Local Hunters Organizing North Carolina’s 7th Annual Coyote Hunting Tournament

0

carolina-coyote-classic-tournament-winnersA group of Charlotte-area hunters have created their own method to solve our region’s growing coyote problem – a statewide coyote hunting tournament.

Over the past several years, coyote sightings have been increasing around South Charlotte neighborhoods, with reports of pets being snatched, and many parents fearing for their children’s safety.

The town of Tega Cay near Rock Hill has even hired a professional company to come in and set traps to try to deal with their coyote problem, although so far, they’ve only been able to catch 4 coyotes.

43-officially-weighed-coyotesLocal sportsman and owner of 704Outdoors.tv thinks he has the best solution to the problem – a statewide coyote tournament. Next month he will be organizing the 7th annual Carolina Coyote Classic tournament.

The tournament will take place from February 21st-23rd and will be held at the American Legion Post 76 (Formally Stanly County Fairgrounds) located at 24302 S Business 52 in Albemarle, NC. It is open to all 100 counties around North Carolina.

This year the tournament will feature 3 and 4 man teams separated into different classes. Prices for the winning teams include; a Predator Hunting Rifle Package, Sniper Hog Lights  Rifle Light Package, Taxidermy, Predator Calls, 704 Outdoors Gear, and more.

US Department of Labor Finds Contractor Violated Wage Laws During Hurricane Recovery in NC

0

After an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division (WHD), an Athens, Georgia-based disaster relief company will pay $184,838 in wages to 18 employees after an investigation found the company violated federal wage and overtime laws while under contract to provide recovery services in several North Carolina locations in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence.

WHD investigators determined MLU Services Inc. violated the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) when it paid some overtime-eligible employees flat salaries without regard to the number of hours that they worked. This practice violated FLSA overtime requirements when those employees worked more than 40 hours in a workweek but were not paid overtime.

WHD also found MLU Services paid quality control inspectors at rates below those required by the McNamara-O’Hara Service Contract Act (SCA) when they performed work on the employer’s contract with the Federal Emergency Management Administration. MLU Services paid the inspectors rates applicable to data entry personnel – rates lower than those required for the work they performed. The employer also failed to pay these employees fringe benefits required under the SCA.

“Employers must meet their obligation to pay their employees the wages they have legally earned,” said Wage and Hour Division District Director Richard Blaylock in Raleigh, North Carolina. “Contractors and subcontractors awarded federal contracts must understand that incorrectly classifying employees can lead to costly violations. The U.S. Department of Labor offers employers a wide variety of tools to help them understand their responsibilities.”

The SCA requires contractors and subcontractors performing services on prime contracts in excess of $2,500 to pay service employees in various classes no less than the wage rates and fringe benefits found prevailing in the locality, or the rates, including prospective increases, contained in a predecessor contractor’s collective bargaining agreement.

The department offers numerous resources to ensure employers have the tools they need to understand their responsibilities and to comply with federal law, such as online videos, confidential calls or in-person visits to local WHD offices.

For more information about the FLSA, SCA and other laws enforced by the Wage and Hour Division, contact the toll-free helpline at 866-4US-WAGE (487-9243). Information is also available at https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd.

WHD’s mission is to promote and achieve compliance with labor standards to protect and enhance the welfare of the nation’s workforce. WHD enforces federal minimum wage, overtime pay, recordkeeping and child labor requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act. WHD also enforces the Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act, the Employee Polygraph Protection Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, wage garnishment provisions of the Consumer Credit Protection Act and a number of employment standards and worker protections as provided in several immigration related statutes. Additionally, WHD administers and enforces the prevailing wage requirements of the Davis Bacon Act and the Service Contract Act and other statutes applicable to Federal contracts for construction and for the provision of goods and services.

The mission of the Department of Labor is to foster, promote and develop the welfare of the wage earners, job seekers and retirees of the United States; improve working conditions; advance opportunities for profitable employment; and assure work-related benefits and rights.

The Mosaic of Diversity: Minority Business Growth

0

“People may be said to resemble not the bricks of which a house is built, but the pieces of a picture, each differing in shape, but matching the rest, and thus bringing out the picture.”

  • Felix Adler (1851-1933), professor of political and social ethics and founder of the American Ethical Movement

In recent years I’ve given a lot of thought to what I view as a disenfranchised business community. As seen in Charlotte’s business arena, diversity appeared to be an issue that simply wasn’t addressed in what Ron Leeper describes as a “good-old-boy system.” Repeatedly I have found myself meditating on what the word “diversity” actually means. The Oxford Dictionary defines diversity simply as “variety.” To African-American organizations and associations, diversity is seen as an effort to make sure there is a greater representation of black entrepreneurs in the business culture. In this sense, diversity is more about equal economic opportunities. Overall, recognizing diversity can be the first step in a process that must lead to inclusion.

