The American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) has named UNC Charlotte among its 2021 winners of its Excellence and Innovation Awards in recognition of the University’s response to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The University was selected for a special, one-time award that recognizes model work in achieving student success despite challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“UNC Charlotte’s selection as the 2021 AASCU Excellence and Innovation Award for Campus Pandemic Response in the Urban Category is a testament to the talent and dedication of our employees and the support and hard work of our students,” said Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber. “Through our collective efforts, we were able to deliver the highest quality education to our students — whether remotely or in person — while achieving record-breaking enrollment and fundraising goals. All of Niner Nation has ownership and pride in this award.”

The University’s entry, “Learning in the Time of COVID,” was selected by the AASCU awards committee for its outstanding results and potential to influence and serve as a model for other institutions.

AASCU President Mildred García, in announcing the award recipients, noted, “I am honored to recognize these Excellence and Innovation Award winners, who demonstrated immense creativity, resilience and dedication during an incredibly difficult year. These institutions are paving the way in prioritizing equity, student success and moving their diverse communities and regions forward as Stewards of Place.”

Highlights of UNC Charlotte’s innovative campus response to the global COVID-19 pandemic that were honored in the award include:

Wastewater_Levine 6 9.11.20.jpgWastewater testing and quarantine procedures: Faculty, graduate students and post-doctoral researchers from several academic disciplines came together to implement wastewater testing that serves as an early-warning system to locate the presence of COVID-19 and signal the emergence of potential clusters of people with coronavirus. The University’s efforts were among those mentioned in an article published by the New York Times in August 2020.

Remote learning and student life: The University’s Center for Teaching and Learning and Audiovisual Integration and Support for Learning Environments teams worked especially hard to give faculty the tools needed to ensure instructional continuity.

Mitigation to vaccination: For the 2020-21 academic year, the University started semesters online and delayed limited student move-in, which allowed time to implement, in collaboration with the Mecklenburg County Health Department, a plan of action that was coordinated predominantly by the University’s Office of Safety and Security. The daily Niner Health Check, a survey tool developed by UNC Charlotte’s Office of OneIT, enabled students, faculty and staff to report COVID-19 symptoms/exposure, resulting in a team of University contact tracers, specially trained graduate students in public health sciences, to determine who had been in close proximity of those infected. In the spring, the University partnered with Atrium Health to host vaccination clinics on campus for faculty, staff and students.

Constant communication: An online dashboard provides information to the wider community about the institution’s COVID-19 status. Updated daily, the dashboard gives real-time health trends. Niner Nation Cares, a comprehensive website with information about COVID-19 safety efforts and academic and administrative protocols was launched, and the Office of University Communications spearheaded the creation of “The New Norm,” an educational campaign with safety information to protect the campus community.

The University will be recognized formally at the AASCU 2021 Annual Meeting, held in-person in Clearwater Beach, Florida, and virtually from Nov. 7–9.

2.7 Magnitude Earthquake Just Struck 50 Miles North of Charlotte

0

This morning at 8:19am, a 2.7 magnitude earthquake struck just North of Charlotte near the city of Morganton at a depth of 5.6 km.

According to the USGA, the quake was felt as far away as East Charlotte and East Tennessee:

Earthquakes have been increasing in frequency around the Charlotte region over the past few years. Last year, we experienced the largest earthquake in over 100 years when a 5.1 magnitude quake hit Sparta, NC, and since then, dozens of aftershocks have continued to rattle our state.

According to USGS.gov, “Moderately damaging earthquakes strike the inland Carolinas every few decades, and smaller earthquakes are felt about once each year or two.”

Solar Energy: Everything You Need to Know

0

A brief history of solar power

The first photovoltaic cell was developed in 1954. Although solar energy had previously been produced and converted into renewable energy through various processes, it was after 1954 that solar power became a viable source of electricity to power devices over long periods. Today, many solar panels can convert sunlight to solar energy at above 20 percent efficiency, which is constantly on the rise. For reference, the first solar cells convert solar radiation to electricity at an efficiency of 4 percent.

