Low-Cost Hybrid Airline Just Announced New Direct Flights Out of Charlotte

A new hybrid low-cost airline has just added a new non-stop route out of Charlotte.

The Minneapolis-based Sun Country Airlines will be flying direct from Charlotte to Minneapolis twice per week on Mondays and Fridays starting on April 13th.

The new direct flight is the result of Sun Country’s charter partnership with Charlotte FC, so if you book a flight, you might get the chance to sit next to one of your favorite players.

NC Closes Out $3.6 Billion in Coronavirus Relief Funds

Today the North Carolina Pandemic Recovery Office (NCPRO) announced the closeout of $3.6 billion in Coronavirus Relief Funds, symbolizing major progress in the economic recovery process and the disbursement of federal aid. NCPRO and over 1,700 state agencies, local governments, hospitals, schools, businesses, and nonprofits have worked together to distribute these funds since the early days of the pandemic.

“Coronavirus Relief Funds were among the first to get into the hands of local leaders, at a time when we were just beginning to realize the magnitude of COVID-19’s impact on our economy, schools, government services, and healthcare system,” said Stephanie McGarrah, NCPRO Executive Director. “Closing this chapter is a major achievement for NCPRO’s staff and everyone who worked with us during one of the most difficult periods in our state’s history.”

Congress provided $150 billion in Coronavirus Relief Funds to states, local governments, and U.S. Territories under the 2020 CARES Act. North Carolina received $3.6 billion which the General Assembly appropriated to address the state’s most urgent needs.

Funding amounts included:

  • $1.35 Billion – State and Local Governments
  • $826 Million – Health
  • $664 Million – Public Services
  • $478 Million – Education
  • $208 Million – Business Relief and Recovery
  • $36 Million – Individual Relief
  • $21 Million – Infrastructure

Closing out these funds is the final step in a years-long process of distributing and tracking each dollar and providing technical guidance to recipients, all while navigating evolving federal guidance. NCPRO has now submitted its final reports to the U.S. Department of Treasury, and the North Carolina General Assembly.

North Carolina has the best street style in southern United States, according to a new study by menswear brand boohooMAN that ranks all United States and the District of Columbia against four contributing factors.

The Street Style Index report analyzed the fashion influence, online search data from the last 12 months, social media engagement per state to determine the state with the best street style. It ranks 51 US jurisdictions based on four main pillars: number of fans per look on popular online fashion community Lookbook.nu (over 180,000 looks were analyzed); streetwear video views on TikTok; streetwear search interest via Google Trends; and style influence according to the number of Google searches for streetwear in each state it(i.e. ‘New York streetwear’, ‘New York street style’) via Ahrefs.

North Carolina has the best street style in the south, after placing fifth best overall in the United States. It scored highly amongst voters, having the seventh highest number of votes with 15.71 fans per look amongst 1,502 posts. North Carolina streetwear also received the tenth highest number of TikTok views. However, it didn’t grab a top ten spot amongst online search levels, ranking 27th for interest levels in streetwear on Google Trends and 13th most Googled street style in America with 410 monthly average searches.

New York continues to hold on to its title of fashion capital of the United States, with the highest number of fans per look on Lookbook, with 28.93 fans per look based on 52,396 posts. It also has the highest levels of search interest in streetwear on Ahrefs. New York ranked second highest interest levels via Google Trends and the seventh highest number of views on Tiktok for search terms such as ‘New York streetwear’. New York has the most Googled street style in the nation, receiving 22,150 monthly average searches, almost 10 times the search volume seen compared to any other state.

Google Trends data was used to capture the streetwear trends emerging from New York:

New York has the highest interest level in cargo pants, a key streetwear 2022 trend, out of any other state, with California second. In September, searches for ‘cargo pants’ rose by 257% to an all-time high in New York.

Google Trends data reveals searches for ‘cargo pants’ are also at an all-time high in the United States, with an estimated 306,000 average monthly searches nationally.

Cargo pants have been such a breakout trend that searches have exploded in October 2022 by 294% to an all-time high in the United States.

Another streetwear staple, the bomber jacket, is searched an estimated 156,000 times in the United States, with New York leading the trend this winter.

Tracksuits trended at an all-time high last winter, with searches exploding in the United States by 536% in October 2021, and are expected to make another big comeback this year. New York leads the way again, of course, with the highest interest level according to Google Trends.

