is far less confusion regarding the sector’s widespread legality. Moreover, and perhaps more crucially, is the reversal of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992. The Supreme Court reversed the act’s restrictive nature and allowed New Jersey to pass its own gambling laws in 2018, allowing local people to legally place bets from their own homes.

While there is little to suggest that North Carolina and, in particular, Charlotte will soften its stance in relation to its gambling laws, the development of the sector in other states suggests that, in time, it’s not impossible for the most populous city in North Carolina to see growth of its own in this field throughout the 2020s.

Soccer

One sector that certainly looks well set to enjoy sustained growth throughout the next decade is the soccer industry. On the 17th of December, it was officially announced that Charlotte would finally be getting its own Major League Soccer team. One of the main reasons for the state being chosen as the franchise’s 30th club is, by the admission of the MLS commission Don Garber, as a result of the enormous energy and growth that Charlotte has experienced.

After the MLS decided to further the expansion of the franchise from 26 teams in 2020 to 30 in 2021, Charlotte instantly became one of the frontrunners for a place in the league. In recent times, the popularity of top-flight soccer in the US has been on the rise and, following the new-found respect that spectators have for the franchise and its future plans, the league has averaged attendances of more than 22,000 fans during the 2018-19 season, which is a new record.

The inclusion of Charlotte in the MLS is testament to the city’s continued development throughout the last few years. While it’s clear that the soccer industry is growing in popularity across the entirety of the US, the inclusion of Charlotte within the franchise could also see the sector grow significantly from a local standpoint during the 2020s.

A Future of Unknown Potential

Ultimately, the upcoming decade could be one of immense growth for Charlotte. As soccer in Charlotte looks set to reach new, unprecedented heights, the regulations surrounding online gambling remain less likely to change any time soon.

Although the reversal of existing legislation has altered the outlook of gambling within New Jersey, alterations to the laws within Charlotte appear unlikely – albeit, however, not impossible.

US Sending Thousands More North Carolina Troops in Anticipation of “harsh retaliation” by Iran

0

The United States is now sending an additional 3,000 North Carolina troops from Fort Bragg’s 83nd Airborne Division to the Middle East after yesterday’s killing of General Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force, officials told ABC’s WXII.

This news comes just 2 days after hundreds of troops were sent to Iraq in the midst of rising tensions.

Today’s decision to send thousands more troops is in anticipation of a possible retaliatory attack by Iran, or by one of its proxies or allies in the region.

After last night’s attack by the US, Iran vowed that “harsh retaliation is waiting” for the United States.

North Carolina Spending Millions To Close the Digital Divide in 2020

0

While it may seem that internet is universal, there are still areas of North Carolina that lack the infrastructure, called broadband, to support high-speed internet in addition to residents who lack the technology to use it. This access—to infrastructure and to devices– is critical for children to complete homework assignments, for farmers and other businesses to run their operations and for providers to deliver improved healthcare for our residents.

The N.C. Department of Information Technology’s (NCDIT) Broadband Infrastructure Office (BIO) is working to close this digital divide and made great strides in 2019 to achieve its goal that every resident has access to affordable, high-speed internet at all times.

“Access to broadband is a life-line and a critical piece in North Carolina residents’ making meaningful connections in order to live a healthier and more fulfilling life,” said Eric Boyette, DIT secretary and state chief information officer. “We’re going to use the momentum we’ve created this past year to help even more residents in 2020.”

Governor Roy Cooper demonstrated his commitment to this goal by issuing Executive Order 91(EO 91) and establishing the Governor’s Task Force on Connecting North Carolina. EO 91 directs state government leaders to work collaboratively to identify and remove barriers to affordable, high-speed internet access, eliminate the homework gap that results from students not having internet access, and facilitate private-sector deployment of last-mile infrastructure.

BIO made significant progress toward this goal by awarding the first round of grants through the Growing Rural Economies with Access to Technology (GREAT) program, which allows internet service providers and electric membership cooperatives to compete for funding to lower financial barriers that prevent broadband expansion in rural communities. Nearly $10 million was awarded to 20 broadband service providers to facilitate the deployment of broadband service in 19 Tier One counties. Of the 13 companies receiving funding, 11 are NC-based small businesses, telephone cooperatives and an electric membership cooperative. With more than $6 million in matching funds from the providers, around $16 million in total investment will bring service to more than 10,000 households, businesses, agricultural operations and community institutions such as libraries, schools and hospitals. The N.C. General Assembly approved and Gov. Cooper signed legislation providing an additional $30 million for grants through June 2021 to continue the program.