In a pursuit to understand what “diversity” means, Felix Adler’s description of “pieces of a picture puzzle” can provide a convenient framework around which to assemble the various views of diversity. As city leaders voice their concerns about disparities, this goes back to a question posed by former business columnist Ron Stodghill, “what is the real goal: Is it protect the Charlotte brand from negative publicity or to build a stronger, more diverse business community?” If the latter is the case, what does this mean for minority business growth?

“The Vision for Minority Business Growth,” also known as the 7-0-4 Plan is a revolutionary campaign to promote diversity and inclusiveness in the Charlotte, North Carolina business community. The movement is positioning itself as an initiative for growing minority businesses in the local community. The program’s purpose also looks to expand to enrich the lives and future of our youth by leveraging unconventional ideas. The 7-0-4 Plan, a community-based project, is founded upon five guiding economic ideas to foster entrepreneurship. The mission is to establish its presence as a trendsetting social media campaign designed to build support for a diverse business community via an infrastructure around minority entrepreneurs.

Execution of the 7-0-4 Plan would promote diversity and inclusiveness in the Charlotte business community and put the city on the fast track to explosive job growth and increased tax revenue base. The aim is to develop citywide resources and bring renewed economic growth and vitality through urban entrepreneurship. Through this campaign, we now have an unparalleled chance to spark minority business growth and to build a stronger, more diverse business community.

Which Sectors Could See Growth in Charlotte in the 2020s?

0

Over the last few years, the largest city in the state in North Carolina, has continued to grow across a wide array of different industries, including, for example, real estate. However, while there have already been indications that the city is continuing to develop, there are several broader markets that could see significant levels of growth throughout the coming years.

As a result, we’re going to look at a couple of sectors that could develop in Charlotte in the 2020s.

Online Gambling Market

Throughout the United States, the laws on online gambling vary depending on state legislation. In North Carolina, the rules regarding this sector are currently somewhat conservative as the region itself has continued to fight against the widespread legalization of any kind of permitted gambling throughout its history.

Although some believe that the US is opening up to the potential benefits that come with legalizing this sector, online gambling doesn’t seem to be coming soon to Charlotte, as the state of North Carolina is strictly governed in this industry. However, there have been numerous pieces of legislation which have attempted to enhance the acceptance and clarity surrounding gambling markets throughout the US.

Regulation Changes in the US

The Wire Act, which was first introduced back in 1961, has recently been revised following the growth of digitalization and the continued evolution of the online gambling industry. Because the act can now be applied to all forms of gambling, there is far less confusion regarding the sector’s widespread legality. Moreover, and perhaps more crucially, is the reversal of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992. The Supreme Court reversed the act’s restrictive nature and allowed New Jersey to pass its own gambling laws in 2018, allowing local people to legally place bets from their own homes.

While there is little to suggest that North Carolina and, in particular, Charlotte will soften its stance in relation to its gambling laws, the development of the sector in other states suggests that, in time, it’s not impossible for the most populous city in North Carolina to see growth of its own in this field throughout the 2020s.

Soccer

One sector that certainly looks well set to enjoy sustained growth throughout the next decade is the soccer industry. On the 17th of December, it was officially announced that Charlotte would finally be getting its own Major League Soccer team. One of the main reasons for the state being chosen as the franchise’s 30th club is, by the admission of the MLS commission Don Garber, as a result of the enormous energy and growth that Charlotte has experienced.

After the MLS decided to further the expansion of the franchise from 26 teams in 2020 to 30 in 2021, Charlotte instantly became one of the frontrunners for a place in the league. In recent times, the popularity of top-flight soccer in the US has been on the rise and, following the new-found respect that spectators have for the franchise and its future plans, the league has averaged attendances of more than 22,000 fans during the 2018-19 season, which is a new record.

The inclusion of Charlotte in the MLS is testament to the city’s continued development throughout the last few years. While it’s clear that the soccer industry is growing in popularity across the entirety of the US, the inclusion of Charlotte within the franchise could also see the sector grow significantly from a local standpoint during the 2020s.

A Future of Unknown Potential

Ultimately, the upcoming decade could be one of immense growth for Charlotte. As soccer in Charlotte looks set to reach new, unprecedented heights, the regulations surrounding online gambling remain less likely to change any time soon.

Although the reversal of existing legislation has altered the outlook of gambling within New Jersey, alterations to the laws within Charlotte appear unlikely – albeit, however, not impossible.

The North Carolina Zoo is excited to announce record attendance for the year 2019. The world’s largest natural habitat zoo saw 917,309 visitors or 85,000 more compared to 2018.

The previous years’ attendance was 831,748 for 2018 and 860,148 for 2017. Attendance was down in 2018 due to factors including record rainfall amounts in North Carolina, and multi-day closings caused by hurricanes Florence and Michael and Winter Storm Diego 2018.

“We are thrilled to welcome so many guests from North Carolina and around the world to our Zoo,” Zoo Director Pat Simmons said. “We have plans to keep improving our programs and guest experience so that even more people can enjoy the Zoo in the future.”

“The North Carolina Zoo continues to increase visitation year after year by providing outstanding events, programs and experiences,” said Susi H. Hamilton, secretary of the N.C.