A few state and federal incentives and policies, as mentioned in https://www.smartsolarenergyco.com/solar-panels-mcminnville-oregon/, contributed to reducing the cost of solar panels far enough for them to become more widely adopted. The solar power capacity in the country is enough to power 11 million households.

Facts about solar panels

Solar power is the utilization of the sun’s energy for electrical or thermal purposes. A solar panel system that converts the sun’s rays into usable electricity is one of the most common methods to capture solar energy. Solar energy is usually used in thermal applications to heat indoor spaces or fluids. Solar hot water systems and passive solar heating can take advantage of the sun’s energy with solar technology.

How do solar panels work?

A solar panel comprises a layer of cells, a metal frame, a glass unit, and wiring. Silicon has electrical properties that allow it to absorb and convert sunlight into electricity. A flow of electric current is initiated when light hits a cell, and the electrons are set in motion. The photovoltaic effect describes how solar panel tech works.

The photovoltaic effect is the science of generating electricity using solar panels. It was first discovered in 1839 and can be thought of as a property of specific materials that allows them to create an electric current when exposed to sunlight.

The process works through several steps:

  1. The photovoltaic solar cell absorbs the sun’s energy.
  2. The flow of electric current occurs when the sun’s rays interact with the Silicon cell.
  3. Direct current (DC) electricity is captured by wires and fed into a solar inverter to convert it to alternating current (AC) electricity.

The cost of solar energy

The cost of solar panels fell as a result of the increased inefficiency. The cost of installing a solar panel has fallen over the last decade, and renewable energy experts foresee that prices will continue to fall in the years to come.

Lowering the cost of solar energy may be possible thanks to solar power. The federal Investment Tax Credit has allowed households to deduce 26 percent of a solar system installation cost from their federal taxes, which is one of the main incentives available to anyone interested in solar energy. The incentive won’t last forever, as the ITC goes away for residential solar installations in 2024.

In addition, many states and utilities offer further incentives, such as net metering.

Solar energy is a renewable power source.

Anywhere that sunlight hits the surface of the Earth is a potential source for generating solar power, which is harnessable almost everywhere in the world. The sun provides a limitless source of energy. It is possible to generate electricity from infinite resources. If you want to produce electricity with renewable resources, compare it to using fossil fuels. It took thousands of years for oil, gas, and coal to form. Hence, every time one of those resources is burned to create electricity, that finite resource is moved marginally closer to depletion. The use of renewable resources from the sun to generate electricity does not deplete that resource. An infinite amount of sunlight can be turned into electricity in the future after shining on Earth’s surface. That is what makes it possible to use renewable energy and sustain it.

While the current electricity in the United States is mainly made up of fossil fuels such as oil and gas, renewable energy sources like solar are becoming a more significant portion of the country’s energy profile. The cost of renewable technologies remains competitive.

6 Services Your Bank Can Offer

0

Whether you want to get the most out of the bank that you are currently with or are considering switching to a new bank account, it’s important to understand the services that your bank offers and make sure that they are in line with what you need for managing your money. Banks can help you with everyday spending, getting access to exclusive customer deals, lending money, saving money, and more. Today, banks are offering more and more services to customers as the banking world becomes more competitive. Online-only banks are becoming more popular, but banks that still have physical branches to visit are often upping their range of services to be more competitive in a world of digital banking, giving you an increasing range of great options to choose from. Here are some of the top banking services to look out for.

Financial Advice:

Whether you want to save money, reduce your debt, buy a house, or invest your money, many banks offer financial advice services that you will be able to take advantage of. Financial advisors are always worth speaking to if you have a certain goal in mind for your money or simply want to make your money work harder for you since they are trained professionals who can take any money issues that you might be having and help you make sense of them. Many of the top 10 banks in the US offer financial advice services for customers.

Online Banking:

Today it’s difficult to find a bank that does not offer some kind of online banking service. Online banking is typically available through a website, or an app and most customers find that downloading the banking app to their phone provides them with the best way to track and manage their money on the go. With online banking, you can easily keep up with your balance, make sure that you have enough funds in the account to cover payments, and make automatic payments for your expenses and your savings.

