Rock Hill and David Tepper Agree To $20 Million Settlement For Failed Panthers’ HQ

Rock Hill and David Tepper’s now abandoned Panthers Headquarters project have just agreed to settle out of court for $20 million, according to a new court filing.

If approved, the agreement will end the dueling lawsuits between the City of Rock Hill and Tepper’s GT Real Estate and immediately transfer $20 million cash from Tepper’s accounts to the city’s.

The settlement agreement does not specifically spell out who was at fault for the failed project or exactly why the project ultimately ended.

Colliers International is now attempting to sell the property as a ‘mixed-use development opportunity’.

The listing for ‘Rock Hill Overlook’ reads:

“Rock Hill Overlook is a premier ± 245 acre mixed-use development opportunity with immediate access to I-77 with a newly constructed Exit 81 interchange (May 2023). This first-class property offers exceptional ease to Rock Hill & the greater Charlotte markets. The property boasts remarkable access and visibility from I-77, with an astounding ± 5,679 SF of frontage.”

The $20 million settlement between GT Real Estate Holdings, LLC and the City of Rock Hill must now be approved by a Delaware bankruptcy judge, according to the official Tepper-Rock Hill Court Filing.

Charlotte’s Movement Mortgage Reveals Multi-Billion Dollar Deal To Buy Mortgage Network

Charlotte’s own Movement Mortgage (technically headquartered in Indian Land) has just announced a multi-billion dollar deal to fully acquire New England-based Mortgage Network Inc.

Movement will take over 30 East Coast Mortgage Network branches spanning 12 states, adding over $2 billion in annual mortgage volume, and 250 employees to their corporate roster.

“We want to grow, and we look for teams and individuals in alignment with Movement’s mission to love and value people. We found that and more in the Mortgage Network team,” Movement CEO Casey Crawford said in a press release. “I’m honored to welcome these talented and purpose-driven individuals to Movement. Together, we’ll make a meaningful difference in our industry and communities.”

The Mortgage Network acquisition will bring Movement Mortgages total branches to over 580 and total employee count to over 1,750 nationwide.

The specific terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed.

Takeaways from Panthers’ 2022-23 Wins

As the US’ shortest-lived professional sports season, NFL action doesn’t stop once it starts. In only 17 short weeks, all 32 teams go through many ups and downs. But for a franchise that’s grappling with rebuilding (or setting a foundation, some might argue), those 17 weeks can feel disproportionately like a rollercoaster.

Heading into this season, fans were looking at Matt Rhule to leverage his third year with the Panthers into a winning record. Even more were eyeing Baker Mayfield to spearhead a run to the playoffs. But, as of Week 10, Rhule has been sacked from his role as head coach. Mayfield’s future looks even bleaker after his blow-up after a win against the Falcons.

Throw in a season-ending injury for Donte Jackson and the Panthers’ outlook looks bleaker than ever. In terms of postseason predictions from analysts, many are eyeing the Bills and Chiefs to scrap it out in the AFC Championship before advancing to the Super Bowl. At the moment, Super Bowl odds favor the Bills to come out on top, then face the Philadelphia Eagles.

Meanwhile, the Panthers are scrapping to avoid last place in the NFC South. In fact, so far this season, the team has managed three wins against each of its division rivals—Buccs included. Though the team sits in third place in the division, its three wins against the Saints, Buccs, and Falcons highlight everything the Panthers can build on for a stronger future.  

Week 3: 22-14 Win Against Saints

This win was big for a few different reasons. First and foremost, it broke the Panthers’ dangerous nine-game losing streak, which started with their preseason opener. Second, it gave wide receiver Laviska Shenault a chance to stretch his legs—and show fans what they could count on from the former Jacksonville Jaguar. 

Best of all, Shenault’s big play came from a 67-yard pass from Mayfield. There are few things fans and analysts look for more than a sense of dynamism and connection between a receiver and a quarterback. It was a big moment in Mayfield’s maiden season with the Jaguars, and one that endeared the QB to his new fanbase.