California ranks just behind New York with the second best street style. Californians have the third highest Google Trends search interest levels for streetwear-related terms. California also has the second most influential street style, ranking second most Googled in the United States with 2,230 average monthly searches. However, the Sunshine State missed out on the top spot as it was voted tenth best street style online with 13.38 fans per look between 36,346 posts.

Hawaii takes the third spot behind California and New York by ranking high among states for online search interest in streetwear via Google Trends and Ahrefs, receiving 2,150 average monthly searches. It was voted ninth best street style online ahead of California with 14.4 fans per look based on 2,578 posts. Hawaii also ranked 20th for total views on TikTok for ‘Hawaii streetwear’.

Graphic t-shirts saw a massive increase in searches this fall, soaring by 541% nationally. Hawaii was one of the top states searching for this trend online.

New Jersey ranks fourth on the Street Style Index. It was voted fourth best style online with 19.58 fans per look, behind Arkansas. New Jersey scored in the top five for highest online search interest in streetwear via Google Trends. New Jersey ranks in the top ten for most searched street style in the United States, at ninth place with 950 monthly average searches. The Garden State missed out on third place to Hawaii, as it ranked 32nd according to the number of streetwear video views on TikTok.

Texas appears in sixth place for best street style in the US, ranking highly amongst online voters with 15.82 fans per look amongst 8,715 posts. Ahrefs Google search data reveals Texas has the eighth most searched street style in America with 900 monthly average searches. It missed out on the spot for best street style in the south to North Carolina, as Texas ranked middle of the pack for Google Trends interest levels and number of TikTok streetwear video views.

Washington D.C. ranks seventh best street style in the U.S. This is mostly due to Google Trends data revealing that the District of Columbia has the highest level of search interest in streetwear in the nation, beating any other state. It unfortunately didn’t grab a top ten spot for any other criteria as it has the 14th most Googled street style with 350 average monthly searches; was voted 17th best style online with 7.22 fans per look amongst 3,834 posts; and placed 29th for TikTok streetwear video views.

Washington places eighth in the Street Style Index, earning the title for best street style in the northwest. It ranks fifth best style amongst online voters, receiving 18.08 fans per look amongst 5,325 posts. Despite this, Washington lost a top five spot due to receiving an average score for other criteria. Google data reveals the Evergreen State has the 18th highest interest in streetwear, and Washington’s style is the 22nd most Googled in the nation, receiving 350 average monthly searches. Similarly, Washington streetwear received the 19th highest number of video views on TikTok.

Florida is number nine amongst the states with the best street style. It earns its ranking due to having the fifth most Googled style, behind New York, California, Hawaii and Maryland with 1,130 average monthly searches. Florida has the 13th highest number of video views on TikTok for streetwear. The Sunshine State didn’t bag a top five spot as it received an average score for streetwear search interest on Google Trends and online votes, with 5.5 fans per look amongst 11,409 posts.

Rounding off the list at number ten is Oregon. Oregon received the second highest number of votes for its style, just behind New York and beating California for this criteria, with 26.85 fans per look amongst 1,833 posts. It missed out on being crowned best street style in the northwest to Washington State, with a below average number of TikTok video views, placing 17th for streetwear search interest on Google Trends, and having the 19th most Googled street style in America with 200 average monthly searches.

Duke Energy Partnering w/ North American Utilities To Stop Increasing Scam Calls

It could be a phone call or a text. “This is Duke Energy, and we are on our way to disconnect your service unless you pay us right now.” The type of communication or message may vary, but the intent is always the same – to scam customers out of their money or personal information.

If you receive a similar call or text, do not engage because Duke Energy never calls or text customers demanding immediate payment to avoid disconnections. Customers can verify their balance on Duke Energy’s website, via our mobile app or by calling the customer service line.

As technology has advanced to help customers pay their bills, so have scam tactics geared toward preying on them and defrauding them of their money and personal information. That’s why Duke Energy partners with utilities across North America to bring awareness on fraudulent activities during the seventh annual Utility Scam Awareness Day on Nov. 16.

The campaign focuses on utility impostor scam calls and the advanced tactics used to target customers. The day is also part of the weeklong International Scam Awareness Week, an advocacy and awareness campaign directed at educating customers and exposing the tactics used by scammers.

Recognized annually, Utility Scam Awareness Day was created by Utilities United Against Scams (UUAS), a consortium of more than 150 electric, water and natural gas companies and their respective trade associations.

“Scammer tactics are becoming increasingly sophisticated, but utility impostor scams are oftentimes as simple as a scammer posing as a customer’s local utility, calling and threatening to shut off their service unless they provide payment,” said Monica Martinez, executive director of UUAS. “Customers shouldn’t be afraid to end a call that they suspect is a scam. You can always end the call and dial the number on your utility’s bill or on the utility website to confirm.”

