Chick-fil-A Is Introducing A New Menu Item in Charlotte – The “Hash Brown Scramble”

hashbrownscramblebowlresizedIn a press release sent out yesterday, Chick-fil-A has just announced the introduction of a brand new breakfast item for all Chick-fil-A locations in the greater Charlotte region – the “Hash Brown Scramble”.

“At Chick-fil-A, we understand the importance of breakfast and want to provide a wide range of options to our guests who are looking for a fast and delicious breakfast,” said Amanda Norris, senior director of menu development. “We’ve definitely seen an increase in popularity for breakfast bowls, and the Hash Brown Scramble combines two fan favorites – our chicken nuggets and hash browns. It is a great fit for those seeking a delicious and hearty breakfast that is also packed with protein.”

The Hash Brown Scramble joins the menu nationwide following successful tests in several markets in 2016 and 2017. The Hash Brown Scramble Burrito will replace the current Breakfast Burrito.

The Scramble includes scrambled eggs, cheddar, Monterrey Jack, spicy jalapeno sausage, and Chick-fil-A’s “tot”-style hash browns;

Chick-fil-A’s new Hash Brown Scramble joins their other popular breakfast offerings including; the Chicken Biscuit (a fried chicken filet in a biscuit), the Egg White Grill (a breakfast sandwich with egg whites and grilled chicken) and the Breakfast Platter (scrambled eggs, a biscuit, and either a fried chicken breast filet or a slice of pork sausage.)

The Charlotte School of Law Is Out Of Business – Effective Immediately

charlotte_school_of_lawAccording to a mass E-mail sent by the Charlotte School of Law’s Alumni Association to all former students, the school has just shut down for good.

The email noted that the Alumni Association had received a message from Interim Dean Paul Meggett stating that the American Bar Association had officially denied the law school’s Teach-Out Plan and that the North Carolina Board of Governors refused to extend the law school’s license to operate. Those two blows, combined with last December’s government funding cuts, means the school no longer has a Bar license, business license, or any money to contiue opperations.

“I am deeply saddened and profoundly frustrated by this news. I was very hopeful that our law school would be able to regain the confidence of the ABA, the BOG, its students and its alumni,” commented Lee Robertson, the president of the Charlotte School of Law Alumni Association.

Current students are now forced with choosing between trying to transfer to another law school in another city (with a new semester only 2 weeks away), or lose all of the credit hours they have earned.

Amazon Building $85 Million Distribution Center in Kannapolis – Creating 600 Jobs For The Region

Amazon has just finalized plans to build a new $85 million, 1 million sq.ft. foot distribution center in Kannapolis, bringing 600 new jobs to the region.

The facility will be built on 117 acres near the intersection of N.C. Highway 73 and Kannapolis Parkway, thanks in large part to a newly approved incentive grant by the city of Kannapolis for $562,275.

This new expansion is in line with Amazon’s recent moves to invest heavily in its order-fulfillment capabilities, opening more warehouses and expanding same-day delivery. They currently operate 48.3 million square feet in North America, in 96 total distribution centers.

amazon same day delivery charlotteThe increased investments make sense when you consider that Amazon spent $8.6 billion on order fulfillment last year, which was almost double the $4.6 billion the company spent on order fulfillment just a few years ago in 2011.

Their new expansion tactics will allow them to cut out UPS and FedEx and their distribution networks. Once they complete their own full-scale distribution network, Amazon will be able to keep goods in its network until they’re almost at their destination, then use the U.S. Postal Service for the last leg of delivery. They have even been talking about even using flying drones to deliver the goods to their client’s door steps in the near future.

Amazon’s newest distribution center in Kannapolis is now expected to open sometime in 2019.

$100,000 Study Of I77 Toll Lane Project Released – Giving New Hope To Opponents

i77 - toll road construction stoppedThe $100,000 independent study of the I-77 toll lane contract has just completed and released by Mercator Advisors LLC. The study was originally commissioned by the NCDOT back in April after the overwhelmingly negative public outcry over the toll lanes.

The study appears to give some new hope to the fight against the tolls.

