Oprah Winfrey Is Coming To Charlotte

Today global media leader Oprah Winfrey announced her first national arena tour in five years, Oprah’s 2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus. Oprah will bring a full day wellness event to nine U.S. cities beginning January 2020. Joined by high profile guests, Oprah will help motivate audiences across the country.

“What I know for sure is we can all come together to support a stronger, healthier, more abundant life – focused on what makes us feel energized, connected and empowered,” said Oprah Winfrey.  “As I travel the country, my hope for this experience is to motivate others to let 2020 be the year of transformation and triumph – beginning first and foremost with what makes us well.  This is the year to move forward, let’s make it happen in 2020!”

On each stop, attendees will spend the day with Oprah as she shares the personal ups and downs of her wellness journey and guides them to develop their own 2020 action plan through motivating conversations, the latest in wellness research and insightful interactive workbook exercises.  Every city will feature a different lineup of high-profile guests, electrifying experiences and invigorating talks as well as highlight inspiring individuals who took charge of their lives and created lasting change.  Each tour stop will also feature a signature Oprah interview as she sits down for an intimate one-on-one conversation with some of the biggest celebrities, headline-makers and game-changers.

The tour will be produced by Live Nation in conjunction with Women Nation, the newly formed division dedicated to women-led and women driven live events.  The day-long event will kick off Saturday, January 4 in Ft. North Carolina Officials Issue Guidance for 911 Calls During Hurricane Dorian

As Hurricane Dorian approaches, the North Carolina 911 Board and county 911 centers are preparing to ensure continuous and effective emergency services throughout the storm.

North Carolina 911 centers in the southeastern and coastal regions have made preparations to route calls to back-up 911 centers in unaffected areas of the state if necessary due to weather or call volume. Rerouting calls is common practice during weather-related emergencies and ensures that North Carolina residents will not experience a disruption of service due to the hurricane. The professionals at the back-up 911 centers will be able to assist callers quickly and effectively.

State officials issued the following guidelines to help keep residents and first responders safe:

  • Do not call 9-1-1 unless there is a life-threatening emergency.
  • Call 2-1-1 for non-emergency disaster-related needs.  211 is available 24 hours a day to provide information on evacuations, shelter locations, and other disaster-related public assistance. 2-1-1 call specialists are available to help those evacuating access the information they need. You can also reach 2-1-1 by texting NCDORIAN to 898-211 or by calling 888-892-1162 if you use a Relay device.
  • Provide as much information as possible when calling 9-1-1. The professionals answering the calls may be at back-up centers in a different area of the state, and it is important not to assume that they are familiar with your local geography or landmarks.
  • Do not reach out through social media for assistance if you have an emergency. Call 9-1-1. First-responders will not monitor social media sites or networks during the hurricane.
  • Be patient. First responders are working as quickly as they can. Many are volunteers who are stepping into harm’s way to help as many people as possible.

The N.C. General Assembly created the 911 Board in 2007 to manage both landline and wireless 911 services in North Carolina. A single, statewide service charge per connection for any type of voice communication service provider goes to the 911 Fund to support equipment purchases for all 911 centers in the state. The N.C. 911 Board is part of the N.C. Department of Information Technology and Secretary Eric Boyette serves as its chair.

Watch Hurricane Dorian Hit NC On Live Frying Pan Camera

With Hurricane Dorian now predicted to make initial US landfall in North Carolina’s outer banks on Friday morning, our Governor has declared a state of emergency and has evacuated all barrier islands.

You can now watch the winds increase as the storm blows up the East Coast via North Carolina’s live Frying Pan Cam;

According to Explore.org, the Frying Pan Cam is a streaming live camera that’s been permanently attached to the Frying Pan Tower, 34 miles off the coast of Cape Fear, NC.

The Frying Pan Tower was originally built in the 1960s to warn ships of the shallow waters nearby, but since the spread of GPS navigation, the tower now serves as a platform for the live camera and an important ecosystem for local marine wildlife.

UPDATE 9/5/2019 8:00am:

At 800 AM EDT (1200 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Dorian was located directly off the coast of Charleston, moving toward the north-northeast near 8 mph (13 km/h). A turn toward the northeast and a faster forward speed is forecast tonight and tomorrow n Friday. The center of Dorian will continue to move close to the coast of South Carolina today, and then move over the coast of North Carolina tonight and Friday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 115 mph (185 km/h) with higher gusts. Dorian is a category 3 hurricane. Some fluctuations in intensity are expected this morning, followed by slow weakening. Dorian is expected to remain a hurricane through the weekend.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 km) from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 195 miles (315 km).