Stop the scam

Over the last few years, particularly during the pandemic, Duke Energy and other UUAS member organizations have seen an increase in efforts to take advantage of utility customers and the financial challenges that many have faced.

So far in 2022, more than 150,000 scam attempts have been reported. This figure is a significant increase over 2021, which saw almost 17,000 reported scam attempts. Contributing to this rise is a combination of a rise in increased scam activity, increased reporting by scam-wary customers, and improved monitoring.  Fortunately, less than 1% of individuals who reported a scam attempt fell for it – a tremendous decrease from the 9% victimization rate from when the company first started tracking data in 2015.

“While we are proud of the progress we’ve made, our goal is to reduce the number of our customers falling victim to these scams even further,” said Tiffany Dennison, Duke Energy’s vice president of revenue services and metering. “As scammers become more sophisticated, we’ve become more committed to curbing the problem through educating our customers, engaging with the telecom and technology industries to remove access to phone lines and fraudulent online advertising, and advocating for stronger policies to protect customers.”

Know what to look for

  • Threat to disconnect: Scammers often threaten immediate service disconnections. They ask for personal information or demand payment to prevent service interruptions.
  • Request for immediate payment: Scammers may instruct customers to make payments via prepaid cards, digital payment apps, cryptocurrencies or direct transactions with banking institutions. Duke Energy does not accept payments through the Cash App, Venmo or Zelle apps. (Customers can make payments directly via Duke Energy’s website, duke-energy.com, or mobile app.)
  • Promise of a refund or discount: Scammers prey on households with tight budgets. They will inform customers of impending refunds due to overpaid utility bills; however, they need banking information to process the refund. They also may claim that immediate bill payment will result in a discount or that a charitable donation can be made in exchange for a lesser bill payment.
  • Personal information: Scammers promise to mail refund checks for overpayments on a customer’s account if they can confirm their personal data, including birthdays and, in some cases, Social Security numbers.

Protect yourself

Duke Energy will always offer a variety of ways to pay a bill, including online payments, phone payments, automatic bank drafts, mail or in person. Duke Energy will never:

  • Specify how customers should make a bill payment.
  • Threaten immediate service interruption. Customers with past-due accounts receive multiple advanced notices, typically by mail and in their regular monthly bill.
  • Ask for personal information or credit or debit card numbers over the phone, by email or in person – either for a payment or a refund.

If customers suspect someone is trying to scam them, they should hang up, shut the door or delete the email or text. They also should contact the utility immediately at the number on the most recent monthly bill or on the utility’s official website, not the phone number the scammer provides. If customers ever feel in physical danger, they should call 911.

Panthers Legend Thomas Davis Opening New Sports Bar in Uptown Charlotte

Record breaking and beloved former Panther DE Thomas Davis Sr. has just announced his official grand opening dat for Ten58 Sports Bar and Lounge in Uptown Charlotte.

His initial plan was to open what he says will be “one of the hottest spots in Charlotte” during the first week of the season, but he ran into delays due to worker shortages.

The new grand opening is now set for this coming Thursday at 430 W. Fourth St. (the site of the old Taproom Social).

In an Instagram post, Davis Sr. wrote:

Ten58 Sports Bar and Lounge announce our grand opening, Thursday, November 17, 2022.

Doors will open to the public to drop in from 6pm-11pm.

Dr. Brittany Danielle Hunt, a member of the Lumbee Tribe who is owner of Indigenous Ed, LLC and the co-host of the Red Justice Project, will lead a session titled Moving beyond Myth Tuesday November 15, from 12 to 1 p.m., in the Fellowship Hall of Covenant Presbyterian Church at 1000 East Morehead Street.

During this interactive workshop, participants will reflect on their experiences learning about Indigenous people in school, and how these lessons were often rooted in untruths that have crystallized over time.

MeckMIN Executive Director LeDayne McLeese Polaski remarks, “Many of our Indigenous neighbors, those who have lived on these lands the longest, when asked what their non-native neighbors understand of them, use words like “stereotypes,” “untruths,” “misinformation,” “fiction” and “ignorance.” In response, this November, MeckMIN is offering opportunities in which some of our Indigenous neighbors will tell their own stories on their own terms.”

Dr. Hunt will work to deconstruct stereotypes and to recognize the authenticity and complexity of actual Indigenous identity, both contemporarily and historically.
