The bank has signed an 11-year lease for 40,000 sqft of office space in Uptown’s One Independence Center Building at the corner of Trade and Tryon.

So it takes a special veteran to sign with an expansion team. That’s what Sam Mills, a long-time star with the New Orleans Saints, did back in 1995. That year, Sam Mills signed a two-year deal with the newly-minted Carolina Panthers.

The following year, Sam Mills got named to the Pro Bowl for the fifth time in his career at 37. He then retired, capping off an NFL career that spanned 12 seasons.

Cancer, Meet Sam Mills

But the most dramatic (and sadly, final) chapter of Mills’ life came after his playing days were over.

After hanging up his cleats for good, Sam Mills joined the Panthers coaching staff as a linebacker coach. But in 2003, Mills was diagnosed with intestinal cancer. He was given months to live, but opted to keep coaching.

The Carolina Panthers rallied around Mills, making it to the Super Bowl for the first time. Those few months turned into a few years, but on April 18, 2005, cancer finally took down Mills.

After 17 years since his passing, he was finally inducted to the Hall of Fame on 6 August as part of the Class of 2022.

It’s tough enough to crack a professional lineup, as there’s no shortage of talented athletes out there. And then, there’s the physical aspect of football that cuts many careers short.

The latter convinced star linebacker Kuechly to retire at the age of 28. But while chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain condition caused by repeated blows to the head, abruptly ended Kuechly’s career, he accomplished much in his eight seasons with the Panthers. Before devastating injuries sidelined him permanently, Kuechly was on pace to become one of the most dominant linebackers in NFL history.

During his rookie season, he took the NFL by storm, leading it in tackles (!) and winning the Associated Press 2012 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award. The following year, his torrid pace continued, becoming the youngest ever recipient of the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award.

When he was forced to retire, Kuechly had notched seven Pro Bowl, five First-Team All-Pro, and two Second-Team All-Pro selections – all in eight brief seasons. His short career may work against him, but his impressive resume will make him a Hall of Fame contender for years to come.

Cam Newton, Quarterback

Now, Newton is still playing. But if the others on this list (somehow) don’t get selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame soon, he will be a shoo-in.

He began his career by re-writing the rookie record books for passing and rushing. And since his first year, he has become one of the most dominant quarterbacks in the league. After months of delay, Charlotte’s legendary Epicenter entertainment complex will finally be auctioned off to the highest bidder today.

The original date of the foreclosure auction was set for May 12th, then was extended to July 26th, and finally to today, August 9th, according to court records.

The owners of the 1-city-block facility defaulted on their $85 million loan with Deutsche Bank last August.

When proceedings first began last year, the court forced the owners, Epicentre SPE, to give over full control to CBRE Inc through a court-order receivership.

According to the latest receiver’s report, the Epicentre includes a total of 50 tenant spaces encompassing roughly 302,324 square feet.

In collaboration with Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont, Charlotte Premium Outlets, Concord Mills and SouthPark Mall invite shoppers from August 8-26 to drop off their denim-exclusive clothing including jeans, jackets, shirts, skirts and more to be recycled as part of the “Do Good With Denim” drive. Individuals can promote their donations and encourage others to do the same by using the #dogoodwithdenim hashtag on their social channels. Charlotte Premium Outlets:

WHAT: Back to School Bash at Charlotte Premium Outlets 

  • On August 20, shoppers are encouraged to come out to Charlotte Premium Outlets for a family-friendly Back to School Bash ahead of a new school year! While making their back-to-school purchases, shoppers can enjoy onsite live music and a DJ, cotton candy, ice cream, face painting and more to soak up those last days of summer. 
  • And, shoppers who spend $250 at select retailers will get $20 in Simon rewards to spend at their convenience! You can find participating retailers at Charlotte Premium’s website or social pages.

Concord Mills shoppers can clean out their closets and be good to the planet all in one day by bringing any type of denim apparel items to Simon Guest Services during mall hours August 8-26! Donors will receive a back-to-school swag bag while supplies last and access to Simon’s digital coupon book worth over 40 offers totaling hundreds of dollars in savings!

SouthPark Mall:

WHAT: New Year, New Vibes for Back To School at SouthPark Mall 

  • On August 26, SouthPark will hold a back-to-school shopping event in Center Court where kids can deck out their new backpacks at a fun backpack swag tagging station with beads, keychains and more! Smiley G, the Goodwill mascot, will also be onsite from 1-3 p.m.
  • Shoppers can refuel after a long day of shopping with cookies from Suarez Bakery and make memories (aka take selfies) at the blue jean backdrop photo station complete with colorful balloons! 
  • SouthPark employees will also be delivering “Teacher Emergency Kits” with all the BTS SOS goodies like wipes, hand sanitizer and Advil to teachers at Sharon Elementary as they get ready to welcome back students later in the month.

The Carolinas Have The Highest Interest in Remote Work in America

With employees being asked to return to the office despite not all workers being ready to give up the remote lifestyle, the business software website TodayTesting has released its report on 2022’s States & Cities Most Interested in Remote Work, with mapped data, charts, and expert commentary provided.

TodayTesting worked together with a data science consulting firm to analyze and compare changes in interest in remote work across all 50 states and many major metropolitan areas across the US, looking at Google search trends and publicly available data.

According to the report, North Carolina and South Carolina had the highest increase in remote job interest since the start of the Pandemic.