But Shenault was ultimately the clear leader of the game. Shortly after the Saints scored their first touchdown, Shenault came through to offer the Jaguars a cushion with only 12 minutes left on the clock. The Panthers’ defense also stepped up to the challenge. Though the Saints scored another touchdown, the Panthers’ defense handled Jameis Winston well enough.

Week 7: 21-3 Win Against Buccs

Few things feel as good as stomping on one of the league’s powerhouse teams—especially with a final score of 21-3. Though the Buccaneers were showing clear signs of weakness by Week 7, that doesn’t make the Panthers’ win against Tom Brady’s Buccs any less riveting. It marked Brady’s first plunge past the .500 record in two decades of NFL play. 

In fact, in a post-game interview, defensive end Brian Burns specifically called out the experience of beating Brady. He said, “It feels great to hold the GOAT to three points.” Still, while most of the attention in this faceoff was on Brady’s breakdown and the long-term security of the Buccs this season, Panthers fans were focused elsewhere.

The game came shortly after Rhules’ sacking, and management’s decision to trade Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers. It looked to many that the Panthers’ front office was phoning the season in. But the win against the Buccs highlighted that the team wouldn’t be looking to 2023-24 for a brighter future. 

And considering quarterbacks Mayfield and Sam Darnold were both on the bench, it meant a lot to see the Panthers string together a dominant win with third-stringer PJ Walker. Best of all, it put the team in a fighting position for the NFC South.

 

Week 10: 25-15 Win Against the Falcons

From Shenault’s strong opening season with the Panthers to D’Onta Foreman’s relentless efforts during the team’s Falcons game, this year’s roster has been full of surprises. Foreman pushed for 31 carries for 130 years and a touchdown. 31 carries is the most a running back has ever recorded, making Foreman a franchise record-holder.

Shenault sprinted 41 yards to secure the Panthers’ lead, contributing to the Panthers’ season-high record of 232 running yards. It reminded fans that McCaffrey’s departure wouldn’t leave the team high and dry—not so long as Shenault and Foreman are on the field. It was also a critical win for interim coach Wilks, who had just weathered a brutal 41-21 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

It was also a big day for the team’s defense. Marquis Haynes provided a critical sack late in the game as the Falcons pushed to close the distance. Haynes sacked quarterback Marcus Mariota twice, throwing a wrench into things with only two and a half minutes left in the game. Following the game, the Panthers claimed the NFL’s fourth-best rushing attack record.

Looking Ahead

What does the future hold for the Panthers—and is there anything to look forward to this season? Currently, the team has a long list of demands. First and foremost, they need to find a franchise quarterback that will offer consistency, or figure out how to manage Mayfield. The focus will be on the offense. 

Second, the team also needs to sign on a quality coach that has a vision for the team. So far, Wilks has curried favor with fans, but it’s uncertain whether he’ll stay for the long term. Unfortunately for the Panthers, not many understand owner David Tepper’s plans for the future. That means there’s little security in the idea of Wilks signing a multi-year contract.

However, his decision to trade McCaffrey may have a few critical benefits. It will provide them with key selections at the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft. So far, they have a few options. They can trade down from the No. 3 selection overall, acquiring early picks in 2023 and 2024. Others think the Panthers might target defensive tackle Jalen Carter or else quarterback Anthony Richardson.

Barring a hot surge in the coming months, the Charlotte Hornets look like they’ll be one of the top sellers at the 2023 trade deadline.

Wednesday’s loss to the Indiana Pacers dropped Charlotte to 4-12 on the season. Since winning two of their first three games to start the year, the Hornets have dropped 11 of 13 games.

It’s only a month into the regular season, yes. But it’s going to be very difficult to make up all of that ground lost in the Eastern Conference. Teams in the east who have underachieved up to this point, such as the Brooklyn Nets, Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers, are bound to get better as the season progresses.

