Charlotte Mecklenburg Library announced today, for the third consecutive year, it reached a record-breaking one million digital book checkouts in 2021. This milestone illustrates the continued growth and importance of library digital lending of e-books and audiobooks, especially after a prolonged period of building closures due to the global pandemic. Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is one of 121 public library systems worldwide that surpassed one million digital checkouts (complete list here).

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library has been providing readers 24/7 access to e-books and audiobooks for several years through the award-winning Libby app, the library reading app created by OverDrive. Reader interest and usage has grown every year, including a 15 percent increase in digital book borrowing when comparing 2021 to 2020.

According to the Urban Land Institute report, the higher prices are putting a strain on new households and young buyers who may not have enough to pay for down payments required for home financing.

According to the institute, the people of color stand to be affected the most by the lack of affordable housing, exacerbating the already wide racial ownership gap.

Charlotte’s Joedance Donates $60,000 to Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital

Joedance Film Festival has donated $60,000 for 2021 to Atrium Health Foundation, which represents the largest annual check in the Festival’s 12-year history. Joedance’s annual donation is earmarked for Atrium Health Levine Children’s. Last year, the organization donated $50,000 to Atrium.

The 13th Annual Joedance Film Festival will be held August 4-6, 2022, with a virtual format and in-person event. Film submissions for the 2022 Joedance Film Festival remain open until June 1, 2022.  Joedance Film Festival screens short films produced in one of the 50 United States or U.S. Territories. Joedance raises funds for pediatric cancer research and clinical trials at Atrium Health Levine Children’s.

Joedance, which includes the annual film festival during the first full weekend in August and related events year-round, honors the memory of Joe Restaino by raising funds and awareness for pediatric cancer research at Atrium Health Levine Children’s. The family chose a film festival to honor Joe Restaino because of his love of movies. Joedance supports research and clinical trials for pediatric sarcomas, blastomas and brain tumors.

The organization continues to ride a wave of expansion last year, this year expanding its film eligibility footprint from four Southeastern states (North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee) to nationwide, including U.S. territories. Joedance also continues to accept films in student category.

To date, Joedance has donated more than $300,000 to Atrium Health Levine Children’s in 12 years, including $60,000 in 2021 and $50,000 in 2020.

That $300,000 for Levine Children’s has done much, including:

*funding a Lab Technician to operate a very specialized piece of equipment, a CyToF machine, which will speed up the process of studying effects of inflammation on cancer cells as it relates treatment outcomes.

*assisting in funding clinical trials for recurrent osteosarcoma.

*funding multiple cancer research internships, which have provided critical support to the hospital, such as collecting data on integrative medicine, with Joedance Film Festival named as the underwriter for the project.
