This North Carolina Beach Is Now Ranked The 2nd Best Beach in America

0

Planning to take a relaxing beach trip this summer? One North Carolina beach was recently ranked as the #2 best beach in the country.

Ocracoke Lifeguarded Beach in North Carolina’s Outer Banks came in just behind Kapalua Bay Beach; Maui, Hawaii (#1) and just ahead of Grayton Beach State Park, Florida (#3)

According to the site, “Ocracoke, once the home of Blackbeard the pirate, is still a special place—it is my favorite getaway beach.  Here you will find some of the wildest beaches in the country.  Big surf dominates in late summer so families with children may want to come earlier in the year.  Don’t expect to play golf or stay at the Ritz; the main pursuits are swimming and beachcombing.”

Charlotte Sees Its First April Snowfall In Over 30 Years

0

Charlotte saw one of the latest snowfalls in history. This morning we received a total accumulation of about 0.1 inches in Charlotte, with even more falling in the southeastern part of our region, especially in Matthews, Waxhaw, and Monroe.

The first flakes were spotted at about 6:30am and many continued falling around the Charlotte area until about 10:00am.

Snow was visible on most lawns but it never really got cold enough to stick to the blacktop.

Even though it didn’t cover the roads, however, NCDOT wasn’t taking any chances;

and even though schools weren’t canceled, the kids still loved the Spring dusting;

This is the first time in 37 years it’s snowed this late into Spring. The latest date on record for snowfall in Charlotte was on May 2nd.

What did you think of today’s snowfall?

National Weather Service Predicting A 52% Chance of Snow In Charlotte Today

0

Even though the flowers are blossoming, the trees are budding, and temperatures have been in the high 70s, winter isn’t quite done here in Charlotte.

According to the National Weather Service, “A low-pressure system developing along the South Carolina coast may produce scattered snow showers across the region this morning before the showers dissipate by early afternoon. The best chance of any snow accumulations will be in locations mainly south and east of Charlotte.”

Weather Underground is showing the likely window for snowfall in Charlotte occuring between 7am-9am this morning;

If we do see snow today, it likely won’t stay on the ground for more than a couple hours…however…this won’t stop most Charlotte drivers from slowing way down.

Prepare for longer commute times this morning.

FBI Releases New Warning About ‘Fake Kidnapping’ Scam

0

The FBI has just sent out a new warning, urging people to hang up on any calls from a woman screaming for help.

According to a press released from the FBI, the ‘fake kidnapping’ scheme works like this;

“Fraudsters will choose an affluent area such as Beverly Hills, California. They would search the Internet to learn the correct area code and telephone dialing prefix. Then they would start dialing numbers in sequence, trolling for victims.

When an unsuspecting person answered the phone, they would hear a female screaming, “Help me!” The screamer’s voice was likely a recording. Instinctively, the victim might blurt out his or her child’s name: “Mary, are you okay?” And then a man’s voice would say something like, “We have Mary. She’s in a truck. We are holding her hostage. You need to pay a ransom and you need to do it now or we are going to cut off her fingers.”

Most of the time the intended victims quickly learned that ‘Mary’ was at home or at school, or they sensed the scam and hung up. This fraud only worked when people picked up the phone, they had a daughter, and she was not home, But if you are making hundreds of calls, the crime will eventually work.

The scammers attempt to keep victims on the phone so they can’t verify their loved ones’ whereabouts or contact law enforcement. The callers are always in a hurry, and the ransom demand is usually a wire payment to Mexico of $2,000 or less, because there are legal restrictions for wiring larger amounts across the border.”

A couple months ago, a federal grand jury charged a 34-year-old woman in Houston woman with wire fraud, money laundering, and 8 other charges for her involvement in ‘fake kidnapping’. This was the first official indictment for this type of scam.

The FBI recommends the following tips to anyone who might receive a fake (or real) kidnapping call:

  • In most cases, the best course of action is to hang up the phone.
  • If you do engage the caller, don’t call out your loved one’s name.
  • Try to slow the situation down. Request to speak to your family member directly. Ask, “How do I know my loved one is okay?”
  • Ask questions only the alleged kidnap victim would know, such as the name of a pet. Avoid sharing information about yourself or your family.
  • Listen carefully to the voice of the alleged victim if they speak.
  • Attempt to contact the alleged victim via phone, text, or social media, and request that they call back from their cell phone.
  • To buy time, repeat the caller’s request and tell them you are writing down the demand, or tell the caller you need time to get things moving.
  • Don’t agree to pay a ransom, by wire or in person. Delivering money in person can be dangerous.
If you are contacted by a fake kidnapper, you can call Charlotte’s FBI division at (704) 672-6100, or submit your tip online at tips.fbi.gov.