North Carolina sports betting is legal in two tribal casinos in the state, but there is hope that mobile/online sports gambling will launch here at some point in 2023. If this happens, sportsbooks such as DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars and FanDuel will likely offer risk-free bets to new customers upon signing up.

With the Hornets near the bottom of the standings, GM Mitch Kupchak may soon wish to let other teams know that he’s open for business.. According to Sean Deveney of Heavy.com, several NBA executives “are eyeing” a trio of players in Charlotte.

Those players are Gordon Hayward, Terry Rozier and Mason Plumlee. Deveney added that the Heat, Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, Phoenix Suns and New York Knicks “are expected to inquire should those players be put on the market.”

An Eastern Conference general manager told Deveney that Hayward “is a gamble” because of his shoulder injury. But the GM added that clubs” probably need to take a gamble” to win. Per Deveney, some in the league even think Charlotte would listen to offers on 2019 first-round pick P.J. Washington.

Charlotte acquired Plumlee in a trade with the Detroit Pistons in the 20221 offseason. 

In 2020 free agency, Hayward signed a lucrative four-year contract worth $120 million with the Hornets. Rozier was acquired in a sign-and-trade pact that sent All-Star guard Kemba Walker to the Boston Celtics three years ago.

In 101 games with the Hornets, Hayward has averaged 17.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. Rozier has come into his own as a starter in Charlotte, averaging close to 20 points per contest, and Plumlee is always a threat to put up double-digit points and rebounds per game.

So if the Hornets do decide to sell, there should be plenty of interest in all three veterans. But if the Hornets can go on a run and get themselves back into the play-in race, Kupchak could of course decide to be a buyer instead.

Steve Clifford Provides Injury Update On LaMelo Ball

Late in Wednesday’s loss to the Pacers, the Hornets lost standout guard LaMelo Ball, who reinjured his left ankle.

The ankle injury kept Ball out for the team’s first 13 games. He debuted on Nov. 12 against the Miami Heat, putting up 15 points in a 132-115 loss. Unfortunately, Ball’s best game of the young season ended when he accidentally stepped on the foot of a fan at courtside.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Hornets head coach Steve Clifford stated that X-rays on Ball’s ankle were negative. However, he was already ruled out for the team’s Nov. 18 game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

“We’ll be without him here,” Clifford said, per Rod Boone of The Charlotte Observer. “I don’t think we have any idea how long.”

Ball, the No. 3 pick of the 2020 draft, has grown into one of the NBA’s top young guards. In his rookie year, Ball averaged 15.7 points, 5.9 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game. Last year, he averaged 20.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and a whopping 7.6 assists per game.

In three game appearances this season, Ball has averaged 19.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game. Obviously, the Hornets offense just can’t function the same without Ball, so the Hornets can only hope that the injury doesn’t keep him out long-term.

If Ball and Hayward return to the court in the not-so-distant future, it could provide the jolt this offense needs. In the meantime, Charlotte will need a lot more out of its other key veterans in Rozier, Plumlee, Washington, Dennis Smith Jr. and Kelly Oubre Jr.

UNC Charlotte, the city of Charlotte and Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK) have been named the recipient of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Cleantech award by the Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster (RTCC).

The organizations were selected for the award based on their collaborative initiative PoleVolt™, which uses existing streetlights to provide curbside electric vehicle (EV) charging.The solution is the first of its kind in the nation.

A public-private effort between EPIC at UNC Charlotte, the city of Charlotte, Centralina Regional Council and Duke Energy, PoleVolt™ is funded through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technology Office.

“The option to choose clean energy transportation should be available to everyone, so we’re proud to play a role in efforts like PoleVolt™ that help remove barriers to access,” said Stephen De May, Duke Energy’s North Carolina president. “When you pair UNC Charlotte’s talented research team with the type of innovation we’re constantly developing at our Mount Holly Emerging Technology Center, we can all help make clean energy and an equitable economy a reality.”