In addition to physically expanding broadband access, digital inclusion is critical to closing the digital divide. This includes ensuring residents have equal access to digital resources, technology and the skills needed to use them. BIO is an active partner in the NC Digital Equity and Inclusion Collaborative and works diligently to level the playing field for N.C. residents. Notable achievements in digital inclusion efforts this year include:

  • In early 2019, BIO partnered with the NC Department of Health & Human Services’ Office of Rural Health (ORH) to secure a $98,273 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) POWER fund to investigate and identify gaps, challenges and opportunities in the existing telehealth infrastructure resources in 20 western N.C. counties and explore how to better use technology to improve health and healthcare in the region.
  • In March, BIO published “The Homework Gap in North Carolina,” a report that provides communities and state and local policymakers with strategies to bridge the homework gap that occurs when students are assigned homework that requires internet access but lack an internet connection at home. The report was developed in conjunction with The William & Ida Friday Institute for Educational Innovation at North Carolina State University.
  • BIO and The State Library of North Carolina won a $250,000 two-year grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and to launch a pilot program to address the homework gap. The program, which began in Robeson County in January, provided digital literacy workshops to 34 families. In July, the program expanded to include four counties, and 62 families have attended workshops.
  • As a result of Gov. Cooper’s Hometown Strong program to support rural communities, NCDIT and the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, home to the State Library, partnered with nine library systems and four municipalities for a pilot program to improve internet access in rural communities. Each of the libraries received $35,000 to purchase equipment such as Wi-Fi hotspots or computers to make available to students or other library patrons for home use. Communities were able to use the funds at their discretion to shape a program that best fit their needs.

BIO further affirmed its commitment to increasing rural broadband by developing a survey and speed test for farmers in partnership with the North Carolina Farm Bureau (NCFB). The survey and speed test will gather data that will provide a clear picture of current connections and speeds available at farms and pinpoint those that lack sufficient connectivity to run their business with 21st-century technology. BIO and NCFB will use this information to develop connectivity solutions for farmers, both in their offices and in the fields.

This project followed the launch of BIO’s Broadband Speed Test, a self-reporting tool that allows residents and businesses to report the actual speeds they receive at home or at work. This tool allows for better mapping of areas of the state that unserved or underserved by broadband providers.

As part of its services, BIO provides a technical assistance team as an on-the-ground resource to work with counties and communities across the state to provide needed broadband expertise. Over the past year, this team aided 70 counties with planning and resource identification, including all 36 counties included in Gov. Roy Cooper’s Hometown Strong program, a partnership between state agencies and local leaders to champion rural communities.

In addition, BIO launched the FirstTech initiative to support state and local public safety and emergency response organizations with identifying emerging communications technologies. It is also monitoring the build out of FirstNet, the nation-wide wireless broadband public safety communications network.

BIO is gearing up for an exciting 2020 that builds upon the success of the past year.

The North Carolina Department of Information Technology’s Broadband Infrastructure Office leads the statewide initiative to expand high-speed internet access for all North Carolinians.

White Nationalist From Charlottesville Rally Arrested For Armed Kidnapping in Rock Hill

0

One of the main speakers from the deadly 2017 “Unite The Right” white supremacy rally in Charlottesville has just been arrested for the armed kidnapping of his family in Rock Hill.

The White nationalist and ex-Senate candidate Augustus Sol Invictus was arrested yesterday in Brevard County, Florida on charges of kidnapping, high and aggravated domestic violence, and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s office.

The charges stem from an incident that occured on December 12th when Invictus allegedly kidnapped his wife and children at gunpoint from their home in Rock Hill. He then allegedly took the kidnap victims to Florida where they managed to escape and called the police.

Invictus is now being held in jail without bond and is facing an extradition back to South Carolina.

Why Vegan Diet is Good for Students’ Cognitive Skills

0

The world is once again turned on its head with a new diet, but this time, there might actually be some truth in the mix. Vegan diets and veganism as a whole has grown tremendously over the last couple of years and with the help of social media, the benefits of a vegan diet have turned the dietary world on its head.

If you had to write an assignment on vegans, you would have more than enough scientific work to chew through. Needless to say, a vegan diet is not just good for your body, but also for your brain. Here are a couple of reasons why students should give a vegan diet a go.