The study found that the NCDOT failed to give the public adequate time to comment on the toll lanes plan before the 26-mile project began. It also questions the assumptions made by the NCDOT that general purpose lanes would have cost $500 million to build and that tolls were the only viable option for widening I77.

Mercator notes in their report that the overwhelming public opinion against the toll lanes project “has undermined confidence” in the future viability of the toll lane project.

The study now recommends 5 policy options for the NCDOT to consider, including:

a. Terminate the Comprehensive Agreement and complete the Express Lanes Project using public funding or financing as it becomes available.

b. Terminate the Comprehensive Agreement and allow CRTPO to determine whether express lanes should remain in the transportation plan or be replaced or supplemented with other improvements based on available resources.

c. Negotiate modifications to the project scope and/or the terms of the CA, such as:

  • Deferring or eliminating tolling of certain lanes,
  • Reducing the financial impact on frequent users,
  • Revising the truck restrictions to allow larger vehicles that can use the express lanes safely,
  • Encouraging greater use of the express lanes by allowing HOV-2 for some period of time, or
  • Modifying the compensation provisions for unplanned revenue impacting facilities.

d. Work with CRTPO to identify and advance additional improvements to address mobility issues in the corridor.

e. Develop preliminary plans to negotiate and finance the purchase of the Express Lanes Project after completion.

The study does note that canceling Cintra’s $660 million contract could cost the state upwards of $300 million in fees, however, the state would not be required to pay any fees to Cintra, which NCDOT has been arguing for years.

The NCDOT is now seeking public feedback about the study, which they will use to compile a final report after considering all options. Public feedback can be submitted to i77feedback@ncdot.gov and is due by Sept. 9.

Dozens of Protesters Tear Down Confederate Statue In North Carolina

protestors-smash-confederate-statue-in-durhamLast night several dozen protesters gathered around a Confederate statue in front of Durham’s old courthouse to speak out against the violent protests in Charlottesville over the weekend.

At about 7:10 p.m. a woman climbed a ladder up the statue attached a rope to the bronze figure, moments later, the crowd pulled the statue down and began to kick the toppled monument.

Here’s a video of the event;

The statue of an unnamed Confederate soldier was erected in 1924, the inscription at its base stated, “The Confederate States of America.”

Durham police later released a statement saying that they were monitoring the protest to make sure it was ‘safe’, but allowed it to continue since it was on county property.

“Because this incident occurred on county property, where county law enforcement officials were staffed, no arrests were made by DPD officers,” Durham Police spokesman Wil Glenn noted.

Governor Cooper commented that ‘there is a better way to remove these monuments’;

Durham County officials issued the following statement regarding the toppling of the statue:

Our elected officials and senior staff understand the unrest in our nation and community, particularly following the senseless acts that took place in Charlottesville, VA. We share the sentiments of many communities around the nation that admonish hate and acts of violence as we believe civility is necessary in our every action and response. Governmental agencies dedicated to public safety will continue to work collectively to ensure Durham remains a community of excellence where all of our residents can live peacefully, grow and thrive.

Several other convederate monuments and statues continue to stand across our state.

nazi-flag-in-mount-holly-ncAfter several people posted a picture of a Nazi flag being flown outside of a Mt. Holly house, one Charlotte woman decided to investigate for herself.

Page Braswell researched the location of the home online, drove to the Mount Holly neighborhood, and started recording a cellphone video as she approached the white house on the corner of Forestway Drive.

Joe Love, the owner of the home, became furious when she started questioning him about the flag, “I’m not a Nazi…this is Nazi f***ing America.”

Here is the full cell phone video from Page Braswell, which has now been viewed over 200,000 times and shared over 4,000 times (WARNING: Graphic Language);

 

According to the Gaston Gazette, Love first started flying his Nazi flag earlier this month after his other confederate flags were stolen.

“I put three different flags out here, which were all Confederate flags,” he said. “Every one of them got stolen. I put this one up, nobody wants it.”