Decreasing costs, increasing access
Placing charging stations in the public right-of-way along the curb can be expensive and difficult because of the potential need to run underground wiring and install new charging bollards in or near sidewalks. By utilizing existing streetlight infrastructure and connecting the circuits on overhead wiring, PoleVolt™ can lower the costs of installing EV charging stations by as much as 50%.

Future PoleVolt™ locations are planned in Charlotte and across the state.

Greener driving for all
The first deployment of PoleVolt™ was in February at the Ritz at Washington Heights Park in Charlotte’s Historic West End District – an initiative designed by community leaders in 2018 to improve air quality, reduce carbon emissions and improve health.

Two UNC Charlotte undergraduate engineering students — Grady Harwood and Philip Harmon — led the development of the project’s cloud-based software to launch charging from a smartphone. The students, along with Rob Cox, associate director of EPIC, gave a demonstration of the PoleVolt™ to the governor and Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles at the February deployment event.

“I am grateful we are being recognized for our work to promote both sustainability and equity in new technology,” said Mayor Lyles. “We are committed to investing in our Corridors of Opportunity with clean energy and technological advances that will benefit residents now and into the future.”

Mecklenburg County is part of the nine-county Centralina region. Centralina is home to the Department of Energy’s Clean Cities program for the region – the Centralina Clean Fuels Coalition. The coalition has been working for decades to increase the region’s use of alternative fuels, improve air quality and reduce impacts of climate change.

“The Centralina region will be a model for EV planning and deployment because of these types of innovative partnerships,” said Centralina Executive Director Geraldine Gardner.

PoleVolt™ supports Executive Order No. 246 that seeks to accelerate the state’s transition to a clean energy economy by creating a carbon-neutral, sustainable state transportation system in North Carolina.

Duke Energy to Aid Energy Emergency at Camp Lejeune with New Microgrid

Duke Energy has been awarded a $22 million utility energy service contract (UESC) by Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Lejeune for the design and construction of a microgrid at the military base.

The innovative microgrid solution includes upgraded electrical infrastructure, 5 megawatts (MW) of on-site natural gas-fired generation, a 5.4-MW battery energy storage system, integration of an existing solar photovoltaic system, and a microgrid controller to provide integrated demand management, black start and islanding capability.

“We’re excited to bring additional energy reliability and resiliency to Camp Lejeune,” said Melisa Johns, vice president, Distributed Energy Solutions at Duke Energy. “This project offers a number of innovative and integrated solutions that will lead to more efficient energy use and significant cost savings to Camp Lejeune.”

The award leverages Energy Resilience Conservation Investment Program (ERCIP) funding to install the microgrid at Camp Johnson – an education and training area located within Camp Lejeune.

“The Marine Corps is investing in state-of-the-art infrastructure to position installations to prevent, recover and survive a prolonged loss of electrical service from weather – and climate-related events,” explained Marine Corps Installations Command Public Works Director Walter Ludwig. “This UESC award is a major step toward furthering the reliability, resilience and efficiency of Camp Lejeune’s electrical infrastructure and on-site generation capabilities.”

While many installations have backup generators, microgrids provide a more sophisticated generation source. Microgrids enable operators to manage the power load and everything plugged into the gr id, while redirecting power to critical missions that require an uninterruptible energy supply during an unplanned power outage.

Located in Onslow County, N.C., Camp Lejeune is home to the largest concentration of Marines in the Marine Corps. It makes up nearly 20% of the Marine Corps’ installation energy consumption. In addition to multiple other energy efficiency projects, Duke Energy also completed a 13-MW solar facility at Camp Lejeune in 2015. This project will further reduce energy demand and consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs at the installation by upgrading solar photovoltaic system inverters and installing lighting upgrades.