The complexity of the brain

It is said that we know more about the start of the universe that we know of the human brain. It is an immensely complex organ of which we have only begun to scratch the surface of in terms of our understanding of how it works.

Some people struggle with writing ideas and for some, abstract thought is as natural as breathing. This does not mean that we have no clue on how to improve brain function.

You need to give it a small break, feed it with nutrition and set aside complex work like writing a thesis or a dissertation. For that, you can google ‘how to start an assignment introduction examples’ and get assignment assistance from expert writers online. The trained writers can do quality writing work for you with minimum disturbance to you.

Although there are some vitamins and nutrients that we know of that is associated with better brain function, the conditions under which our brain performs better is better known. For instance, you are not going to figure out how to write assignment in APA style when you are fatigued and tired. You need a clear head to perform at your best.

Vegan energy

You might have all the cognitive boosting nutrients in the world, but if your energy levels are low, your cognitive abilities will suffer. Following a vegan diet for developing skills is not a bad idea because it is associated with higher energy levels and better sleep. Learning how to write an assignment could be a lot easier if you feel up to the task.

It almost seems counter-productive if you think that animal-based diets make you drowsy because it takes so much energy to digest the proteins and animal fats. Eating lots of nuts, legumes, quinoa and whole grains give you much more energy and does not take nearly as much energy to digest.

More energy means that you feel brighter and more focused. This could then lead to better brain function and you’ll be in a much better condition to write my assignment.

The Vitamin B12 conundrum

The one thing that vegan diets lack is Vitamin B12. This vitamin is very important for brain function because it helps with the oxygenation of red blood cells that give your brain the necessary oxygen to function.

Plants don’t have vitamin B12 because it does not need it, so they don’t store it either. For someone who is on a vegan diet, it is important to get a good dose of vitamin B12, but they will have to settle for a supplement rather than a specific food.

Not all B12 complexes are equal, though. Cyanocobalamin is the most common form of B12, but it is also one of the forms to avoid. The main reason is that it mostly doesn’t get absorbed by the body and it produces cyanide while converting it to a useful form. Methylcobalamin, on the other hand, is an acceptable form of B12 that the body can absorb.

Vegan sleep and mood

As mentioned earlier, the brain needs the right conditions, just as much as the right nutrients to function properly. When you go on a vegan diet, you get in much more of the nutrients that make you feel better than an animal-based diet. Vegan foods are packed with serotonin, tryptophan and melatonin which are imperative for a good night’s rest.

What’s more is that a vegan diet improves one’s mood and general state of being. The research suggests that a vegan diet decreases one’s stress as well. When you are less stressed and you are in a good mood, you are less prone to distraction and able to focus more.

An added benefit of a vegan diet is that your mood stays more constant seeing that your food intake is much more constant. The foods you eat are generally free from other harmful chemicals as well, which means your body doesn’t need to contend with other toxins the whole time.

Conclusion

As we move towards a vegan diet grows, the benefits also increase. More and more research is being done and as the diet is explored further, the direct and indirect benefits are more clear. Although you might be cutting out some nutrients, you can supplement them with natural alternatives that don’t involve animals. The benefits of a vegan diet have turned the dietary world on its head. But what’s really frustrating is that choosing a vegan gift for someone is never easy, if you click here you will see a number of vegetarian gift ideas that already have built a high-quality reputation.

The one certain thing is that your overall health will improve and that means that your cognitive functions will also improve. As the saying goes, a healthy body houses a healthy mind.

Should We Bring Motorcycle Chariot Racing Back to Charlotte?

0

I just stumbled on an interesting tidbit of Charlotte sports history involving what has to be one of the most epic and ridiculous sports of all time – Motorcycle Chariot Racing.

The sport involves 1 or more unmanned motorcycles tethered with ropes to a stand-up chariot, giving racers more unique maneuverability and acceleration on the track than traditional motorcycle racing. It was first born in Australia in the 1920s and quickly expanded to Europe and America.

There’s evidence that Motorcycle Chariot Racing took place at the original ‘Charlotte Motor Speedway’, which was an old wooden track built in 1924 to host Indy Car and Motorcycle races.

via lib.unc.edu

The old track was constructed in Pineville near the corner of what is now South Blvd. and 485 (currently the home of CarMax and Mazda of South Charlotte).

Now that we are once again in ‘the 20s’, do you think it’s time to bring Motorcycle Chariot Racing back to the Queen City?