He noted that the swastika symbol “used to be a religious symbol in India until Hitler got ahold of it. A lot of people don’t know that… I agree with the symbol as it started out as a religious symbol. But as far as backing Hitler and being a white supremacist and Hitler, I’m not into that.”

He also said that it’s his freedom to fly whatever flag he wants. “A lot of folks died to give me the right to do what I want to do. We don’t support our veterans enough.”

He promised to replace the Nazi flag with another Confederate flag today, as long as it’ll “make the world a better place.”

August 14th – Molina Healthcare Back-to-School Bash

Today the Molina Healthcare Group of South Carolina will be hosting their annual Back-to-School Bash, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Monday at Tri-County Pediatrics, 815 E. Liberty St., York. The event is open to the public; 200 drawstring bags of school supplies will be given away. First come basis.

August 19th – Derita Back-To-School Backpack Event

This coming Saturday, the Derita Athletic Association is hosting a free Back to School Backpack Giveaway Event at 4920 West Sugar Creek Road from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will feature;

  • Free food
  • 5,000 water balloons
  • bouncy houses
  • haircuts
  • Live DJ

Children must be in attendance to receive their free school supplies.

August 25th-27th – Festival of the McCrorey

McCrorey YMCA, at 3801 Beatties Ford Road, is hosting Festival of McCrorey, a 3-day FREE celebration for the community, from August 25th to August 27th from 1-4pm each day

The event will feature a pool party for teens, group exercise, a family fun fest, an outdoor movie and free haircuts for kids. There will be food trucks, face painting, back-to-school giveaways and more.

Justin Thomas Comes From Behind To Win His First Major PGA Championship In Charlotte

24-year-old Justin Thomas just won the first major victory of his career at the conclusion of Quail Hollow’s first major championship yesterday.

At the start of the tournament, most experts were betting on Jason Day, Rory McIlroy, or Jordan Spieth (this would have been his 4th major victory, making him the youngest golfer ever to ever win a ‘grand slam’), especially after Spieth’s remarkable victory at the Open Championship last month at Royal Birkdale.

At the end of the yesterday’s round, the final scores painted a very different picture from what the experts predicted (Rory McIlroy didn’t even make it into the top 10);

Justin Thomas closed his final day in Charlotte with a solid three-under-par 68 on a Quail Hollow course that proved to be surprisingly unpredictable. With a total of eight-under 276 for all 4 days, he finished two strokes ahead of the runners-up: Francesco Molinari and Patrick Reed, who both finished Sunday’s round with 67s, and Louis Oosthuizen, the 2010 British Open champion, who finished with a 70.

Several Hundred Gather In Uptown Charlotte In A United ‘Vigil for Charlottesville’

Over 500 people gathered in Uptown Charlotte’s Marshall Park last night to ‘stand against the hate’ of Saturday’s protests in Charlottesville, Virginia.

During the “Vigil for Charlottesville”, several speakers openly condemned the violence that resulted in several injuries and the death of 32-year-old Heather Heyer. The vigil was organized by Indivisible Charlotte, a group that describes themselves as ‘Resisting the Trump Agenda’.

The event started at 8pm last night – hundreds had already gathered within the first 15 minutes of the vigil;

People carried American flags, wore patriotic clothing, and carried picket signs with messages of unity;

Speakers included Scott Huffman, the leader of Indivisible Charlotte, a US marine, an Islamic Iman, and a German woman who survived the Holocaust;

Charlotte’s Mayor Jennifer Roberts also spoke to the crowd about unity in Charlotte and ‘opposing Trump’s agenda’.

“When he said it was all side’s fault, he was wrong,” she commented. “His comments are wrong.”

Charlotte Construction Workers Tie-Up Thief Onto Scaffolding in Shocking Citizen’s Arrest (Video)

Several construction workers in Uptown Charlotte took the law into their own hands this past week after an alleged thief tried to steal from their work truck.

Yolian Ortiz posted the cell-phone footage of the workers were tying up the man to some scaffolding to wait for police.

“I gotta do what I gotta do to hold you. You got no business in my truck,” one of the construction workers said.

The citizen arrest tactics successfully held the man until CMPD officers arrived to take him into custody.
