Simon today announced Charlotte Premium Outlets will welcome Columbia Factory Store and Sperry in late fall, 2019. Columbia Factory Store is set to open in a nearly 8,000 square-foot location near Old Navy Outlet later this fall. Outdoor enthusiasts can find technologies and performance products that keep people warm, dry, cool and protected year-round, including innovative apparel, footwear, accessories and equipment.

Beginning this fall, shoppers can find a wide selection of footwear for women, men, kids and babies at Sperry. Iconic Sperry boat shoes, sandals, loafers, flats, slippers, espadrilles, boots, sneakers and oxfords will be offered next to Tommy Hilfiger in a 2,261 square-foot storefront.

Charlotte’s Animal Shelter Is Over-Capacity – Asking For Help In Finding New Homes

Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s Animal Care and Control shelter is now in desperate need of more space in their kennels and is calling on all Charlotte residents to consider adopting a new furry friend.

The shelter held a press briefing yesterday to urge the public to help spread the word about their overcapacity issues;

According to spokesperson Melissa Knicely, the shelter found homes for 73 pets during their ‘Clean The Shelters’ event on Saturday (more than triple what they usually see on a daily basis).

“We were all very excited … until we regrouped the next morning and realized that all of those spots just filled, immediately, with the dogs that were waiting in the stray kennels,” Knicely noted.

It’s pretty typical for shelter populations to swell in the summer months, as more litters are born and people and their pets spend more time outside (giving pets more chances to run away). With this year’s exceptionally warm weather, these issues have only been heightened.

If you’re considering adopting a pet, you can stop by the shelter for a no-obligation meet and greet with all of their furry residents. Their address is 8315 Byrum Drive and they are open from 11 am to 7 pm on weekdays and 11 am to 5 pm on weekends.

All adoption fees have now been waived for a short time. A $10 license fee is required to own a pet in Mecklenburg County.

Last Night’s Thunderstorm Wreaked Havoc On The Charlotte Region

A major thunderstorm wreaked havoc on our region last night, causing hail damage, fires, power outages, and a destroyed home in Mount Holly.

A 65 mph micro-burst was even detected at the Charlotte Douglas Airport, causing a complete ground stop for all flights;

The airport tweeted a video of the wind, along with a message that “Ramp is closed due to lightning in the area. Please check flight status with your airline for updates.”

Last night over 7,000 Duke Energy customers were without power after trees took down power lines across our region.

As of 10:30am this morning, there are still 143 active outages across our region, stopping power to 1,739 total customers:

American Idol Auditions Being Held In The Carolinas Over The Next 2 Weeks

American Idol is coming to the Carolinas over the next 2 weeks in search of America’s next top singing sensation.

They will be in Columbia, SC on August 26th (Pastides Alumni Center, 900 Senate St.) and Raleigh (location TBD) on September 1st.

If you received a wristband and a scheduled slot, be prepared to sing a song of your choice either a cappella (without music) or with your own instrumental accompaniment (e.g., a guitar). You should be prepared to sing at least two or possibly three songs. If you are called back to audition further, you may be asked again to sing two songs a cappella, one of which may or may not be from a list that will be provided to you by the Producer at that time.

North Carolina is Now Home To One Of The Biggest Music Festivals In The World

A new report by FarandWide.com has just named North Carolina’s Folk Festival as the 17th largest music festival in the world, based on its 2018 attendance numbers of 150,000.

The report researched the attendance numbers for every major festival around the world and ranked the top 20.

The NC Folk Fest came in just behind South Florida’s Ultra Music Festival with 165,000 in attendance, and 4 spots behind Coachella with 250,000 in attendance. Austria’s Donauinselfest was named the #1 largest music festival in the world with roughly 3 million in attendance last year.

The report notes that “the NC Folk Festival is essentially an annual three-day party, courtesy of the city of Greensboro”.

This year’s lineup includes; Andre Veloz, Ledward Kapaana, Lúnasa, Mwenso and the Shakes, Racines, Redd Volkaert, Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca, The Allen Boys, Tuba Skinny, and many more.

The 2019 North Carolina Folk Festival will take place from September 6th-8th in downtown Greensboro, centered around the Greensboro Cultural Center at 200 N. Davie Street.

Admission to the festival is free, but there will be plenty of food, beverage, marketplace handcrafts, and merchandise items available for purchase.

Today, McDonalds announced it’s launching their new ‘McCafé It Forward’ program – a three-day, pay-it-forward program that is designed to spread goodness across the country one golden cup of coffee at a time.

Beginning tomorrow, 500 McCafé It Forward cards will be distributed and activated throughout the U.S. Each card swipe can be exchanged for one free small cup of McCafé Premium Roast Coffee or Iced Coffee at participating McDonald’s nationwide until August 23.

The first card recipients – selected because they’re coffee lovers or individuals known for demonstrating kindness in their communities – will redeem their cup of coffee, and then kick off the ripple effect of goodness by passing the card along.

Charlotte Pride Breaks Attendance Records With An Estimated 200,000 Visitors

This past weekend, the Queen City witnessed its largest Charlotte Pride festival and parade in our city’s history.

According to organizers, an estimated 200,000 visitors came to the festival over the 3 days it was held in Uptown Charlotte;

This year’s numbers were significantly higher than previous years, including an estimated 130,000 in 2016, 150,000 in 2017, and 165,000 in 2018.

Organizers think the significantly increase in numbers this year was due to the fact that 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of Manhattan’s Stonewall riots back in the 60s.

Carolina Panthers Officially Open “The Bubble”

The Carolina Panthers have just officially opened “The Bubble” – a new ‘indoor’ practice facility that will allow the team to practice even when its raining or snowing out.

The team just posted pictures of the new facility on their social channels with the caption “New digs 👀”;

Last year, Panthers owner David Tepper sent a letter to all season ticket holders, talking about the new ‘bubble’ facility as well as additional changes to the Panthers Stadium.

“At this point, given our practice field and what other people have in the league, we’re falling behind a little bit,” noted Tepper. “The Bubble is our first of several planned infrastructure projects and will be followed by enhancements to Bank of America Stadium and a new permanent practice facility and campus in the future.”

The Panthers have had to practice in all kinds of negative conditions, from soggy fields, to snow, to freezing rain. The rainfall before Christmas was so bad that the team was forced to practice in an open event space inside the Charlotte Convention Center.

The Bubble will be a short term solution to the Panthers indoor practice facility needs as the team awaits their massive new headquarters and practice facilities in Rock Hill.