Lending Services:

The majority of banks will also offer a range of credit products alongside their checking and saving account options. This can be useful if you need to take out a loan to pay for a large purchase or are considering getting a credit card that you can use to improve your credit rating over time. Applying to your own bank for a credit product can be an ideal option for many people since the bank will already have access to your financial records and this can sometimes make it easier to get approved if you have always paid bills on time and have had a stable income being paid into your checking account since opening it.

Mortgages:

If you want to buy a home, your bank might be the first place to consider when it comes to applying for a mortgage or home loan. Going with your own bank might make the process easier since they will already have your details from your checking account. If you have used a savings account from the same bank to save up for your down payment, applying for a mortgage with the same bank could also make transferring and paying these funds easier. In addition, just like other credit products, your bank has more access to your financial history and might be able to offer you a home loan with a better rate as a result.

Savings:

More and more banks are upping their services when it comes to helping their customers save. If you have online banking, it’s easier than ever to open a savings account with many banks in just a few clicks and set up automatic payments from your checking account. Some banks are even offering a range of handy features to help you save more without having to put a huge amount of effort in such as separate savings pots for you to keep your money in and the ability to round up the change whenever you spend and send that money to a separate savings account where it will build up.

Debt Help:

Finally, if you are currently dealing with a high level of debt, your bank might be able to help. If you are currently in debt to your bank with an overdraft, credit card or loan and are struggling to make the repayments, it is best to get in touch with the bank sooner rather than later since they will have strategies in place that they can use to make the situation easier for you before it has a huge impact on your financial history and credit score. Some banks will even offer debt advice and debt solutions for people who owe money to other creditors.

Whether you’re looking to open a new account for a specific purpose or want a checking account with a different bank, it’s always a good idea to find out more about the services that the bank offers and if they will be suitable for you.

Challenges and Best Practices of SFDC Test

0

Salesforce is a worldwide popular CRM with increasing popularity and has been used by companies for many years. Lead management, workflow automation, customer relationship management (CRM), sales management, and marketing automation are just a few of the many services it offers. To assist you better understand SFDC test problems and how to effectively exploit these advanced features for more robust testing efforts, we’ll also cover some of Salesforce’s advanced testing features in this piece.

Challenges faced in SFDC Test Automation:

1) Unit tests are not supported in the Salesforce language. Salesforce has good support for functional and integration testing, but it lacks unit test sets that may be used for entering test data or checking that code works as it is supposed to work. Due to the significant cost of doing so, unit tests may only be written in languages other than Salesforce’s proprietary one.

2) Streamline your workflow with Workflow Automation Visual Flow’s sophistication could make testing it a challenge. To design tests for these components, developers must be very familiar with the Salesforce language, which is a task that many people find challenging.

3) A debug Android package kit is not provided by Salesforce. For security concerns, users are reliant on the Play Store app, which cannot be tinkered with. Therefore, Salesforce’s mobile app is unable to recognize a large number of items.

4) Due to the fact that these lead sources rely on URLs that may vary over time, testing Web-to-Lead scenarios can be difficult. Salesforce must retrieve the right data from a web source, thus developers must either alter the URL field or conduct an update query on a regular basis.

Best Practices of SFDC Test Automation

1) List all test case scenarios and possible technical exceptions. Results and actions to be taken should be documented for each case. Test data should then be developed to validate each scenario, if necessary.

2) Separate classes and controllers for each function are commonly created by software engineers in order to make code portable, legible, and reusable. So, despite the fact that this improves the readability of the code, its efficiency isn’t greatly improved. When the test code is in the original class, portability may be achieved, and there are small possibilities of missing a test class during migration from sandbox to production throughout the migration process.

3) Developers should unit test their code before handing it on to the testers, as this is a good practice. Errors will be caught early on, as a result of this approach to development. As a result, testing/retesting time, as well as bug resolving costs, may be reduced. One more benefit of unit testing is that it helps to create code that is easy to debug and reusable, which is a big plus.

4) In this way, Salesforce innovations may be tested and aligned with the needs of users. An iterative approach to design is proposed by agile approaches. In Agile, the product is designed in small, incremental increments, rather than a single large build. Every sprint, testers work together to re-evaluate the project’s path and make adjustments as necessary after each sprint. As part of the sprint, the company can provide feedback so they can achieve the product they desire.