Whom Should The Charlotte Hornets Target In The NBA Draft?

0

At the time of this writing, the Charlotte Hornets remain in the playoff hunt in the NBA’s Eastern Conference. It’s down to the point at which every game counts, and thanks in large part to a miraculous shot by Jeremy Lamb in a recent game, the Hornets retain slim hopes of a postseason berth.

Whether or not the team makes the playoffs though, we know generally where it might pick come June’s NBA Draft. The Hornets will either be in the late lottery or they’ll be one of the first teams to pick outside of it, putting them right in, say, the pick 12-16 range. That’s not typically where teams pick up elite prospects, but it certainly happens. Julius Erving was a 12th pick; Kobe Bryant and Karl Malone both went 13th; Tim Hardaway, Steve Nash, Kawhi Leonard, and John Stockton are just some of the stars who have gone in the 14-16 range. So, while these gems are few and far between, there’s always potential value in a mid-first round pick.

The Hornets will need to find some of that value if they’re ever to elevate themselves from the middle-lower tier of the NBA, where they’ve toiled far too long. Here, by our estimation, are some of the players Michael Jordan and the front office should be looking at.

Bruno Fernando – C, Maryland

If you catch him at the right moment, Bruno Fernando looks like an absolute monster. He’s a physical specimen with fairly good natural touch around the basket and good defensive instincts. Fernando isn’t always as assertive as scouts would likely prefer to see, but when he’s on he can largely control a game. In Charlotte he’d potentially be the best big man of the Michael Jordan era, and would be a fascinating running mate for Kemba Walker, if Walker re-signs. It’s ultimately likely that Fernando will be selected a few picks before Charlotte has the chance to pick him, but he should still be on the team’s radar just in case.

Jarrett Culver – SG, Texas Tech

Jarrett Culver is one of the rising names of March Madness, and is far and away the standout star on a Texas Tech team that, on any given night, has been as good as anyone else in the country. Indeed, while the latest sports forecasts from oddsmakers have Duke and Virginia favored to meet in the national championship game, Culver’s Red Raiders have proven to be on the same level – nearly beating Duke earlier this season and topping Virginia in defensive efficiency (which is usually Virginia’s bread and butter). Culver is a big reason why, as he fits into the team’s vaunted defense and also provides its top offensive threat. He’s not an elite shooter just yet but he’s a good one, and his jack-of-all-trades style and NBA-ready athleticism will make him appealing to a lot of teams. In Charlotte, he could just be the player Michael Kidd-Gilchrist never quite turned into.

Bol Bol – F, Oregon

Unfortunately, Bol Bol’s lone year in college was cut short due to injury, and he was unable to showcase himself the way he might otherwise have. This may wind up being great for Charlotte, however, as it means Bol could be available in the middle of the first round. At 7’2’’ with fairly good movement and some signs of shooting ability, Bol Bol is nothing short of an alarming prospect. Players of this general type – not that there have been very many – can be somewhat hit-or-miss, but from the brief glimpse we got of Bol at Oregon, he has a more advanced skillset than, say, a Thon Maker. He’d be a worth pick simply on the chance that his upside pays off and the Hornets find themselves a star.

Darius Garland – PG, Vanderbilt

There’s still a definite chance that Kemba Walker will leave the Hornets this summer, despite Jordan’s stated desire to keep him around at all costs. Some indications have even been that he may be more likely to leave than to stay. This would be something of a disaster for Charlotte, but all the team would be able to do is start a rebuild, and there’s some logic to doing so with a high-value point guard prospect. Darius Garland is just that. He was viewed by many as the top point guard in the current freshman class, but missed almost the entire season with an injury. That makes him a bit of a question mark, but if he can get back to normal it may also mean the Hornets could land a top-five level prospect in the middle of the first round.

The NBA Draft never quite turns out the way it looks like it might a few months in advance. For now though, these seem to represent some of the most sensible and exciting possibilities for the Hornets.

