Exceptionally Rare Adult ‘Piebald Deer’ Spotted In North Carolina Woods

A North Carolina wildlife photographer has just captured an extremely rare image of a ‘Piebald Deer‘ in the woods of North Carolina. Cary resident Gary Frazier took the image and uploaded it to Facebook, where it has already attracted over 100 comments and 62 shares.

According to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, Piebald Deer have an extremely rare genetic trait that creates blotches of white coloration on portions of their hide that are usually dark in color. The Piebald trait may show up in one in 1,000 deer.

It’s exceptionally rare to spot a full-grown piebald deer in the wild since the recessive trait also causes them to have skeletal or internal deformities, including a bowed snout or curved spine, often resulting in the deer dying much earlier than most deer.

Historic Partnership Formed To Vaccinate 1 Million People Around The Charlotte Region

With COVID cases continuing to spike around our region, a historic partnership has now been formed with a truly historic goal – to vaccinate 1 million people around the Charlotte region by July 4th.

According to a press release, Honeywell, Atrium Health, Tepper Sports & Entertainment, the Charlotte Motor Speedway, the City of Charlotte, and Mecklenburg County are joining forces to “unleash their combined strength to vaccinate as many frontline workers, members of the general public and of underserved communities as quickly and efficiently as possible”.

“We look forward to working with our partners to make this event happen,” said Mecklenburg Public Health Director Gibbie Harris. “The only way to get the virus behind us is for people to be vaccinated. I also hope that by July, by working together, we can exceed the goal of 1 million people in this region starting to be protected.”

The upcoming events will also be supported by the Governor’s office and The NC Department of Health and Human Services.

“Getting vaccines in people’s arms as quickly and equitably as possible is a top priority for North Carolina,” said Gov. Cooper. “Partnerships with businesses, health providers and government like this can help get it done.”

On Tuesday, Governor Cooper briefly mentioned the possibility of “large scale vaccination events” in the near future:

Discovery Place Museums in Mecklenburg County Closing for 3 Weeks

In support of the recent reports and recommendations from the Mecklenburg County Health Department, several Discovery Place museums will be closing for the next three weeks.

Discovery Place Science, Discovery Place Nature and Discovery Place Kids-Huntersville, all located in Mecklenburg County, will be closed from January 14 through February 2.

“We believe we created the safest possible environment for families to visit our Museums during the past few months,” said President and CEO Catherine Wilson Horne. “However, Discovery Place is committed to the larger effort to stop the spread of COVID-19, and while the directive issued yesterday does not require us to close, we are doing so in hopes of being a part of the solution. Our top priority is, and always will be, the health and safety of our visitors, our staff and our community.”

Anyone with reservations to visit one of the affected Museums between now and February 2 will be fully refunded for their ticket purchases.

UNC Charlotte is responding to the greater Charlotte region’s employment needs with three new degree programs and five new graduate certificate programs that are relevant to the current and future job market. Several will be available this spring and all programs will be open for new and current students by fall 2021.

UNC Charlotte Data Science.JPGAs part of the new School of Data Science, UNC Charlotte will now offer a Bachelor of Science in Data Science. This is the first undergraduate degree of its kind in North Carolina and results from direct collaboration between the University and business leaders. In addition, the University now offers a Master of Science in Computer Engineering and a Bachelor of Arts in Writing, Rhetoric and Digital Studies.

New online graduate certificate programs include Advanced Literacy Instruction and Intervention, Applied Nursing Informatics, Respiratory Care Clinical Concepts, and Respiratory Care Leadership. A novel certificate in Workplace Competencies complements graduate degrees and enhances skills of working professionals in all areas.

“UNC Charlotte has a long history of being nimble in adapting to the evolving needs of our students and our community with relevant and future-oriented academic programs,” said Joan Lorden, provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs. “These new programs are designed to respond to industry needs, provide excellent opportunities for current and prospective students, and help strengthen our region’s workforce.”

Triple Pelvic Osteotomy (TPO)

When we adopt or purchase a new puppy, the last thing on our minds is that they may have a potentially debilitating skeletal disorder. Unfortunately, especially in medium to large breeds, there is a genetic disorder known as Hip Dysplasia. 

This condition, if very severe and can further cause joint disease associated with hip dysplasia in dogs. It may require surgical intervention if the condition is identified when your pup is very young. If it occurs later in life, the TPO will probably not be an option and other solutions would need to be explored.

Identifying the need for a TPO

You may notice your puppy has an odd way of walking, sort of rolling his hips or swinging his hind legs. This is very often an indication of early hip dysplasia. While he is still tiny, he will not have pain from this condition, as his bones are still soft and pliable. 

However, if left untreated, hip dysplasia in such a young dog will lead to a host of problems as he grows. One such treatment, which is indicated when the sufferer is a young pup, is the Triple Pelvic Osteotomy, or TPO. The TPO offers an early but permanent solution to prevent further complications.

What does a TPO entail?

This type of surgery is usually performed in puppies between eight and ten months of age, in medium to large breed dogs. The surgery involves the placement of special plates designed to correct the shape of the hip and pelvic bones; so that the angle of the hip socket lines up with the ball at the head of the femur. It is a major surgery and your dog will spend two or more nights in the hospital and need about eight weeks to recover fully.

Why a TPO?

If done at an early age, this surgery will eliminate the inevitable pain, inflammation and lameness that is typical in severe cases of Hip Dysplasia. By having this surgery done when your puppy is still growing, you are sparing him and yourself the suffering that comes later, particularly in larger breeds of dog. Should you opt not to have this surgery, your dog may face a full hip replacement later in life. The latter is far more expensive and it will take him longer to recover.

Possible Complications

As with all surgical procedures, there are risks. The moment we administer general anesthesia, there is a risk. However, there is also a small risk that the sciatic nerve may be damaged because of the proximity to the operation site. 

However, the incidence is minimal, so the best thing you can do is trust in your choice of veterinary surgeon. There is also a small risk of your puppy’s body rejecting the plates, but a dose of antibiotics will usually help it settle down.

Does my pet insurance cover a TPO?

If you took out your insurance when you got your new puppy, then it will be covered because it is considered an important surgery for the dog’s future. Unfortunately, no pet insurance will cover conditions that were known when the policy was initiated because it is considered a pre-existing condition.

What is his prognosis post-surgery?

The success rate of a Triple Pelvic Osteotomy is very high and most patients go on to grow into healthy, happy and pain-free dogs. Choosing this method of correcting his genetic defect is a decision you will never regret. Even if you do not have pet insurance, and you had to pay upfront, when you see your furry little family member frolicking around the park, you will know you have made the right decision. 

What does a TPO cost?

This question is a bit like asking, “how long is a piece of string?”; because the cost right now will certainly be subject to change in the future. However, for right now, depending on the veterinarian practice you use and where you live, you are looking at a cost of roughly $3000, as opposed to a total hip replacement (when he is older), which is in the range of $14 000. The TPO is a far less invasive surgery and recovery time is quicker. 

In conclusion, we do not know, when choosing our new family member, what illnesses or complications may lie ahead. Some tips, though, to avoid the heartbreak of finding you have to put him down due to massive defects, are to do some research into the breeder; check which breeds are more prone to have hip (or elbow) dysplasia; ask to see the puppy’s parents if you see obvious skin defects, or a limp, choose another breeder. 

We often adopt dogs from rescue shelters, in which case we have no idea of their parentage. In these cases, the best thing you can do is to take out pet insurance from day one. That way, you should be covered for any major issues that arise later.