Conclusion: Salesforce is without a doubt the most well-known CRM product. In order for your organization to remain competitive, you’ll need to perform SFDC tests, maintain, and upgrade the system on a regular basis.

NC Governor Declares This Week As ‘Rural Broadband Week’ To Fight Digital Inclusion

0

NC Governor Roy Cooper has just declared this week (August 16–20) as “Rural Broadband Week” in order to fight digital inequities across our state.

The new proclamation addresses numerous digital inclusion needs and orders the NC Department of Information Technology to detail a plan to expand digital infrastructure, tools and skills in rural areas.

“High-speed internet is essential infrastructure for everyone, from students and teachers to small business owners, workers, doctors and farmers and we need to improve access for rural communities across our state,” said Governor Cooper. “In the wake of the devastating COVID-19 pandemic, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to empower every household in North Carolina to use fast internet service to link to new skills, global markets, education and healthcare.”

Along with this week’s proclamation, Governor Cooper also recently signed a $1.2 billion Closing the Digital Divide Plan that will attempt to give at least 95% of households across our state access to high-speed broadband of at least 100/20 Mbps and address issues of affordability and digital literacy in rural NC counties.

You can read Governor Cooper’s full proclamation here and follow Rural Broadband Week activities here on Facebook and Twitter.

Richard Johnson: An amazing career in numbers

0

Richard Johnson will rightly go down as one of the best National Hunt jockeys of all time. Horse racing enthusiasts were left stunned just a few months ago when Johnson announced his retirement from the sport with immediate effect.

The 44-year-old enjoyed a fabulous career, and it was never a surprise to see punters back him after reading up on the latest Betdaq horse racing tips ahead of a big meeting.

Johnson’s longevity was remarkable after nearly three decades in the saddle, and while his rivalry with AP McCoy was intense on the course, they were the best of the friends away from the track.

Tributes poured in from far and wide, lauding Johnson for his contributions to horse racing. And here, we have identified four numbers from Johnson’s incredible career.

3,800+ winners

Johnson conjured up many fabulous memories, and he made a lot of visits to the winners’ enclosure. Although it took him a couple of seasons to hit his stride, once Johnson was in full flow, he was a joy to watch.

From the 1996/97 season, Johnson regularly amassed over 100 wins a season, and in the 2015/16 campaign, he clocked up an astonishing 235 wins. Although his final season only produced a somewhat paltry (in comparison) 73 winners, Johnson was a terrific champion, and nothing fazed him.

Although he had quite a lot of lower grade wins, overall, Johnson was prolific as he ended his career with over 3,800 winners, with only McCoy managing more.

16 runner-up finishes in Jockey Championship

Although Johnson was a winning machine, and he churned out stellar performances season after season, he often found himself playing second fiddle to McCoy.

Indeed, in the prestigious Jump Jockeys Championship, McCoy had a vice-like grip on the title. The Ulsterman was crowned champion 20 times, and he was an unmovable force.

Despite Johnson’s best efforts, he was in McCoy’s shadow, and Johnson was the runner-up on 16 occasions. However, things swung in his favour when McCoy retired in 2015. Johnson was the new dominant force in the jump arena, and he won the title four seasons on the trot from 2016 to 2019.

McCoy also admitted after he retired how he learned so much from Johnson, and that was a testament to the type of jockey Johnson was.

2 Cheltenham Gold Cups

As we know by now, Johnson had a glittering career, and one that many jockeys dream of, but scarcely achieve. And Johnson certainly excelled at Cheltenham.

In 2000, Johnson lifted the Gold Cup on board Looks Like Trouble, in which he produced a winning time of 6 minutes 30.3 seconds, shaving 0.6 seconds off the previous best that had been set by the 100/1 longshot Norton’s Coin.

Johnson had to wait 18 years to lift the Gold Cup again. This time it was on board Native River, who was held in high regard for his strength and stamina, and he won by over four lengths.

20,000 rides

Johnson had over 20,000 rides during his extraordinary career, which tells a tale of his longevity. What is even more telling, is that in the last five years of his career, he scooped more than £4million in prize money, and had close to 600 wins.