President Trump Signs Emergency Declaration Ahead of Hurricane Dorian’s Anticipated NC Landfall

President Trump has just signed a declaration to provide substantial federal aid to North Carolina ahead of Hurricane Dorian’s anticipated landfall in our state.

Last night, he tweeted, “At the request of Senator Thom Tillis, I am getting the North Carolina Emergency Declaration completed and signed tonight. Hope you won’t need it!”

According to a press release by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, “The President’s action authorizes FEMA to coordinate all disaster relief efforts which have the purpose of alleviating the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population, and to provide appropriate assistance for required emergency measures, authorized under Title V of the Stafford Act, to save lives and to protect property and public health and safety, and to lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe.”

Specifically, FEMA is now authorized to provide equipment and resources for emergency protective measures (Category B) at 75% federal funding for all 100 counties in North Carolina and for all of the the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

Charlotte’s 8th officials ‘Open Streets 704’ is gearing up to shut down the streets to motorized vehicles and open them to all varieties of bikes, scooters, walkers, and unicyclists. The streets will also open up to dozens of artisans, street vendors, musicians and classes for residents to freely explore.

Open Streets 704 returns to one of its most popular West Charlotte-Dilworth routes on Sunday, September 15th from 1 – 5 p.m.

This past Spring, Open Streets 704 saw over 30,000 neighbors wind their way through NoDa, Villa Heights, Optimist Park, Belmont, Plaza Midwood, and Commonwealth.

This Fall’s event will include the zones;

 Arts and Science: (Highlighted in RED)  Opportunities abound to explore your creative side. Musical performances, artist demonstrations, interactive maker spaces, and dance ensembles of all ages will engage with Open Street 704.

Southminster Family Zone: (Highlighted in YELLOW) Fun for the whole family! From bean bag toss to a pop up dog park – be prepared to get active. Activities will include: street soccer, bicycling demonstrations, pet crafts,  life-size jenga, and more!

 Green Zone: (Highlighted in GREEN) Be prepared to learn about the nature all around you, plants and trees in your community, or lend a helping hand in the garden, and find out about local wildlife!

 Wellness Zone: (Highlighted in BLUE) Explore a fitter, healthier version of you! Cooking demonstrations, yoga classes, Zumba, and healthy heart initiatives will fill this zone with fun!

With gas prices rising over the past six months, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2019’s Best & Worst Cities to Drive in.

To determine the most driver-friendly places in the U.S., WalletHub compared the 100 largest cities across 30 key metrics. The data set ranges from average gas prices to annual hours in traffic congestion per auto commuter to auto-repair shops per capita.

North Carolina fared remarkably well, with Raleigh ranking #1, Winston Salem ranking #5, and Charlotte ranking #9 in the nation;

The Search is On For North Carolina’s Top Youth Volunteers

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards will grant two North Carolina honorees $1,000 scholarship, a medallion and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.

Today through November 5, 2019, The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is looking for North Carolina’s top youth volunteers of the year.

Students in grades 5-12 are invited to apply for 2020 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards if they have made meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service within the past 12 months. The application is available at http://spirit.prudential.com and www.nassp.org/spirit.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), was created in 1995 to recognize the exemplary volunteer work of middle level and high school students. Since then, Prudential Spirit of Community Awards have been given to more than 130,000 middle and high school students across the country at the local, state and national level.

“We’ve honored young people from three generations since this program began, and while the world has changed many times over, one thing has stayed the same: Young volunteers are doing remarkable, meaningful work to address the challenges facing their communities,” said Charles Lowrey, chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial, Inc. “As we enter our 25th year, we remain inspired by these young people and their stories of service, and hope that they’ll inspire others to get involved, too.”

North Carolina’s top youth volunteers of 2019 were Simona Adhikari, 17, of Charlotte, who taught 24 girls in rural Nepal to make bracelets, and then sold them in the United States and United Kingdom to raise more than $6,000 for the girls and their small village, and Alexander Fultz, 14, of Pineville, who created a nonprofit organization that has donated thousands of toys and clothing items to hospitals in several states to brighten the days of hospitalized patients. How to Apply

To apply for a 2020 Prudential Spirit of Community Award, students and certifiers must complete the following steps:

  • Students complete the online application by November 5, 2019.
  • Then, students submit the application for certification to their principal or head of a local participating organization.
  • Certifiers review all applications for their school or organization, then select a Local Honoree to nominate for state-level judging by November 15, 2019.

Applications can be certified by a middle or high school principal or head of a Girl Scout council, county 4-H organization, American Red Cross chapter, YMCA or a Points of Light Global Network member. (Students can request a paper application by calling 888-651-2951.)