Charlotte Opening The World’s First Toilet-Themed Restaurant in Dilworth

0

With Charlotte now ranked as one of the top 10 food cities in America, our culinary spectrum is starting to expand into some truly adventurous realms.

One restaurateur is now hoping to capitalize on our growing foodie culture and Instagram-crazed generation by opening the world’s first “toilet-themed” restaurant right here in the Queen City.

The new 11,000 sqft ‘Modern Toilet’ is opening in the old 131 Main location, next to The People’s Market and across the street from Starbucks. They held a soft opening this past weekend for a select number of popular Instagrammers, serving them;

Curry Chicken in a tiny little toilet;

a tasty version of meatballs 4-ways;

spiraled chocolate ice cream for dessert;

and to wash it all down – a portable urinal filled with mango juice;

The restaurant even fashioned their bathroom sinks out of old toilets;

Grand Opening is set for April 1st, 2019.

Please note that this article was written for April Fools Day, the Modern Toilet is actually a surprisingly popular restaurant in Taiwan – sadly there are no current plans to open a location in Charlotte.

What currently resides at the corner of Scott and East Blvd is The People’s Market – one of Charlotte’s favorite hangout spots featuring incredible sandwhiches, wraps, and soups, as well beers, snacks, and other goodies. Read more on the in-depth article we wrote about them last year here.

South Carolina Bill Seeks to Raise Limits on Malpractice Awards

0

Right now, the South Carolina legislature has taken up debate on a bill that would increase the liability of government-operated hospitals and medical facilities in the event of malpractice or other injurious conduct. The bill, known as S0007 in the South Carolina Senate, would also amend the South Carolina Torts Claims Act (SCTA) to raise the caps on jury awards resulting from malpractice cases against charitable hospitals and care organizations.

The text of the bill calls for an over 300% increase in the total amount of damages that may be awarded to claimants in cases against government entities when the damage to the party was caused by a non-physician or nun-dentist employed by the government. In practice, that would increase liability for mistakes or accidents involving care provided by nurses and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), which would mark a major change in the way medical malpractice cases are handled statewide.

The reason the changes could be significant has to do with the fact that the current limits under the SCTA were set at a time when many people believed that jury awards had grown excessive and had become a threat to the continued existence of the government-operated hospital system. The specificity of the limits set forth in the SCTA also has a huge effect on the rights of claimants. According to the attorneys at Steinberg Goodman & Kalish, malpractice actions “can be brought against any person or entity that provides care, including doctors, nurses, surgeons, technicians, dentists, physical therapists, optometrists and hospitals”, but the SCTA made filing an action for all but a physician-related injury cost prohibitive.

To remedy that, the new bill would alter the current liability limits in the following ways:

  • Raise the cap on loss claims due to a single occurrence from $300,000 to $1,000,000
  • Raise the total recoverable sum due to a single occurrence from $600,000 to $2,000,000

In addition, the new limits would also be automatically adjusted each year according to the Department of Labor’s Consumer Price Index for all Urban Consumers (CPI-U), South Region, which would keep them in line with inflation and rising consumer prices in South Carolina. To avoid having to retool the rest of the SCTA, the same annual adjustments would also apply to any other limits set forth in the existing law.

For South Carolina residents, the changes would mean having an avenue to pursue meaningful damages for medical malpractice in the state, but critics also note that the increased liability could raise healthcare costs and insurance rates statewide. That’s because medical organizations had long made it a standing practice to keep a detailed account of all actions taken by non-physicians and non-dentists in their employ so as to shift blame for errors onto employees covered under the restrictive caps. Now that they would no longer be able to avoid liability in that way, carrying costlier malpractice insurance and maintaining larger financial reserves will become the norm.

The bill’s sponsors, who include Senators Goldfinch, Talley, Harpootlian, Malloy, Climer, and Kimpson plan to follow up on it with a second measure that would account for some situation-specific exceptions to the new financial limits. That could mean additional loopholes for litigants that would circumvent the caps altogether, as well as the addition of some more protections for hospitals worried by the increases. So far, it’s unclear what changes could be forthcoming to the existing bill as it sees further debate, but as it is still under consideration, citizens or groups that have concerns may still contact their state senator to register their opinion on the measure.
